It's been an immense few weeks here! We went on an impromptu trip to my parents' in Malaysia, celebrated birthdays and festivities - topped with the customary sickness over the whole period 🤒🤧🤪 I feel truly grateful however, for the plentiful laughters and time spent with family and siblings, including my 1.5yo nephew whom we met for the very first time ❤ Not much sewing was done despite my best intentions (it's the thought that counts, right?! 😆) but I did manage a much-needed new pair of swimsuit for B, and a pair of bloomers for the little nephew 🥰 The latter was all traced, cut and seamed within 2 hours before leaving for the airport! First swimsuit makes of the year! If you’ve followed for awhile, you know I tend to go a little swimsuit making crazy each summer 😅, so I’m sure there will be a couple more in the coming months. But for this first one, I had to start with this delicious textured hot pink swim fabric from @bluemoonfabrics . Suits are #MNcottesloe and #MNminicottesloe . Of course I had to add details 🤪. Both the shoulder ties and belt on my suit are removable. So I can wear the basic suit alone, with shoulder ties, with the belt, or with both! The only change I made was adding the shoulder ruffles at the request of my tiny client. Togs, bathers, swimmers, cozzie… what do you call the items that you wear to swim in? Here in NZ we mainly call them togs 👙 Miss 12 is off to school camp in a few weeks and we are starting to see a bit of summer after all the rain and cyclones that have been battering the South Island. The togs I bought for her mid last season have totally given way and there is nothing to be found in the shops in the style she wants. So mummy and her sewing passion to the rescue!! Missy likes to wear shorties and a rash top. For camp we are adding a bikini top for some modesty. The bikini top and shorts are fully lined, and the rash top in lined on the front only. All three items are made in size 12. We shortened the rash top, but it might have been a bit too much. Oh well, it works for now and I can add a wide band later if needed. My slash and spread distance is 7cm between the bottom corners. • My thoughts: considering this is the first time I’ve sewn swimwear, I’m super pleased with the results. The Mini Cottesloe is a lovely pattern with great instructions. Swim fabric is actually much easier to sew with than I expected. Because of the stripes, I hand tacked the side seams to make sure the stripes matched. • Will I sew swimwear again? I made us matching swimwear 🍊🍋☀️ It was my first try to make swimwear, and it turned out better than i thought. I rarely find swimsuits that look good on me. I liked the high-waist bottoms of this pattern and the fit was also quite good without any adjustments. And it was quick too, so I made 2 bikini sets for myself and 2 for Alina 🤪. Working with swim fabric and elastic took some time to get used to, but after some practice I figured it out. I already took photos of this updated swimsuit for me, but I found the matching one I had made for Penny when going through the tote of clothes, so obviously had to wear and snap a few more at the beach last night with Violet. This was one of the first #mnminicottesloe suits I had made Penny, and it’s still going strong 🥹. I made a bathing suit for my kiddo, who just turned 5. She saw the fabric that I had bought to make myself a suit (purchased on sale last year @blackbirdfabrics and proclaimed that she wanted one too. "But with frills. Like, a skirt AND a frill at the neck." And so, she got one ;) Pattern is the #mnminicottesloe ... she is not big for her age and I made the size 7 and it was TOO SMALL!!! I had to make a whole new top. The high rise bottoms just about fit her but likely won't fit next summer. I find that pretty frustrating, to make two sizes up so that she can wear it next summer and then to find that it is too small! I gathered a long rectangle of fabric on my serger and attached it to the bottom of the top (which I made by extending the bikini top pattern piece). I also added a gathered piece of fabric to the front neckline, which was a bit tricky and is NOT the tidiest ... but it works. I forgot how hard bathing suit making is! Especially making tiny bathing suits ... so fiddly! Anyway, now I have gotten some practice so hopefully mine will be smooth sailing. #imakemykidsclothes #torontosews #pfsewprecious

