I modified the back yoke of the #mndawnjeans #mndawncurvejeans #mndawncurve so that the center back at the waist would have a right angle. This is one of the things that can cause the backs to dip down and the waistband to flare out at the top edge. #patternmaking #technicaldesign #wzrdreamsjeans

How can it be the end of May already?! I'm thrilled to be able to celebrate a gorgeous day while wearing this airy hacked sleeveless #harmonyblouse I finished last night, but even more delighted to have made some progress this month on one of my big hopes & dreams for #memademay2020... figuring out a swayback adjustment to remove that insane fabric puddling on (what was supposed to be) a simple woven top. Eternal thanks to @minimalistmachinist for referencing in her stories a "Sewing with Nancy" episode on PBS (Solving the Pattern Fitting Puzzle-Part 2). Nancy demonstrates a pivot & slide technique where fabric is actually removed from the neck/shoulders. I finally gave it a go & you can see I did a pretty significant adjustment but it really has made a huge improvement from the initial blue blouse that had me crying figurative, if not literal tears. Last but not least, I'm happy to be slowly figuring out how to dye my toenails with all organic henna... the same homemade paste I use to keep the grey hair at bay 😁 I love being able to have tinted nails all the time but with zero chemical harm. I started experimenting with self henna pedis last October & am slowly picking up tips & tricks along the way as I redye new nail growth every 6 weeks or so. Too fun to be able to fit this little red top out of a remnant of #thriftedfabric I snatched up for exactly $1 right before quarantine hit 😁 Also loving my now 6 month old initial pair of #mndawncurvejeans more every day as the rigid denim continues to soften... especially since I took a risk intentionally shrinking them in the dryer for a few minutes in prep for #memademay. Prior to a little shrinking, they just bagged out too much after washing. Now I have to work super hard to get the zip up after washing & can barely move for the first hour... but luckily, they soon relax into perfection. My denim is obviously no longer "raw" but I will continue to squeeze in as many wears between laundering as I deem socially acceptable😂 #memademay2020plus #imnot2d #mndawnjeans

I did it! I made a pair of jeans 😱🥳Biggest sewing challenge so far. . . I had had jeans on my sewing wishlist but had put them in the scary too hard basket until @nuno_studio and @marjorie_olliva put out a call that they were setting up a jeans sewing support group and it was the push I needed. I used 12oz denim from @wearethefabricstore and started with the straight leg #mndawnjeans @megannielsenpatterns but I ended up taking in the legs quite a bit until I was happy with them, so it’s kind of a halfway between the straight and tapered leg. . . If you saw some of my stories in the last 3 weeks, these have been a big challenge! I don’t think I would’ve finished if it wasn’t for the support group (thanks ladies!). My first #rawdenim experiment has outlasted my expectations so far... I'm a good month in with zero washes (I have misted twice with the vinegar/water spray I use to clean practically everything else in my house 😁)I know they say that freezing jeans to kill bacteria is an urban legend, but this subzero Canadian snow weather has got to do *something* to the cooties. Dawn Jeans ultimate punk. . . . I know I'm preaching to the choir when I say that sometimes I feel like being fat/plus size is the ultimate finger to traditionalism in modern social normativism. So when I got an invite to an 80s themed birthday party I knew it had to be ULTIMATE.PUNK. . . I spent several days looking for 80s photos of plus sized women's fashion and only found ONE (!!) but she was amazing. I made jeans yesterday. I did beautiful topstitching. And I can't button the waist by a good four inches. 😭 I followed the instructions for grading from the Megan Nielsen blog to grade from an 18 waist to a 26 hip based on my measurements. The instructions had me keep the rise of the 18, which is what I think is a major source of the fit issue. These are meant to be high rise and they are most definitely not so the waist falls at the same level as my hip bones rather than my waist. Have you successfully graded a pair of Dawn jeans? I've been slowly plugging along on my @megannielsenpatterns Dawn Jeans muslin. I have only been working at it in small chunks of time because I need mental breaks to prevent me from getting overwhelmed by how to fit it. 