I made this as part of my last minute camping road trip and knew instinctively it would fit my vibe of comfy, casual, practical, and stylish. And it’s a winner! It withstood 38 degrees C in full sun at a music concert and didn’t inhibit my ability to start a campfire. SCORE. As with many of my makes, at first I wasn’t so sure. My waist measurement put me into a size 14 and my hips at a size 10. I decided to split the difference and made a straight 12. When I first tried it on it felt big. I think I could have done a straight 10 as the waist size would have accommodated a larger elastic length without any modifications. In the end though it’s been perfect for traveling as it is comfortable for long stints sitting in the car or sweating in big heat. I love the pocket placement and while the pockets are on the small size, they are perfect for my hands and can carry my iPhone in a pinch. I feel like I may strut when I wear this as I love the swish of my skirt around my body. Now that I’ve been wearing it I would prefer to shorten it between the hips and waist as I seem to want to flip it over a turn at the waist (I’m quite short waisted). This is not cut on the bias, but it is cut in 6 panels (front, back, sides) and that helps give it the same kind of feel as a bias cut skirt. All those pieces do chop up a printed design and it wouldn't work well for a large print. Small prints and solids would work best. Suggested fabric is a rayon and I can see why.... might work in a linen but one with lots of drape and movement. I thought this would be quick and easy, but that's only the case if you skip the pockets and split front. I was going to make the #mnwattleskirt and thought that might take longer so did this instead. I think I will do that one next and compare the results. A wearable muslin! 🌸 🎉 If you’ve been following my stories (and there’s a highlight), I’ve been looking for a sailor collar shirt/dress pattern. With the boxy front bib. No contemporary patterns were forthcoming (if only I’d had more patience!), so I decided to see what I could hack myself. I took the bonus sailor collar from the #anningdress from @marillawalker , flipped it around, and got to work. Lots of lots of lots of mods and two muslins later, we arrived at this wearable proof of concept. I think the bib is just the right proportion for my body. I ended up making a three piece collar to introduce shoulder shaping. I’m still not sure I’m happy with the back collar, but I think the general form is there. I did a continuous lapped placket for the back opening, and a bias bound hem. The top is made with delicious cotton voile from @neridahansenfabrics that I only had about a meter of. It’s a scrappy masterpiece. 😂 paired with my #mnwattleskirt from @megannielsenpatterns in delicious linen gingham from @wearethefabricstore At least one more version to perfect before I dive into my precious linen and antique lace. The gift in this make is twofold. The first is that I was able to rekindled my passion for sewing and make something start to (close-to) finish in a single, uninterrupted sewing session. On top of that, I only had to rip out one seam (when I sewed the two back pieces together via the side seams instead of the back seam - my traced pattern piece was not clear at all on what was what). This make had my first, 100% successful stitch in the ditch approach to securing the folded waistband in place. It is chef’s kiss. Go ahead, zoom in and check it out! I was so invigorated by my afternoon/evening of sewing that I wasn’t even sad when I put this on and HATED IT. Which brings me to the second gift. Sewing clothes is a bit tricky in that you can see a pattern, love it but not realize until you finish making it, and try it on, that the design really isn’t for you. This is the second full skirt I have made recently and I can now conclusively say that on my square, short-torso, this look is not for me. Having said that, this skirt is actually gorgeous and I will not be binning it. On someone else this will be well loved and so I will leave this as a UFO until I can re-home the garment and then make the necessary adjustments so it will fit the new owner. I’m at peace with what I would normally construe a sewing fail, mainly because I don’t think it’s a fail at all. The end result isn’t what I was expecting and that’s okay. Hot off the sewing machine this afternoon! This is the @megannielsenpatterns #wattleskirt which I’ve made in some fine striped linen from @merchantandmills. This is a bias cut skirt, but there are