Me Made May - day 14 Big joyous holiday trousers and a top I haven't worn for years, all because MMM made me think differently and wear something slightly out of my ordinary zone. Thinking about these lovely lemony tiley trews yesterday made me want to wear them today, and then that lead to remembering I didn't have a lot that went with them. There are lots of colours in the trouser print, but I would naturally pick out the blue. But, something in me prodded me towards the red and this old Ogden cami, which I would not have picked because it has a print of its own, even if it's a tiny one. I don't really so print clashing, so this feels a bit brave. Also I get scared of wearing red in general, because it feels like wearing a big beacon that says LOOOK AT MEEEEEEE. But - again - I really like how they work together! And it made me think I should cut up an old unworn voue dress to make another Ogden. So it's all been terribly productive. My top 9 posts of 2024 are also some of my proudest projects of 2024 too. I feel I've really accomplished a lot this year and feel whilst taking time on some more complex projects I've also really engaged more with my craft, felt I've developed quite a bit and really made some things I'm proud of. I've also taken part more socially with sewing by attending a class and taking part in my first social sewing days. I've felt I've learned new techniques and really found that sewing and creating is an important part of relaxing and taking time for me. Of course I couldn’t go on holiday without making my vacation fits! First up was an ode to @truebias as I wore a Darla jumpsuit and Marlo cardigan. The jumpsuit, in a bold Merchant and Mills linen from @oakfabrics, has a zippered back (view C), and I added 3 inches to the hem to make it floor-sweeping. Marlo was my first time sewing a sweater, but won’t be my last. My fabric choice was merino wool also from Oak Fabrics, and I made view B with the side slit hack (which is brilliant!). I debated the buttons to use, but super pleased with my choice of heavy gold, organically wavy shank buttons - cardigan jewelry! Swimming Pool holiday dress of dreams! This hacked Darla was on my To Make list as soon as it became apparent that the temperatures this summer would be pretty scorching both this and the other side of the channel. Because a) beautifully light and cool viscose, and b) it looks like a swimming pool. This dress started out as a Penelope in 2023, when the pattern was new and shiny. I loved it but it didn't get much wear as the swimming pool style tie dye made me feel like it was for seriously hot weather only, and the sleeves didn't really work with 25° plus. Remembering that I had a chunk of leftover fabric, and how much I loved the Darla jumpsuit last summer, I decided an easy throw-on dress for holiday would be perfect. The front bodice and skirt is the @truebias Darla, as is, but I have added a frill, and hacked the back bodice to have a shirred panel for ease and comfort. I left the back opening for more breezy coolness and I am so glad I did, as even though the fabric is very light, having that little slice of flesh open to the elements makes it feel more holiday and allows the air to circulate. I also went for the standard skinny straps, but have used loops on the back to tie the strap into, meaning I can go straight or cross backed depending on how I feel. This was definitely one of the best self dyeinf sessions I've had in recent years - the colours and patterns of the dyeing still make me feel so holidayish - swipe to the end to see me blending in with the sunbeds too. I confess I only wore this once on holiday, not because I don't love it, but because I took way too many dresses and then lived in shorts and vests a lot of the time. But! Legs are a funny thing aren't they? I spend 90% of the year ignoring/hiding them and then for a month or so in the summer, suddenly they become less grey and more acceptable, to the point I don't really think about them at all. And I don't even mind my odd knees! Anyway, details on holiday outfit no.1 incoming ... Last summer I wanted to make a black broderie anglaise co-ord of top and skirt - the top was based on the Emporia Florence dress with Delilah sleeves, and the skirt was just a gathered single drop. The top when done, felt all too exposing of tummy and back, and the sleeves were not quite right. The skirt looked odd and frumpy and was cut up into shorts that also didn't work. Sad times all round. This spring I left the top on my dummy for several weeks, keeping it in sight and therefore in mind, and eventually decided that adding some kind of mini peplum/ruffle could be the solution. I also repositioned the flutter sleeves until they covered more armpit/side boob. Bingo, suddenly a top that works for hot holiday wear! I still want to have a skirt to go with this mashup (Florlilah? Delilence? FloDeli??) but I also love how it looks with these @truebias Darla shorts. I felt cool enough to wander the beautiful city of Bayonne all afternoon, but not like I was walking about in beachwear. And I didn’t even think about my knees once. The most perfect summer dress, it’s Darla! ☀️ I’ve been eyeing this dress up for ages as I absolutely adore the back design, but I’ve been nervous about the boob situation as bras are a no-go with this. After chatting with the lovely @ellie.joy.sews I decided to go for it, and add some bust cups (I commandeered some from an old sports bra) into the bodice, and it’s worked like a dream 😍 Don’t get me wrong, I had to be PULLED into this dress to feel secure, but the bust cups really help to add shape and support. I also shortened the elastic by a good few inches to get a nicely cinched waist. And how gorgeous is this fabric! This was a gift from my husband a couple of years ago that I’ve been hoarding waiting for the perfect project and I think I did it justice 🥰 I believe it was from @lamazifabrics and it is a viscose poplin. @truebias #truebiasdarla I made a straight size 12 for reference 💕

