Made out of a 1970’s JC Penney’s twin bedsheet and straight out of my dreams 😍 I accidentally took about 2” off the side seams so it’s *quite* snug but I’m gonna make it work. Now I just need to hunt down the perfect vintage boots to go with it! Ready for an essay on this dress I made for my family photos? Ok let’s go. I bought the Lora dress as soon as it was released years ago but never made it. Even though it was said to bra/bra strap friendly it looked like it was going to sit too wide and therefore be a bit fussy so I knew I’d have to muslin it and that made me procrastinate even though I was smitten with the style and silhouette. Fast forward to now and I finally muslined and made it and guess what? It actually fit pretty great with few modifications. I used a thicker, more structured, heavily embroidered fabric with a scalloped edge so I did remove quite a bit of ease that would be good in a drapey fabric but doesn’t work in something like this. I also shortened it because I omitted the hem and it left it raw to incorporate the scalloped, embroidered edge. I do find the sleeve sits a bit wide and they do show bra straps sometimes but it’s not a dress I’m wearing all the time and chasing kids in so I don’t mind. I used the sleeve pattern piece but just cut it off a lot shorter, and used that embroidered edge again and did 4 rows of shirring. I did shorten the elastic in the sleeve by toooons. Like I used half as much probably. For the button loops I tried to use the embroidered fabric, but it was just way too thick and couldn’t be turned right side out so I ended up using just some plain white fabric for those instead. The result: stunning. I’m so pleased with it. The fabric is 100% cotton including the embroidery which is hard to find. It’s a gingham base and the thick embroidery makes the fabric crinkle up a bit almost like a seersucker even though it’s not one. The embroidery is directional and is in stripes so I did lots of pattern matching and it was totally worth it. With the scalloped edge on the sleeve and hem and all those pearl buttons and button loops - I feel like I made an heirloom piece to pass onto my kids. That wasn’t my intention when I started out on this project but I’m not mad about it! Pattern: @truebias #loradress #truebiaslora Fabric: embroidered cotton gingham from @landofoh on Etsy. It came from South Korea but didn’t take too terribly long to get here.

Excited to finally get round to sharing some pictures of my @truebias #loradress I loved making this, it’s the most fitted thing I’ve ever made and I think it’s come out pretty good! I was really unsure about whether the top was going to fit without lots of adjustments but I’m amazed that it just worked first time! (This never happens to me!) The only adjustments I made was to take it in at the hips, as it was a bit too ‘hippy’ for me! The length and the sleeve lengths were a bit of a surprise as I didn’t have quite enough fabric for the longer lengths so just cut it them to what I had, but I think it’s the perfect length on me! The button loops were a bit of a challenge as I’d never done them before, some are a bit tight, some ok, but at least I could get them all undone at the end of the night! 😂 The fabric was so lovely to work with, it’s a cotton from @rainbowfabrickilburn, at the #knittingandstitchingshow in Harrogate in November, it felt really bright when I was buying it at the time, but absolutely perfect for summer! Braving the heat with this Ankara dress today. This pattern was a cool skill builder for me! I made it a few months ago not really knowing what to expect since it looked complex (lots of different parts, this was also I think my first project with a lined project) but the instructions and video tutorials were thorough and very easy to follow. These are the only buttons I've ever successfully installed so hooray for that! Mods: Almost none! Just shortened the straps by 3" and added a dart in the armscye to pinch out some gapping. My sewing secret is that I play (relatively) fast and loose with fit. I rarely make a muslin and rarely make fit adjustments. Part of this is that I’m lucky to have measurements proportional to what patterns are drafted for, but part of this is that I know my body isn’t static. If I perfectly fit something to my body first thing in the morning, it’s not going to fit after lunch. When I made this dress back in April, I wasn’t happy with the fit. If you’re interested you can scroll back in my feed and see how the buttons were pulling across the front. I contemplated letting out the side seams, didn’t feel like it, tried it on again the other day and it fit perfectly! Bodies change, and I wish I had a magic wand that made all my clothes perfectly fit every time 🪄 anyway I felt super cute in this dress the other day! Thrilled to share my first #loradress from @truebias , which has officially become my favorite pattern. The elegant curved lines create a simple yet exquisitely flattering silhouette, and no doubt this will become a staple in my summer wardrobe. I made a couple adjustments, including shortening the spaghetti straps and opting for just 10 buttons. Although I haven’t done much sewing this year, I’ve really enjoyed slowing things down and making pieces that feel more like me. I've been too lazy to photograph some of my recent makes, so I have a queue of things to post. This is my most recent make from this weekend. I wore it to work today because it's a million degrees out. I really love how the dress worked out, especially because I just went right for it without a toile. Lora Dress! 