Me Made May Day 18 - Some days you dress like a bowling dad, some days you wear a circle skirt designed for twirling in gardens and frolicking through flowers. It’s called range. ALSO. The #sewfrugal challenge is one of my favourites because it takes me a little out of my comfort zone. I had so many ideas for this year’s challenge, but life took over and this #mnveronika from @megannielsenpatterns is all I got done. Despite my penchant throughout my 20s for the 1950s-style 'new look' silhouette, and despite the abundance of free tutorials and resources - I've never made a circle skirt. Until now, that is! I've had a black circle skirt on my to-make list for years, but never got around to it. But when I was looking for a relatively simple and quick project to ease back into sewing after a couple of months' break, I figured was time to cross it off my list! I used the free Veronika skirt pattern from @megannielsenpatterns and made view A with the wide waistband and scalloped pockets. I have an older version of the pattern and made size XS, which based on the measurements seems to be roughly equivalent to the size 4 on the current pattern. The fabric is from @wearethefabricstore and has been in my stash for a while - it's a black stretch cotton sateen. To reduce bulk, I cut the pocket linings from scraps of my favourite Summer Petals printed cotton voile. I let the skirt hang for a while week before hemming, but to my surprise it didn't stretch so I didn't actually have to trim it!  The only mishap I had while sewing was that my machine completely jammed up while I was finishing the hem! I had to bring the skirt with the machine to the repair shop because the needle had gotten stuck so far down. Thankfully they were able to remove the skirt with no damage and I hand-sewed the last 20cm of the hem at home. My machine is being repaired and I'm looking forward to being reunited with it soon! This was a lovely easy and fun sew to ease into the new year (machine mishaps aside). In basic black, this skirt feels like a very classic item to have in my wardrobe and will be easy to style with my tops and blouses for work or the weekend. New skirt + pretty shoes! And pretty rug! Pattern: @megannielsenpatterns #mnveronika circle skirt (a #freesewingpattern), same size as last time (I can't remember what size it is right now!) Fabric: Navy Ponti de Roma from @backstreetbargains Hacks: I took 7.5cm off the hem. I also did the patch pockets, which you're not really meant to do with the knit fabric option but this is Ponti so it has some great structure and I was able to get away with it (so far ...). I didn't line the pockets as I wasn't sure my machine would cope with so many layers. I'm probably going to make one in black Ponti too, but I do have a few rtw black skirts already so it's not a huge priority. I made the top, also, but that's going to get its own post when I get around to hemming & photographing it properly. I also painted the wall & trim behind me. Yes I'm going to mention that every time cos it was a total pain 🤣 Shoes: London in blue velvet, from @charliestoneshoes. I actually have four pairs of their shoes and I need to wear them out more often. So pretty! So comfy! My second make for the #sewfrugal23 challenge is a circle skirt in a beautiful viscose linen that I originally bought from @beyond.thepinkdoor. I used the free @byhandlondon circle skirt calculator to make a half circle skirt which fit on the width of my fabric. I added the scalloped pockets and waistband from the free @megannielsenpatterns #mnveronika skirt. This is the loveliest, swishiest skirt and will be perfect when the warmer weather arrives! Finished @megannielsenpatterns #mnveronika in a cream pleather. Size 10, no alterations needed. It was my first time working with pleather and wasn’t sure how to approach pressing seams, so I finger pressed them and then let each seam sit overnight with 35 pound kettlebells on top 😅 It’s a really simple pattern but I really like it! Since the weather has been terrible (cyclone after cyclone, with heavy rain in between! ☔) I've basically given up on summer and been doing a lot of knitting rather than sewing. Combined with a LOT of knitting in hospital late last year, I now have the body and neckband completed on my cardigan! I've used 2 of the 3 100grm balls I bought 🧶 Pattern: @poisongrrls #honeybopcardigan in size M. I haven't yet decided if I'll do the puff sleeves or not. Yarn: Ashton Mackenzie 100% NZ merino 4ply, in black Buttons: Black mother of pearl, from my stash. I thought they were well spaced but clearly not 😆 This pattern is kinda fun, and there's a surprising amount of shaping in the body! I was worried it was too big but the neckband has pulled it together nicely and I guess the same will happen with the sleeves + armholes. The skirt is part of my transition to my final form: Hobbit Librarian! I made it a year ago but I still haven't hemmed it because I don't know how long I want it! Today is a big day! Happy birthday to me! Birthday tradition in my house requires that I get a fancy breakfast at some point on my birthday, so hubby is taking me out for brunch. Is there such a thing as too much twirl? Not in my world! Swipe to see (too many photos) the twirl in action This #mnveronikaskirt by Megan Nielsen is a free download for newsletter subscribers (sizes 0-20 and 14-30 curve) and it is beautifully constructed. It’s a simple design, but it’s the Big Pocket Energy that makes this more than “just” a well designed circle skirt. If I’m honest, I’m not sure a wide waistband is the best style for the shape my body is now. But there is a narrow waistband option that I’ll use for the next make. What I really enjoy is that this is suitable for woven and knits and the instructions are super clear for both fabrics. I’m definitely keen to try this in a knit too. Absolutely love this Cheetah’s Garden by @deb.mcnaughton It’s more “muted” (lol, that makes me laugh since this is colourful as heck) than my other Deb prints but it’s just as glorious and I can’t wait to see how many different ways I can style this. I made a jersey circle skirt! 