True Bias Darla Here is my first entry for #sewfruity25! I purchased this berry sheet set from @urbanoutfitters to use as a fruity fabric. I made a #truebiasdarla after wearing one from last summer recently and loved it. I made a size 4, jumpsuit version with adjustable straps and no other adjustments. I used the self fabric to line the bodice. The fabric was 100% cotton and I have plenty left to make a something else. I add rings and sliders to the straps so I can adjust it when I’m wearing it. I love @blossomsandwich helping us share the community’s love for fruit in fabric. I’ve been eyeing a sample of the #TrueBiasDarla for forever. But it felt too simple to actually buy 😕 I love that I’m at the point in my sewing journey where I have a few basic patterns that fit me well and I can confidently modify however I want. For this one, I hacked the “Camisole” (view A) from @ateliercharlotteauzou, that I made twice before and I know fits me well. I changed the neckline, lengthened it to hit the waist, and modified the back with princess seams. No big deal 😌 its not a perfect match of the 'darla', but its a fun cute dress non the less Tragically, I only bought 1m of this gorgeous fabric… so I had to piece scraps to make the pockets, and I couldn’t quite make the dress full maxi length. Also, I didn’t have the energy to change the overlocker thread, so I just did French seams everywhere. The inside turned out super clean ✨ and its my best hidden zipper to date

I have been sewing like a mad woman, trying to create a new wardrobe to fill in creative gaps, but mostly to feel the expression that’s been lingering underneath my skin the last several months. I can tell my body is going through a lot of change, both what typically comes with a woman moving out of her thirties and settling into 40, and with a regular person trying to do her best the best she can in a body that keeps telling her to slow down. Again it goes without saying I’m grateful for needles and thread, and a machine that hums like music, and can feel very much like a pulse beating underneath this same skin. So happy with my final #truebiasdarla jumpsuit! Finally got the fit right at my pit line. Previous measurements were all perfect except for the gaping at the pit line. Put myself through to a hair-pulling trial by trying to first figure out which size to make and hardest of all, how to alter to my pit circumference. After speaking to my mama, I decided to grade the side seams between the side and center back while ensuring that my waist measurement remains the same. Then I realised, I was actually making some sort of a dart manipulation! Duh! I had spent so much time exploring ways to alter the pit circumference that I almost gave up. I am glad i had pressed on. Fortunately, through my research, I unknowingly picked up knowledge from fitting techniques, grading sizes and even drafting a bustier (I was desperate I had thought of drafting my own jumpsuit to save myself from more greying hairs.) That aside, I truly enjoyed sewing this pattern! It makes me feel darn competent! And I love that every notch matched up (never quite happen to me when I draft my own patterns 😭!) Despite the struggle I had in altering the pit circumference, I deemed it’s still a win for me because I’ve learnt so much in the process! 🏆 {Changes made to the pattern : moved darts; tapered side seams & shorten strap length} Fabric: @leeann.textiles

We have had a warm snap here in Denver and it has me thinking about spring sewing, and more specifically the Darla pattern.⁠ ⁠ The long jumpsuit view of the Darla is a such a fun way to show off a bold print. I had a vision for my birthday dress and this is it. I sewed the @truebias Darla out of @riflepaperco fabric. I made a size 0 at the chest grading to a 4 at the waist. I made a couple muslins of the bodice to get the fit just right, doing an SBA and a broad back adjustment among other things. I shortened the skirt 8 inches to be midi length. I left off the pockets as I would never use them in this fabric. I also did French seams on the skirt. Lastly I added foam cups to the lining so I don’t need a bra. A lot of work and care went into this dress and I felt amazing wearing it. July 2025: This dress makes me happy and I’m so excited about how it turned out! I’ve been wanting to make the Darla dress for a while now. I loved the tie back closure right when I saw it! Then I got the heatwaves fabric and I knew these would look so good together. The dress comes together really nicely and the instructions are great! The bodice is fully lined which is really nice. This fabric is so happy and cool! It’s super lightweight so it feels great in this summer heat. It’s really nice and easy to sew with. And I love the little irregularities throughout the fabric. I can’t pick so you get three of basically the same photo. Finished this Darla Dress from @truebias last night. It’s a simple make and my third version - the first two were jumpsuits - one shorts and one pants. Went with the dress option this time but widened the straps more than double. I also cut the skirt right below my knees instead of a mini or maxi version. You also get an awkward twirl. You’re welcome.