👖 This the "straight leg" in size 24 with all sorts of adjustments (mainly dealing with increasing the hook length more than 2 inches, and the subsequent inseam changes it caused). I think I am going to have to call this good enough at this point. I find well fitted through the waist and hips, and relaxed through the thighs, which is what I was hoping for. This is not for stretch denim so any other reduction of the ease through the thighs would be uncomfortable. I will be transferring my adjustments from the muslin to the pattern and then figuring out how it all affects the waistband. Here’s a second new blouse for the #sewaprilblouse25 challenge run by @cloth_edit and @sewn_on_the_tyne . Besides for being black, this one is out of my usual style comfort zone. This is the @patternscout #pspoppyblouse made in a polyester black chiffon that I’ve had in my stash forever. I used the eyelet border for the sleeve and bottom hems (swipe to see untucked) and added some of it into the shoulder seams as well. I also removed the collar on the pattern. I’m honestly not sure how much wear this will get since I don’t like wearing polyester but it was a fun experiment! It will be nice to have a romantic fancy blouse in case I want to mix up my usual style. Worn with straight leg #mndawnjeans in a dark green canvas. Holiday party top! 🥂 The Pattern: @closetcorepatterns #sophieswimsuit converted to a top, with cup pieces from the @orange_lingerie #boylstonbra swapped in; I like the ratio of upper to lower cup better, and they fit well into the pattern, with a bit of tweaking to line things up The Fabric: Crushed stretch velvet from @emeralderinsews, where I also got most of the findings and powernet/powermesh for the lining. Thoughts: I really wanted a fun party top that could be layered with a blazer or cardigan, so I remade this swimsuit/top in a lovely velvet, mostly following the same steps as before. Sewing with velvet for the first time was…not my favorite…BUT not as horrific as I expected! I do prefer the Boylston cup shaping and support to the first version of this, and would probably use those pattern pieces again in the future. I am absolutely in love with this top. I  went on a thrifting adventure to almost all the shops in town last Friday and really lucked out at one shop. I got the 2 reference patterns and both gingham fabrics all at the first stop of the day and now a week later I have the statement top I never knew I needed. When I found the fabric and patterns I knew I needed to make my own Ganni inspired blouse since this pattern is basically just a 1990's version of their iconic peter pan blouse. For my  version I used @simplicity_creative_group #S8620 for the body and collar and #S9857 for the sleeve. I made a few adjustments to the pattern (some details are saved in my highlight for this project and more will come in a blog post soon!) but overall kept to the base pattern. The biggest change was adding the ruffle to the collar and switching the sleeve out for a more traditional pleated sleeve rather than the gathered sleeve on the #S8620 pattern. Oh heyyyyy. It's been a while, but I'm happy to report that despite the fact that I haven't posted in a while, I've been (slowly) sewing. I recent finished these two wardrobe basics - wide legged #mndawnjeans and The Modern Sewing Co. #msboatnecktop. This is my third pair of dawn jeans, and I made these up in straight 14. Fun facts: I sewed the jeans zipper facing the wrong direction and I would have had to unpick too much so now I just have to reach inside my pants to pull it up 😂. I also wore these for three weeks before I installed the button - I just used a safety pin, HA! I will likely unpick the hem and make them an inch longer. This is the first time I have sewed a @modern_sewing_co and I really loved it. I made a size too big, but I've been wearing this non stop. I also finished this quickly to bring on a trip, and so didn't top stitch the facing and haven't hemmed the body or the sleeves, and I may not! The next time I make this I'll lengthen the body by 2-3" because I like to tuck my shirts in and this is almost too short for that. It would also be very cute shortened by an inch or so for a more cropped look. Here's a question for those of you who have sergers - do you use jersey needles when you are overlocking knits? I may just need to change my needles, but my serger made tiny holes in some of the seams. Okeee, happy baby Friday! 😘