four versions, so excellent value for money! It fastens either with buttons or a tie at the waist, so an easy make for someone who prefers not to sew buttonholes or zips. The best bit for me are the large pockets! They are fabulous. It took a while to make this only because as it’s cut on the bias you have to let the skirt hang for a while to ‘drop’. Then I had to get a friend to pin the hemline (other methods are available!) and once I’d cut the levelled hem I left it to hang again, just in case it were to have more ‘droppage’. I used linen bias tape from @raystitch to hem this and once it’s washed and settles further the hem will soften more. My outfit today. I sewed this last year but these pieces are still on regular rotation so definitely a rewarding sew! The t-shirt is a bamboo jersey (Saffron colour) and the #mnwattleskirt is made with a checkered linen (all fabrics and pattern are in stock)

At the end of autumn I decided to make a bias cut elastic waist skirt with pockets. So I turned to the #lesperlinespatterns #resominiskirt #freesewingpattern as the base. Pockets were modified from the #mnwattleskirt and about 20cm were added to the longest pattern length. I slimmed down the A-line and widened the elastic and added a drawstring. The blue version was the toile and I didn’t cut the front properly on the bias. To avoid this mistake I cut out the mauve one on the floor. The blue fabric is a lightweight linen cotton from @material_happiness and the mauve is a linen bedsheet. The 2nd piece in the mauve set is an #archershirt combined with an #ashtontop made from a pillowcase. The blue top is a #melodydolman with a hand knit cardi. Still catching up and posting some makes from 2023! I think I finished this skirt back in November and it was a fun sew! I used an Art Gallery Fabrics Rayon Challis. Rayon Challis is a really difficult and shifty fabric, but after I had all the pieces cut out the pattern was easy to follow. I used Megan Nielsen Wattle Skirt, view D, and omitted the front/back seams. Love a good bias cut skirt. 🩷 It just took a bit longer to finish because I had it hang on my dress form for a few days for the fabric to stretch out before hemming. First bias skirt is View A of #wattleskirt / #mnwattleskirt in a thrifted cotton from @themakersplacehunterregion Due to lack of fabric the back was cut in 1 piece and the length was reduced by about 5cm. Both of these were happy adjustments that will be brought forward to the next version. The front seam creates an inward fold that to me detracts from the garment. The buttons were a fun purchase from 1 of 2 creative reuse shops in San Diego. This is the last of these skirts to have a straight waistband - I’ve already changed the pattern and made V2. But this skirt will still get plenty of wear with the versatile colour and shape. First time out of the house for a final make of 2023 and first make of 2024 #blommatank and #mnwattleskirt with a RTW cardi to make it work appropriate. Size 12 view C of Wattle with a couple extra cm in length and slightly shorter ties in a sale gingham cotton poplin from @pitttrading Blomma is a size C and a bit too snug so have recut in the next size up. The fairly thick cotton Lycra is thrifted from @themakersplacehunterregion - a good fabric for learning the blomma binding technique but not forgiving for size. I plan to make more of each of these. I ❤️ the side pocket opening of the Wattle (and Flint) and that view A and C suit different types of fabrics and produce distinct finished products. And Blomma is an excellent close-fitting underlayer to span the seasons. So the year is off to a productive and positive start. A few months ago 🤭 I made my first #mnwattle skirt designed by @megannielsenpatterns (view C). I decided to leave out the tie because I don't normally like it that much. For the first version I also left the pockets behind so that I could easily make the skirt a size smaller and therefor I needed to placed a blind zipper instead (it was my first one yeahhhh). I wasn't too sure about the fit because of the wrinkles. I tried to put on some (bought) shirts that I already had in my closet, but I didn't like the combinations. So I decided to just hang it in my closet for now and make a trial version of version A (without the wrinkles). And I liked this one a lot more on me. But before I start making the real version, the question is "what should I wear on it?" Now after a few months I still have nothing nice in my closet. 🙈🤭 So the search for a nice shirt/top is still going on .....