💃 . This is the @megannielsenpatterns Veronika skirt (a free pattern!). My measurements put me between a size 4 and a size 6. I made a size 4 because I knew the jersey would stretch and I could fine tune the fit with the waistband elastic. I used a double brushed polyester jersey from @joann_stores that’s been in my stash for half a year. . I added huge side seam pockets (the awesome kind that are anchored to the waistband) using the free pocket template from @montoyamayo. For the waistband elastic, I stitched it down to the inside half of the waistband before sewing the waistband to the skirt (see the last picture). This keeps the elastic from shifting or rolling, but keeps the outside of the waistband clean. Otherwise, I made no changes. . I’ve left the hem raw for now, since jersey doesn’t fray. But I may hem it just to get the length at or slightly above my knee. It’s a super comfy skirt! It’s a simple design, but it’s the Big Pocket Energy that makes this more than “just” a well designed circle skirt. If I’m honest, I’m not sure a wide waistband is the best style for the shape my body is now. But there is a narrow waistband option that I’ll use for the next make. What I really enjoy is that this is suitable for woven and knits and the instructions are super clear for both fabrics. I’m definitely keen to try this in a knit too. Absolutely love this Cheetah’s Garden by @deb.mcnaughton It’s more “muted” (lol, that makes me laugh since this is colourful as heck) than my other Deb prints but it’s just as glorious and I can’t wait to see how many different ways I can style this. Finished a circle skirt today with massive pockets, hem facing, and first ever invisible (ish) zipper. Also first experience seeing with rayon and it was OK, not great. Not sure I’ll make another - it’s an unwieldy and impractical amount of fabric, and the straight waistband doesn’t sit right. But it was an excellent learning experience that yielded a wearable garment. Patiently waiting to hem this bad boy! I actually started making my #mnveronika skirt on the 01st January when I realised I had lost my sewing machines zipper foot. Nightmare! Anyway, I ordered another one from Sewing Parts and have finally had a chance to put in the invisible zip. It was my first time putting one in and I was super nervous I would ruin it but the pattern instructions were so clear it actually worked out really well. Hoping to finish the hemming tomorrow.

Me Made May Day 21 and I'm trying out my tulle circle skirt again, but full disclaimer I will probably put some comfy trousers on in a hour or so! My pale pink linen top is @shopwiksten Shift Top that I made from an upcycled pillow case. I bought the fabric for my skirt when we lived in Almaty Kazakhstan and the satin underskirt has a beautiful weight and makes a great sound when I move it around - does that make sense? I used the free Veronika skirt pattern from @megannielsenpatterns and I will try a different waistband as this wide elastic one isn't quite right. I made a reversible top! I used the Ellie and Mac #sunnydaydress top, and to make it reversible, I just folded the hem up into each other and topstitched, using coordinating threads respectively for the bobbin and top thread. I should have made it a tad longer so I could tuck it in better or shorter to let the waistband show, but whatever! My love for circle skirts is strong. I’ve made a number of Megan Nielsen Veronika skirts (a free pattern!) and I love them every time. The only modification I make is to add inseam pockets instead of using patch pockets. 🩷 Happy V/Galentine's Day ♥️ I normally sew with my two faves @you_cansew and @sarah.sews.sometimes on a Wednesday night and in honour of Galentine's Day (which I now realise is actually the day before Valentine's apparently 🤷🏼‍♀️) we all decided to sew up fabric from our stash that was perfect for a girl's night...of sewing. This 'sweet pink love' by @doopsdesigns was the obvious choice. I'd actually had this #sagebrushtop and fabric combo saved in @stash_hub for months after Sarah sent me a pic of another maker who had had the brilliant idea to combine these two. I'm sorry to say I can't remember the maker, but it's been living rent free in my head ever since I saw it. The Sagebrush is a lovely sew and combines all the things I love (ruffles, big sleeve energy). It's my second and I'm not sure why I waited so long to make another. I made a small and the only mod was to lop a bit of length off. Other than that, it's a 👌🏼 fit right out of the packet. Didn't line it, too lazy, so I added neck and arm banding... Those of you that sew circle skirts, what's your go-to method for evening the hem and finishing the hem? I tried laying the skirt out and putting the pattern piece on top to trim the excess, but it still looks rough 😬 need a better way! Help! I think I’ve said something to this extent before, but I’ll say it again. There is a lot of chaos and evil in this world, but there is still so much good.
