I adore this make - it’s the Kelly Curve Skirt from @megannielsenpatterns made out of this gorgeous needle cord from my January @sewhayleyjane box Never in a million years did I think I’d be able to make this but then I saw it was suitable for beginners I just had to give it a go and I’m so glad I did. I feel very chic wearing it and think it would look fantastic paired with a cozy turtle neck top in the winter/autumn or a strappy top in the summer For reference I’m 5ft 7 and made no alterations to the length of this and made a straight size 24 - it has an elasticated back so is super comfortable. Took Penny to her first time seeing The Nutcracker at @bostonballet over the weekend! Here’s what we wore 😉. I made myself a new skirt using #MNkelly . I widened the skirt pattern pieces for extra gathers and fullness, and obviously added a bottom tier as well. I also swapped out the scoop pockets for inseam pockets. Pink and white stripe fabric is a super lovely crepe back sateen twill from @measurefabric . My top is a hacked square neck #MNRowan tee in a printed knit from @joann_stores ! **Fabric gifted by @fluidplusdrape in exchange for a post.** I’ve been drooling over this Merchant and Mills linen ever since I started sewing for myself almost a couple years ago. When I finally got my hands on this beauty c/o @fluidplusdrape, I had the hardest time choosing what to make. The gingham in sunny mustard and blush pink colors scream 🌞, so it was a no-brainer that a summery outfit was in order. But which one?? I ultimately decided on this summer picnic set, sweet together and versatile as separates. DETAILS ☀️ The tank is the Laurence Top (View A) by @vivianshaochen, an exact replica of one that @sarahb_sews owns because I adore hers! 😍 Sewn in a size 2, but feels quite large on me: lots of gaping at the arm holes and especially at the v-neck. When I lean over, it’s a SHOW (nothing to see here, folks 😜). No mods except for French seams all around and removing the bust darts — see @helens__closet’s tutorial. ☀️ The bottom ⬇️ is the Kelly skirt in View D size 4* by @megannielsenpatterns, with an elastic back waistband — see @megannielsenpatterns’ blog for tutorial. *I should note that the mods I made plus the elastic waistband hack makes the size choice fairly arbitrary. ⬇️ Mods to Kelly skirt to reduce volume: - Subtracted 2-3/8” from each front skirt panel width and 4-1/2” total from back skirt panel. - Reduced height of waistband by 1”. I used 1-1/2” wide elastic. - Shortened skirt by 2” but let out some of the hem. ☀️ Note: Should not have messed with the skirt widths. As one lower button popped off after another while I leapt over flowers/plants taking these photos, I realized that a poofier skirt allows for more range of motion for a button-up skirt! 😂 So if you want to be able to perform an arabesque 🙃, the volume helps. ☀️Fabric: Merchant and Mills Wes gingham linen from @fluidplusdrape, a brand new fabric shop currently carrying M&M, Atelier Brunette, Fableism, and deadstock fabrics. #WinterSewingRoundup Its been an odd few months and my sewing flow has been interrupted by Life, but I have managed a few makes. I envisaged these items as an outfit but realistically I have not and will never wear them all together - too much color and too much pattern for me! Having said that they all look great with basic black, which I love. The skirt is #MNKelly in a brushed cotton sateen from @Spotlightstores, it matches the #TALPuffShirt i made last year and love to bits. This is such a lovely skirt pattern, I have made 2 of them already. The cut is so flattering and those perfect pockets… there are pockets and then there are @MeganNielsenPatterns pockets! The red jacket is #ponajacket from @Helens_Closet in a felted wool from @Homecraft.Textiles. I love this pattern, its quite fabric-hungry but it is so good to wear. It dresses up or down and goes with everything. This little number saw a lot of wear this past season. The black jacket is #TessutiVerona in boiled wool from @MaaiDesign. The wool is deliciously light and warm and the jacket wears like a cardigan rather than a coat so very comfy. MMM day 30 and I'm wearing one of my @megannielsenpatterns #mnkelly skirts. Not my first time posting it but worth repeating because 1) it's a fave and 2) I'm pretty proud of my pattern matching here, both at the center front and the side seams! If memory serves I think my only mods other than adjusting length were to slightly increase the fullness and to slightly narrow the waistband. Wide waistbands just don't seem to work well for my height. In the middle of winter I miss wearing skirts so decided to pull one out today - @megannielsenpatterns #mnkelly - in honor of these unusual 50° temps! This is a @moodfabrics cotton sateen and I had fun pattern matching 😄 With this pattern I always do these mods: -Reduce finished width of the waistband to 1 1/4" with a single button since I'm only 5' 1" -Make the gathered version but almost to the knee, and add a few inches to the width for a tiny bit more fullness -Leave the pockets flapping free when gathering to reduce bulk, then baste them in place flat over the gathering before attaching waistband (not for the faint of heart, this makes gathering more complicated since you have to gather separately on either side of the pocket edge) -Add the buttonholes before attaching the waistband bc I discovered my buttonhole foot messes up the top buttonhole if the waistband is in the way! #mnkelly #sewover50 #isewmyownclothes #petitesewing #patternmatching

