The second Hovea coat I’ve made, this one out of a dreamy Melton wool, unlined and not quilted this time. So warm and soft, and the deep pockets are amazing. I totally love this fabric from @surgefabricshop and the pattern, and the pure pleasure of making amazing things with my sewing machine. ps, I am 15 weeks post-op and am grateful that my mobility has improved so much. This past week allowed me to get on my bike, start some basic running, and even boulder a teeny tiny bit. All of it very bite sized chunks because my leg muscle is pretty weak; the next few months are all about strengthen/rest/repeat. Twinning is winning Uit de restjes van de mooie Kantha deken ging nog een gilet voor Cato. Kunnen we twinnen ❤️ Ik gebruikte de all time favourite Ester&Ebbe en paste deze aan. De onderkant nam ik 8cm in en de okselgaten heb ik met 2x 1cm omgezoomd nadat ik deze ongeveer een centimeter wijder knipte. De randen werkte ik allemaal af met de zelfkant van de deken met een mooi borduurpatroon er in. En uiteraard weer de flat felled seams om de binnenkant mooi af te werken. Kantha jasje Een van mijn doelen dit jaar was het naaien van een jasje voor mijzelf. Met deze Kantha deken zag ik het helemaal voor me. Het was even puzzelen met alle lijnen, kleurverlopen, structuren en oneffenheden in de deken om er een jasje uit te halen wat niet volledig at random is geknipt. Helaas gaat knippen niet zo 'economisch' dan. Het patroon heeft eigenlijk kleinere zakken als je de cropped versie maakt, maar ik heb de zakken hoger geplaatst zodat ze niet in de zoom mee naar binnen worden gevouwen, anders vind ik ze te klein. De zoom heb ik precies in de naad van de zak gestikt (stitch in de ditch). Ook wilde ik een zelfkant van de stof gebruiken aan de zak zodat de gestikte rand terugkomt. Hierdoor is de kleine kromming in de zak wel een rechte lijn geworden. Ik maakte een ongevoerd jasje omdat de binnenkant ook gezien mag worden. Ik heb flat felled seams genaaid in plaats van biaisband, dat vond ik mooier. Het patroon heeft heel veel opties qua lengtes, zakken, gevoerd of ongevoerd, en duidelijke instructies met plaatjes. ✂️ patroon: Hovea jacket @megannielsenpatterns View E 🪡 Kantha deken @mipi.thelabel Label gekregen van @lies.enco 💪 first time : flat felled seams 💭 Note to self : hij valt (zoals beloofd) oversized. I’m excited to present my first quilt coat! The pattern I used was the #patchworkchorecoat by @patchworkandpoodles The Chore Coat checked so many boxes for me! The size runs to 3XL. It has a hood. There’s a tutorial for zipper closure. The seams are bound inside like a quilt. Mods: I added darts. With bound seams, my sides were already sewn THREE TIMES. Instead, I pinched out fabric in the unfinished armholes and then reduced the sleeve caps. I hesitated partway through and reduced the dart width and wish I hadn’t. I don’t think I have a future in fashion design. But it’s done! I used the zipper hack from the designer’s blog. I can’t wait to get started on my “real” version with blocks I’ve quilted myself. I also purchased several other great patterns before I found this one. One was the #colettealbion by Colette Patterns. The style is very cool. My only hesitation was sizing stops at 2XL, so I would have had to self-draft grading to a bigger size across my stomach. I might try this with fabric I haven’t spent time quilting first. (The pattern predates the company’s @seamwork model and inclusive size range.) I also bought the #mnhovea (#mnhoveacurve for extended sizing) by @megannielsenpatterns. It’s a well-drafted pattern, and I love that many other people have sewn it and posted photos. But I REALLY wanted a hood and zipper for my first coat. I’ll still use this pattern for a different project. In addition to patterns I bought, I also combed through dozens of “maybes” or patterns I rejected based on sizing. So discouraging! Meet Dianna, my newest sweater. (Can you guess why? Hint:🍁) In my lifelong quest to be one big blanket, I made my first lined Hovea Curve (View E) by @megannielsenpatterns from flannel/flannelette. I would say this was a confident beginner make due to my inability to stitch in the ditch for the collar band. I also took liberties with the collar band ends because I just wanted to finish it. The last picture is of my lined pockets (4 in total) which I am super proud of even though you can’t see it from the outside. This cropped #MNHovea was in a #GAndGSewingSociety kit quite a while ago. I cut it out but never got round to sewing it up for one reason or another. Anyway, my mum felt sorry for the poor jacket and sewed it for me earlier this month (thanks @sunshinemakes) and today is its first outting. I'm wearing it with a plain black #SOIAudreyTop Which is proving a very useful basic.

