Pattern: @sewoveritlondon #soiDahliaCoat Fabric: wool blend coating from @lafinchfabrics_new I made this Dahlia Coat way back in January 2021 but haven't reached for it often. In my mind it was a thick winter coat which I don't have much occasion for. In reality, I realized that even though the fabric is heavy, it's not super warm. Fast forward to last month when I'm frantically packing for our trip and I'm stumped for outerwear. I need something heavier, but not too heavy, in case my light cardigan isn't enough. On a whim I grab this. Well, it was an absolute star especially in Madrid where it was cooler. The silhouette "es tan mola" and it went with everything. Since then I've been wearing it a lot. It's not roomy enough to be a major layering piece and that's ok. I've reframed it in my mind as a transitional piece and it's just perfect! Pictured with my barely visible Dorothie Shirt, which I'm also enjoying more lately. I enjoy the #weararetheynow tag. Making progress and getting closer to being finished my #soidahliacoat 🪡 The lining is attached the hem has been slip stitched and now I just need to hem the lining and put the snaps on. It’s day 5 of the #sewnewinjune challenge being hosted by @sowhatifisew and it’s all about trying new seam finishes! Not only have I not made a coat before, I’ve never lined anything in this way either so my new seam finish is the coat lining! Ive hand stitched all the hems making them invisible on the outside of the coat. Ive also inserted welt pockets which is something else I haven’t done before - spot the hidden Harry potters fabric! This coat had been a year in the making! I started it last fall and completed the welt pockets and one or two of the seams on the outer shell. Then I thought I might need a square shoulder adjustment, got overwhelmed at how to also adjust the front bands, set it aside to think about it, and by the time I was ready to pick it up, it would have been completely off season for such a coat. But I picked it up again recently, decided the adjustments weren’t necessary (yay!) and carried on. The pattern is the #soidahliacoat by @sewoveritlondon and it’s my first real coat! I love the drop shoulders and simple silhouette. It also calls for snaps along the front bands but for now I have it only secured by the belt. It’s a great color and weight for this time of year, and I’m so glad to have returned to this project. I’d been in the mood for something different and really enjoyed trying something that was challenging to me and using some different techniques. My hand stitching definitely needs practice and I need to find better interfacing before the next one (suggestions welcome, please!!) but I found making this jacket very satisfying. Theme for day 4 of #bpsewvember is The Best and I have to agree with @sew.with.joy: The best feeling is wearing an all #memade outfit. Even though there are still a lot of garments I want to master like bras, bathing suits, jeans, jackets, fitting woven fabric in general, I have to remind myself how far I’ve come. I think it’s important to look back and remember where you started and appreciate everything you know and master now. In this picture I’m wearing all me made. I’m wearing my @sewoveritlondon wool Dahlia coat, my wool @helens__closet Blackwood cardigan, my self-drafted viscose skirt, my black jersey @tillybuttons Agnes and even @evielaluve Binky panties made from jersey scraps. The best thing about sewing is that you’ll never run out of new patterns, new techniques or new challenges to do. There’s always room for improvement and I think that’s why I never find it boring. Sewing is the hobby I’ve had the longest and even though there were times I didn’t sew as much as I do now I still took the machine out from time to time to sew just a small item.

