Cute base layers for Christmas. The kids picked out this fabric from @discoveryfabrics sometime in the last year because the cats are so cute. They only had a bit left so it's supplemented with some silver. My kids will wear these tons for skiing, under clothes on cold school days, and as jammies while camping. It's #memademay2023 and my kids really wanted to go to an exercise park for seniors today. We met up with friends and it was great. I wear this fleece all the time. Beas wearing some pants I made her as skiing base layers but she wears them often just to be warm. More evening Christmas sewing. My son found this fabric at @discoveryfabrics in the fall and asked for something to be sewn from it. I agreed to base layers for Christmas. I told my daughter she could pick a print too and she decided this was the best one so more matching cuties. I made similar sets last year and they get a ton of use for skiing, cold days outside, and to wear at night while camping. The period between early January and early March is birthday season in my house as my birthday and my kids birthdays follow each other in quick succession. I’m usually pretty wiped out by the time the March birthday is over because of course I like to do lots of craft things for my kids. Special outfits have been a tradition from the time my oldest was wee, and I’ve replaced the birthday crowns I used to sew with cake toppers thanks to my cricut. Just documenting here what I made this year for the kids for posterity. Over the years the outfits have shifted from “what I think is cute” to “what they love to wear” and I love using this tradition to make them each something that feels special and comfortable and uniquely their own. 🎂 Ida’s outfit: @brindilletwig Big Kids t-shirt dress and @megannielsenpatterns #MNMiniVirginia leggings in stretch jersey fabrics from @jumpingjunetextiles 🎂 June’s outfit: Same leggings pattern made with a knit from Joann Fabrics and a RTW tee with a Luisa iron on transfer for my Encanto-obsessed 5 year old (omg the weeding on this nearly did me in and I’d like to thank beginner’s mind for allowing me to think this would be quick and easy). 🎂 Cake toppers: both made using SVG files I found on Etsy with various card stock and other paper material. I’m working on refining my glue skills and enjoying this different kind of making.

Another "first" in my house, with what I'm calling my newly minted first grader's 1st day of school (shift away from the so-called soft start to more active learning) this past Monday. I let her dig through my stash to select her fabrics and choose the patterns she wanted me to make. I mean, to my aesthetic sense there is a LOT going on with her fabric choices together, but she was so happy and remarked several times about how pajama-ish the pants were (high praise from her). /// I used my TNT kid's patterns - a @chalkandnotch #WaterfallRaglan for the top (fabric is a cotton jersey I scored in a destash a few years ago...I think it is a Heather Ross print?) and the @megannielsenpatterns #MNMiniVirginia leggings view A with added cuffs for some extra length (fabric is a cotton jacquard by Albstoffe purchased via Jumping June Textiles). /// As per usual, some meandering thoughts about school this year. No, things have not gone smoothly here. We spent her first live class on hold with tech support for the district, there have been several other "bumps" this week, and of course this is all happening while my partner and I juggle working full-time (yes, i do feel like i'm on a prank show where the punchline is the last gasp of my career). I'm trying hard to approach this experience by suppressing my "let me speak to the manager" energy which I am of course prone to as a white person in this country socialized in a system of white supremacy. What I want Ida to learn this year is compassion, empathy, and patience. That things don't go as planned and we can be resilient and kind. That our community is our first priority - over convenience, over getting what we imagined we were entitled to. That having an attitude that all things should operate according to the rules of a capitalist exchange is in direct opposition to our values. Anyway, these are some half-baked thoughts but that's what I've got for today.

Now that this set of garments has been received by their raffle winner, I'm excited to share this teensy capsule wardrobe I made as a result of participating in the recent @jasforjustice BLM fundraiser! /// My donation was a custom outfit for a child, and after chatting back and forth with the raffle winner we landed on this set of play clothes for her daughter. I used two of my TNT patterns for sewing for kids - the @megannielsenpatterns #MNMiniVirginia leggings and the @chalkandnotch #WaterfallRaglan top made up in some soft knits from my stash. My fabric choices for me tend to be fairly subdued in terms of print, so I just love playing with prints when I sew for children. Bonus: busy prints are GREAT for concealing stains. I'm looking forward to seeing a pic of the lucky kiddo in these clothes once they grow into them. /// I want to thank @little_kotos_closet for organizing and running this fundraiser. I really loved the innovative approach that was taken of having set "suggested donations" for each item rather than the usual model of highest bid = winner and also only allowing folks to enter raffles for 3 items each. /// And finally, after dabbling in custom sewing and selling things I've made, I have to just say that the occasional donation like this (custom outfit for a child) is the only kind of sewing for strangers that I am up for. In my experience, trying to monetize the things I've made has sucked the joy right out of the making for me. But collaborating on some one-of-a-kind clothes for a kid in the name of raising money for a cause that is important to me - that is something I can get behind. @daddydressedmebymg posted about this topic today and I love what he had to say about it. As an aside, if you don't already follow him I really recommend it. His joy and passion for making for his daughter is absolutely wonderful to witness.

Just like the spring blooms, my children have continued growing as normal, even though to me, life feels totally interrupted. June in particular has had a significant growth spurt in the last month. Finally after she told me that her pants made her tummy hurt, I decided to do something about it rather than trying to make do with what we had on hand. /// I've really drifted from sewing primarily for my kids to sewing primarily for myself over the past 6 years, and I'm pretty happy with that. I reserve my sewing for them for special occasions (a birthday outfit, a special toy for Christmas, etc), and try to get all the other clothing they need secondhand. Right now I can't thrift in my usual ways, but I do own a leggings pattern for kids that I really like, and I have a bin of scrap knits and some hoarded stretch jersey I always planned to use but never got around to actually cutting into. /// So over the course of about a week I batch-sewed this set of leggings for her. They mostly don't match any of her other clothes (maybe I should stash solid colors?), but she calls them "mama pants" and they are getting the job done. This process took me way longer than it used to--lots of pausing as I went to stare blankly into the middle distance.
