TRAILBLAZER VEST  One of my 2023 sewing goals is outerwear and before diving right into coat making (I have great plans) I started of with a @twigandtale #TrailblazerVest . This project was challenge enough. It took a year for me to settle on the right fabric.  I ended up using medium-weight wool on the outside and 80/20 cotton-polyester teddy on the inside. I am quite happy with this choice for a first try.  With the vest, I definitely could have adjusted the fit, but I was worried to size down (I think I could have done so without issue and still have enough room for a warm sweater underneath. Now, the vest fits well, but my personal preference with warm wear is always close-fitting. Nonetheless, as it is the vest has already served me well.  Sidenote: I had originally intended to add the front shield, but realized how well the vest fits as an added layer under my winter coat, so I omitted it. My favourite winter outfit. Wool jumper, wool skirt, leggings This is my latest Eloisa jumper from @namedclothing book Building the pattern. I love the neckline and the sweeping hem. This is made up in a lighter 100% wool jersey from #wearethefabricstore Again I made a size 4 ( one size down from my measurements), shortened been by 3" and did a 1.5cm forward shoulder adjustment. Can anyone recommend a skirt pattern like this one? It's a rtw and is wearing out. It's made from about 200gm wool and is lined. It doesn't have negative ease like alot of the jersey patterns. I love to be out in nature and I equally love to explore new spots or my backyard forest (it's not really in my backyard, but ten minutes bike ride qualifies as my wider backyard 😁). A few weeks ago, I was asked by the lovely people at @megannielsenpatterns if I would be interested in sewing up the updated Virginia Leggings for their makers round-up... obviously I jumped at the chance! Not really a wearer of "activewear", I made mine in super soft @mindthemaker ECOVERO viscose jersey. Perfect for both snuggling at home and out walking the dog! I couldn't resist making a matching Jarrah sweatshirt in @mindthemaker jacquard knit and coordinating cream ribbing 💚🤍 Both fabrics from @lamazifabrics

After what felt like a long hiatus of not making anything for myself, I was asked to test out the new and improved #MNvirginialeggings by @megannielsenpatterns. I’ve been exclusively wearing leggings for a while now so this was the perfect time for me to try making my own. For some reason I was scared to. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Well, wow. Just wow. I so wish I had done this sooner. I bought 2 different pairs of maternity leggings that were overpriced and such poor quality. If you are pregnant and into sewing Or want to try, I absolutely recommend making this pattern. It was SO easy and they turned out exactly how I wanted. I did the full length and the wide waistband (with wide elastic) and added 3inches to go up over my belly. My fabric is also glorious and from @patchhalifax. When @amandamichelephotography snapped this picture she said, “check out those back muscles!” I chuckled, but also had no idea I even had any. I never see my back, so I just never really thought about it. I’ve done my best to stay consistent with working out and taking care of my body, and this picture is like my little trophy to celebrate my efforts and encourage me to keep going. But it also made me think about my own growth. It made think about all the times I feel like I’m standing in the same place for months on end. Sometimes we just need another set of eyes to help us see ourselves correctly, to help us see the growth that’s happening in the places that are just slightly out of view. Here’s a first. This is the first time I’ve sewn a complete repeat. But these black leggings had become my most worn make of all time (by like 100x). 🧨 About a year ago I made two pairs of @megannielsenpatterns Virginia Leggings and modified them a bit. I cut the petite length minus 2” more in length, then used the yoga waistband hack from Megan Nielsen’s blog. They are SO comfortable this way and I was wearing the black ones so often this WFH winter that I needed another pair. This is a size 14 and the fabric is cotton spandex knit from @melanatedfabricsco . Also worn with an old #athinatop which I should also revisit because I wear these all the time. 🧨 This pattern was just re-released with additional views that include the high waistband and different lengths (including bike shorts, which I also made last year and are 💯). (I CAN) SEW THIS! Up until one year ago, every sewing project I tackled came together with equal parts swearing, ripping and sewing (and to be frank, not all of them came together as garments I loved). But it’s true what they say - practice makes perfect (or at least better). I have now reached a point where I think “I could need a pair of new leggings”, and a couple days later, I have made them. That feeling is truly unbelievable. I never understood how some people can find sewing *relaxing*, but (besides the clatter of the machine) I am getting there myself. I especially love the steaming/ ironing throughout the process. So meditative! They’ve expanded the pattern’s views and now have a wide waistband option, the option to add cuffs, and even a biker shorts view as well! I love making my own leggings because I can literally customize them to fit my body exactly. I can put in an elastic at the top so they don’t fall down (game changer!!!!) or even leave the hem off at the bottom because my feet always rip them anyways 😆 Also, how could I not add a matching bra to make a set?! I remember being in a yoga class one day, we were in Savasana and the teacher said we could put our palms down if we needed to be more grounded or palms up if we were in a space to receive. I took what I needed that day and turned my palms down to remind myself I was supported and anchored. Ever since that class I always ask myself what I need - palms up or palms down? Both are sacred spaces and both steady me in their own beautiful ways.
