I think spring might finally be here! 🎉👏☀️ I really hope the sun is here to stay so I can wear all my pretty dresses! This one is a @sewoveritlondon Marguerite dress made with viscose challis from @minervadotcom. I have tried to make a Marguerite dress before and been unable to get the fit right but I’m quite pleased with this one. The fabric was gifted to me as part of the Minerva brand ambassador programme. Impossible to get good pictures when we never get any sunlight 🫠 but I couldn’t wait to share this finally finished Treeline sweater! Color is most accurate in the last pic in outdoor light. I have tried this yarn (deep stash BT Shelter) with THREE different sweater patterns now, and it finally came together this time. (Well, after knitting the whole yoke, frogging it, and knitting a different size again, at least.) I added some purling detail on the side seams & down the full sleeve, and my sizing is a mix of sizes 1, 2, 3 and 4 at different places in the garment. The sleeves are a tiny bit tight right now, but I know from experience that Shelter grows on wearing, and I didn’t want them to end up too loose. I also moved the sleeves toward the back so the back has about 2/3 as many stitches as the front, and did a few decrease rounds in the back only to keep it from getting too tent-y, which tends to be a problem for me with round yoke sweaters. Super happy with the fit! My #TopNine for the year according to Instagram likes. I do enjoy looking back at my year in this way, although it always amuses me how weird the algorithm is that certain makes make the cut and others that I thought would be more popular don't. We have a few themes this year. I made my first #DDMagnolia dress for my mum and then hacked it to make 2 #Magnolodie (crossed with the #ClosetCoreElodie) dresses, one as a proof of concept and one for my brother's wedding. My brother's wedding waistcoat is a very welcome late addition to the grid having only shared details about it last week. I embraced red this year, with a red spotted #SOIMargueriteDress and another #HinterlandDress in red linen. This was also the post that debuted my daisy tattoo. Deep pink, my favourite colour, is a continued theme in my makes, with my wedding outfit and my chunky cord #SewingSonny jacket. I really must find more ways to wear this this year. Finally we have two random additions. The #CoolCrafting Christmas surprise from last Christmas, and the #SOIRubySkirt I made for a lovely friend. It has been a very good sewing year. This is the Marguerite dress from @sewoveritlondon #soimargueritedress I have to say, I have a bit of a love hate relationship with this one. It certainly wasn’t an easy sew! Firstly, when I bought the pattern I hadn’t appreciated how much hand sewing was involved. 🤯🤯🤯 And I really am not a fan of doing it, I’m just not very neat or good at it. 😬😬😬 So I basically decided to avoid doing any at all by lining the bodice and omitting the sleeve piece (which looked so weird and complicated to me anyway). That way I was able to machine everything 😀😀😀 The waistband I attached by topstitching to secure it together. Secondly, I had a couple of big issues. The back was huge and bagged out so I ended up taking out the zip, cutting out some of the fabric and then reinserting it. I also did a full zip to the top. I know others had this issue so it makes me wonder if there is an issue with the pattern drafting 🤔🤔 Also I found the instructions so weird and unnecessarily complex - there are far easier ways to insert the pocket bags and the zip than the methods given in the instructions. So I did that myself too. I was pretty chuffed with myself that I knew a better way of doing things - I couldn’t have done that a couple of years ago. Having said all that, I really love the finished dress. It has a vintage vibe. The waistband coupled with all the gathers means it’s super flattering. So having panned it, I’m actually making another one, with some tweaks and revisions to make the fit better (even with altering the zip, it still comes up a tad large on me). Nsturally fabric is @libertyfabrics which I bought from @clothkits earlier this year. It’s an older print from 2021 called ‘Going for Gold’ and it was released for the Tokyo Olymics. The print features the five debut sports introduced to the Tokyo Olympics; Baseball, Sport climbing, Skateboarding, Surfing and Karate. I bought it to mark the Paris Olympics but alas didn’t get it done in time!

