This one is made out of a printed cotton broderie anglais I picked up at the Stitch Festival in London in March. I had to make the circle skirt in panels due to narrow fabric which meant I’ve added pockets, as well as adding the bias cut sleeve cuff. Making these mockups to test out fabric and pattern pairings used to take me actual hours - this took about a minute on @stash_hub . I'm sure it would be less if I actually had the app and already had my fabrics and patterns uploaded! This is the next thing I'm planning to sew for myself - a Sew Over It Penny Dress. Hey friends 👋 Are you still there? It’s been a minute - five years to be precise! 😅 I never stopped sewing, but I just couldn’t find the motivation to post. I’ve really missed it and hope I can ease my way back into it again. A lot has happened, and having my son means most of my #memade clothes don’t fit me anymore 🥲 So now I’m working my way back to a handmade wardrobe that actually fits after being stuck between wearing tiiiiight pre-pregnancy memades or RTW. This time, I want to be more mindful with what I make. Less quantity, more quality. When I first started sewing, I got swept up in all the cool patterns and pretty fabrics without thinking much about how the finished pieces would hold up over time or match my personal style. I have switched to a smaller capsule wardrobe. I started my first capsule project in 2020 (see previous post), and now I have one capsule per season (summer, fall, winter, and spring). My goal is to keep each one under 30 items and to reuse as many pieces as possible across seasons. My latest make for the spring and summer capsules is this maxi button-down skirt. It’s based on the skirt from the @sewoveritlondon Penny Dress pattern #soipennydress . I adjusted the length, added front panels, and drafted the waistband to fit my measurements. The buttons are recycled from an old shirt. It’s beautifully flowy but still has a bit of weight to it. It's definitely going to be a capsule staple 💛 What have you all been making lately? Excuse the creases but I suddenly remembered I hadn't taken photos of this dress! 7 year old and her photography to the rescue 😂 This is the @sewoveritlondon Penny dress in a teal viscose from the depths of my stash (no idea where I bought it!) This is the size 18 (small block) with a 3cm high round back adjustment and 3.5cm FBA. Ideally would have used the larger D Cup block but I had the paper pattern from a magazine. I omitted a bust dart and instead rotated the extra into the shoulder gathers which I really like. I've missed a couple of Me Made May days - sometimes I just don't get the chance (nor inclination) to photograph... This was today, which was worth a photo as this dress doesn't get much love as I felt it was too short (and NO POCKETS!!!). It had a deep hem so I lengthened it as much as I could (at least an inch, maybe two) and now it feels better (although doesn't look much longer than the insert pic from 2022). #MeMadeMay2025 #SOIPennyDress

✨Me Made May Day 18 ✨ also slightly@bleary eyed this early morning … I am not a natrually early riser and a run of crack-of-dawn starts is getting to me 😆 all totally worth it however. Right at this moment this summery dress and cardigan combo looks pretty optimistic for the day ahead but the sun is due to come out! . This is an old old dress but k love it. It’s the @sewoveritlondon Penny Dress and it was among the first patterns I felt confident to do on my own as a beginner dressmaker. The vintage style and the and the grow-on sleevelet are 👌 . I really can’t recall where I got the fabric now but I know I didn’t have enough and had to make the pockets from a pillowcase and cart-wheel the skirts this where you add a corner to one side of the skirt where the fabric isn’t wide enough for the full curve. . Paired here with a little green cashmere cardigan. Also old, from @boden . I don’t know if they still do this little cropped style, it’s a big favourite, I have three 🤓If I’d had a bright orange one to go with the @goodwoofdogs colours I would have done! Another sewing retreat make from the weekend. I'm calling this my 90s dress. This lovely rayon from @thesewinglair was perfect for a ditsy floral dress inspired by the 1990s. The pattern is a mash up as I couldn't find the perfect button-through dress pattern. Bodice is the Penny dress by @sewoveritlondon, skirt is the Bonnie skirt by @stylearc More hacks: 🙌 I didn't elasticate the back of the skirt, I added side ties instead for shaping. 🙌 I extended the bodice facing all the way through to the skirt. 🙌 And I didn't sew a single button hole! Memade may: day 13 I finished sewing this dress a couple of weeks ago and all I had left were the buttons. But the whole thing was a bit of a trial as I had limited fabric and I think I made the bodice a size too small. So I set it aside unfinished. Last night I finally got my snaps and press out. I finished this make a couple of weeks ago and forgot to post on my grid! It’s the Sew Over It Penny Dress, but with the tie detail which is part of the add on pack you can purchase! I used a fabric from Birmingham rag market and it sewed up lovely, I did have to shorten the measurement of the elastic to ensure the skirt sat at the right height. #fangirlalert , I’ve just found out that my favourite fabric shop @sewanonymousofficial and the company that inspired me to start sewing vintage style clothes @sewoverit are collaborating! More than 8 years ago, Sew over it and @lisacomfort drew me into their shop in Islington for a beginners