Have you seen @sewoverit sparkly new website? They are celebrating their 10th birthday and the new website launched today (bonus points of you can spot me on it!) I thought I’d help the celebrations by sharing some of my favourite Sew Over It patterns I’d made over the last few years: 1. Blue viscose Penny dress. 2. Cotton floral Elsie dress for a wedding with coordinating Coco jacket. 3. The Francine jacket, I made skirt in the same fabric to turn this into a suit. 4. 1940s Wrap Dress in navy crepe. 5. Swiss dot polka dot Kitty dress. 6. Blue stretch velvet Georgie dress. 7. Flocked Ponte Audrey too. 8. Another Penny (it’s a favourite!) 9. A classic Vintage shirt dress in a cotton poplin. Which is your favourite Sew Over It pattern? Happy Birthday @sewoverit Cheers to the next 10 years! #sewoverit #sewoveritlondon #soipennydress #soielsiedress #soifrancinejacket #soi1940swrapdress #soikittydress #soigeorgiedress #soiaudreytop #soivintageshirtdress #sewingismysuperpower #sewersofinstagram

In Episode 270: Corduroy and Velvet, Caroline talked about a Gap jacket from the early aughts that she loved and wore on a trip to Italy. In this week’s episode, we share a voicemail from listener Julia about HER fave green velvet Gap jacket from the early aughts! It inspired Caroline to dig out her photos - check out how adorable she looks! We also found a couple of indie patterns in case our listeners want to make their own beloved velvet jacket. The #AuburnBlazer by @Cashmerette is a great option for mid and larger sizes and the #SOIFrancineJacket by @SewOverItLondon is a great option for smaller to mid sizes!

So, it’s been ages since I’ve posted anything, but I’ve still been sewing away. Here’s my new #soifrancinejacket in cotton plaid from @treadleyardgoods , sleeves widened and lengthened as usual. I thought I’d for sure screw up pattern matching, but I think I managed it pretty well. Fancy touches include full lining (in polka dots because why not), self covered vintage buttons, and buttonholes with my 1960s singer buttonholer attachment. And it’s finally perfect weather to wear it!

Yesterday’s #memademay outfit and one I’ve realised I haven’t shared before 😮 Probably my most complex make ever, I adore this suit but the temperature needs to be just right for me to wear it and last night was perfect: not too cold, not too warm. I used the @sewoveritlondon #soifrancinejacket and #soicigarettepants patterns and the most gorgeous brocade from @maccullochw with pineapples all over it 😍 I might have been slightly overdressed for my local pub but this suit makes me feel amazing, so who cares?! Learning a new skill makes my sewing space look messy, but I love learning new things! I look for information in books, in YouTube videos, websites, … I read, I reread, try out, and probably go to the real project too quickly, knowing I could definitely improve that skill. For now, I’m going to try to master pad stitching the collar and lapels on the Francine jacket from @sewoveritlondon . Very curious about how it will turn out! #soifrancinejacket #soipatterns #padstitching #tailoredjacket #nevernotsewing #learningnewskills #sewingismytherapy #sewingismysuperpower

Mine is not a #makenine2022 - because it never worked for me - but: -first slide: some bottoms I need to sew to fill gaps in my wardrobe/ try new patterns I've bought but not sewn yet: #pantalonsteven by @ose__patterns if it works it can become a good staple; #danipants by @truebias, the same as above; #soitulipskirt @sewoverit many suggested this pattern when I shared a picture of a RTW skirt with pleated front so I decided to give this pattern a second chance (wasn't happy with my first try) and male it in grey wool 'cause I realised I have no grey skirt; #soiavaskirt also @sewoverit a TNT on constant repeat but I want to make some colourful/playful versions; #catlmv @la_maison_victor_fr THE TNT pattern to me, classic trousers with pleats and tapered leg, I need a black wool one; #deelmv also by @la_maison_victor_fr I made a grey tartan version (still haven't showed here) I'm already in love with this pattern and I want a second version (also tartan I think). I also have some jackets/ coats on my sewing list: #villettelmv @la_maison_victor_fr also a TNT I want to make in navy blue: I've had the fabric for more than two years now but postponed making it due to lack of use thanks to virus; @sewoverit #soifrancinejacket; @la_maison_victor_fr #linnalmv the same as for the coat; #heatherblazer @fridaypatterncompany was brought to my attention by @mizmichael and can't stop thinking about it since then. Last but not least, some knitting: I'm about to knit my first #ankersweater sleeves and have a second planned in navy blue (no surprise here) whose wool was a Christmas present. It sounds ambitious, doesn't it?!? But when it comes to sewing, I stop being the usual pragmatic me, and I like to dream BIG 🤣🤣🤣 Have a nice sewing/knitting/crafting year 🍀🍀🍀 P.S. I already have fabric and notions for the majority of these makes, so I hope to keep my sewing investment super low this year.