Scrapbusting Kelly Skirts. . I've kept hold of two corduroy remnants for years and was going to get rid of them. I brought the Kelly Skirt by Megan Neilsen (buttons + pockets = perfect) as a good basic for my wardrobe. I decided I might be able to make a patchwork skirt, then low and behold, I could get a skirt from each colour. . A very simple and easy make, depending on your feelings towards buttonholes. One change i made on the green version - i lengthened the pocke lt by 1-2inches for more space! . I accidently cut two front right skirt pieces, so I had to patch the bottom left using fancy stitch, but you wouldn't really know! Bodge life. . @megannielsenpatterns #mnkellyskirt I finally made my Kelly skirt after hoarding this pattern for years. This pattern was an pleasure to sew. I love Megan Nielsen patterns. The patterns I have made are all very clear and have great diagrams that are printer friendly. The patterns have minimal pieces and the construction is so fuss free. I have been wanting an army green denim style skirt for ages, but it's just never hit the top of my make list. I ummed over the length way longer than I should have but I think it's OK. However, I don't love it. Bugger...... But I think I can fix it. I had to make the waistband bigger so I made the whole skirt at the larger size but I should have graded back in for my hips. The skirt now sits out and does my figure no favours. I also top stitched my seams so I was hesitant to unpick them. I should have just done it. My #OOTD is an #MNprotea and #MNkelly combo! Both hacked because I had a rare need to feel extra 🙈 I love the square neckline of the Protea blouse, and for this navy linen make I wanted to add an elasticated waist so I could pair with high waisted bottoms. I did need to reduce the bodice width a bit for the waist length I cut, so I would grade down a size or two next time. I had the striped, mid weight cotton fabric saved for a pant pattern but decided it would make for a nice, warmer Kelly piece. With the extra fabric scraps I added a tier because why not ! The selvage was a little too lovely to throw away so I added some strips as pocket detail. Also this ootd was for a special occasion. On the weekend I put together my Kelly Skirt by @megannielsenpatterns using a thick red cotton with sparkle. I'm not sure what kind of fabric it is, since I bought it at the Textile Museum's Textile Bazaar. Scrapbusting Kelly Skirts. . I've kept hold of two corduroy remnants for years and was going to get rid of them. I brought the Kelly Skirt by Megan Neilsen (buttons + pockets = perfect) as a good basic for my wardrobe. I decided I might be able to make a patchwork skirt, then low and behold, I could get a skirt from each colour. . A very simple and easy make, depending on your feelings towards buttonholes. One change i made on the green version - i lengthened the pocke lt by 1-2inches for more space! . I accidently cut two front right skirt pieces, so I had to patch the bottom left using fancy stitch, but you wouldn't really know! Bodge life. . @megannielsenpatterns #mnkellyskirt I finally made my Kelly skirt after hoarding this pattern for years. This pattern was an pleasure to sew. I love Megan Nielsen patterns. The patterns I have made are all very clear and have great diagrams that are printer friendly. The patterns have minimal pieces and the construction is so fuss free. I have been wanting an army green denim style skirt for ages, but it's just never hit the top of my make list. I ummed over the length way longer than I should have but I think it's OK. However, I don't love it. Bugger...... But I think I can fix it. I had to make the waistband bigger so I made the whole skirt at the larger size but I should have graded back in for my hips. The skirt now sits out and does my figure no favours. I also top stitched my seams so I was hesitant to unpick them. I should have just done it. I've finished my first (and only) sewing commission! I'm not sure if it counts because it was for my mum and she paid me in gummy bears and pumpkin soup. But I've never sewn a garment for anyone else before, so this feels very exciting (and terrifying). She still needs buttons but we're trying to work out the size and placement that my mum is most comfy with, to work around her arthritis. It's a @megannielsenpatterns Kelly skirt sewn in a gorgeous grey-green wool (it was a dream to sew with, even if it made my hands super itchy!). It has such a beautiful drape. The skirt has an eslasticated back and the hem is just past knee length. We made some sizing modifications to suit my mum's body and comfort. I finally finished another dress! 