I've gone for a change from my usual style for my first make of #2024 ! . . These are the @megannielsenpatterns #MNOpalPants , which I originally made years ago in a camel coloured fabric and I hated them! I don't really wear trousers in the whole beige / camel spectrum and I made so many mistakes while making them that the sight of them made me rage. But that wasn't the pattern's fault, it was mine, so I felt 2024 was the year they deserved a resurrection and here's the result! . . They were meant to have a paper bag waist, but I got cocky and read the wrong part of the instructions so it hasn't worked. But seeing as that's the only error, they're still very wearable and the shape is nice. . . There's a fine line between stylish and pyjama when it comes to trousers with a pattern on them (as opposed to plain) and I'm not sure if I've crossed it here or not 🤔 it might be because I don't often wear florals as I find them a little too girlie for my taste, but I think, I THINK this works? Does it work? I'm not sure 🤣 the colours are nice though! Fabric was purchased on a whim from a closing down sale : even the colour is really girlie , I'm not sure what was up with me that day! Clearly I was feeling extra femme : a rare occurrence! . . I'm wearing them out today so I can ponder whether or not I like them. On the plus side they have an elasticated waist so I can eat more. Blue linen pants and waistcoat. I was completely inspired by 2 creations of @thesaraproject_ to create these items from Drapers Fabric blue honeycomb linen. I can't see me wearing these together a lot (or ever!) but as separates they will work very well with several capsule wardrobe items I am in various stages of completing. The pants are made from my trusty Megan Nielsen pants pattern. The vest is the Common Stitch pipit vest. I lengthened the short version by around 5cms but to be honest it's still a bit short at the back for me. Another pair of Opal pants in a thick crepe back satin from The Fabric Store. This fabric is a gorgeous colour but has unfortunately sold out. I've lost count of all the variations of opal pants I've made, and I may have another pair planned. Here’s my most recent make: Opal wide leg pants in dark chocolate brown linen that I finished last week. Both the first pic and the video of me 360 in the second slide are taken in my little garden that is looking lush and green. I have worn these pants pretty much every day since I finished them. The brown, a colour I’m getting used to bc I’m trying to wear out my black clothes, works with most of my tips like the modified, atleast 10 yo RTW top I’m wearing here. I’ve been wanting to make a pair of high-waisted wide-leg pants with a comfy elastic waistband, and I finally decided on the #MNopalpants by @megannielsenpatterns. I had every intention of making a pair of neutral, everyday pants, but I don’t really have neutral, everyday fabric? So I went with a beautiful heavy linen floral tablecloth. The pants turned out a bit like modern beach pajamas with both in-seam and rear patch pockets. My mom and I decided to install the in-seam pockets with French seams and hand sew the hems because we’re ridiculous, and we had to mend a small hole on the rear. We also widened the waistband from 1” to 2” to hit at my natural waist. I’m pretty pleased with the result! (Though I’d still like to make a similar pant in a neutral vintage linen if anyone out there wants to send me some. 🤣) Onto the next project! #christyandsandymakeclothes #vintage

My top 9 liked projects for 2024. Themes: Jeans. I discovered I love jeans with darts and don't enjoy fitting or wearing very rigid denim with no darts. I loved the papercut Sera and Chalk and notch isle jeans patterns but basically haven't worn the Megan Nielsen dawn jeans since this photo! Pink. There is a fair bit of my trusty blue in these photos, but also a lot of bright pink! Trusty patterns. Yay for Megan Nielsen opal pants, the Clo Bias skirt and the Treasurie cap sleeve top patterns. Successes: As stated above - jeans with darts ❤️ Both pairs of wide leg opal pants and cap sleeve tops are super comfy, beginner patterns and gets lots of comments Basics - Linen Clo Bias skirt and Ilford jacket - these are relatively new makes but already go with everything! Failures: The rigid denim Dawn jeans. I love Megan Nielsen patterns but these were very hard to make fit my body and they just aren't comfy! Sort of failures: The Roscoe sweater - the elastic round the bottom made this a comfort failure for me but my 13 year old has inherited it and loves it! My Springe dress - this probably just needs altering round the neckline . It seems gaping is quite a common issue. I'm not confident I will wear it a lot otherwise! Where are my fabrics from: The Fabric Store - gingham line, dark denim, fushcia satin, olya shirt print, pink linen, rigid organic denim and knits for Roscoe. You know when there’s one item of clothing that you always look for but can never find? For me it’s leather shorts, I’ve always wanted a pair, but as a