How super cute is this skirt? I feel very chic in this outfit. It’s been a really, really long time (about 25 years) since I’ve made a skirt as it is not something that I usually wear. However, I did a sewing class at @sewingadventures learning how to insert zips (as I am terrible at it!) and thought I should put it to the test. I saw the @megannielsenpatterns #mnbrumby skirt and was drawn to the classic silhouette and big pockets. This was such an enjoyable sew, with clear instructions, although I did change the back zip and conceal it. Finally got to use this lovely @doopsdesigns fabric which has been in my stash for a while. I just finished my new favorite skirt! This is the Megan Nielsen Brumby Skirt and it is so beautiful in this gorgeous Stone Mountain and Daughter Yarn Dyed Cotton. 😍When I saw this fabric I knew I had to have it and the Brumby skirt seemed like a perfect match. I took time and care to pattern match all parts of this skirt. I added two inches to the length of the skirt because I love a wide hem but there were no other modifications that I made. This is a size 8 of you want to compare your measurements to mine. I love the green and gold zipper in the back. Scroll to the last photo to understand how little thread I had when sewing the hem at the end. There was three inches of bobbin thread left 🤪nothing like cutting it close. This will be kept for a future special occasion and then worn constantly after that. And finally, here is my Brumby Skirt from #megannielsenpatterns !🌷 It's a lighter weight, striped woven from Hobby Lobby (last summer/fall), and then I chose a pretty floral cotton woven/ quilting cotton print as my waistband and pocket facings! I love knowing that bright print is there, tucked away. 😊 * I do need to make a smaller size next time as this one was taken in at the back waist, after I was done, by about 3.5". I need it to sit higher on my waist than I had planned for, and I forgot that it would mean a smaller measurement than my full waist. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Also the wind kept blowing...the skirt doesn't really puff out like it shows in some of these photos. * Please don't mind the beginner type posing, it'll improve over time... hopefully! 😜 Simple RTW Tshirt. It's been 2.5 years since we moved back to the little coastal town I grew up in. 2.5 years of struggling to get back on our feet, not being able to afford those little luxuries. I have to say that today’s episode of I Love Liberty comes heavily influenced by @scarletjonesmelbourne I saw they had used these two fabrics in their recent collection and couldn’t help but make up my own interpretation of high summer with these gorgeous Liberty fabrics. The skirt is the Brumby skirt by @megannielsenpatterns in one of Liberty’s new fantastical collection prints and the top is the Torrens box top by @munaandbroad from their standard collection purchased from @the_strawberry_thief . I was interested to try the Torrens box top as I’m at the top of the range for most standard sized patterns and I can’t shop at “normal “ shops because they don’t stock my size. Muna and Broad focus their patterns for fat people and if you are larger than their size range they will grade up the pattern for you for free. I made the smallest size A which matched my hip and waist measurement and it’s pretty spot on. I didn’t do any adjustments. The body length is good although I’d say the long sleeve is more bracelet length on me (#sewingtall). I watched the tutorial which was helpful for setting in the sleeve. Overall I’d say it’s a win and works well in Liberty. I’ll be interested to try out more of their patterns. The perfume I’m wearing today is Whispers in the Library and it has this wonderful scent of old paper and books and wood. Which is exactly what I plan to get up to this afternoon, some light reading. It’s very subtle and good for a not too hot day. I can imagine myself sitting in a library surrounded by books reading Jane Austen. It’s all perfectly pleasant. So I think this outfit will be in high rotation for late summer/autumn as we ease our way into 2022. Recently made a cami out of the leftovers from my Brumby skirt. It is, my first Ogden cami! Here it is inside out, showing the lining. It was a nice quick sew that looks pretty slick 😉 Next time, I'm going to try it with bust darts for a more fitted look. A third Brumby skirt! This is one of my favourite patterns to make. I love the wide waist band, gathered skirt and wide slouchy pockets. This cute mid-weight linen fabric has a plenty of texture with lots of variations in the weave. It looks cream in photos but is quite a dark cream/beige/natural colour. I'm thinking scraps would make a good kitchen pinny. I have plans for sewing some more basics to pair with it so I can wear for work or these hot summer weekend days we are having! Twirling into the week in my new skirt using the most stunning fabric from @m_o_l_l_y_m_o_l_l_y. I knew I wanted to choose a pattern that would really let this fabric shine. I used my tried and tested self-drafted quarter circle skirt and added the waistband from the @megannielsenpatterns Brumby Skirt as I really love the fit and curve of the waistband piece. I then added red piping to make the waistband pop. @megannielsenpatterns Brumby Skirt in a heavy linen from @thedrapery that was not a remnant! I bought this fabric years ago to make a dress but only got 1.5 metres. So a skirt it is! I completly stuffed up the waistband by sewing it upside down so the waist isn't as lovely as it should be. I just couldn't face unpicking the overlocking and the gathering. I thought the piping was a good idea and then a mistake once the shirt was finished. After over a years break I actually like this skirt now. I think I’m a light denim it would be really nice and no more piping. Lol. However the piping was fun to make and put into the seam lines so it’s all still a win for me. Plus I decided last night I would make myself wear this skirt again and discovered that I really do like it. It’s amazing what perspective can do for you. Gratuitous violet pictures to follow. Top is a RTW oldie but a goodie out of merino Jersey I got from Costco about 12 years ago before I actually appreciated the wonder that is merino jersey. Happy Saturday! My formal pledge for #memademay2020 is to wear and combine all of my handmade wardrobe, and to sew items that are glaring gaps in it. I may not be able to participate every day but I’m going to see how far I can go with my existing handmade clothing. The Brumby skirt by @megannielsenpatterns has the best pockets! It’s also a nice departure from elasticated waistbands :) The fabric was a vacation purchase from @clothshoplondon - it’s light and lovely and it’s a safe bet to say I’ll be returning for more next summer. Day 4! I’m a little sad about working from home and wearing #memadeeveryday bottoms. I don’t think my entirely male coworkers would appreciate it though 😂 I love this #mnbrumby skirt but also am not quite satisfied with it. The pockets are fantastic and I in general love the flowiness, but I don’t love how it poofs out a little bit at the bottom of the waistband. I have some fabric I’m eyeing to make another one, so I’ll see how that goes with it. Week off work = sleeping in = late nights sewing... resulting in another brumby skirt! This time, in a 'caper green' linen. I love it. Aim is to sew some long lasting mix'n'match pieces for work wear this year. I think this will be an all rounder though, it's already been to a BBQ and worn to work.