Worn with a thrifted scarf 🧣 and my blundies 🥾 ⚫️ 📐Pattern: • #pennyraglan tee by @grainlinestudio • #mndawnjeans by @megannielsenpatterns in the skinny version 👖 ✂️Fabric: • black #hemp knit from @blackbirdfabrics 🖤 • black stretch (98%cotton2%spandex) (8-10oz I forget 🧐) denim from @kingtextiles ⬛️ 🧵Mods: • size 0 in the raglan, no additional mods • size 10waist graded to 6hips in the dawns (should now be 10w8h) • 1/2” swayback adjustment (it was too much. Switched to 3/8”) • took the legs in at the calf a bit more during the outer seam basting step • frayed hem What I learned 🤔 • used @ritdye dye fixative in a boiling pot to cure the denim bleeds. SHOULD have done this to the entire 2m of fabric. I think this step shrunk an already snug fit 😬 I think it helped the colour though! (I did prewash in warm before sewing) • I need a lighter weighted stretch denim for skinnies. I’m thinking a 6oz would be better than what I used. These are more so *standing concert* pants than sitting pants. 🎶😅 • black is the goat 👑

MMM Days 19 & 20! I've been wearin' the me mades and sometimes I document and still don't post. Why? Oh I don't know! But today I'm wearing a #fairfieldshirt by @threadtheorydesigns that I made for my husband. It's liberty fabric - tiny colored pencils! Yesterday I busted out this @ensemble.patterns #perkinsshirt that started out as a dress. I didn't like the way it hung on me so I cut it off. I historically do not wear this shirt at all, but it might make it into regular rotation. Both days are #mndawnjeans! 🌊 : #memademay2025 #mmm2025

Finally finished my first pair of jeans!! 👖 I learned so much from these, and they are far from perfect.. But I am still so happy that I made them! 😁 I used the Dawn Jeans pattern, and I've already got a plan for the next pair of these. I'll put up some more thorough notes over on @threadloop.app soon, but some quick notes here for now: - I mucked around with TDCO sizing adjustments: I added height and took height away, added width and took width away (very much still learning that method, but I love the principles). I had also cut a size 10 hip and 12 waist, but next time, I will just cut a straight size 10 and add 5/8" height to both front and back. - I cut the waistband a few cm's longer, which was handy, because I needed the extra length for the fly extension. - I also used a longer zip and lowered the fly, which I will not do next time lol 🙄 - Used a really heavy rigid denim, which is actually breaking in ok, but I'll try something a little lighter next time. - I also placed the button hole in a weird place (aligning it too much with the zipper), but next time will center it better on the fly. - Made the straight leg view which looked terribly daggy on me, and ended up tapering the lower leg. Next time, just cut the tapered leg view. The pattern instructions were great, and I found the zip fly add-on super easy to sew. I also think the back pockets are great for my shape, and I had fun with the top stitching on them and everywhere else 😊 Yay, jeans!! #mndawn #mndawnjeans

The wildflowers are starting to bloom and I’m just two teacher work days away from summer! 🌸🌻 I made @summerhaus_ #thecaroltop in this linen blend seersucker I had a yard of from @linenlab.co.kr and it makes for a good summer top! I was in between the 0 and 2 but with a 2, no mods. The armhole is a bit big for me, but I couldn’t alter and disrupt my French seams!! So I don’t mind it too much. What I needed was black jeans with a comfy fit and a saturday with zero plans to make them. I didn't get lost in the details, did’nt aim for perfection, I just wanted a simple yet beautiful pair of jeans. I believe that clothes should fit the body and not the other way round. My black Dawn Jeans that I made 4 years ago are now a little bit tight, especially on bloated days. Compared to my other pants, I'm still convinced that they have shrunk a bit over the last few years. And since I just threaded black yarn in my serger, it was the perfect opportunity to sew a new pair. Oh just my favorite pair of jeans ever here - they instantly make me feel fancy and elevated. I don’t normally gravitate towards a lot of prints on my pants, but somehow denim is a