🕷️🕸️Spooky Season Dress 2023!🕸️🕷️ I made a ghost dress last year and a spider dress this year. I think a spooky season dress might be my new annual thing. This fabric is stretch sateen and I embroidered spiderwebs all over it. There is a little spider in one of the pockets 🕷️. I don’t make a lot of pencil dresses, but I really like this one! Pattern: the bodice is the Betty Dress by @sewoveritlondon and the pencil skirt is from Simplicity 9291 modified to have a kick pleat. They don’t fit together perfectly, but I made it work 😂 Fabric: stretch sateen from @joann_stores with added spiderweb embroidery by @ninoembroidery on Creative Fabrica. Happy holidays everyone!! 🎄☃️ I got to wear my Christmas dress to Christmas dinner tonight and it was fantastic. I can’t wait to sew more in the coming year! •-•-•-•-• I really rushed through making this dress because I decided to make it on a whim when I saw the 75% off Christmas cottons doorbuster at Joann’s just over a week before I had to fly away from my sewing machine! Since the fabric was so cheap, I was able to treat it like a practice dress and try some new things. I wanted to learn how to line a bodice properly with the fabrics encasing the zipper, so I used a cute ginger breadmen and women cotton as lining. This was also my first attempt at making a more fitted bodice and I was so terrified of making something too small I actually ended up cutting it two sizes too big! Even after I cut off some excess fabric I still had to use a ribbon from a ready to wear skirt in order to cinch the waist up. Even with all it’s flaws, it’s super swishy and lovely to wear. {ad} This is summer in a dress ☀️ @rainbowfabrickilburn kindly sent me this amazing Cotton Poplin recently and I had a very good think about what to make. Then it came to me! A twirly @sewoveritlondon #soibettydress 👗 I’ve made this dress a few times and absolutely love it. I make a size 10 grading to a 12 and add 1/2” to the bodice length. I finished my pinafore! It’s made from a #soibettydress I made a few years back whose bodice didn’t fit me well. It’s basically the Fleur pinafore from @untitledthoughts but modified to fit the original circle skirt. I tried to use as much of the fabric from the original bodice as I could for the pinafore. I cut the sleeves into strips for the waistband and cut the bib linings from the front and back bodice pieces. To get a good fit I had to do a few changes to the bodice after my toile(chose a size 6): side- and shoulder seams taken in about 1 inch on both sides. I can't believe it's been a week since we crossed our fingers and hoped the rain would stay away for our beautiful daughter's wedding day. It was my first time working with flannel, and I goofed by not properly stay stitching the necklines, which got a little stretched out. I ended up adding on some ties to the back and like think of it as a happy accident! #soibettydress @sewoveritlondon

Having watched the @sewoveritlondon series of YouTube videos on the #soibettydress , I was inspired to finally make one! I realised, from watching, that a toile was going to be necessary before cutting into my gorgeous @lamazifabrics Using the fabulous tracing paper from @patterntraceuk I sewed up the bodice in a 14. The general fit seems ok but I need to remove excess from the back neckline, extend the waist to my natural waistline and then check the waist darts (must rewatch the vlogs) 😅 Not too onerous 🤞 and then to muslin toile it..... I'm thinking of lining it too, so there's that as well.... 🤔 It'll be fine, right?!? #memademay2025 today's dress is a mash-up of a #soibettydress bodice and the skirt from a vintage pattern - #butterick2248 - takes a bit of ironing, but I do like the fullness! I think I 'm going to make a few more fit and flare dresses this summer, I do like the style and they are easy to wear (except on very hot days when I'd want something loose). Après m'être bien creusée le ciboulot quand au modèle pour cette robe, j'ai réussi à trouver ce combo parfait. Mes critères étaient: - Un patron que je possède OU qui me re-servira (#petitbudget) - Encolure carrée ou facilement modifiable ✂️ Mon dévolu s'est donc porté sur 2 patrons que je possède : le haut de la ⚪ Betty dress de @sewoveritlondon dont j'ai modifié encolure qui n'était pas suffisamment creusée pour le rendu que je souhaitais et le bas de la ⚪ Elsie dress, toujours de @sewoveritlondon C'est parfait à un point près: j'ai juste assemblé le haut et le bas sans retouche préalable en croisant les doigts pour que tout tombe bien. La longueur est la bonne mais les côtés sont légèrement décalés. Ça ne se voit pas et vu le peu de temps que j'ai eu pour la coudre, je m'estime heureuse que ce soit le seul soucis. My second @sewoveritlondon full circle skirt in an autumnal cotton poplin ❤️ The pattern I really want to have a stab at is the #soibettydress - a fitted bodice along with the full circle skirt, with both darts and an concealed/invisible zip. Given I’ve tried the skirt (and I love it) and have had a stab at darts, the next thing I needed to attempt was the concealed zip. The full circle skirt was perfect project as it allows for the insertion of a regular zip or a concealed zip. As a subscriber to the @sewoveritlondon Stitch School, I had access to Lisa’s step by step tutorial on how to insert an concealed zip and it was just what I needed. Stitch school also has a step by step tutorial on how to sew the full circle skirt but I didn’t follow that as I found that the written instructions were perfect for me. The Stitch School video demystified the insertion of the concealed zip. I don’t think my first attempt