The instructions and tutorials she offers on this pattern are excellent 🎉.We had so much fun picking out fabric @moodfabrics. I basted and adjusted a bit the bottoms and basically serged everything and then zig zag stitched the elastic in. Also threw in a fun @kylieandthemachine tag - cause why not! My @babylocksewing Evolution handled the challenge like an easy Sunday stroll ☀️and in honor of #sergermonth, I just need to throw it out there to the serger goddesses, I love my Babylock!!!! I sewed my own swimsuit this summer! I used #mncottesloecurve, the plus size #mncottesloe. It may be one of my favorite projects to date. With swimwear, you can see EXACTLY what doesn’t fit right, so it’s easier to make adjustments. I made 4-5 test versions. I usually HATE test versions – who has time to sew things you can’t wear?! – but learned so much with each iteration that I decided to press on. Figuratively. Because you don’t have to press a swimsuit! While no one should be ashamed to post a swimsuit photo, I’m just not there yet. Instead, I am including 1. flat photos of the finished suit, 2. my final mock-up sitting on top of the same size, already-graded original version without other adjustments (much shorter!), 3. photos of lining and adjustments, and 4. photos of my kiddo in a #mnminicottesloe made with scraps. Adjustments: I graded from one shoulder size to several sizes bigger at the waist and back down one at the hip, reduced the leg opening in front so my post-baby stomach didn’t show (like side boob but less attractive), swayback adjustment of 1.5” (adding a seam in back) AND shortened 2” at waist/line, pinched out excess fabric into darts and reshaped armscyes, narrowed shoulder, and shortened shoulder about 3”. I made the plainest silhouette possible (View B). I did a full lining plus shelf bra with cups. I tried sewing the cups right into the lining, but they didn’t stay under my boobs. Then I tried to add elastic into the lining below the cups, but I went back to lining + shelf. Tips/Tricks: Use a walking foot. I used a tricot or triple stitch, which was stitch no. 11 on my Janome. If your seams start waving, increase stitch length – especially for bulky seams or many layers. (I used a stitch length of 1.7). Use ball point pins and needles to avoid poking holes in the fabric. #mncottesloe in a lovely swim fabric from fabric fairy. Instead of using swim lining I lined with the swim fabric, it made it tighter than I like! Loved it before that, but it did feel too slinky without the lining. Skipped elastic around the thighs, arms and neckline and used strips of straight swim fabric instead like bias tape. Next time I plan to raise the bottoms an inch for my long torso and give it a slightly cheekier fit and only line the front of the top and using the gusset for the crotch. Little kid is wearing a #mnminicottesloe hacked to look like a mabo swim suit I love.

I finally succumbed and made my youngest a two-piece swimsuit, which she loves. These are the @megannielsenpatterns #mnminicottesloe in @boodesigns_kristie swim fabric, lining, and elastics with @kylieandthemachine sew-in labels. Top is size 11, graded to a size 12 bottom band, but with 3/4" removed from the length of the top. Bottoms are straight size 12, but with 1" removed from the height of the pants. I also made the waistband elastic longer as even though her measurements matched the size chart, the waistband elastic cut in a bit (I wrapped the elastic firmly around her torso where the bottoms would finish, with negative ease, and used that length. It stretched out a little when I stitched through it, so next time, I will make it a bit tighter, but it is fine for the moment). I very much disliked the pattern instructions for inserting the arm, neck, and leg elastics, and also the lining. For the top I followed the directions as written for elastics, but for the bottoms I used woven swim elastic, not rubber, which gave a much better result, and I also overlapped the ends of the woven elastic by 1cm rather than just butting the ends together. I used the leg elastic lengths as per the #boodesignszipsuit which I know fit well. I also did a full lining, and this is sewn into the side and crotch seams, which gives a much nicer finish than just sliding the completed lining into the completed top/bottom and joining at the elastic seams. #isew #sewistsofinstagram #australiasews #isewmykidsclothes #sydneysews #centralcoastnswsews