My me made dress and coat for the evening at Plymouth Frocktails. I made the ME2016 in Fabric Godmother Manon viscose lawn.I lined the bodice and sleeves with an old cotton sheet to give structure. The quilted coat is the Hovea by Megan Neilson using the Etched diamond expansion pattern by Shannon Fraser. The Fabric is Fableism Nocturn Chambray. It took a while to make but is so comfy and warm . Plymouth Frocktails was such fun. Lovely to see all the other sewists creations, very inspiring. Here is the finished #refebulous2025 coat. It’s a #mnhovea and the back is made of English paper pieced hexagons cut from fabric swatch books and the quilted onto some remnants of sweatshirting. Leftover hexagons appliquéd on. The red fabric has been waiting for a plan in the stash for probably five years, and most of the internal seams are bound with viscose jersey binding. It was made with help from @percylemoomoo @thriftystitcher @beyond_measure_uk @avantiwestcoast @guthrieghani_studio. Thanks to @madebyliesl for hosting the challenge and providing inspiration ☺️ did I mention I’m really happy with it? ☺️

I thought my timing was off when I started to sew this quilted jacket and the weather went warm but in true British form the cold weather has come back. This is my 3rd #mnhovea I had been resisting this blanket from @jysk.uk for months but then @sewlikedotty completely enabled me and it landed on my doorstep. Mainly sewn on virtual sessions so the @virtualsewingroom label is rather fitting.

Another great day on Sunday at the @southernsewcial Sunshine, sewing, lovely ladies and yummy cake. I decided to have a day of binding and made my 2nd @megannielsenpatterns #mnhovea. Version B, mid length with binding and ties. I’ve used a quilted bedspread which I purchased reduced from @dunelmuk I did unpick all the original binding to reuse but I decided to make my own so popped to @stitchery_do to find some matching cotton.

It's been so long since I last sewed anything. But my machine has started to call to me, and my head has been full of ideas that need to be made. Here is one of my first projects. Completely inspired by a version @heysewgeorgie made, I needed this quilted print in my wardrobe, a perfect jacket for autumn as it approaches. ✂️ This is the Megan Nielsen Hovea #mnhovea 🧵 I used the Fabric Godmother Filly horse quilted cotton with premade binding from them too @fabricgodmother 🪡 I made view B in size 8. Mijn jaarlijks stoffenbudget is eerder beperkt maar soms kom ik al eens een duurder stofje tegen dat perfect is voor een project dat al lang op mijn wishlist staat. Tijdens een workshop in De De Stoffenkamer viel mijn oog op deze stof. Omdat ik geen impulsaankopen wil doen of stapels stof wil verzamelen die gewoon in een kast of doos liggen te wachten, liet ik ze toch liggen. Enkele dagen later keerde ik terug. Ik bekeek ze nog eens, liet ze weer liggen, maar kocht alvast het patroon dat ik voor ogen had. Een week later fietste ik nog eens terug. Ik had het patroon uitgetekend en wist intussen dat ik de stof echt heel mooi vond en dat ze zou passen bij vele stuks die al in mijn rek hangen. Ik mocht in de winkel alle patroondelen puzzelen op de stof zodat ik nauwelijks overschot zou hebben. Heel fijn want bij duurdere stoffen loopt 20cm extra al gauw op. Zeker als je er nadien niets meer mee kan doen. Bij De Stoffenkamer hebben ze daar geen probleem mee. Ze denken mee na over hoe je je stof zo efficiënt mogelijk kan knippen ❤️ Niet overal zijn ze zo behulpzaam. Had a lovely girls' day out to Brighton last weekend🩵. I keep spotting kantha jackets on Etsy, so when I saw this kantha throw, I knew I'd found