Church Prom again! So I don't actually make my daughter a new dress for every dance she goes to, but I've been wanting to make this dress for awhile. I fell in love with the fabric last year at Joann's and bought it when it was almost out of stock. I thought it would look good as a Karri Dress from Megan Nielsen Patterns. Even though I made two muslins for the bodice, I ended up with a couple things I wish I had done differently. Still, it fits, she looks gorgeous, and because of the foil pattern, she shines when she walks like a 70's disco dress! 😄 And since I already owned both the pattern and the fabric, I only had to spend money on the rose gold piping. We added the petticoat and I think it's perfect. (It actually didn't look as good without the petticoat because of how the piping makes the seams lay). #mnkarri

My first @megannielsenpatterns #mnkarri (also my first fully lined dress & first princess seams) made only from remnants! Thank goodness I apparently have a very limited colour palette 😂 I made a size L (B101, W87, H107), there is definitely plenty of ease at the waist&bust and so I would be tempted to size down in those areas next time. The #mnkarri isn’t currently in their Curve range (not that I can see although possibly not looking in the right spot!!) so the top size is XL (B107, W86, H112) at the mo. Inspired by @lovetosew.podcast I had a lot of fun using up my bigger scraps - it really makes it a one of a kind project & super satisfying. It was also fun trying princess seams - and there were plenty to practice on (although I actually put together the lining first so any terrible princess seam errors would be hidden!) I have found so far you can wear the dress either way around (as in I’ve worn the deep V and zip at the front), as long as you don’t mind a little bit of bagginess at the back from the front princess seams (personally this doesn’t bother me) and this makes me love it even more! I promise I did iron my lovely checked back lining which looks very crumpled here as I cut these pieces out about a month before sewing them, hence the mildly bedraggled look! Just picked up my amazing swag bag from the sadly cancelled @kwfrocktails, at @spoolandspindle tonight. It was to happen at the end of March, and then postponed to May, and due to Covid-19 cancelled. I moved here in January and was so looking forward to meeting people at this event! 🌟 When Karri met Ellie 🌟 When @sewlike visited Australia in February and happened to make her way to QLD, @elliewhittakerstudio arranged a dinner on the Gold Coast and I jumped at the opportunity to meet Romy and hang out with a bunch of Ellie fabric lovers. It was an utterly fantastic evening (we got the stink eye from the next table and were asked to please keep it down) and we were all kindly gifted some fabric to do with as we wanted. As always, I took way too long making this one up. I had the most eclectic bundle of remnant pieces and my idea was either going to work or fail spectacularly. I settled on the #mnkarri but obviously switched out the sleeves for my favourite #fibremoodjudy And though I tried my hardest not to have any same pieces next to each other, my sense of right and left and back to front is wonky and instead of getting upset at the matching sections I’ve decided to own it. It’s how my brain works and thus this dress is truly a reflection of me. The pattern is superb. All the shaping comes from the beautifully drafted pieces and they come together easily (if slowly and with many pins). I did find the armscye much too tight but that’s a common issue for me 💪 so I cut it all back 1.5cm which also helped the puff sleeves sit better. The dress is fully lined using the back of a doona cover that used to live on my bed and seemingly will never run out. Thank you for trusting me with this collection of goodies. I just realised tonight that I hadn't mentioned I'd written a blog post about my Round 2 entry for the Sewing Bee. It's still linked in my bio, if you want all the details. The challenge was to create a new garment and accessory from second-hand jeans (it was pretty strict - you had to photograph the original jeans). I had one pair of black jeans, but had pretty much donated all my other jeans this year, so ran to the thrift store and picked up another black and two white pairs. I decided to make the @megannielsenpatterns #karridress as it was a pattern I'd had for a while and seemed like a good bet with all the piecing. I also thought it would be fun to take something so utilitarian and try to make something elegant from it. A lot of this challenge was about fit for me and it didn't help when I realised I was out of the pattern sizing- urk. Still, I made a couple of muslins, graded up, made a FBA (or two) and it worked out fine in the end. I kept some of the original jeans details in, like the side seams in the skirt and I used some jeans-style topstitching on the middle section. Repurposing is not something I've done much of to be honest, but I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I was going to. When I was in Otaru, I found this shop that specialised in upcycling kimono. The lady who owned the shop was lovely and helped me find this soft green beauty for the bargain basement price of ¥1000 (about $13 CAD.) . . I want to turn it into a dress for an upcoming wedding and am thinking the @megannielsenpatterns #mnkarri dress, but I am open to suggestions!
