Crafts evening tonight involved most of a #MNminiDarlingRanges dress which other people said was very beachy and resembled a sarong - this was very insightful of them because it is in fact made out of a sarong that my brother-in-law and sister-in-law brought back for me from Fiji! I don't wear sarongs, but I do have a lot of use for a large piece of fabric 😁 / It's rayon and pretty shifty, but it's a gathered dress for Sewing Helper, so accuracy isn't the most important thing ever! It also has a bit of a grey tinge from where I washed it with Mr Octopus' black jeans. I'm glad I managed to keep the original tassels along the hem 🙂 / Photo 2 is of the standard lamp that I bought on a whim from Rozelle Markets one weekend and brought home on the bus (got a lot of funny looks 😂) and it's been hanging around the place for literally years because I couldn't get the light fitting to stick to the top of the wooden post, because turns out gluing wood to plastic is hard? But I bought special glue and stuck it all together the other weekend and now I have yet another lamp! Of course, I actually made two dresses at the same time, because the girls like to match and both like having things made for them!! For this @megannielsenpatterns #mnminidarlingranges dress I had the right amount of fabric to make it for my 7 year old (size 8-9) so I enjoyed spending some time on getting the pattern across the front to work. My only frustration is that it actually worked better with the button placket the other way round but I didn’t want to confuse her but having it opening ‘wrong’. Repurpose Dress Cutting: 30 minutes Sewing: 2 hours Pattern: Megan Nielsen mini Darling Ranges Size 6 #mnminidarlingranges Modified to have grown on sleeve Materials: Cotton Kmart dress worn while recovering from C-section. $25 Buttons: $0.60: purchased from clothing down clothing shop for $2 for 24. Notes: I wanted to keep this as simple as possible. So bottom of the existing dress became the bodice and the upper part was kept intact with pockets to become the new skirt, pockets are big but they’ll work. I did the modification straight onto the fabric rather than make a new pattern. The bodice of the original dress was shirred so I didn’t use it. I dropped the grown on sleeve 1.5cm next time I would drop it 3cm

Girls’ Christmas dresses are done! We visited the @atelier_to_naniiro_textile shop in Osaka on our recent holiday and this is the fabric G9 chose. #cottondoublegauze is perfect for this hot sticky weather we’ve been getting, not unlike the day we visited the shop. I made my delightful daughter a #MNminidarlingranges out of some stashed cotton duck from spotlight. It wouldn't have been my first choice but the skirt puffs out quite nicely due to the weight of it. I topped it off with some gorgeous @arrowmountain buttons.

We LOVE using thrifted sheets for toiles in our pattern testing process. A new dress for my 5 year old! This is the @megannielsenpatterns #mnminidarlingranges dress and I love it!! I literally only had 1m of this fabric because it was the end of bolt and I purposely hadn’t ordered it sooner. So whilst I had initially intended to make a sleeved versions, this was all I could manage and had to not be precious about pattern matching either - she’s 5 but this is a 6-7 and she’s very tall! Still, I think the end result isn’t bad and it’ll be well worn!! I love doing buttonholes on my newish machine as they work like a dream! And…another of my #makenine2024 done. Elastic - stash Total: $25.80 Notes: Sleeves are too long. Next time shorten. I didn’t pull length from pattern just guessed, This pattern has a deep 6cm hem which can be lowered, that combined with the overly long sleeves it will likely fit for 2-3 years.

Lots of pictures of Sewing Helper in a #MNminiDarlingRanges, plus stay to the end for some beat poetry that she made out of fridge magnet words. / Ok, so overall I quite liked this pattern. I had meant to put the ties on, but then I forgot, oops. I think the v neck is a bit low, although it certainly lengthened over the day because this is rayon. (I don't have an issue with it being "revealing"; I'm more interested in sun protection.) I'm not sure about the way the placket and neckline are finished? I think I followed the instructions correctly and it's okay but a little weird? I'm very happy I managed to keep the tassels from the original sarong I made this out of! Oh and I sewed on the buttons by machine and I'm *never* *going* *back* to hand sewing them!! / Poses are the subject's own choice. Photos 6 and 7 feature a superhero pose (and also demonstrate the difference between my phone camera and my actual camera...) / Photo 2 I hesitated about posting, given the current conversation about Asian cultural appropriation - I don't know where she picked that pose up, and I don't know what she thinks the pose is (I will ask, but this was after dinner and it's not the best time for discussions involving higher brain functions) - I certainly don't think she's intending to be mocking or imitative, but that it's just a cool pose. Don't think it's from her martial arts class, and it could well be from martial arts in kids' TV. But she has done other posing actions before that, while completely innocent on her part, were quickly squashed by me and Mr Octopus - pulling the corners of her eyes, for example. Anyway, I wasn't sure about this one.