Went to an absolutely sumptuous wedding yesterday and gave my old @sewoveritlondon Francine jacket a new lease of life. I paired it with a Brora silk dress for an Autumnal look and I think it looks better than it’s original styling which was as a jacket for a maxi skirt suit - swipe to see. Finally, the bride’s dress which was stunning! I thought originally it must have “invisible” straps to keep it up but it was all in the boning. It also had pockets - I know many of you are great fans but I’m not; the bride kept swishing around with her hands in them which certainly helped to show off the acres of beautiful satin! It really was the most glorious dress 💕PS the bridesmaid was in my first tutor group in my NQT year over twenty years ago - we both claimed that neither of us had changed a bit! #sewing #sewoverit #sewover50 #ootd #memadeootd #soifrancinejacket #weddingguest #weddingdress #broracashmere #brora #autumnwedding #ukteacherswhosew

My last project of 2024 was the Francine Jacket from @sewoveritlondon I bought their online course to learn some new tailoring techniques and this was my first attempt using some beautiful fabric I got from @sewmuchtodoshop when they had their shop in Ely. I really enjoyed making this jacket and following along with the video lessons. There are two jacket versions in this pattern - the one I used was the vintage style and then there is also a more contemporary version which I've got plans to make in the New Year. I had a small piece of this gorgeous fabric leftover, so there will definitely be some pink bags in the pipeline for my shop on The British Craft House! #soifrancinejacket #jacketmaking #onlinesewingclass #sewoveritlondon #sewingjackets

New #SOIFrancineJacket I started at the retreat a couple weekends ago. There wasn’t quite enough floral for the lapel, but now that I can see it completed, I think the solid red breaks up the busyness a bit! #aucklandSews #sewNZ #seamworkAstoria #meMadeEveryday

Looking back over my makes I must say this is my proudest. It’s a culmination of different ideas and fabrics that merged unintentionally into this suit. It all started with scraps of viscose which I patchworked together to make lining fabric. I then chose to make the #soifrancinejacket using a wool fabric that I had bought in the @sewoveritlondon sale but never got round to using. The remnant from that project then became the skirt using McCall’s 3830. I spent a long long time calculating and making the pleats. This and the collar are made from a velvet needle cord that I had bought for a different project that never happened. I love this outfit because I never planned to make it and all these fabrics were initially purchased with other projects in mind but this is what they became. #sew500 #sewyourstash #woolsuit #sewyourownwardrobe #winterwardrobe #mccallspatterns #sewwhatyouhave #usewhatyouhave #sustainablesewing

What did I make with my patchwork lining fabric? I combined it with some more fabric from my stash to make a Francine Jacket! The fabric is a super warm wool I bought in a sale at Sew Over It. It’s a bit itchy so I used some velvet cord for the collar. I didn’t initially have any plans to make a suit, but what was I going to do with the scrap of wool I had left? I didn’t want to just stick it back in the cupboard. Not quite long enough for a skirt on its own but with the addition of a row of pleats in the matching velvet cord, voila! Jacket Pattern company: Sew Over It Pattern: #soifrancinejacket Size: 8 body 10 arms Adjustment: narrowed the sleeves at the wrist Skirt Pattern company: McCalls Pattern: 3830 Size: 12 Adjustment: Added a row of pleats to the bottom, made a lining instead of using the facing pieces #mcleanmakes #stashbusting #woolsuit #tailoredsuit #soishowoff #patchwork #scrapbusting #handmadewardrobe #sewyourstash #sewwhatihave

@closetcorepatterns What is the hardest thing I’ve ever sewn? Hard to say. Maybe the tailored jacket I recently finished #soifrancinejacket Or the #fifipyjamas top where I learned to sew mismatched curves (that’s not the term for it, but my brain’s failing me), using French seams, which I’d only done on one previous project. Or maybe the first top I think I ever sewed for myself. I was years away from conquering set-in sleeves, and the facing was wonky so I just cut one out in white and made a lining. I remember really struggling with it and being rather proud when I finished. (And I didn’t prewash the fabric so it inevitably shrank, and it hasn’t fit in years.) Basically any project where I’m pushing myself to learn something new will feel difficult.

Here’s my entry for the amazing #sew500 competition organised by @sewhayleyjane . My proudest make to date is probably this @sewoveritlondon Francine jacket I made about 7 years ago (can’t believe it was that long ago!). I had only been sewing for about 3 years and had mainly made dresses and a few tops up until then. This was my first attempt at tailoring. The light wool fabric was from @fabricsgalorelondon , I can’t remember where the @atelierbrunette fabric I used for the lining was from. I like bright colours and prints. For this garment, I opted for a bright contrasting lining. Many thanks @sewhayleyjane for such a great and generous competition! #soifrancinejacket #atelierbrunette