🌼🌸🌺🩵🪩🪡🧵✂️ July-August 2024 I made this Lora Dress by @truebias to attend a friend's wedding in August, and I actually finished it on time!! I started by grading between three sizes at the waist and hip and doing several rounds of muslins to get the fit right. I'm so glad I did! The fabric is a stretch cotton sateen, so I had a little bit of wiggle room (literally), but I didn't necessarily need it. The original pattern didn't include a skirt lining, but it was easy to add. I also picked a hem length somewhere between View A and View B, which I really liked. Overall, I'm SO happy with how it turned out, and I hope I can find another time to wear it! As I sit here thinking about all the things I could make in 2025, it's probably time to post my #MakeNine2024 recap. I made 5 of the 9 as planned, and a 6th with the original planned fabric but a swapped out skirt pattern. The #SunriseSkort , @jessilous_closet , with plain linen shorts and linen viscose jacquard outer from @the.sewing.club . This one was made on Dec. 30th, so no photos worn yet, but this was my second make of this pattern and I'm looking forward to wearing it in warmer weather. #ThePortmanteauShacket , @frenchnavynow_ , in a 21 wale cord from @galafabrics   with small bits of a novelty Halloween print fabric for some of the inner bits. When the #BalletBowSkirt , @matchymatchysewingclub , was released I decided the fabric I had set aside to make a Henrietta Skirt was better used for this, a skirt with a slit side is always going to get more wear from me. Another repeat sew for me, I made a linen pair in 2022 and wore then to shreds, they currently reside in my mending pile hoping for a replaced gusset and a patch or two. This version in a warmer and sturdier fabric has already gotten a few wears and I really should make some more. Made with a ramie and cotton twill. And the #ReznorSkirt , @elbe_textiles , in a bamboo knit from @sitkafabrics and some mesh. This skirt has gotten SO MUCH wear, and I already have some more fun printed fabric for a second. As for the ones I didn't get to. I have a beautiful fabric I intended for the #TrueBiasLora but still don't have the pattern yet,  it may still come to be. I still absolutely have plans for a #ZadieJumpsuit even though I haven't picked up the fabrics or pattern yet. It is still very much in mind. I think I will always want a #ZWGatherDress , but it takes a lot of fabric in my size and I have such a hard time finding dark grey linen in the tone I like. Maybe one day.

The debut outing for the @truebias Lora dress I finished a few weeks ago seems like a perfect first sewing project to post here. I love it! I shortened it a few inches to suit my 5'2" and consulted the very helpful True Bias blog post about adjusting the bodice (I wound up doing a sba). I will probably give myself a tiny bit more ease if/when I make another to make it easier to sit in, since this one is ever so slightly snug in the ribcage, but it felt great as a summer dress in between casual and dressed up ✨ #truebiaslora

One of the last proper summer sews for this year and I didn't even wear it 😂 This was supposed to be my birthday dress for my annual bbq in August, I finished sewing the buttons that morning - but just wasn't feeling it with the weather that we had! There’s something about a wedding that gives me the push to go out in a limb and make a garment. This is the #truebiaslora in lovely cotton poplin from @blackbirdfabrics I absolutely loved this make. The details are straightforward with just the right level of challenge to be interesting and feel polished. Don’t get me started on turning those button loops however; an early morning sewing session may have been spent cursing up a storm at those things 🪡🧵

Ready for an essay on this dress I made for my family photos? Ok let’s go. I bought the Lora dress as soon as it was released years ago but never made it. Even though it was said to bra/bra strap friendly it looked like it was going to sit too wide and therefore be a bit fussy so I knew I’d have to muslin it and that made me procrastinate even though I was smitten with the style and silhouette. Fast forward to now and I finally muslined and made it and guess what? It actually fit pretty great with few modifications. I used a thicker, more structured, heavily embroidered fabric with a scalloped edge so I did remove quite a bit of ease that would be good in a drapey fabric but doesn’t work in something like this. I also shortened it because I omitted the hem and it left it raw to incorporate the scalloped, embroidered edge. I do find the sleeve sits a bit wide and they do show bra straps sometimes but it’s not a dress I’m wearing all the time and chasing kids in so I don’t mind. I used the sleeve pattern piece but just cut it off a lot shorter, and used that embroidered edge again and did 4 rows of shirring. I did shorten the elastic in the sleeve by toooons. Like I used half as much probably. For the button loops I tried to use the embroidered fabric, but it was just way too thick and couldn’t be turned right side out so I ended up using just some plain white fabric for those instead. The result: stunning. I’m so pleased with it. The fabric is 100% cotton including the embroidery which is hard to find. It’s a gingham base and the thick embroidery makes the fabric crinkle up a bit almost like a seersucker even though it’s not one. The embroidery is directional and is in stripes so I did lots of pattern matching and it was totally worth it. With the scalloped edge on the sleeve and hem and all those pearl buttons and button loops - I feel like I made an heirloom piece to pass onto my kids. That wasn’t my intention when I started out on this project but I’m not mad about it! Pattern: @truebias #loradress #truebiaslora Fabric: embroidered cotton gingham from @landofoh on Etsy. It came from South Korea but didn’t take too terribly long to get here.