plus sized person there are virtually no options. After seeing some I loved (but could neither afford nor fit into) on Net-a-Porter I decided to make my own. . These are made from faux leather that I searched all over for and found on @minervadotcom. The fabric is great, looks and feels like the real thing and apparently is washable. The pattern is the @megannielsenpatterns #mnopal in the shorts view with paperbag waist and belt. . Not going to lie these were hard to sew. The faux leather behaves well if you’re sewing right sides together. But that isn’t always possible. Nothing helped, I tried a non stick foot, walking foot, leather needle, long stitch length. In the end I had to finish them on my industrial machine. It sewed like a dream, but I know that’s not something most people have access to. I’ve been on annual leave this week, and self-isolating for the past 3 days, because I’m getting 3 wisdom teeth out under general anesthesia tomorrow 🤞🏽 so I’ve been sewing and made a whole outfit!! Made some Opal Shorts! These were a great marker on my way to sewing pants that are: 1) comfortable, and 2) fit ok. If anyone has spoken with me lately about anything crafty, you've probably heard my rantings about crotch fitting whilst sewing pants 😅 But happy to say that progress is happening! Lessons learned on this project: ⭐ Toiling is very important when sewing pants. Seriously. Toile more than once until you're happy with the fit! Also, quickly Basting the seams is a great way to get an idea of fit too. ⭐ How to adjust the front rise to avoid crotch poofy-ness (google it, it's helpful) ⭐ I love my new el-cheapo bodkin. Best $3.65 I've spent in a while, and everything I sew will now include drawstrings just so I can use it, lol. I made it from a Robert Kaufman poly suiting to test the pattern out. I'd definitely recommend this one - it's easy to sew and trendy! ⠀ ⠀ I cut a 14 waist blending to a 10 hip. The 14 is a size smaller than my measurements, and the 10 matches them. When I make them again I will go down another size and also do a flat seat adjustment to account for extra fabric there. I just have skinny legs I suppose. This past weekend’s project was this pair of @megannielsenpatterns #mnopal shorts! When there’s very little sewing time to be had, I fall back on patterns that I’ve already made for some quick gratification. I had always meant to make another pair but what really made me start having this pindot linen that I wanted to use. I had made it into a pair of Pomona pants and an Agustina boxy top last year, but they weren’t the right size for me anymore. So I played some pattern Tetris and managed to cut this pair of Opal shorts! I had enough to cut inseam pockets and belt loops but not enough for the waist tie. I also skipped the paperbag waist. Made some Opal Shorts! These were a great marker on my way to sewing pants that are: 1) comfortable, and 2) fit ok. If anyone has spoken with me lately about anything crafty, you've probably heard my rantings about crotch fitting whilst sewing pants 😅 But happy to say that progress is happening! Lessons learned on this project: ⭐ Toiling is very important when sewing pants. Seriously. Toile more than once until you're happy with the fit! Also, quickly Basting the seams is a great way to get an idea of fit too. ⭐ How to adjust the front rise to avoid crotch poofy-ness (google it, it's helpful) ⭐ I love my new el-cheapo bodkin. Best $3.65 I've spent in a while, and everything I sew will now include drawstrings just so I can use it, lol. Pattern is the #mnopal from @megannielsenpatterns and I'm keen to toile the wide- and narrow-legged pants soon! We’re excited to be now stocking hemp fabrics. We’ve got knit and woven options. This image shows off our small but beautiful woven collection - five colours in a light-mid weight plain weave fabric. Very similar to linen and can be used as you would linen. This weight would make great casual tops, relaxed skirts or light weight shorts/trousers. Perfect for warmer weather sewing - light, breathable and temperature regulating. Pre-washed at the mill for a soft lived in look, it will continue to soften with wear and washing. Me Made May - day one! Gettin this in before the toddler wakes up! #mnopalshorts and both shirt and duster from the naniiro pattern book. All fabrics from @blackbirdfabrics I made the top and duster pieces when I was still pregnant two years ago, and then the shorts in a post partem delirium, wanting a comfy paperback waist. They're still so great a few years later, though recently I hemmed the duster two inches shorter and it hits at a better height and will be getting much more wear this summer. Colour has made its way back into my wardrobe after a few years of neutrals took over while living in Vancouver. After buying the @megannielsenpatterns #mnopal a while ago, I finally got around to making them. I bought the pattern for this longer shorts length option actually, but I haven’t really seen that many versions of it. I used a lyocell twill that I bought off a destash, and it really has just the nicest drape but I’m a bit stumped as to what to wear with it! 