course, I made a bag and cushion cover, I signed up immediately for the beginners circle skirt course and after that I was hooked. I have almost all of their patterns which are among some of the most user friendly I have found and I often go back to them over and over. My favourite is probably the #soivintageshirtdress which was one of my first makes from a true 70s deadstock fabric. I still wear it now. More recently I made a beautiful #soipennydress in a gorgeous dashwood fabric I bought at Sew Anonymous. Now I make clothes for my babies from the @poppyandjazz range which go up to age 7 now I think. I’m thrilled with this and can’t wait to see where it goes. Starting with the positives, here are two recent sews that went really well #newlook6680 is a knit mock wrap dress which has the wrapover top and sleeve pieces in one. I made version B which has the wrapover at the back as well as at the front in viscose jersey. I made a mash up of the #soipennydress with the skirt from #soibonniedress from a 1.6m remnant, so there wasn't enough fabric for the circle skirt. Now swipe to see two other sews where I had "issues". Both are first time makes for these patterns so perhaps they are just my wearable toiles! The #deeranddoeopium pattern was a Christmas present from Rosie. I used a lovely Italian wool blend coating fabric from @jennystitchesfabrics but I went wrong somehow on the collar and it's not lying properly. I have steamed and pressed and pulled it when I should have unpicked it and had another try. I love the pocket details and the magnetic snap closures, so I will definitely be making it again. And I made a maxi length #newlook6692 in viscose and I had to sew and resew the bodice over and again to get a better fit. It's still not great and some seams are a bit lumpy and wobbly as a result of me trying to make adjustments without unpicking it all. I also tried a tip I saw about adding boning to a square neckline to stop gaping but I don't think it has worked that well with this fabric. #isew #dressmaking #handmadewardrobe #sewistsofinstagram #patternhacking

I had some cotton lawn left over from my #soipennydress, so rather than stuffing it in my scrap bag and forgetting about it, I used it to make the #soiknickers. They are not perfect, I found the elastic part a little fiddly but I have another pair ready to sew up so hoping those turn out a little neater. Final week of MeMadeMay and it features a lot of new makes. First up is this fresh off the machine @sewoveritlondon Georgie dress hacked to be a maxi length. It’s made in this fabulous deadstock Farm Rio fabric I got from @rainbowfabrickilburn. Using one of their brand ambassadors codes including postage this cost less than £25 which is a far cry from the £250 you’d spend on one from their shop. The fabric is so soft and silky, it feels so lovely to wear but also day appropriate. Sun screen is good but it doesn’t replace clothing for surety! Sew nine plans 2021 This is the first time I actually put this list together cos I usually don’t plan for these things nor very good with sticking to plans...but we’ll see.... Actually, to put 9 on the list is an ambitious one. Since I’m quite stubborn when it comes to getting that perfect fit, I usually do at least one toile before the cutting into good fabric. So to sew 9 means to sew at least sew 18. I’ve already completed a #mnrivertop, and a #soipennydresshack this year...does it count? Another goal I have this year is to sew from my fabrics I already have. Here’s my first ever @sewoveritlondon Florence dress in a jolly viscose from @poundfabrics It’s an almost perfect fit but next time I’ll add a cm or two to the bodice length - I made the same adjustment when I made the Penny dress and it worked well then. Hmmmm, so on reflection of my #makenine2022 it does not appear to have gone very well. From the number completed it doesn't seem like I made very much in the year but my wardrobe seems to be showing something different. I think it is time for a clear out. Below are a list of the plans I had and the current status of them: 1. Nina lee - Camden. I have cut out the fabric and it is ready to sew. 2. Friday Pattern Company - Heather Blazer Fabric has been picked but just need to conquer the cutting out! 3. Deer and Doe - Sirocco Complete and loving it! 4. Sew Over it - Niamh skirt Cut out and it is ready to sew. 5. Grainline Studio - Thayer Finished and it has become a staple jacket since then 6. Tilly and the buttons - Nora cardigan Problems were had and posted at the time... 7. Sew Over It - Libby Shirt Cut out and ready to sew. 8. Simplicity McCalls - 1887 I made shorts initially in this pattern and wear them a lot in the summer, I have sewed up the trousers but don't like the fit so haven't actually worn them. 9. Hi hi! Pattern insider here sharing my Penny add on 😊 from @sewoveritlondon. Better late than never; First with my kiddo coming down with a fever, followed by cranky internet issues. I made my Penny tie front blouse in white double gauze with the main idea of matching with my Niamh skirt, But then again, I'm finding that a white blouse pretty much matches with everything, so that's a win! I'm wearing my Penny tie front blouse with Niamh skirt. With jeans ( of course ) or over a strappy dress on days when I don't feel comfy showing my upper arms or when I'm too lazy to bother with bra straps 😅 I'm in between sizes 10 n 12; this blouse is a straight size 12. I did omit the interfacing cuz I wanted the blouse soft, floppy n casual. Not because I dislike ironing interfacing.