The One 😄. I wasted no time in cutting it up 😯😘! I'm loving the Hong Kong binding for the gorgeous insides, but for the sleeve seams, I just folded them in and stitched them down. A long time in planning and much deliberation later and my Hovea Jacket is finally complete! And I absolutely love it! Been collecting 4.5” squares for a good few years, then decided to go with only 4 poplin fabrics that I liked together. I drew out a 12 graded to 16 hip but had last minute wobbles and traced out a 14 graded to a little over an 18 hip instead. I also shortened the pocket by 1.5” as I wanted to be able to comfortably get my hands in there. It feels more practical for me but it does lose a little in the design. I’m so glad I sized up as I really like the oversized look and it’s also a bit future proof. After trying stitch in the ditch and failing to catch the binding successfully, and quite a bit of tricky unpicking later, I resigned myself to sewing the inside binding by hand, a close up of that in my last photo. That part took around 6 hours and I can’t quite believe how quickly it seemed to go by. Maar ik kocht gewatteerde stof die al een voering had. Ik moest dus heel goed nadenken hoe ik mijn naden zou afwerken. Ik maakte een soort Engelse naden en haalde daarvoor telkens een strookje wattine van tussen de stoflaagjes. Sommige naden werkte ik af met biaislint. Het vestje is dus aan twee kanten draagbaar. Days 51-58. Last holiday catch-up block. A week of gentle sunny Eastery days with family & friends. Excusing myself from regular 'must-do' practice hasn't meant it hasn't happened - lots of creativity along the way, especially in studio organising & projects with the ever inventive Twirls. By way of project journalling, here's the latest of my #stitchsketchbook pages finished this week - the scraps from the scraps of my quilt hoodie from a few weeks ago. And the hoodie itself, out & about again this weekend, accompanying a rather marvellous quilted jacket that I made for my rather marvellous mother for Christmas - a commissioned challenge to sew her a Japanese style collared jacket in a selection of provided Japanese print cotton pieces. It was a piecing blocking challenge indeed, and saw weeks of P&C style thinking (!) but it turned out well and was done and wrapped by early November. This month we invited our staff to select their favorite color of Cruise Washed Linen from @LadyMcElroyFabrics and a pattern from the shop to sew a garment of their choice. Molly made the #MNHoveaJacket from @MeganNielsenPatterns in Cruise Washed Linen – Ivory. Please congratulate Molly on her first successful quilting project with no crying or swearing! Molly had a lot of fun making this Hovea Jacket entirely her own. She chose Ivory Cruise Washed Linen for the outside and used a vintage bedsheet for the lining. She extended the center front so it overlapped, and added a row of buttons. She also decided to make rounded front patch pockets to echo the soft curves of the hem. By sewing all the bias tape binding down flat, she was able to make the jacket fully reversible! Twinning is winning Uit de restjes van de mooie Kantha deken ging nog een gilet voor Cato. Kunnen we twinnen ❤️ Ik gebruikte de all time favourite Ester&Ebbe en paste deze aan. De onderkant nam ik 8cm in en de okselgaten heb ik met 2x 1cm omgezoomd nadat ik deze ongeveer een centimeter wijder knipte. De randen werkte ik allemaal af met de zelfkant van de deken met een mooi borduurpatroon er in. En uiteraard weer de flat felled seams om de binnenkant mooi af te werken. The second Hovea coat I’ve made, this one out of a dreamy Melton wool, unlined and not quilted