I’ve just returned from a week in Cape Cod, where I enjoyed plenty of sunshine, good food and drink, and best of all a great time with family. As a part of my me made wardrobe I made some swimwear. Albeit at the last minute ( are you really a sewer/sewist if you are not sewing for your holiday the night before you leave?) I picked up this gorgeous dead stock liberty swim fabric from Fabric Godmother at the stitch festival this year, with the plan to make mummy and me swimwear. For the little ones suit, I used the #mnminicottesloe pattern with no adjustments and it fit her well. For my suit, I used #closetcorefaye swimsuit with adjustments. I chose to use this as I make a number of closet core items and knew what adjustments to make using their block. I did a 1.5” FBA but rotated out the dart. I lengthened the back piece so that it would cover the back band of a bra I put in. The bra I sewed in is a #lilypadesigns #lusaminebrapattern with the cups made of foam. On this occasion I just sewed the top of the side and rear of the bra into the top. This gave me really comfortable support, and I felt confident on my days on the beach and in the water. I made no changes to the bottoms. #mnminicottesloe pattern by @megannielsenpatterns 😎 My little pony swim fabric from stash.🐴 This is the third time I’ve made this pattern and I’m beginning to feel more comfortable (and patient) with all the elastic application. It’s a lot! I only had a very small piece of fabric, which has been sitting in my stash for YEARS. I made view c, but added the waist piece for a slightly higher rise. Fitting notes: 👙I made size 5, but tried the elastic on the waist and underbust before applying, and added about an inch for future proofing. 👙While making this I felt like there might be some places that need more tension on the elastic than others. I noticed that with this and my last mini-Cottesloe that the elastic on the middle of the scoop back seems not want to lie entirely flat. I think maybe it needs a bit more tension across it than the rest of the neckline because of the deep shape of the curve? I’m not entirely sure if that would solve the problem. Been planning this swim and shirt combo for months 💁🏻‍♀️. Had a photo of a Sezane look saved on my phone (peep the inspo photo in my stories or saved in my highlight), and had found a few print contenders on @spoonflower. Ended up going with this floral beauty, even though the color is a lot lighter blue and not an exact match. I thought it still have a similar vibe! Plus the biggest thing I wanted to re-create was the matching swim and shirt cover up look. For swim fabric I went with their Sport Lycra, and the shirt is Organic Cotton Sateen. I’ll also add a link to the print in my stories! For my swimsuit, I used @madeformermaids Shelly suit, and the shirt is #vikisews_Cynthia . Funny story with the shirt pattern - it’s not only sold individually by size, but also by length. So I order my size, but accidentally got the longest one, intended for people much taller than me 😂. But since I plan to wear it as a swimsuit cover up, I decided to just roll with the super oversized look 💁🏻‍♀️. Oh, and I also accidentally sewed the buttonholes and buttons on the wrong sides of the placket 😬. That’s what happens when I sew at night 🤪. I’m learning to live with it 😂. And of course I had to make matching suits for the girls. They're off to school, with smiles on their faces, so I'm happy. ☺️ Link in his Champion's Tunic and Stufful the Pokemon. Link: I hacked the Scout tee pattern by @grainlinestudio in its smallest size. I changed the neckline, reshaped the sleeve and added side slits. Broadcloth is from @fabriclandontario and as I mentioned, trim is drawer liner. I freestyled the boots and arm warmers, and the rest was thrifted. The pants are a size too big, and I'm really trying to let it go!! 🤣 The Sheikah slate was fun to do, I printed this outline I found online, stuck it on a cardboard box, and coloured it in. Easy peasy. @13ange took care of the sword and sheath, and the Hyrulean shield should be ready by the 31st. Stufful: another pattern hack, a mashup of @megannielsenpatterns Mini Briar and Mini Cottesloe. Fabric is the coziest fleecy knit also from @fabriclandontario (perfect for Halloween in Ottawa ❄️) It was an adventure to get this to work. I ended up adding many inches to the middle of the Cottesloe bottom till it matched the circumference of the Briar. I gathered the seams at the leg openings and added velcro at the crotch to get the darn thing on without a centre front zip. The neckline was too low, but I was able to self draft a hood using one of her RTW hoodies as a guide. Ears and white trim done by feel! 😄 The tail is my favourite part, I stuck a balloon in there to get the nice round shape. Then I had to make it detachable in case it caused her problems at school.
