I did it! I made a pair of jeans 😱🥳Biggest sewing challenge so far. . . I had had jeans on my sewing wishlist but had put them in the scary too hard basket until @nuno_studio and @marjorie_olliva put out a call that they were setting up a jeans sewing support group and it was the push I needed. I used 12oz denim from @wearethefabricstore and started with the straight leg #mndawnjeans @megannielsenpatterns but I ended up taking in the legs quite a bit until I was happy with them, so it’s kind of a halfway between the straight and tapered leg. . . If you saw some of my stories in the last 3 weeks, these have been a big challenge! I don’t think I would’ve finished if it wasn’t for the support group (thanks ladies!). I MADE TROUSERS! After #DawnGate and days of pattern surgery, I wanted an easy win. And ta da! My @untitledthoughts #UTChandlerPants! Made in a day. I made the pleated "pants" size H (the biggest) and added two inches to the inseam and an inch to the rise and they fit really well. I actually compare them to my @winmichele L ruler to get the rise right, it's a useful tool. The fabric is a charcoal grey cupro twill from @rainbowfabrickilburn, I got 3m a while ago at full price (like £7/m) and then in their remnant sale for another 2m for £4! Dawn Jeans ultimate punk. . . . I know I'm preaching to the choir when I say that sometimes I feel like being fat/plus size is the ultimate finger to traditionalism in modern social normativism. So when I got an invite to an 80s themed birthday party I knew it had to be ULTIMATE.PUNK. . . I spent several days looking for 80s photos of plus sized women's fashion and only found ONE (!!) but she was amazing. I made jeans yesterday. I did beautiful topstitching. And I can't button the waist by a good four inches. 😭 I followed the instructions for grading from the Megan Nielsen blog to grade from an 18 waist to a 26 hip based on my measurements. The instructions had me keep the rise of the 18, which is what I think is a major source of the fit issue. These are meant to be high rise and they are most definitely not so the waist falls at the same level as my hip bones rather than my waist. Have you successfully graded a pair of Dawn jeans? I've been slowly plugging along on my @megannielsenpatterns Dawn Jeans muslin. I have only been working at it in small chunks of time because I need mental breaks to prevent me from getting overwhelmed by how to fit it. 👖 This the "straight leg" in size 24 with all sorts of adjustments (mainly dealing with increasing the hook length more than 2 inches, and the subsequent inseam changes it caused). I think I am going to have to call this good enough at this point. I find well fitted through the waist and hips, and relaxed through the thighs, which is what I was hoping for. This is not for stretch denim so any other reduction of the ease through the thighs would be uncomfortable. I will be transferring my adjustments from the muslin to the pattern and then figuring out how it all affects the waistband. I didn't let this beautiful rainbow check (does this count as check?) Fall into the depths of the stash. I'm not generally one for checks, but this one stole my heart and I knew it needed to be a little summer top, which I plan to wear year round with a cardigan too. This is officially #seamworknatalie (thanks @ali.g.vaughan) with less ease than designed and slightly cropped length. I also left the sleeves off and reshaped the armscye, and added a bias cut yoke that also took in some of the front shoulder (because I couldn't easily fit front and back pieces on my fabric, but I could if I made both shorter 🤣 but then I ended up cutting 3" off the length when I hemmed it, so...). I was hoping that moving the shoulder seam forward would also play with the check directions a bit, but that totally didn't happen. Ah well, live and learn. Anyway, I finished it just in time for Autumn, and for Perth to get a month's worth of rain in a day... But it'll be back to blue skies soon and it'll get worn often. These are my #MNDawn #mndawncurve #mndawnplus that I've been working on. I tried too much with these. First straight leg. First trying to get rid of the yoke. I can release a little in the inseam and they will stretch with wear. I may add back in a small yoke :( they are comfy. This fabric was $2.97/yd at @gstreetfabrics so I went for it. No regrets. These will be worn.

I modified the back yoke of the #mndawnjeans #mndawncurvejeans #mndawncurve so that the center back at the waist would have a right angle. This is one of the things that can cause the backs to dip down and the waistband to flare out at the top edge. #patternmaking #technicaldesign #wzrdreamsjeans

I think it'll take a little longer but the impending deadline of Christmas will help me get my sewjo back. I have a habit of relishing a challenge and a deadline. Slow and steady is not my usual pace. I'm trying to be intentional with my sewing, all these planned pieces will be wardrobe stalwarts so I'm not too concerned if I make them in a few months rather than now. That's what part of building a sustainable wardrobe means to me. The process is as a much part of that sustainability as the fabric choices, the fabric shops and the pattern companies I choose to support. TL;DR I'm learning to embrace the slower pace of sustainability.