this time. So warm and soft, and the deep pockets are amazing. I totally love this fabric from @surgefabricshop and the pattern, and the pure pleasure of making amazing things with my sewing machine. ps, I am 15 weeks post-op and am grateful that my mobility has improved so much. This past week allowed me to get on my bike, start some basic running, and even boulder a teeny tiny bit. All of it very bite sized chunks because my leg muscle is pretty weak; the next few months are all about strengthen/rest/repeat. Heute ist schon der zweite Termin von #zusammennäherinnen @beswingtesallerlei - zum Thema Zuschnitt und die ersten Nähte. Also zugeschnitten und genäht habe ich schon. Allerdings bislang nur die einzelnen Patchwork Blöcke. Die Anleitung von @shannonfraserdesigns ist super verständlich und übersichtlich, was den Zuschnitt und das zusammennähen der Blöcke einfach gestaltet. Allerdings ist es trotzdem sehr zeitintensiv. Gequiltet habe ich bislang nur die Taschen. Im nächsten Schritt wird das Rückenteil gequiltet. Weiter geht es bei den #zusammennäherinnen . Viel ist seit letzter Woche noch nicht passiert, da mir ja noch Stoff gefehlt hat. Den hab ich mittlerweile und habe gestern ca. 11 Meter Schrägband aus einem halben Meter Stoff hergestellt. Die komplette Jacke wird damit eingefasst. Ich hab es sogar schon geschafft die Tascheneingriffe und die Unterkanten der Taschen einzufassen sowie die Taschen auf die Vorderteile zu steppen. Es liegt noch ganz schön viel Arbeit vor mir. Tools - you don't need many, but the ones you have should make your quilting easier and more enjoyable ✨️ Take the humble thimble. I hated thimbles in the beginning. In fact, I disliked any form of hand sewing period. It was wanting my binding to have a nice clean finish that encouraged me to learn how to do a proper blind stitch. That's where I discovered having the right thimble makes hand sewing so much more enjoyable. I used to use those metal ones - bleurgh. Not only were they uncomfortable, but my finger sweat like crazy 💦 Then I found the rubber/silicone ones, which were definitely better. It wasn't until I discovered leather ones that I really got into my hand sewing groove. The moral of the story is to keep searching until you find the right fit for you! Kantha jasje Een van mijn doelen dit jaar was het naaien van een jasje voor mijzelf. Met deze Kantha deken zag ik het helemaal voor me. Het was even puzzelen met alle lijnen, kleurverlopen, structuren en oneffenheden in de deken om er een jasje uit te halen wat niet volledig at random is geknipt. Helaas gaat knippen niet zo 'economisch' dan. Het patroon heeft eigenlijk kleinere zakken als je de cropped versie maakt, maar ik heb de zakken hoger geplaatst zodat ze niet in de zoom mee naar binnen worden gevouwen, anders vind ik ze te klein. De zoom heb ik precies in de naad van de zak gestikt (stitch in de ditch). Ook wilde ik een zelfkant van de stof gebruiken aan de zak zodat de gestikte rand terugkomt. Hierdoor is de kleine kromming in de zak wel een rechte lijn geworden. Ik maakte een ongevoerd jasje omdat de binnenkant ook gezien mag worden. Ik heb flat felled seams genaaid in plaats van biaisband, dat vond ik mooier. Mittlerweile sind wir schon bei Woche 3 von #zusammennäherinnen @beswingtesallerlei und es geht nur langsam voran. Mittlerweile habe ich alle Teile gequiltet und zugeschnitten. Ich Nächsten Schritt müsste ich eigentlich ein Schrägband zuschneiden für alle Kanten. Allerdings hab ich damals beim Stoffe kaufen ganz vergessen das ich dafür ja auch entsprechende Stoffe brauche. Also muss ich jetzt erstmal Stoff nachbestellen bevor ich weiter machen kann.