I can not understate how good it is to be back wearing @sewoveritlondon Marguerite dresses after a year and a half of stretchy and breast-feeding friendly garments! Weaning means I can now go longer without feeding, so options for dresses to go out are much more varied. Marguerite was always a T&T for me, so there are a lot of them in my wardrobe (most of which are still a little too tight at the waist to wear yet, but give me a few weeks 🤣). This is the @sewoveritlondon Marguerite dress - I love it because it reminds me of the gorgeous dresses the main actress wore in Hundred Foot Journey. Fabric is a pretty lawn from Spoonflower. My only complaint is that this lawn was really hard to get my hand sewing needle through - not something I’ve found with Liberty lawns. I also had a big mistake where I had to size up due to the waistband hitting higher on my rib cage than I anticipated. Tears were shed, but ultimately I switched to this fabric, which I liked better than the original. #soimargueritedress #soimarguerite

🪻🧵 Sew Over It Margarite Dress🧵🪻 A few months ago I finally used this beautiful @SewOverItLondon Busy Blossoms Cotton Poplin that has been in my stash for a while. I decided to make a Marguerite Dress and absolutely love it! It's been sat in my wardrobe waiting for the summer weather to come in. I didn't have enough room in my honeymoon wardrobe to take it away, but as soon as we get our next lot of sunny weather this dress will definitely be one I reach for first. I've not made a Marguerite Dress for a few years, but looking back on my makes list it jumped out at me. The previous dresses sadly do not fit me anymore but I know that I like the style and the gathered waist has a flattering fit. I made a straight size 10 and found that this fit me quote well. However, I will add a few cms to the waistband next time as it can be a little tight after a meal! Overall, I really love this dress and will be looking to add more into my wardrobe! I made the Sew Over It London 'Marguerite' dress for my daughter last autumn. It originally had the keyhole back, but although it looked lovely, it wasn't terribly practical with the air conditioning at work. So I altered the back to put a longer zip in, and I also removed a little of the fullness in the region of the shoulder blades. It meant the pattern matching has suffered a little, but it will be a more practical dress for her needs. My #austasjöensweater is finished! 🥰 I still haven’t blocked it because all my pins are packed and in a container headed across the Atlantic, but it’s wearable pre-blocking, and I think it’s the most beautiful thing I’ve made yet! The design is by @wynja in her book Stickat til vardags, and my stripey version is inspired by @tantcilla ‘s, which literally made my jaw drop when I saw it. The yarn is @dererumnatura Ulysse in Quartz and Bruyère for the main colors with Genêt, Argile, Figue, Eucalyptus, and Amarante as contrast colors. This yarn was every bit as dreamy to work with as I hoped after 3+ years of coveting it before placing an order. And I have plenty left over to make a cowl or mittens or other colorwork accessories ☺️ This pattern is currently only in Swedish and in a book that’s hard to get your hands on, but I hope it’ll be released in English & other languages someday because it’s a fantastic one and deserves as wide an audience as possible! Made a dress! I love tartan - it's a little bit Christmas, a little bit grown up. This light weight woven wool blend had been sitting in my stash for ages, and it jumped out over the weekend shouting to become a (4th) #soimargueritedress. I had this dress pattern cut out and was going to make it with the lise tailor fabric. But I read loads of reviews with people having issues with the back gaping. So I made the Isla wrap dress with the nice fabric and picked up this cotton linen in the clearance section at Spotlight to make a wearable toile. Because the fabric is see through I thought I’d teach myself to line it too. There’s lots I’m happy about with this make, I love how the lining makes the inside so neat! I basically made the bodice twice then sewed the fabric and lining right sides together at the neck. I then basted the fabric and lining together at the side seams and treated it as one piece for the rest of the make. Unfortunately I had the same issue with the gaping back. It was so bad the hook and eye kept coming undone. I overcame it by overlapping the back by 3cm each side and putting in a button. It doesn’t sit perfectly but at least it won’t undo! There was quite a bit of hand sewing with this dress, which I didn’t hate as much as I thought I would! Overall I’m pleased with how it looks, but I’m not sure I’ll make another one. I wore the second make from last weekend's #SewBeds to a work do today (a boat on the Thames!) and I felt really good. I love this fabric. It's just a viscose, but it feels much more special than it is, and I think the colour is fabulous. I felt so cheerful today in bright red. The pattern I had a couple of issues with, mostly the sleeve cuffs just not making sense to me. I will do them differently if I make this again. This was a work in progress when I photographed it, as I took it to my daughter's house to finish it. Sew Over It's 'Marguerite' dress, in Liberty Tana Lawn. This is Lodden, one of my favourite Liberty prints. It was a satisfying sew, and the main alterations I did were to lengthen the bodice (daughter is tall) and take some out of the back neck. Oh, and I closed the keyhole neckline with a rouleau loop and vintage button, rather than a hook and eye. It fits her really well. 🪡Finished!🪡 This dress turned out exactly as I imagined it! (See a few posts back for the RTW inspiration.) The Marguerite dress is one of my all time favorite patterns and I’m already head over heels for this version. 😍 Details: Fabric: viscose from @pretty_mercerie (sold out now, but other colorways available) Pattern: @sewoveritlondon #soimargueritedress Modifications: My standard Marguerite pattern is a size 8 for the shoulders and bust and graded to a size 10 at the waist and hips. It is also narrowed in the upper back and the curve of the neckline is smoothed out a bit. For this version: 🧵I left off the arm cuffs and tried binding the edges with bias tape. It worked well, but with this floaty viscose the bias tape gives the armholes more structure that makes them stick out a bit. I actually kind of like it on this version but might not like it on all versions. 🧵I added a button placket to the center front neckline using the @threadtheorydesigns #strathconahenley pattern piece and instructions. It worked perfectly! It was only once I came to adding the buttons that I realized they were on the wrong side because it is a men’s pattern. 😅 That doesn’t bother me though. Plus, they aren’t necessary to use since there is a zipper closure at the back. But they are fully functional! (It didn’t even occur to me to just do a faux placket!) 🧵I installed the zipper all the way up to the neckline, rather than having the keyhole opening.