So, toile #1 - #truebiaslora by @truebias Things to note 📌 • whilst I made a straight size, I did apply my regular height adjustments, removing 1” from the “bodice” line and 2” from the skirt • i knew off the bat the bodice fit wouldn’t be quite right, but this is a wearable toile. What I liked ✅ • The skirt length is divine! • the cups for the bodice are excellent - that #truebias draft woth a C cup is absolutely brilliant for me. • I loved the sewing experience. I was initially intimidated but loved every second of the experience. What needs work ❎ • I need to shorten the straps significantly. Easily fixed. • Whilst the skirt and waist size is perfect, the bust portion is too large. This is easily fixed also. • The shape at the hip area was a little exaggerated, hidden here by the cardigan. This is, I think, down to the cotton fabric I used - this was a deliberate move on my part and nothing that a different fabric won’t fix. Overall thoughts 💭 Whilst I’m not sure this dress will make the cut cor the ceremony, I am so excited to make it again, and I also want to make a version with a hacked gathered skirt. Loved making the @truebias lora dress. Looks complicated but surprisingly easy to make and comfy to wear. Didn’t bother to make a toile 🙈 top and bottom are graded between 2 sizes but had to pinch couple inches out of the side seams around the bum, so probably could/should had done one straight size corresponding to my upper bust size. Thrilled to share my first #loradress from @truebias , which has officially become my favorite pattern. The elegant curved lines create a simple yet exquisitely flattering silhouette, and no doubt this will become a staple in my summer wardrobe. I made a couple adjustments, including shortening the spaghetti straps and opting for just 10 buttons. Braving the heat with this Ankara dress today. This pattern was a cool skill builder for me! I made it a few months ago not really knowing what to expect since it looked complex (lots of different parts, this was also I think my first project with a lined project) but the instructions and video tutorials were thorough and very easy to follow. These are the only buttons I've ever successfully installed so hooray for that! Mods: Almost none! Just shortened the straps by 3" and added a dart in the armscye to pinch out some gapping. I just realised I haven’t shared anything in a while and the algorithm is definitely going to punish me for this, so here’s a dress I made years ago that I forgot to share. I had this fabric in my stash for ages, I was so precious about it because it’s naked freakin ladies riding on freakin leopards! I mean does it get much better than this! I made this ages ago for a night out and I will confess it’s feeling a little tighter than the last time I wore it, but I can still just about squeeze in, and I still feel very cute. I used the True Bias Lora Dress and whilst I love this pattern and want to make it again, I had to learn the hard way not to use French seams, they always my go to with lighter weight fabric but in this case they made it really hard to insert the sleeve elastic and just added weird bulk around the arms. Still though, the sleeves are a thing of beauty. Lora Dress! 🌼🌸🌺🩵🪩🪡🧵✂️ July-August 2024 I made this Lora Dress by @truebias to attend a friend's wedding in August, and I actually finished it on time!! I started by grading between three sizes at the waist and hip and doing several rounds of muslins to get the fit right. I'm so glad I did! The fabric is a stretch cotton sateen, so I had a little bit of wiggle room (literally), but I didn't necessarily need it. The original pattern didn't include a skirt lining, but it was easy to add. I also picked a hem length somewhere between View A and View B, which I really liked. Overall, I'm SO happy with how it turned out, and I hope I can find another time to wear it! My sewing secret is that I play (relatively) fast and loose with fit. I rarely make a muslin and rarely make fit adjustments. Part of this is that I’m lucky to have measurements proportional to what patterns are drafted for, but part of this is that I know my body isn’t static. If I perfectly fit something to my body first thing in the morning, it’s not going to fit after lunch. When I made this dress back in April, I wasn’t happy with the fit. If you’re interested you can scroll back in my feed and see how the buttons were pulling across the front. I contemplated letting out the side seams, didn’t feel like it, tried it on again the other day and it fit perfectly! Bodies change, and I wish I had a magic wand that made all my clothes perfectly fit every time 🪄 anyway I felt super cute in this dress the other day! Whew it’s done! I breathed a sigh of relief when I tried it on and it fit! 