👋 It’s a new make for day 14 of #mmm25 I’m wearing the @megannielsenpatterns flint trousers in a lovely viscose crepe from @sewsewsewuk 🌺 I actually got this fabric to make the maxi version of the Shelby dress but I have decided to make the mini instead, which means I had spare fabric 🙌 I wasn’t planning to make these trousers ( I wasn’t even sure that I liked them 😂) but after wearing my flint shorts last week and realising how much I enjoyed wearing them, I thought I might as well try the trousers too 🌟 I made a size 4 but had to make a few adjustments too ( no surprises there! ) I’m pretty pleased with with the fit and I think these will be perfect for travelling in the summer ☀️ I’m also wearing an old @truebias Rio ringer T-shirt -I probably need to make some new ones soon as mine are all very well worn 😊 🧵 Thoughts 💭 - not entirely convinced these are for me but I know they will be super useful for wearing at the airport! ~ Flint Pants ~ @megannielsenpatterns Hier trage ich die Flint Pants in 7/8-Länge. Ein richtig cooles Schnittmuster finde ich... man würde nicht denken, dass so eine Hose, die so schmal in der Taille anliegt, ohne Reißverschluss auskommt. Hier ist die Bund-/Hosentaschen-Lösung aber so genial gelöst, dass es eben doch ohne RV klappt. Einfach Bund aufklappen und reinsteigen 😁. Dementsprechend schnell und einfach ist die Hose auch genäht (deswegen ist es auch nicht nur bei einer geblieben 😂. Übrigens kann man sie auch in Short- oder Culotte-Länge nähen 😉). Genäht habe ich sie aus einer Bambus-Webware (von @pepelinchen_stoffe ), mit einer etwas gröberen Struktur, die ein bisschen wie Leinen aussieht. I ordered 2m of this #doopsdesigns quilting cotton with the #mnflint trousers in mind. I didn’t allow for the fact that modifying the waistband would leave me slightly short of yardage, but luckily I had left over doops cotton sateen that I could substitute for the facing. This is my second iteration of the flint trousers and I’m still perfecting the fit. Captured at the end of a work day(hence the creases) as I want to wear them a few times to see if any further tweaks are needed before I make my next pair. Started with a size 24 waist and graded down from there. Previous mods are earlier in the grid. I used all the same alterations but this time also added a curved waistband, which has definitely improved the fit for me. A beautiful afternoon to show off my faux leather pants. The petrol colored fabric is from @blackbirdfabrics and the starting point for the pattern is the #mnflintpants I elongated them and added darts at the hem for a bit of a balloon shape. The pockets are lined with a scrap of Liberty cotton lawn. I didn’t want the waistband to “stick” when I wore untucked tops, so I used petersham ribbon for the inside of the waistband. Sewing notes on my pants. So I can remember when I next make them. 🫢 Fabric: @bigandbravefabrics I was gifted this Tencel Linen look in Burgundy, currently on preorder till 26 June, for a strike sew. I love using darker colours for pants for practical reasons. Love the drape and feel of this fabric! Pants: @megannielsenpatterns #mnflintpants. I removed the front pleats of these pants and prefer the cleaner look. Instructions can be found on their blog. Added 20.5inches to my shorts pattern. I didn’t bother piecing together another paper pattern for the pants. Buttons (2nd photo) are from @arrowmountain bought from @fabric.faerie’s preorder some time ago.