🎉🎉 I actually finished this one right before all the COVID craziness started but didn’t have a chance to wear it before lockdown happened. I made three Kelly skirts that you will see throughout the upcoming sewalong, and I’ll share them all with you! Starting with my most recent one - made from this light a flowy striped fabric that I’ve had in my stash forever (and I can’t remember where it came from 😬), that I added a subtle ivory fringe trim to the pockets and placket. What’s great about Kelly is that you can easily make it out of a variety of fabrics with all the different style options. Yesterday I set out to start sewing a skirt and then I ended up sewing the entire thing, including the 12 buttons and buttonholes 🙈. I have been dreaming about a skirt like this for a while and then when I was watching Enola Holmes 2 I wanted one even more. The skirt is the #kellyskirt by @megannielsenpatterns which is made to be a midi or above the knee length skirt. But I wanted something that looks kind of like a modern Victorian walking skirt so I added a lot of length. (Eventually I might just make a walking skirt because why not?). This is also the first long skirt that is actually where I want it length wise. Again I’m tall so when ever I’ve tried on long skirts or dresses they are always shorter than they should be on me (I had to have length added to my wedding dress). This is where the perks of sewing your own clothing comes in 😁. I might change it to a midi length eventually but I’m going to stick with this length for now. I also think it will work for multiple seasons since I can wear tights underneath when it’s cooler or open up some bottom buttons when it’s warmer. Happy holidays everyone!! 🎄☃️ I got to wear my Christmas dress to Christmas dinner tonight and it was fantastic. I can’t wait to sew more in the coming year! •-•-•-•-• I really rushed through making this dress because I decided to make it on a whim when I saw the 75% off Christmas cottons doorbuster at Joann’s just over a week before I had to fly away from my sewing machine! Since the fabric was so cheap, I was able to treat it like a practice dress and try some new things. I wanted to learn how to line a bodice properly with the fabrics encasing the zipper, so I used a cute ginger breadmen and women cotton as lining. This was also my first attempt at making a more fitted bodice and I was so terrified of making something too small I actually ended up cutting it two sizes too big! Even after I cut off some excess fabric I still had to use a ribbon from a ready to wear skirt in order to cinch the waist up. Even with all it’s flaws, it’s super swishy and lovely to wear. Day 3 of #sewphotohop - All in one or Separates (Sorry for the blurry picture it's a bit dark here today 😬) . #mnkellyskirt from @megannielsenpatterns and self drafted tank top (that ended up much tighter than I expected 😅) . I think separates dominate my makes, although I've always been most excited about sewing dresses (for whatever reason, because I never wore them so much. Maybe until recently when I started enjoying much more what I'm wearing 😊). However, I want to put more thought into planning my wardrobe so the practicality and ability to combine will have even more importance - I think separates will then win without a contest 😁 A dear friend of mine recommended me recently Marie Kondo's book about tidying up, and much to my surprise it profoundly changed how I look at things now. Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to sort through my stuff yet (just part of my wardrobe) as most of it is still in Vienna, but what I did manage to do felt so liberating that I can't wait to do it with everything. It genuinely felt like tidying up my whole life, which is exactly what I want to proceed to do. I still have some unsorted matters, but it's all in progress. There are some sudden realisations, but also gradual changes. Just another outfit combo … One of my first few #SagebrushTop with the #MnKellySkirt (a recent edition to my me made wardrobe). The Sagebrush Top is made in a @atelierbrunette viscose that I got from @lamazifabrics as a remnant ages ago. The pattern itself is from @fridaypatterncompany and is goes up to 152cm/60” bust and 160cm/63” hips. The Kelly Skirt is a new @megannielsenpatterns and comes in 2 size ranges 0-20 & 14-34. Size 34 has body measurements of 132cm/52” waist and 157cm/62” hips. Lately I’ve mostly been sewing for others, however when I have sewn for myself it has been a pattern test. I pick my pattern tests by either something that fills a wardrobe gap or something different to my usual style. This is the Kelly skirt by @megannielsenpatterns and fills the ‘work appropriate but comfortable’ skirt gap. There are two options- pleated skirt or gathered with elastic back waistband and two lengths. The measurements are: 24”-52” waist and 34”-62” hip. I went for the midi gathered/elastic option to tick the comfy and appropriate boxes. I used this lovely green linen from @aandrfabrics which was meant to be something else before I changed my mind. The Kelly skirt by @megannielsenpatterns is progressing nicely. And since I’ve never made button holes, it has kind of come to a progress pause. I better hurry before the #aussiesummer is over! Every day I think: tonight when the kids are in bed I shall get the button foot out, read the instructions and test test #test But then I am tired and don’t want to try my button tests when I am exhausted and bound to make mistakes and inevitably put myself off the entire thing altogether. But I shall persevere! Because I love this #skirt already. And with the matching fabric top, I can even wear them together as a pretend dress. Giorgie, my florist, took my #memademay pic today. I stopped in for a near bi-weekly floral uplift and one gorgeous pink hydrangea and six light and dark pink peonies later...and he gave my those rainbow roses. He’s got some rainbow hue ones too, but these had me drooling and #ohmygod #imsuchagirl ... that’s my #mnkellyskirt from five years ago. I always had to wear it higher, usually with a button open.