Sewing dates are lovely! And when you actually make something at said sewing date, you’ll have a memory of it when wearing the item you’ve sewn. On the 30th of September I got invited to come and sew with a few amazing people. Knowing there would be quite some talking (so my focus could be a bit less focused) and I didn’t plan on taking a overlock machine with me, I chose something quite simple. I’m working on recreating a drawing from @marlavonduta and this blouse is inspired by one of the drawings, but that story will be told a bit later! The pattern is a simple button up shirt with a round collar in one piece and poofy sleeves with a cuff. Quite simple, bu#soiflooks cute in this fabric. The fabric is very fine cotton from @kokkafabric , which I bought at @hetmotief.be . Quite happy with this blouse, on to the next part of the bigger project! Pattern: self-drafted with the pattern drafting course of @the_fashion_basement Fabric: light cotton from @kokkafabric , bought at @hetmotief.be Notions: buttons from @toverstof in Melle, bias tape from my stash Skirt: #montanaskirt from @wearinghistory , in dark blue flannel cotton from @destoffenkamer (an older male, but still a favorite) Beret: @theenglishhatter Belt: @ralphlauren Shoes: @memeryshoes Jacket (last picture): #soifrancinejacket from @sewoveritlondon in blue wool (also a previous make) Scarf (last picture): vintage #nevernotsewing #sewingismytherapy #sewingismysuperpower #kokkafabric #destoffenkamer #hetmotief

My entry for #sew500 by @sewhayleyjane. The jacket is a #soifrancinejacket. Fabric was woven for me as a prize by #gainsboroughsilkweavingcompany in Sudbury. We visited when I was studying weave at @londonmetuni and had to design a fabric using the computer. They wove up 2m in silk with a metallic yarn and 2m in a different colour way. @lindalepard and one other student had fabric woven on the same warp. Cutting into it was scary as the fabric is totally unique! @ldnmetarts #Sew500 #gainsboroughweaving #gainsboroughsilk @textiles_ldnmetarts @gainsboroughweaving

Final entry for the #fabworksmakesjan22 and it's a mix of old and new makes. I made this Sew Over It Francine jacket from the Heart of Huddersfield Birdseye wool in Rolling Hills a couple of years ago, although I haven't had as many opportunities to wear it as I expected! When ordering the fabric, I also popped some navy wool flannel in my basket. Late last year I saw the #tatjanatrousers by @just_patterns and knew it would be the perfect pairing. I finished hemming them last night, so they were just in time for the competition! It's almost impossible to see any details on these trousers given the lack of light, but you can swipe to see my first welt pockets, of which I'm very proud and the different linings I used for the pocket bags. There are four pockets so I underestimated how much lining fabric I would need and had to mix and match my scraps. The instructions were really good so it was nice to try out some new tailoring techniques. I made a size 38 at the waist, grading to a 40 at the hip, but would grade to a 42 if I made them again. They aren't too small but I think the pleats would hang better with a little more ease. The wool flannel was lovely to work with and is actually one of my favourite fabrics for smart trousers, it's really comfortable to wear and warm while being lightweight. #soifrancine #soifrancinejacket #heartofhuddersfield #imakemyownclothes #b37w27h40 #hocwintersewing #sewyourcolors22 #sewyourcolours22 #ithaspockets

I finally made myself a three-piece suit! It took me a little bit of time to get it all together (especially the jacket), but I’m very happy with the end result. The jacket is version 1 of the Francine jacket from @sewoveritlondon , the vest is the Vintage vest from @folkwearsewing.patterns with quite some adjustments and the trousers are the Nina trousers which are also from @sewoveritlondon . Fabrics are a lovely tweed and a smooth lining which I bought at @toverstof , as well as the buttons. The trousers are lined now, after wearing it for a few times, I realized that it was way too itchy. I’m happy with the result and hope it will get a bit colder so I can get a more wear out of it! #nevernotsewing #sewing #soifrancinejacket #soininatrousers #vintagevest #patternsewing #tweedsuit #memade #tweed #fabric

Sewing is slow these days. But, it's making me be much more intentional about how I spend my time and which projects are highest priority. These are three new pieces that have been in the works since July! I am wearing a dark pair of high waisted #gingerjeans (which I think are my best fitting/most comfortable pair so far!), A white lace #soilucytshirt and a #soifrancinejacket. I bought the denim from @threadbarefabrics years ago, the stretch lace and cotton knit for the tee are from @fabricdotcom and the blazer is made from a mystery fabric that I thrifted. The Gingers are size 12 with an adjusted yoke and waistband for my sway back and I always have to play with the width below the knee to adjust for my calves. The Lucy tee is a size 14 (my size in all @sewoveritlondon patterns) and I just underlined the main body pieces and hemmed the sleeves but so far, have left the lace hem raw and hemmed the solid underneath. This Francine Jacket is my favorite blazer yet... I have always wanted to love wearing blazers but don't have many reasons to and haven't nailed the right one yet. This one might be it (though the fabric is a tiny bit itchy. 🙄). It's a size 14, shortened by two inches in the sleeves and three in the main body pieces. Other than that, I didn't make any adjustments. I like it most with the sleeves rolled a little as it makes it look so much more casual and am looking forward to seeing how else I can style it with what I already have in my wardrobe. 😊 #memadeeveryday #imakemyclothes #imnot2d #soishowoff #indiesewing #2020projects