🤷🏻‍♀️ I modified the construction of the pockets a little, using the method that @teridodds1 shared in her highlights. It’s the only way I sew inseam pockets now! I added a line of topstitching on the pocket to mimic some RTW shorts I’ve seen. Finished my first pair of #mnopalshorts in this lovely linen. Basically a one afternoon sew with just hemming and pressing tonight. Super comfy fit and my first time sewing linen, which was more forgiving than I thought it would be. Made as per pattern instructions except all internal seams finished as French seams to stop them fraying away. Really happy with my first ever shorts! Quick snap of my #mnopalshorts - went out for dinner Monday night and feverishly sprang into action to get them finished for our holiday, as after sorting the kids out, I didn’t really have much to wear myself 😅. Fabric is a dobby viscose from #atelierbrunette … No pattern changes, apart from lengthening the long shorts by 2” - as no wants to see my legs nowadays and I’m taller than average 😀. Well it’s February 14th and I finally completed my #makenine2022 list! This year I was much more thoughtful about my list. My criteria were: a variety of garment types (plus one bag); only patterns I already have fabric for; garments I know I’ll get a lot of use out of; garments that use a variety of techniques, or are garments I have not made for myself before. I’m really committed this year to using the (extensive) pattern and fabric stashes that I already own!!

Latest (un-ironed) holiday make #mnopal by @megannielsenpatterns and made up in @tessutifabrics Old Rose Pebble Wash linen. I made the high waisted shorts with a paper bag waist but opted for the in-seam pockets rather than the patch pockets. They are exceptionally comfortable but I think I might need to bring them up by an inch. At the current length they remind me of some shorts my grandmother used to wear and while she’s got great style (I have regularly raided her wardrobe for vintage clothes) it’s not really the vibe I’m going for with this. But I also don’t know if I can be bothered to change it. I used cotton thread rather than polyester and that might be a factor in why my crotch seam has split three times so I will need to go back and double stitch that properly to avoid embarrassing myself at the local park! . . . #tessutifabrics #tessutifabricsfriday #megannielsenpatterns #mnopalshorts

I’m here with another @makerist_com customer ambassador project. I made a really quick and simple Blossom crop top by @laurenvandermast. I knew this was a basic pattern (in a good way!), so I thought I’d make it more fun by using a colourful fabric. I rummaged through my stash and found this cotton/ linen gingham remnant from @neridahansenfabrics, which worked perfectly. I’ve paired the cami with my Opal shorts from @megannielsenpatterns, which I made last year using linen blend fabric from @de_linum in the desert sand colourway. Getting beach ready, I finally finished this oversized blouse and shirt set. I’m really happy with the results. Top - Merchant & Mills #mmellsworth I am 5’ 2” size 12/14 top and I cut a 12. I kept the lenght. Shortened the sleeve 4cm and drafted a longer pointed collar. I overlocked all the seams, instead of the French seaming in the instructions. Short - Megan Nielsen #mnopal I’m a 12 bottom and I cut the 12 short with side and back pockets. I made a deep hem the same as the top, so making the shorts shorter than pattern. It’s a great block shape for adaptations. The only small change I made was to scoop out the lower front rise to make a deeper curve as I felt the line was very shallow, and I’d noticed on other wearers it sits very close at this point and I wanted a slightly more relaxed rise. @merchantandmills @megannielsenpatterns a great match #mnopalshorts #memade #pocketrocketvintage

You know when there’s one item of clothing that you always look for but can never find? For me it’s leather shorts, I’ve always wanted a pair, but as a plus sized person there are virtually no options. After seeing some I loved (but could neither afford nor fit into) on Net-a-Porter I decided to make my own. . These are made from faux leather that I searched all over for and found on @minervadotcom. The fabric is great, looks and feels like the real thing and apparently is washable. The pattern is the @megannielsenpatterns #mnopal in the shorts view with paperbag waist and belt. . Not going to lie these were hard to sew. The faux leather behaves well if you’re sewing right sides together. But that isn’t always possible. Nothing helped, I tried a non stick foot, walking foot, leather needle, long stitch length. In the end I had to finish them on my industrial machine. It sewed like a dream, but I know that’s not something most people have access to. Cut an 8 for her as she likes them a bit loose and changed the length (shorter than the knee length shorts but longer than the short version) because my mum is tiny!
