New dress and a photobombing cat! Last Saturday in our little village we had a day of commemoration for the crew of a Wellington bomber which crashed 80 years ago killing all crew. The plane missed the school and church but sadly all 6 men died doing this rather than bail out & save themselves. Families of those brave men travelled from Australia,New Zealand & Ireland for a day of remembrance. There was a church service with local bigwigs and RAF ones, then an afternoon tea. In the evening was a 1940s event with a trio of ladies singing songs from the era. The hall was packed with loads of us dressed up too but I forgot to get pics then,probably just as well as my Victory Rolls were pathetic- thank goodness for the hairnet. 🧵🪡 Sew Over It 1940s Tea Dress 🪡🧵 (Ad/PR 💕) this is my first @SewOverItLondon 1940s tea dress and I love it! I've had this pattern in the collection for a long time and just haven't gotten around to making one. I knew that I wanted to try this pattern out when I received this lovely fabric from @minervadotcom I have loved Atelier Brunette fabric for a while and how beautiful the prints are. This fabric has a lovely vintage feel to it, which felt like a lovely pairing to the vintage style pattern! The fabric is lovely and soft and has a lovely drape. It does feel thicker than viscose challis so I do find that this creases less which makes it perfect for work and getting back and two work on the train. I made a size 10 in the tea dress and found that it fitted quite well, although there was a bit of room in the waist. I didn't adjust this as the extra room is perfect when sitting behind my desk all day. I was a little worried how this style or dress would look on me as it's a style I've not worn before. However, I was really happy with the style and the fit! I am definitely going to add some more into my wardrobe. I may add a cotton lawn version into my summer wardrobe and lengthen the skirt slightly (I prefer skirts below the knee in my summer wardrobe). I am also thinking of adding a more spring colour as the lighter days roll in. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how well this pattern turned out and how well the fabric and pattern paired. I made some little fabric covered buttons for the front, which has to be one of the most fiddly things I’ve ever done! This was a really easy pattern to follow, and I loved how it turned out. As you can see, apart from eliminating the peak-a-boo I also changed the skirt for a panelled one, using the skirt of the #SOI1940sTeaDress, leaving one of the centre seams partiaĺLY open to create a slit. If you think it looks more like the @sewlovepatterns Chloe dress, you’re right and if you’re going for the same look, definitely go with the Chloe. But when I got the Joelle, the Chloe wasn’t out yet. The fabric is a lightweigt polycotton suiting from my local fabric shop. … [CZ] Tak tady máme upravený střih na šaty Joelle od #SewLovePatterns v celé své kráse. [ENG] Like the previous pattern I have shown you, with this green dress I took a pattern and through several modifications transformed it into exactly what I wanted. That’s the beauty of sewing, anything is possible! The basis for this pattern was the @sewoveritlondon Emma dress, because I wanted a ponte dress with princess seams, which would replicate my beloved RTW dress I’ve had for more than a decade and it shows 🙈 I widened and deepened the neckline at the front and made it v-shaped at the back. In hindsight, instead of just deepening the neckline, I should have also pinched a bit out, as the neckline is slightly gapey now. I’ll remember for next time. I also omitted the zipper, as the ponte does not need it. I wanted a wider skirt, so I used the panelled #SOI1940sTeaDress one, and matched the panels to the princess seams. Because green and magenta is my fave colour combo, I’ve been wearing it with my @tailoressstudio #WhitmoorCardigan

I am an amateur sewer, and that's okay. Sometimes I have to remind myself of that, because sewing Instagram is still social media and is still therefore 90% people posting carefully curated images of their most perfect moments, but every few months I get intimidated by everyone else's skills and feel like I can't possibly post my very average sewing, so I disappear from the app for ages and convince myself I can never come back. All of which is to say, hi, I'm back after a few months' hiatus. If - probably when - I make this dress again, I know I need to lengthen the bust pieces so the waistband sits at the right place (I'm 5'9" and an E cup so it's really no surprise the seam runs across rather than under my bust), narrow the back which gapes a bit on me at the top, and probably make sure I sew the buttons on less wonkily, but I wore this all day yesterday and felt cute in it despite the flaws. Sometimes it's okay to just follow a pattern as-is and accept that it will be an imperfect but wearable fit. It’s been a minute since I’ve posted something. I’ve had a few projects on the go but not finished anything. But when @sewoveritlondon put some of their vintage dresses on sale for the jubilee I knew I had to try this #1940steadress This was made in a very cheap viscose challis I bought from @minervadotcom as a wearable toile. Unfortunately the challis is poor quality which made things difficult and it was falling apart in my hands but it worked for a toile, the dress in total only cost me approximately £15 to make. Based on the measurements guide I made a size 18 but it was hanging off me so I’ve taken it in quite a bit in the back seams and at the waist. Still a little big, especially in the sleeves but I’m happy with the overall finish. Next time I’d definitely add pockets though!! I’ve been making a number of tops lately, so have gone back to making dresses! 👗 Starting with the @sewoveritlondon 1940’s Tea Dress. I really love the silhouette of this dress and it’s been on my ‘to sew’ list for ages! The construction of the dress was fairly simple to follow, I did have issues with the sizing - which surprised me for a Sew Over It pattern. With it being a tea dress you expect it to be fitted around the bodice, but the finished measurement sizes seemed small. Normally I’m a size 8-10 with Sew Over It, but going on the finished measurements I opted for a size 10 bust, graded to 12 waist. Well it turned out HUGE! Whilst my fabric has some give to it, I don’t think it stretched out when sewing since all the pieces matched up. Luckily I just had to take in the side seams (and not any of the bodice seams 😅) so it wasn’t a massive deal breaker - you can see how much I’ve taken in, on the last photo. I’m really pleased with the end result, and love a dress that you can swish around in and this dress definitely fits in that category! I’ll be making more of these in the future - and it will be much easier, as I’ve already modified my pattern pieces based on the fitting adjustments I had to make! 💗 The second of my #makenine2021, 1940s style 💗 Please welcome my new favourite dress! I'm so proud of the fit on this one and this fabric is honestly so soft and perfect for it. I've always loved 1940s fashion so when I first saw this @sewoveritlondon pattern, I knew I had to make it 😍 It wasn't an intentional #memadevalentine2021 but I think it fits the theme quite nicely 💗 I made the size 10 based on my measurements but would probably make a size down next time (I will definitely be making it again!) because I had to adjust the bodice and sleeves quite a bit.