neutral no matter how many shades of blue it holds. So there you go: a fancy basic for my closet. This was the make that made me realize that I have a longer than average torso because when I raised the waist by a few inches, it suddenly felt like proper high rise pants that I’ve been pining over for years. I made this shirt when Malena and I took a dreamy long weekend trip to sew our hearts out in San Luis Obispo, where her dear friends generously let us stay in their back house! Happy #memademay guys! It feels like sewing for me properly started in May 2020, the support from sewing community then really encouraged me to share my (often somewhat dodgy) self makes and inspired me to keep sewing. I can’t believe it’s been five years already - time flies at a scary pace these days - but I do like looking back at how I’ve progressed. Anyway this is a double #mmootd the jeans are the #megannielsenpatterns #mndawnjeans view B size 8 modified for a zip fly (this is very easy, there’s a tutorial on their website for the ash jeans and the process is exactly the same you just end up with a spare piece). I do think there are some little adjustments I would make next time to get a closer fit but they’re very comfy and the pattern wasn’t too challenging. Having somewhat of a pants crisis right now - many of my handmade pants have worn out and I’m mostly wearing store bought Levis which are fine I guess but I would like to sew some more pants with a more modern silhouette - however as a short torso/long limbed body type not all pants look proportional - wide leg full length pants for example just look like a giant wall of fabric to me. Remake d'un jeans Bonobo complètement HS. J'ai utilisé le patron #mndawnjeans de @meganielsenpatterns que j'adore et que je reprends régulièrement. Avec quelques modifications pour coller au modèle Bonobo, notamment la poche pour la monnaie fermée par une fermeture à glissière passepoilée. Dawn jeans ✨️ I did it! Jeans that fit! So happy 😊 Of course, there are still some draglines, but it's a good start! So this has been a process of years (with breaks in between), but I thought after making the flint shorts, maybe I'm overthinking this. So, instead of grading everything smoothly, I slashed from size 12 to 8 from where the zipper and the yoke started, and this worked so much better! I did use my slowly perfected waistband in size 8 since that had fit fine before. I'm really happy with this fit, and they're absolutely wearable and look awesome. #memademay2025 day 7 I’m so proud of myself for making it 7 days! I’ve made a bunch of versions of this Ashton top as I’m a bit of a perfectionist. This is still not perfect but my best fit yet. #memademay2025 - day 6: Today I wore my work uniform and changed to go out with my family. The weather has been really warm and dry, unusual for us. I think this top is too small but I wear it a lot. These are my dawn jeans again, I wear them almost every day. I treated myself to a @kylieandthemachine advent calendar this past Christmas and am now spoiled for fun label choices. #memademay2025 day 2 - this top gets tons of wear, I’m surprised I’ve only made one. These jeans are my first straight leg view of the Dawn jeans. I miscalculated what length I need and I feel like they are a touch too short so I’ve been turning them up. I have another big piece of light denim that I want to make Dawn jeans out of. I couldn’t decide between the straight and wide legged views. I think now that I’ve made both I want more wide legged pants. I don't want to spend unnecessary money, but I've been thinking recently about buying the Daughter Judy worship jeans pattern because I've heard people rave about them, and I've seen comparisons of those and other jeans patterns. #memademay2025 Day 30 I've been trying to go through as much of May as possible without repeating. Just to force myself to reach for things that don't get as much wear. I've gotton better over the years at making more basic things that I know I'll reach for. I'm surprised that I've only just gotton around to posting these workhorse pieces. The Dawn Jeans. I made these jeans years ago. I wear them all the time. I’ve made multiple versions of this pattern in different fabrics. I cannot recommend the pattern enough. I use this pattern for the jeans master class I teach once a year @izzosewstudio and it’s just a really solid pattern that is a great starting point.
