My first coat, loads of pieces and welt pockets All of which would be OK, especially as there was a great video tutorial they did for the pockets but I made things harder by having a big break from sewing it, losing a pattern piece and the fabric not being the easiest to sew. I made the @sewoveritlondon #SOICocoonCoat in this lush boiled wool from @minervadotcom It was a bit of a nightmare trying to capture the colour accurately on camera. It's a gorgeous green/turquoise and it is lovely. 💚 I bought the viscose to line it from @thefabricboutiqueuk I was really happy when it arrived as the little pops of teal in the print matched perfectly with my outer fabric. Always a bit of a gamble when buying online but Emma does really good pictures and videos to try and accurately capture the colours in the fabric. It really helped! Sometimes I sew. And even more occasionally I get Simon to play the role of good insta hubby and take some photos of what I’ve made. Today was one of those days. So expect a few new posts from me after quite the break (because… kids. Not because I wanted a rest). Here I am showing off my pink coat that I finished a while back. It’s my second coat made using the Cocoon coat pattern from @sewoveritlondon. It is lined in a beautiful floral sateen and has welted pockets 💕 #soicocooncoat

Day 2: It was cold and wet, (although we didn’t see any of the flooding which was reported)so we decided to stick to sightseeing that didn’t require good visibility to be able to enjoy it. 1 & 2) I wore my pink #jarrahsweater (lengthened) sweatshirt and black #freerangeslacks as I knew these would be cosy. I topped it off with my #soicocooncoat and was good to go. 3) We found an amazing Diner and the breakfasts there were my favourite meal of the day! 4) Times Square. We weren’t allowed on the red stairs because of the rain, but we went back later in the week and took more photos. It was fab to see this IRL having seen it in so many of the films we’ve watched. 5 & 6) Grand Central This is the most beautiful station I’ve ever been to. I loved it here. The architecture and all the finer details were just stunning. 7 & 8) It was so surreal to be walking around and see such iconic buildings just in front of you! The Chrysler building and the Empire State Building are 2 of my favourites as I love Art Deco design. 9) Macys had beautiful window displays for Spring. 10) I was fed up with getting soaked so I ‘treated’ myself to a rain poncho (very stylish!) and thought well, if I’m going to wear a plastic bag with a hood it may as well be bright pink! 😂 (& none of the family disowned me, surprisingly)! #SewOver50 #SewOver50April #memadeeveryday #wearwhatmakesyouhappy #sewbeds #janomeuk

So close to finishing this winter coat. I’m pretty pleased with the collar and how it has all come together, although I think I should have probably made a smaller size. I deliberated for ages about which size would be best - having measurements in both the size 12 and 14 column, and I’m not convinced I was right to go with 14! Having said that, it might just be the dropped shoulder that doesn’t suit me well. I just have to finish a bit of hand stitching of the lining and then I’m done. . I pinched the ribbon around the label idea from @birdy_sew_obsessed, otherwise my label is a bit scratchy around the edges. . Bit of a jump up in skill level, but next up I’m having a go at the #sewoverit #cocooncoat. The pockets took me a good 4 hours, but I think they’re in the right place (and functional!) and look ok. As always when I’m dressmaking, I checked out @birdy_sew_obsessed highlights for extra tips and tricks to get a professional finish - in this case I’m slip stitching down the seam allowance for a lovely flat finish and adding some extra facing to the pocket bags. . One pair of jeans, many different looks. How versatile is a pair of black jeans? 😎 It goes with all of my coats and jackets, here are just some of them. Today I finished my parakeet green @sewoveritlondon Cocoon Coat, a pattern that I have been meaning to try out for such a long time and I’m glad I finally did! As coat-making goes, I think this is a pretty simple project, with such lovely simple yet stylish features and perfect for a vibrant block colour fabric. The outer fabric is a wool-mix brush coating from @fabricgodmother and the lining is the most dreamiest rayon from @rubystarsociety which gives the coat a bit of a heavier and more structured feel. 🦜💚🦜💚🦜

#mendingmonday and I’m retro fitting a new lining to the #soicocooncoat I made for @theliliesofthefield back in about 2017. At the time I used some grey silk gifted to me by my sister which had lain in a drawer since she bought it on a trip to China in the early 1980s. Sadly that fabric has now perished and Clare had a ripping time taking it out of the coat! After a gentle handwash of this woollen coat, I unpicked and remnants of the lining and also the pocket bags and have cut out new lining from a green tencel fabric from @rainbowfabrickilburn which has been in my stash for at least two years. I reinforced the edges of the coat facings with purple bias binding also from my stash and then stitched the lining to give a thin flash of purple, loving the colour nod to #suffragettemovement 💜💚 While I could get access to the facings I refreshed the label loop with another of these cute labels from @craftyclyde because I hope this will be a totally amazing refresh of this coat. BEHOLD! (Or something like that. It is quite early.) My finished #soicocooncoat is coming with me to the #stitchfestival today. Fabric is a gorgeous jacquard from @sistermintaka, lining deadstock viscose from @selvedgeandbolts, pop of raspberry piping from @minervadotcom Really quite pleased with it.

Himself very rarely gets involved in sewing shenanigans, but sometimes you just need a photo of your back… or two. Or three. #toilesandtribulations indeed. Working on the #soicocooncoat, which I knew would need a bit of fitting. I measure about a size 8 in the shoulders, 10 bust, 8 waist and 12 hips, and am 6 inches shorter than their draft height. I cut a 10 to the waist then graded out to the 12 for the first toile. Between toile one and two (pictures 1 and 2 with the pins vs 3) we’ve shortened by 3cm in the bodice (in far more of a straight line than I pinned out here!) just below the armscye, 11cm in the bottom of the coat, taken 3cm out of the CB width and played with the pocket placement (5cm up and then settled for a more conservative 2.5cm). I left the sleeve alone, it hits where I want it. It’s hanging pretty much as I want it on the front *and* back so time for pattern placement then deeeep breath and cut the very special fabric 🙀🙀🙀 #slowsewing #doingitrightforonce #shortarseproblems

Recently I realised that I haven’t made anything dressmaking wise for nearly 9 months! 😵‍💫 I think it’s mostly because I’ve felt out of shape and a bit ‘meh’ and haven’t wanted to invest time in something I’m unlikely to wear but the truth is that I’ve really missed the joy of making things for my own wardrobe and just the creative process in general ✨🫶🏻🥰. I’ve been looking for a new super bright cheery wool coat for a while but none have really taken my fancy and realised this is the perfect opportunity to get back into the groove of things and have opted to make the @sewoveritlondon Cocoon Coat ✂️🪡. I will admit though, an hour on these welt pockets this evening have frazzled my brain, talk about a baptism of fire 😫😅…any tips would be gratefully received!!

This is only the 2nd coat I've ever made and I'm sooo happy with it! This is the #soicocooncoat from @sewoveritlondon and it's surprisingly easy to make! This amazing fabric is from @abakhan_hanley and I'd been eyeing it up for so long before I actually bought it, I'm so glad that I did!

My proudest make for #sew500 is my @sewoveritlondon Cocoon Coat which took me about two years to make! It’s lined and has welt pockets which caused a lot of head scratching and unpicking. I adjusted the pattern so it would wrap over itself rather than just meet at the front but I added too much so ended up removing a slice and having to redo the lining, which wasn’t easy but worth it. I’ve also made a tie belt to put round it as I don’t like it to flap open and allow the cold to get in. I haven’t worn it for a while because it’s not suitable for wet or very cold weather but looking at the forecast I might wear it today!
