Day 3 look at @ynotfestival 🧡✨ I definitely saved the best 'til last — and thankfully by this point my spray tan had worn off just enough that the orange wasn’t too OTT 😅 When I saw Madness were playing, I obviously decided I needed some baggy trousers… so I made them! These are the @truebias Emerson pants, lengthened to wear long. I briefly wished I’d gone wider in the leg, but actually they’re so wearable day-to-day as they are, so I got over that quickly. The fabric is a deadstock viscose with a little stretch — just enough weight to drape beautifully without being clingy. The top has had a bit of a journey — it started life as a McCalls M5094 @simplicitymccallsuk dress that never quite fit, but last year I turned it into a co-ord with an added shirred back panel. The fabric came from my mother-in-law’s attic when I first got into sewing more years ago than I care to admit! 🧵💗 And yes, the sequin cami was back again — because why not? Then, when the sun went down and even orange and sequins weren’t enough to stand out, I lit up the fairy wings one last time 🧚‍♀️✨ Also — shoutout to the old-school orange VW van that ended up matching my outfit perfectly in one of the photos. No idea who our camping neighbours were, but the coordination was spot on 😂🧡🚐 Peak happiness, in every sense of the word. MMM24 day 19 - another sunny Sunday sleeper dress It's a twofer today as we made a quick run down to the beach this morning for a swim before it got crowded. Swipe to see the legs that I very rarely get out in the British Isles, in a pair of True Bias Emerson pants shorts in chambray that are sadly not really fit for purpose any longer. My much expanded behind strains the waistband seams when putting them on, and some of the pleat stitching has popped 😬. I wore it with a refashioned second hand t-shirt that I based on the Hemlock tee from Grainline Studio. The dress I spent most of the day in is a shirred bodice sleeper dress inspired by the By Hand London tutorial from two years ago. It's made from a fantastic teal and black leopard print cotton viscose blend, and was constructed from three rectangle remnants I bought in a sale. I love it because it's comfy, feels quite stylish, is a blend of my best colours, and feels right for so many occasions, the least of which is sitting in my garden, in the sun, trying and failing to do a really hard sudoku. 🤔 Really hoping these sunny Sundays continue as they make life so much more pleasant. I used some scrap cotton voile for the pockets because I couldn't deal with pattern matching 😅 It's my coord entry to the #st4s25 challenge hosted by @sewing_in_spain and @jenleggsews I made a size 10 in the Aster and added 3cm to the length and a size 14 in the Emerson high rise shorts, View D. I didn't do the double fold on the shorts hem so gained 1/4" in length. This coord will be perfect for my summer holidays in... the UK! 😂

From useless dress to useful shorts These were no hassle at all because I've made and fitted the pattern before. The only change from my last pair was to double up the waist elastic because I always feel like my shorts are going to fall down if I have my phone in the pocket. Worked a treat. The colour is really patchy because of my failed dye job on the dress I harvested the fabric from, so my next job is to decide how to re-dye them. Emerson trousers finished! Totally love this long leg look - and I've loved wearing them. Made in a Viscose Linen mix from Minerva, that despite pre-wash did shed fluff when ironing (a lot!). That said, it has not creased too badly (photos taken after several wears, including a 3 he flight) so good from that perspective and they have pressed well when making. I could spend hours looking and analysing the fit of these, based on just these photos, but I've worn them plenty and been happy with how they felt so maybe I'll overlook those drag lines I can see... Adjustments included 1cm added to the rise front/back, then 3cm added just to front rise. 2in total added to side seams and legs lengthened by 11inches (a 2 1/4 in hem). Swipe to reveal! Here's how I over-dyed the shorts I made from my old dress. This is a lot more methodical than my usual resist dyes on fabric. I drew a grid on each leg of the shorts using wash out marker, then stitched in rows along the grid points to create uniform folds. It was a little tricky around the thick parts but didn't take as long as I feared. Obviously this technique would be much easier on fabric lengths. I always find it quite unpredictable how a particular fabric will take-up dye. This was a lot more reactive than I was expecting. I took it out the pot after 2 hours and rinsed a section to see how it was doing. To my surprise it ran clear so I took it out. I used 4g Procion MX black, which I thought was quite a scant amount for the weight of fabric, but it was probably too much. What do you think of the results? Would you consider this technique to revive a faded or stained garment? Personally I like the controlled chaos element, and the fact that the shorts are so unique! MMM day #2!! There’s been a change of plan to today’s outfit! I pulled out my Fibremood billie trousers ( swipe to see ) but I’m just not feeling it- I did some alterations to the waistband last week because it was gaping. The pants that almost weren’t! (Also, concert black make #2 for the season 🖤) The Pattern: @truebias #emersonpants (lengthened 9” at the hem to take it from a cropped pant to a full-length trouser) The Fabric: @meetmilk_fabric Smooth Drape Tencel Twill in black from @minervadotcom fabric shop. Also used some Dritz soft waistbanding instead of the original waistband pieces again! Thoughts: I sewed these up…then they sat around for a week because I just did NOT feel like hemming them. I usually love hand hemming pants, and maybe it was because I was a little meh on the silhouette (kind of wish the legs were wider) or because I didn’t do a great job of drafting the longer leg. However I was letting out a pair of Athleta pants today and wondered why you can’t use the #10 edgestitching foot instead of the #5 blind stitching foot to do a blind hem. (They look very similar, and I never got around to getting the #5 foot.) Turns out you can, though it’s maybe not as easy! So I let out and blind hemmed those with my edgestitching foot and then turned around and hemmed these pants. Emerson shorts done! I lengthened them, added a turned up hem and as mentioned in my previous post, improvised the pockets with some home made bias binding from Liberty scraps and cotton lining fabric. Pleased with the finish on the final result. As has happened before, a shortage of fabric bought as a remnant forces creativity and inspires me to modify a pattern to make it my own. I’m not 100% on the fit of these. As a wearable toile they are good enough and it’s been a useful step toward making a pair of trousers. Fabrics from @guthrieghani. Current project: #trueBiasEmerson shorts using fabric harvested from failed dress. What went wrong with the dress? First of all I hated the sleeves, too clingy and a weird length. I changed the sleeves, adding cuffs and it was better but I still hated wearing the dress because it felt 'heavy'. Then I got a dye stain right on the front. I dyed it a lovely colour to try and hide the stain but it didn't work and the dye turned out patchy. I put it aside for a couple of years to decide what to do with it. Although a failure, the project was a useful learning insight: I really don't like long sleeved dresses or dresses in weighty fabrics. The fabric (linen viscose) is actually a perfect weight for shorts and there was just enough to cut these, making use of the original hem. The stained part is on the inside of the pocket bag, so that problem is solved. I'm going to over-dye them black using a resist technique to hide the patchy colour (making it deliberately patchy) 🖤 #emersonShorts #refashioned #refashioning