😅 My measurements were all over the place for this pattern and I had to do a major small bust adjustment. I call this one “self portrait while being bitten by mosquitoes”. I took this quick pic in my new @truebias Lora dress, and called it good enough. I've been too lazy to photograph some of my recent makes, so I have a queue of things to post. This is my most recent make from this weekend. I wore it to work today because it's a million degrees out. I really love how the dress worked out, especially because I just went right for it without a toile. I went for the strappy version in a cotton that I’d bought a few months ago from work. @sewoveritlondon I was totally influenced by all our customers buying this up so quickly and got some for myself before we sold out! I absolutely loved sewing with cotton - everything stays where it should! and the pattern was so easy to follow and pretty quick to make up even with lots of new techniques for me. There was tiny little roulou loops with buttons and a lovely vintage style gathered bust. I can’t wait to make the sleeve version now in a floaty fabric! Also due to the 🍋 this is my entry for #sewfruity23 hosted by @blossomsandwich 🍋 Now where has that ☀️ gone?!

Braving the heat with this Ankara dress today. This pattern was a cool skill builder for me! I made it a few months ago not really knowing what to expect since it looked complex (lots of different parts, this was also I think my first project with a lined project) but the instructions and video tutorials were thorough and very easy to follow. These are the only buttons I've ever successfully installed so hooray for that! Mods: Almost none! Just shortened the straps by 3" and added a dart in the armscye to pinch out some gapping. Whew it’s done! I breathed a sigh of relief when I tried it on and it fit! 😅 My measurements were all over the place for this pattern and I had to do a major small bust adjustment. I've been too lazy to photograph some of my recent makes, so I have a queue of things to post. This is my most recent make from this weekend. I wore it to work today because it's a million degrees out. I really love how the dress worked out, especially because I just went right for it without a toile. Pattern: #LoraDress by @truebias in size 12, view B, no modifications. It fits really well but I think I might go back and shorten the shoulder elastic by 2 inches so it doesn't slip down. I call this one “self portrait while being bitten by mosquitoes”. I took this quick pic in my new @truebias Lora dress, and called it good enough. I wore this to @reggiesteadysew’s baby shower with my yellow @saltwatersandals and was so comfy. The fabric is so fun, I’m glad to have more of this one! Finally finished this #truebiasloradress that I started last year 🎉 It's taken me so long because when I initially cut it out it some how ended up being 3 sizes too big 😨 It has been a ton of work to carefully size it down that much... and I didn't photograph any of it because I was sure I was going to end up qutting before it was done lol I'm happy to report that it is finished and is a beauty. It's way too cold here to wear this, but I finally finished something in time to begin #memademay !! I think I started this dress after watching the Barbie movie, hence the pink, which gives a good estimate of how long I've been procrastinating. Anyway... It's the #truebiasloradress originally cut size 4, then downgraded the skirt to a 2, and ended up taking in a couple inches in the sides as well, so basically I should be better at measuring. If I made it again I would make the top in a size 2 as well because there's still a bit of excess under the arms and I would lower the neckline cause this cut is giving a lil more school marm than I would usually do. I also took the hem up 4.5" and at 5'6" it hits mid-calf for me. It wrinkles cause it's linen, but can we have a moment of applause for the perfectly matching @atelierbrunette buttons? I tried to fabric wrap regular shank buttons, and it wasn't happening so I was so excited when I found these guys instead! Stay tuned for the sleeved version. I love buttons! Although sewing button holes can be terrifying to sew, sewing them close to the end of a completed garment, it feels like a lot of hard work and effort can be wasted if something goes wrong. But, I believe having beautiful buttons really adds a certain something to a garment and really takes it to that next level.