is perfect but practice will (hopefully) make it better 🤞🏽. I’m now equipped to attempt the #BettyDress - except that I don’t know how to make any adjustments for fittings - but that’s a challenge for another day. My favourite pattern company are celebrating their 10th birthday this month and have asked people to share their favourite makes. I came across @sewoveritlondon when I was trying to work out how to sew together the pattern pieces for an unfinished garment that I'd inherited from my Mum. I ended up watching lots of their tutorials and sewalongs on You Tube while working out how to attach facings, sleeves and pockets. I successfully finished that garment and was inspired to buy a pattern. The first thing I made was an Eva skirt from an old curtain. I later joined their stitch school and haven't looked back since. I think it's really helped me get through the last year. Finding a new hobby and creative outlet has been so important to my mental health as I've been living alone and shielding, trying to work online full time while dealing with a chronic illness. Sewing and connecting with the sewing community online has felt like a lifeline. I've found their patterns fit me really well, the style fits with things I like to wear and the instructions are easy to follow (plus there are lots of sewalongs available to help with tricky bits). I found it really hard to pick a favourite make but this my Emma dress, which I made through stitch school last year. I made two of these and have worn them a lot over the winter, great for work and really comfortable. I've also put together a collage of six other makes that I've worn/ love the most. These are my choices for the #makenine2021 challenge. I thought about ‘rolling over’ the ones from last year that I didn’t make but then I thought there’s probably a reason that I didn’t make them. Plus it’s so much fun choosing new ones! Last year I learnt loads of new sewing skills and also a lot about what clothes suit me and what I am likely to wear. So I’ve tried to choose patterns that are more wearable or that will develop my skills further. Let’s see how this goes... . . Patterns are: 1. Evans Blazer by @heyjunehandmade. I love the idea of making something more tailored but this is made from knit fabric so hopefully not too difficult 2. #gingerjeans by @closetcorepatterns. I’m really scared about trying to make my own jeans but I live in them so want to give it a go. Any tips welcomed! 3. #soibettydress by @sewoveritlondon . I’ve had this pattern for ages and not made it yet. I love the style - I was originally planning to make a dressy version for a special occasion however given the year we’ve had I’m thinking of starting with a less formal one that I can wear to work. 4. Butterick #B6285 wrap cardigan (and maybe the skirt too). I’ve also had this pattern for a while and it seems like a really wearable cardigan to go over dresses. 5. #closetcorepouf by @closetcorepatterns. This is a free pattern and I need it to use up all of my scraps. 6. #s3964 by @simplicity_creative_group . I’ve been looking for this pattern for a while and found it on @etsyuk recently. It looks like a lovely easy summer top. 7. #sewingzadie dress by @tillybuttons. This is another pattern I’ve had for a while and not made yet. Jersey dresses are something I wear a lot and I like the colour block options with this one. 8. #soicigarettepants by @sewoveritlondon. Yet another pattern I already have. I struggle to find trousers that fit me so really want to learn to make my own. So far I’ve only made trousers with an elastic waist so this will be a challenge for me. 9. Finally the #fringedresspattern by @chalkandnotch. After four weeks, here's my #sewrecreatethelookreveal just a little bit late! I managed to make 3 pieces based on my inspiration picture from @seamlinedliving The most straightforward one was the skirt which I made in this gorgeous #riflepapercorayon from @sistermintaka using the #soibettydress pattern and just adding a self drafted waistband. It doesn't have pockets, which is a shame, but I was worried the fabric would stretch out of shape. It stretched a lot on the bias so I ended up leveling the hem twice and then hemming by hand to deal with the varying hem depths. Those who know me will know I hate any handstitching, so it was a labour of love and it took a good few evenings to finish it, it's a big hem! The skirt feels wonderful to wear and has great movement which I tried to capture, semi successfully! (swipe for a little video)💃🏻 The next piece was the top which I copied from an old ready to wear favourite. I ran into a problem almost straight away because hemming the shoulder ruffle turned out to be a real battle! Double folding a jersey curve is no joke, and I ended up using every clip I had to keep it under control. I also realised after making it that it probably should have been in a viscose jersey, not a cotton jersey, to give the ruffles a bit of drape 🙈 At least I'll know for next time, and I think I'll try making the ruffles a double layer so there's no hemming! The headscarf is a new look for me but I really like how it brings the outfit together. I used the #soiheadscarf pattern which was very straightforward although I edgestitched the band closed, because of my hatred of hand sewing 😉 Overall, I'm really pleased with my new outfit, the challenge pushed me to try some different things and although I didn't get as far as creating a top out of the rayon to give me the option of a faux dress, it's very much on my to do list. I just need to spend the time fitting the Kitty bodice before I cut in to the rest of my #riflepaperrayon.