This is a #darlajumpsuit from @truebias in a gorgeous double gauze from @rainbowfabrickilburn. The double gauze is so soft and light and I’m really pleased. I made a few modifications. I lengthened the bodice by an inch (having made a toile!) but then shortened the straps by 2 inches, so I’m not sure if I kind of cancelled myself out!! Also made the straps slightly wider, added 2 inches to the leg length and took at least an inch in a wedge out of the back when putting the zipper in as it was too big. In fact it now fits well and I don’t actually need to undo the zip to get it on and off. It gapes slightly at the front. What would I need to do to prevent that in the next one? Me Made May Day 16 … so happy today is warm and sunny 😎 It finally feels like dress season! I first wore this dress down in Nola when we visited for Easter and it definitely works well in the heat! This is the open back view, which I LOVE, and I have another one in rainbow linen already cut and ready to sew 🌈 This version is a 100% cotton Swiss dot. I’ve also made the zipper back view, which is nice, but I made that one out of Fableism cotton and it felt a little thick with the fully lined bodice. I prefer the bodice in a lighter weight fabric, looking back I should have used something lighter weight for the lining. I really like how adjustable the open back version is, as it takes the pressure off while fitting. Dress is the Darla by @truebias. I really appreciate how the bodice is fully lined, and also the detailed instructions, video sew-alongs and the step-by-step guide on how to make a small bust adjustment from @truebias . The fit couldn’t have been more perfect - the 4️⃣ rounds of mock ups using an IKEA tablecloth was absolutely worth it 💯 This Hokkoh cotton lawn fabric from @wearethefabricstore was also dream to handle- it irons easily, frays minimally and is SOOOO comfortable to wear 🌸. ME MADE MAY - WEEK 3 AND 4 RECAP You can see that I gave up at some point, not having any new me made items to wear 😅 tried styling them in a different way, but ultimately gave up with the challenge... sorry!! The hardest part for me was having to change your outfit every single day. I am a proud outfit repeater and truly feel that if your clothes aren't dirty, you can wear them for a few days before washing. So having to pick a new outfit, even when the one from the day before was not dirty, was really hard. Finished the Darla pattern from @truebias tonight in the jumpsuit version and definitely going to make the dress next! The back has a fun crossed tie detail that was similar to a RTW dress I saw in an ad (see last pic). 💙 Darla: I see it, I like it, I want it, I sew it! 💙 Dit patroon was liefde op het eerste zicht. Een paar weken geleden zag ik op een story van @yas._.minaatjes haar prachtige jumpsuit verschijnen. Ik kocht het patroon meteen aan. En in mijn hoofd was dit dit een perfecte match bij een prachtige stof van @madame__iris die ik al even op het oog had! Het patroon heeft 4 verschillende opties. Je kan kiezen uit een jurk of jumpsuit en een gesloten of open rug! Alle 4 hebben ze een gevoerd bovenlijfje met nepen, smalle schouderbandjes, zakken en het accent op de taille. Ik koos voor de korte jumpsuit met open rug. Het is de rug waar ik net helemaal verliefd op werd! Om deze vlot te kunnen dragen (zonder BH) verstevigde ik het volledige buitenste voorpand. Mocht je deze maken in een fijnere stof, zoals viscose, zou ik zowel het buitenste al het binnenste voorpand volledig verstevigen met vlieseline. De instructies zijn heel duidelijk én tijdens het naaien worden er heel veel tips meegegeven waarom bepaalde stappen gedaan worden, super handig! Alles is ook heel net afgewerkt vanbinnen en vanbuiten! De stof is een stevige, maar toch soepele linnen viscose in de meest prachtige kleuren en print. De speelse print past helemaal bij deze jumpsuit. Dit project was echt 100% me, 100% love, 100% happy sewing time! Echt een naaiproject straight from my sewing heart. Dit maakt me zo happy en net daarom is deze hobby de leukste van allemaal! 🌸Darling Darla🌸 I was so heavily inspired by the gorgeous Darla Jumpsuit @Heleen_Vlaeminck made (she made the short version, do check it out!!!), that I bought the pattern 2 minutes after I saw Heleen's post 🌸🤩 I printed it, cut the fabric and started sewing the next day. And oooooh, it was a FUN project to sew🤩 I had so much fun that I didn't want to stop when my hubby reminded me that we had plans to out, and I have to admit that on our date I sometimes didn’t *actually* hear what he was saying because I was thinking about the next steps in this sewing project 🤣 (Please lovely people, don't tell him. As long as nobody tells him, I think I'm safe, because I don't think he ever reads my captions🤫🤫🤫). The cheerful fabric was part of the fun of course, but besides that, this pattern is so cleverly constructed and well explained and the techniques ensure beautiful finishes on the insides. I Truly loved the process 🥰 Now, I believe I have talked about jumpsuits and toilets before, right? I actually told myself not to go into that subject again writing captions, so I'm not. But, Ok. This is a straight size 6 with the skirt shortened by 2”. 💐 Ilford Jacket 💐 We had the most gorgeous weekend celebrating my sister’s hen! I have been wearing my new Ilford all weekend with every outfit imaginable, but of course ended up getting photos when looking my most fancy 💁🏻‍♀️ I would say this is actually quite a casual jacket but I love I can chuck it on for dressing up too! I was aiming for a super-handy chore jacket with a more slouchy fit and lots of pockets - it definitely hits the brief. The babycord is beautifully soft and light-weight, perfect as a light layer on these (finally) warm days. The cuffs, collar and inside seams are all lined/bound with a vintage @lauraashleyuk fabric that used to belong to our mum many years ago. It gives me a little smile spotting it and thinking of her 🌻 swipe for a rare photo of the four big sisters (there are actually more of us!) - I’m wearing my True Bias Darla in Fabric Godmother fabric again!