Life has been a bit busy recently and I’ve been slack with updating Instagram. Here are a few recent makes, photos taken as I was ironing 😂 1. Another #raetop but the first with the cap sleeves in a lightweight crinkle viscose. 2. A #mossjacket in linen viscose. My first time doing flat felled seams. I really like this pattern and plan to make another in the size down and 3/4 sleeve in hot pink! 3. Another pair of #mnflintpants in a very light and floaty viscose twill. 4. Me wearing the flint pants on a recent work trip to Thailand. They were brilliant in the super hot and humid weather but they’re a nightmare to iron! A couple of firsts recently. 1. I pattern matched! Can you spot the pocket on Nick’s Christmas #wbmtropicalshirt ? 2. I used the roll hem foot on my machine. I altered an old favourite FatFace top to make it short sleeved and rolled the hem of the new sleeves. 3. I made the long version of the #mnflintpants. Christmas Day outfits sorted. Unfortunately I’ve tested positive for Covid today so hopefully I’ll be up for entertaining on Christmas Day 🙄🤧🎄

The number of times people stopped me to complement my #mnflintpants 😍 best feeling. 10/10 would recommend for an easy sew that still looks professional enough for a conference! No zippers! No elastic! I lengthened the pant by 4” to fit my 28” inseam and graded from an 8 at the waist to a 10 at the hips, finished with a blind hem. Something different for the start of the year. I’ve been sewing more and more lately, and having a lot of fun trying new patterns - including this #mnflint pants for Miss 11. She picked the fabric and I am actually really impressed in both the fit and how the fabric worked out. Den hinteren Bund neu machen, doppelt verstärken und mit breitem Gummiband unterlegen 3. Hosenbeine kürzen 4. Testspaziergang machen und neue Fotos machen Diese Palazzoweite hat ein Tragegefühl wie ein Maxirock, das verleiht dem Tag gleichfalls etwas glamouröses. I’m hanging out with Miss G, wearing #mnflintshorts and #mnfloreattop made with fabric from @megannielsenpatterns. The top is silk and the shorts are viscose and both have been printed with the same design. Miss G is wearing #simplicity9531 , a “jiffy” dress and bloomers. The fabric and the pattern came from Bridgette’s grandmother, pattern from the 1980s and fabric perhaps from the 1960s. I thought about her as I was making this one. DIY beach outfit ✂️🪡☀️⛱️ Bikini top Pattern: hacked from the @edgewaterave Brooke one piece. Fabric: Econyl swim fabric and swim lining both from @good_fabric_store Adjustments: I chopped the original swimsuit in half to create a two piece, shortened the top and added ruching to the centre front. I made my perfect pair of shorts!!! The Flint shorts again but this time with the button front and in a straight size 12. I made them up in a stretch denim kindly gifted by my friend @ckhastie and I lined the pockets with Cornish tartan. I LOVE THEM! Oh and I learnt how to attach the buttons using my machine (so much easier!) I also whipped up another t-shirt in ecovero fabric. Do you start with patterns or fabric when designing your me-mades? Or a vague idea in the back of your mind? I normally start with fabric, but this shorts set was inspired by seeing the textiles designed by Andy Warhol at @dovecotstudios in May. The last photo shows the inspo picture, and although I really wanted to buy new fabric, I also wasn't sure if/how it'd work out (and if I'd wear it at all). I also didn't want to purchase any new patterns, so the pattern hacking commenced! There's been a few issues with this set, and I've been working on it on and off for about a month. At one point, I considered not finishing it at all. Read (or skip) to the end to see why 😆. Shorts - these are the #mnflint from @megannielsenpatterns. I've made these before, but they've tended to come out too big, so i sized down, which has overall given a better fit, but possibly now a little too snug! In terms of #patternhacking, I took a lot of the volume out of the sides so they're much straighter, added a turn up, and shortened them quite a lot. Shirt - #sewinglyra from @tillybuttons. I made it sleeveless and bound the armholes. I added about 10cm in length and created a channel and drawstring at the bottom. Next time, I'd add extra length as I had to attach the channel separately. I also had to completely unpick the collar as I just couldn't get it to fit the bodice top. My initial interfacing was too stiff, so I also had to replace it all (after it'd been ironed and sewn). So, the major issue that almost made me not finish...well, I had 2 metres of this William Morris cotton poplin and used just about every scrap of it. The pattern was directional so I carefully placed all the pieces to make sure they were all in the same orientation. Unfortunately, I later realised that I'd placed them all upside down 😆. Shorts weather. I actually don’t own ANY shorts, my darling daughter having stolen both pairs I had. With the weather being on the hot side recently it was time to make some more. ☀️🩳 Pattern: #mnflintshorts by @megannielsenpatterns Fabric: Cotton duck from a destash event. Sizing: Size 8 (current measurement W27.5” H37.5”) This means I sized down about half a size. After doing some quick research I thought it was going to be fine, especially after my fabric grows a bit. Mods: turned up hem 4cm instead of 5cm. Took a long horizontal wedge out of the main back pieces, just under the waistband. There was a weird bit of excess there. The piece I took out was about an inch at centre back, grading to nothing at the side seams. I’m not that familiar with adjustments, but maybe it’s like a cheat’s flat seat adjustment?! Anyway it’s better now so that’s the main thing! I also put my buttons on the inside for a super clean look. General thoughts: I REALLY like the vibe of these. It’s easy to see why this pattern is so popular. I saw lots of these around when I first got onto sewing socials a few years ago, and the hype seems to have waned somewhat. I guess everyone got really into elastic during the pandemic. 