I finally got to go swimming!! 🐠🧜🏻 Making a maternity swimsuit to beat the heat has been an adventure! First I planned to follow @tatasolstudio tutorial to hack the #mncottesloe, but with the split size range I’d have to buy both ranges to fit my measurements 🤬. Then I wanted to hack the #mncara maternity tee into a rash guard, but I’m already completely outside the size range (why does a maternity pattern have such a narrow size range??). Finally, I decided to try Jalie for the first time, and hack in some extra belly room. Finally success! Fabric is “sparkle leopard” 4-way stretch from @stonemountainfabric . Swipe to see the ✨action. Patterns are the #valerierashguard and #jalie3351 swim shorts by @jalie_patterns . Pattern pros: huge size range!! Fit well with minimal alterations. The shorts don’t float up or fall down in the water, and THEY HAVE POCKETS! Pattern cons: none really. The finishing on the shorts seemed a little overkill and would be nice if the rash guard had a shelf bra, but that’s it. Sizing/alterations: for the shirt I made size AA, but graded to size FF for the waist on the front piece only. I lengthened that piece by 4.5” and then gathered it all up. Also added a high round back adjustment. For the shorts I made a size W, but split the one piece waistband into front and back. The front waistband I made size FF, and was able to stretch the bottoms to fit. Also did a full inner thigh adjustment. I think the belly room is a bit bit, but hopefully that means it’ll fit all summer! The #mncara tee is definitely my favorite maternity tee! I much prefer how this fits compared to some store bought ones. As the weather has been warming up I was hit with another round of “I have nothing to wear” since last time I was this pregnant it was October. Unfortunately I don’t have a lot of knits in my fabric stash and am trying to limit buying anything new, so my options for what to make are limited. I was originally going to save this happy face fabric I got in a random bundle from @elvelyckan.design for some fun outfits for kids, but I’m sort of glad I went ahead and used it on myself instead. It’s delightfully cozy and wears so nicely. Thankfully here is enough leftover that I can make Gwen a matching shirt, if I ever get around to that. Pattern is @megannielsenpatterns Cara Shirt that I bought as part of a bundle of maternity patterns when I was pregnant the first time around and never got around to using. I like how the pattern sews up overall, it sort of feels like magic how it perfectly hugs my bump. I had to sew it with a narrower seam allowance since my measurements put me at a smaller size than was actually comfortable to wear. The only thing I don’t love is that the front feels like it hangs a little awkwardly long. But maybe that’s just growing room that will look right as I get bigger. Heading into the new year 30 weeks pregnant, and the countdown is on now 🎉🎊. . If you missed it in my stories- we have a scheduled c-section on the books! It feels very strange to already know exactly what day she’ll be here, but I also kinda like it 💁🏻‍♀️ (unless she decides to come early on her own, of course 😅). . 2020 was obviously a very strange and hard year. And who knows what 2021 will look like. I know we will still have some c*vid related difficulties with an early March baby, even with the fresh start of the new year. 1. No, I’m definitely not this pregnant (yet...). But I have popped in a way that I can’t really keep under wraps anymore, so we’re on to body con dresses with ruching already.⁣ including this guy! Seen here at something around 35 weeks first time preg. 2. It’s a mashup of the @megannielsenpatterns Cara top and Erin skirt. Size UP in Erin, she is tiny! Also, I stole the back vent from the @colettpatterns Mabel skirt. Because I’m human and I walk. ⁣ 3. I made this in two colors, both in the “4-way stretch rayon blend ponte” from @emmaonesock . This stuff has held up really well. I wore both dresses a ton, then lent them out to a pregnant friend, and now have them back. 1. I love that I was able to take these photos outside. Come to me warmth!! . 2. I’m loving this pattern! . This is my first time trying out the Chapman Cardigan and it worked out pretty well. I did alter the front so the neckband covers the hem band and also slimmed the sleeves at the wrists quite a bit, but otherwise it fits well and sewed up fast! . I was tempted to buy the Blackwood cardi for #sewmystyle2019 but I already had this one and it is just way too similar 😊. Still in the spirit of sewing cardigans this month! I made pants! Not the most exciting make but hopefully very useful for the spring (it's coming, right?) and summer. They're elasticated (anyone remembers non-elasticated pants...?) with room to grow. I used some lovely cotton/linen/elastane fabric from @the_rag_shop and the #s8841 pattern. I guess I could've sized down, but then maybe I shouldn't... The pants are supposed to sit on your lower hip but I didn't do any adjustments and they're sitting comfortably on my natural waist instead 😅 The tshirts are #nl6217 and #mncara and I made them a while ago. I made this two weeks ago and have debated since if I should post a picture of it or not. I got stuck in this "it's not the pattern, it's me" kind of thinking of the sewing community online. It's a wonderful and supportive community, but there are a lot of glossy photos and descriptions of sewing fails that never blames the pattern. Well, I've made dozens of t-shirts over the years, from patterns of several different pattern companies, but this has by far the worst fit. So it's not me, it's the pattern. . It's the Megan Nielsen Cara maternity tee, which I bought because I was tired and nauseous and wanted to skip the step of redrawing my usual patterns. Maternity-wise it has a good fit - except that the very sharp curve on the front is a pain to hem evenly - but t-shirt-wise around the shoulders it has got several problems. The shoulders are too wide, the armholes too deep, there is fabric bunching under the armpits and the sleeves are identical front and back so that it has a poor fit on the back of the shoulder. The instructions are good, except one part: pressing the neckline. I never do this normally, just very lightly stretch the fabric when I topstitch. That usually works just fine, but these instructions insisted on the importance of pressing, so I tried it. It couldn't get any worse at that point, I thought. Well, it got worse. With topstitching the whole thing went wobbly and bubbly, and not at all nice. . I will never wear this top, in fact I just took a picture before I cut it up for maternity underwear instead. I've since redrawn the TATB Agnes top and the Named Ruska for maternity wear. I added a bit to the overall length and 12 cm extra to gather on the front - that's it. The fit is perfect. Should have done that to begin with... . Swipe to see the Agnes front bodice (blue) and the Ruska front bodice (red) laid over the Cara front bodice for comparison. I don't really now why the fit is so bad, because I haven't had this problem with other MN patterns.