I can't even begin to describe how victorious I feel having successfully finished making a pair of jeans! I've tried to fit jeans patterns on and off over the years. I've usually given up in a fit of disgust and frustration. I'm not sure what makes this time different. The availability of more plus sized jeans options doesn't hurt. Having all sorts of positive feelings about myself and my body from my experience strength-training these last few years also doesn't. I also have a little more mental resilience from learning to embrace the process of learning new skills. What ever it is. I did it! I learned so much about jeans fitting, and construction. I have a lovely and wearable pair of jeans as the weather turns colder. I look forward to continuing to learn more!! // It pairs so nicely with the @helens__closet #lunatank // Pattern: @megannielsenpatterns Dawn Curve Jeans #mndawncurve // Fabric: 12oz non-stretch denim from Fabric.com // Project Notes: *My measurements are W39"H50" which puts me in a size 22 but I found the size 22 to be too tight when I was muslining. I sized up to a 24 for this project, but then I took in quite a bit on the side seams when I was sewing the final version. It probably would have been better to use a size 22. The denim does have more give than the sheets I was using for muslins. *I used @winmichele 's crotch curve measurement tutorials to measure myself and decided I needed to add to the hook length. I added 1.75" to the hook length. * I removed significant width from CB, BW/Yoke, and a smidge from the front. This was expected as my back waist is usually smaller than any RTW or indie patterns. *I trimmed off 1-1.5" on the outseam . *I am 5'10" and I didn't need to add any length to the pant leg when cutting to the "long" length or to the crotch depth. *As I have worn these pants for the last couple of days I've decided the front zipper is too long. I wish I had reduced the crotch depth there. I am not sure I will use this pattern again as adjusted, but I think I may take the wide leg version and try to adjust them based on what I have learned. *More details about the process of fitting and construction can be found in my highlights.

Be braving and posting these to my grid so I can properly note the improvements. These are made up in a much lighter weight calico than the denim I'm gonna use so they seem to fit reasonably well with some obvious excepts. Photo 1 - Green line is my actual hip and purple is where I want my high-waisted jeans to sit, measurement says I need 5" adding, and I reckon I'll need to take a chunk out of the back at the yoke and waist once I get there. Photo 2 - wrinkly knees! Is this going to be inevitable when using non-stretch denim on tapered jeans? Photo 3 - My butt. Does this need "scooping out"? It's incredibly hard to take photos of your back! Any suggestions for fitting hugely appreciated! I'll definitely need to make a second toile with such a increase to the body. How can it be the end of May already?! I'm thrilled to be able to celebrate a gorgeous day while wearing this airy hacked sleeveless #harmonyblouse I finished last night, but even more delighted to have made some progress this month on one of my big hopes & dreams for #memademay2020... figuring out a swayback adjustment to remove that insane fabric puddling on (what was supposed to be) a simple woven top. Eternal thanks to @minimalistmachinist for referencing in her stories a "Sewing with Nancy" episode on PBS (Solving the Pattern Fitting Puzzle-Part 2). Nancy demonstrates a pivot & slide technique where fabric is actually removed from the neck/shoulders. I finally gave it a go & you can see I did a pretty significant adjustment but it really has made a huge improvement from the initial blue blouse that had me crying figurative, if not literal tears. Last but not least, I'm happy to be slowly figuring out how to dye my toenails with all organic henna... the same homemade paste I use to keep the grey hair at bay 😁 I love being able to have tinted nails all the time but with zero chemical harm. I started experimenting with self henna pedis last October & am slowly picking up tips & tricks along the way as I redye new nail growth every 6 weeks or so. Too fun to be able to fit this little red top out of a remnant of #thriftedfabric I snatched up for exactly $1 right before quarantine hit 😁 Also loving my now 6 month old initial pair of #mndawncurvejeans more every day as the rigid denim continues to soften... especially since I took a risk intentionally shrinking them in the dryer for a few minutes in prep for #memademay. Prior to a little shrinking, they just bagged out too much after washing. Now I have to work super hard to get the zip up after washing & can barely move for the first hour... but luckily, they soon relax into perfection. My denim is obviously no longer "raw" but I will continue to squeeze in as many wears between laundering as I deem socially acceptable😂 #memademay2020plus #imnot2d #mndawnjeans

I did it! I made a pair of jeans 😱🥳Biggest sewing challenge so far. . . I had had jeans on my sewing wishlist but had put them in the scary too hard basket until @nuno_studio and @marjorie_olliva put out a call that they were setting up a jeans sewing support group and it was the push I needed. I used 12oz denim from @wearethefabricstore and started with the straight leg #mndawnjeans @megannielsenpatterns but I ended up taking in the legs quite a bit until I was happy with them, so it’s kind of a halfway between the straight and tapered leg. . . If you saw some of my stories in the last 3 weeks, these have been a big challenge! I don’t think I would’ve finished if it wasn’t for the support group (thanks ladies!). I used the original waistband, post button and button hole, pockets, belt loops, zipper and fly extensions. My first #rawdenim experiment has outlasted my expectations so far... I'm a good month in with zero washes (I have misted twice with the vinegar/water spray I use to clean practically everything else in my house 😁)I know they say that freezing jeans to kill bacteria is an urban legend, but this subzero Canadian snow weather has got to do *something* to the cooties. I 100% plan to wash eventually but as I'm not sure whether or not this denim is sanforized (which will affect how much shrinkage happens in first wash), I'm attempting to hold off until I've sewn my second pair!!! #mndawn #mndawnjeans #mndawncurvejeans #curvysewingcollective