😆 Pros: 👍smart crisp look with the pleats, darts and waistband. 👍 no fussy zips or welt pockets (but you could add!) 👍 super hackable (I’m thinking about making a Flint skirt, what do ya reckon?!) 👍adjustable — you could move buttons if needed Cons: 👎 one pocket is not fully enclosed…if you are left handed you may want to have the opening on the right side 👎 not sooo much ease as other patterns esp elastic waist ones (but I did sort of size down so maybe that’s my bad) 👎actually no other cons. I recently made the @maisonfauve #tildablouse 💖 It was my first foray into pin tucks and while they could be neater, they aren’t bad considering how flimsy the fabric I was working with was. Made in a very light viscose-linen blend that I got at the @stoffenbeurs a while back. Flint shorts! I needed some shorts and saw this beautiful fabric so I was inspired! The options of the pattern included ties or buttons as closures, but I saw some adaptations with D rings and was I love! So I used them too 🤩 I gabled a bit, since I'm always struggling with making fitting pants. Looking at the size range I thought, let's just do a straight size 12. It already fit quite nicely, but I had too much room in the waist (as expected) so I took 0.5 cm out of the back pleats and 0.5 cm out of the front seam. So in total 3 cm less, it's still not snug, but snug enough. I'm happy with it now, and I think I won't grade down my patternpiece, but just make the darts bigger, so if I ever need to let it out again I can. I also tried out some embroidery stitches with my new machine and I adore these little embellishments! Pattern: #mnflintshorts by @megannielsenpatterns Fabric: cotton denim from @vanschiestoffen (where I also got the D-rings) Lining was a cotton satin from my stash. I'm feeling a bit adventurous now, I might just make a straight size 12 dawn jeans to instead of altering my 5th pattern revision and see if I can do some simple grading at the center and back seams to get to the waist size I need 🫢

Recycling and using up scraps this week. I turned a dress I made but didn’t wear (2nd photo) into some shorts and whipped up a quick t-shirt from some leftover ponte. I love the shorts pattern. According to the size chart my waist was a size up from my hips. So I graded the pattern out to a 14 at the waist and 12 for the rest. The waist is too big! #memademay day 19 I finished these shorts this morning, they just needed hemming and a press stud adding, which took about 15 minutes. I started them a year ago 🙄 I used some linen remnants from my assembly line cuff dress. The pattern is the @megannielsenpatterns #mnflint and it’s the first time I’ve made them. They are actually about 3 inches too big at the waist, so I need to make some flat pattern alterations before my next version. Visited Philly over the long weekend! 🤩 The weather was incredibly warm and as I was planning what to pack, I realized I don’t have many casual tops in my wardrobe. I made a wearable toile of these cute shorts today, and I’m pretty pleased with them! I used a cheap chambray fabric which creases & frays like a good ‘un ( as per close up of button holes 🙊) but I’m always a bit reluctant to use my best material for trouser patterns as they inevitably don’t fit me!! My Flint shorts saga!! I made a straight size 14 toile of the Flint shorts in March 2023. They were too big so I cut a straight size 12 and started again in April 2023 as I'd seen so many cute versions on IG. Once finished, I was unhappy with the straight waistband as it wasn't hugging my body at the top (curved waistbands sit much better on me) and there was bunching in the front crotch area. (Pre-mod pics are the last 3) so they sat on the floor of my sewing room for 6 months until I had the headspace to unpick and raise the center back seam by 2cm, tapering to 0cm at the side seams and drafting a curved waist band with the ties, etc... After sewing the waistband and attaching it, I realised I'd added the ties to the wrong sections so they were removed 😂 I've tried shortening the back crotch curve a bit more but then the center seam makes my butt look perpetually hungry, I've tried taking a strip of fabric out of the back piece but not the front from the crotch to the hem and I've tried an unconventional angled strip. After all this faffing about, the waistband fits my body MUCH better (✅) but I'm not sure if I've made the front bunching any better and in some photos, I actually think it might be worse. (❌) The stubborn side of me who wants to nail pants would like advice and the frustrated side of me is over these shorts. Please send thoughts and advice 😊❤️ I will absolutely acknowledge that the drafting by Megan Nielsen is amazing, the style is super chic and I found all the notches, etc... lined up perfectly which doesn't always happen with other designers.