I had another go at the Dorothie Blouse which I first made in May 2021. I felt the fit was a little off but I liked the style enough to try again, adding a couple custom touches. This is one of my best me-made outfits, with the help of my @wearinghistory #smoothsailingtrousers and @sewoveritlondon #soidahliacoat Pattern: #blousedorothie by @slow_sunday_paris Fabric: lightweight Italian cotton (maybe lawn?) From @britexfabrics For this one I: *removed excess volume from lower back *undid my overzealous broad back adjustment *redrew armscye closer to body *shortened sleeve, curved it, and added a cuff *shaped side seams using the Melilot as a guide And for some special details: *self fabric ruffle trim *button pairs instead of singles Unfortunately I'm kind of disappointed with it! It doesn't fit well across the bust, it catches above the bust after I raise my arms and I have to tug it down back into place. Either I should've left that broad back adjustment in, or I need to go up a size. Honestly, I CBA and probably won't make this again. It's a little gutting because the fabric is so nice and I had such a clear vision. It’s reveal day for @sowhatifisew #sewnewinjune challenge. This week was all about using new fabrics, patterns, techniques, fastenings and so on to really stretch your sewing skills! I chose to sew a lined coat, with welt pockets and a tie waist as I have never sewn a coat before! I got to explore some new techniques and to work with a fabric a lot thicker than anything I’ve used before. Im happy with the final result and this will super snuggly for autumn! Pattern: @sewoveritlondon Dahlia Coat #soidahliacoat Fabric: @lafinchfabrics wool/poly coating Lining: @cottonandsteel rayon challis The relaxed vibe, the dropped shoulders, the way the facing hugs the neck... I feel so stylish in my Dahlia! It feels fantastic to have finished this. It's been on the to-do list for over a year since I won the pattern from a giveaway hosted by @limbksews. I wouldn't have taken the plunge had I not won the giveaway, so huge thanks to Boon! This fabric! It looks a rather plain brown from afar but it's called two-tone mocha, and if you look closely it has colorful specks. It really warms up the brown and harmonizes so well with the blue lining. I fully embraced this as a slow sew. Never felt anxious to finish, just wanted everything to be done well and to enjoy the process. The main pieces are straightforward; some fiddly bits, but I just made sure I 100% understood what to do before proceeding (the only exception being the front lining corners; still not sure I got those right!). The end was all hand sewing which I found so relaxing to do in the evenings. I made a size 10 for my 35" bust with a 1/2" broad upper back adjustment. It feels constrictive at the armholes so I won't be able to wear anything very thick under it; not sure what I could have done to fix that. Otherwise it's easy fitting. When I started to rekindle a long-abandoned interest in sewing just over 2 years ago, @sewoveritlondon was one of the first indie pattern companies to catch my eye. I'm so pleased to congratulate them on their 10th anniversary this week! They're holding a giveaway for the occasion, in which we post our favorite SOI make. Tadaaaa... my coat is finished, worn a couple of time and approved in Sevilla last week! 👍 Very easy pattern to make, the explanations are clear. I just didn't sew the hems as told but as my grandpa used to do : I sew the lining and the main fabric together right sides together and leave a hole in one sleeve then return the coat on the right side by this hole.. it was a bit tricky but easy anyway because the wool is very light. If I sew this coat again or another coat pattern with a thick wool, I'll probably let 2 holes, one in each sleeve. I had a wonderful time last weekend at the @guthrieghani sewing retreat making this @sewoveritlondon Dahlia Coat 🪡🧵🧥 It was lovely to spend time with everyone in the @guthrieghani_studio and with the expert help of Layla @oldfashionedway to hold my hand with the welt pockets 😱 they always scare me! The fabric is a @paulsmithdesign deadstock boucle from @higgsandhiggs and the lining is a beautifully soft bremsilk cupro from @maccullochw I made a size 14 with no pattern adjustments. I’m combining days 2 and 3 really and sharing the pattern and fabric! For the #sewnewinjune challenge I wanted to try sewing a coat! I’ve chosen the dahlia coat from @sewoveritlondon which is a simple shape; with waist ties, welt pockets and lining. Lots of new techniques to try! For fabric I’m using this Yellow checked lightweight coating from @minervadotcom - I haven’t really sewn with thick material before so it will be a lovely change! For lining I’m just using a light blue viscose. Here we go! 2 months after getting word that we were moving and 6 weeks after moving in, I finally procured a sewing space. It might look sad, wedged into a corner behind the dining table, but I actually like that I'll be able to immerse myself and not worry about what's going on elsewhere in the small apartment. Unfortunately I've missed out on the height of summer sewing, even here, where summer seems to last forever. A few projects I had ready to go will be tucked away for next year unless I can use the fabric for Fall items. Like the 1 yard of bright coral denim that was meant to be #esthershorts. Can't for the life of me think of a current use for it!
