Sewing focus for June: Skirts Having rummaged through my wardrobe whilst having a clear out, I identified a real gap in my wardrobe, and that is skirts. Whilst I own quite a few gorgeous collectif skirts, I feel the need for some more daytime-ey skirts to go with tops on the weekend or, when I finally manage to get a proper job, with shirts for work. Taking time to go through my wardrobe and identify the gaps in it really has been quite invaluble and will help me to be a more conscious and practical sewer going forward. I found this @namedclothing #paolatop in my wardrobe that matched beautifully but found I was too warm as the day moved on and put my @matchymatchysewingclub #hightideset top on which I made in a white cotton poplin from @alwaysknittingandsewing and thus was perfect for a very hot day and was a perfect match and cattle for the Ava skirt. I have been on a roll in January with adding to my wardrobe. I have found that for the last couple of years, I have a burst of creative energy after the holidays to just make things for myself. 😊 So, I lean into it and try to make all the things I was wishing I had time for in October, November and December. These are likely the last two things I will finish this month- a #renfrewshirt in a light weight ivory sweatshirt knit from @stonemountainfabric and a #soiavaskirt out of a twill plaid wool from @stylemakerfabrics . On January 1, I decided to make an outfit to wear to my birthday party — which was 48 hours away. I shopped my stash and selected this acorn colored dead stick brushed poly viscose stretch suiting from @blackbirdfabrics for the blazer and a wool suiting from @moodfabrics for the skirt. The lining for the blazer is left over poly satin from my test wedding dress. Ready for the weekend ✨ I fancied a new denim mini skirt and thought I'd whip one up for winter. I used the Sew Over It Ava skirt as the base (a listen I knew fitted me well). I removed the waist band and added a facing. I also added a front centre seam and borrowed the pockets from the Nina Lee Camden skirt. I'm pretty pleased with how it's turned out but I think I maybe need to make the hem a little shorter. Faux-leather skirt! I made this quite a few weeks ago now but finally making it to the grid, really fallen out of motivation for posting but I'm quite proud of this one. I've been loving all the black leather things atm but I just can't buy miniskirts off the shelf due to the curve in my back making the back far too short on me. I picked up this faux-leather/pleather from @abakhanfabrics and decided to go for my tried and tested miniskirt pattern and it turned out great! The fabric was easy to work with but difficult to sew on the right side which meant the hem and waistband are wobblier than I'd like 😬 next time I think I'd sew it with tissue paper underneath to stop it sticking to the machine. I’d had a vague idea to make a shift dress with two different fabrics and when Fleur from @longancraft asked if I’d like some of their new denim in exchange for a post I thought this would be a great opportunity, though admittedly my plan was missing most of the details 😂. I deliberated over the colours for a while - they have tonnes. I was considering black and white and also lilac and pastel pink but decided to go for something bold. I had a metre of each, used about 1.5m in total (0.75 of each). To save some time I used the bodice of the @byhandlondon #bhlflora dress and smushed that up with the #sewoveritlondon #soiavaskirt. I did have to fiddle around to convert the darts into a fisheye and get the sides to match up but it worked together fine (admittedly this isn’t a straightforward hack). I spent a lot of time thinking about whether to chop the pattern into pieces and add seam allowances first but in the end decided to just cut the fabric into strips, stitch it together and then use that to make the dress. There was a lot of fudging to stop the darts distorting the pattern too much - I think this could be much better done at the drafting stage but my brain ached working out how to do it. It was a straightforward sew otherwise. There’s an invisible zip up the side and it’s fully lined with an old cotton sheet because there are obviously a tonne of seams on the inside. It was a really fun project and I definitely want to try something similar with different colours fabrics. As before if you’d like to make your own version - or something completely different - Longan crafts have lots of coloured denim and pretty embroidered fabrics etc, lots of beautiful things for summer dresses. 1/10: abandoned project challenge! This is a hacked #soiavaskirt which I previously gave up because I'd put a lot of effort into the button down front closing I drafted, but trusted my usual pattern pieces were fine without re-measuring 🫣 And then I fell out of love with the project, which I only started to use up this suiting fabric remnant anyway, and couldn't see how to fix it. But now, it's finished! I had to add some width by adding an extra piece for the button stand. And it's not my most favourite skirt and it has some flaws with some wonky dart lines as a result of my attempt to save the fit, but I've had RTW skirts that are worse for flaws and this makes a decent work staple! #sewyourown #memade #memadewardrobe

Merry Christmas everyone 🎄🌟 I’ve gone for Christmas separates this year for wearability! Two super quick tried and true patterns for me. A Tilly and the Buttons Freya top in sparkly sweater knit from Minerva and a Sew Over It Ava skirt in tartan cotton. The sparkly sweater knit is a bit more sheer than I expected so I’ve got a thermal underneath! It’s not my best work and I’m not super happy with the neckband which is a bit loose. My Ava skirt is fully lined with no pockets and I added a bit of length to the waistband as I always find it too short! I also used an invisible zip which went in better on my second attempt. I hope Santa has brought you lots of fabric! I made a 12 in the top and I think an 8 in the bottoms 3. @fibremood ermine blouse (in a small?? I think) in @minervadotcom exclusive fabric and a pair of @sewoveritlondon ultimate trousers and I have made so many adjustments to these I don’t think I could give a size 4. @sewoveritlondon Ava skirt in @ladymcelroyfabrics cord. Here is the outfit I wore to the #KnittingandStitchingShow in Harrogate on Saturday. I love it! I made the #soiavaskirt #soicocojacket and the #davenportdresshack into a top! Styled with cowboy boots, tights and belt. The beautiful jacquard fabric is from #jennystitchesfabrics and the top is made from cotton lawn from #ladymcelroyfabrics I think they go together beautifully. I had such a good time with my sister, Jill and Vicky (@lowtyburty) at the show! It was the best day! 🥰

We celebrated Christmas with my family yesterday so I had one more opportunity for a fancy/festive outfit. I made this #soiavaskirt during the fall out of a thrifted wool blend fabric. It has some grey threads running through the black that you can't see here. And then, I made this wine colored, stretch velvet (fabric from @lafinchfabrics_new ) #soiroxyjumper on Monday! 🪻🧵 Lise Tailor Zadie Blouse🧵🪻 In the summer we visited Lyon and went to the beautiful Lise Tailor shop. I went in and saw so many beautiful fabrics, haberdashery and buttons. I ordered myself a beautiful cat print and this lovely floral viscose. I knew I wanted to make a Sew Over It Zadie Blouse with this fabric and spent a lunch break searching through the variety of buttons on Lise Tailors website. There were so many to choose from but I finally decided on these lovely mustard buttons as I knew they would stand out against the navy. The Zadie Blouse is one of my favourite blouses and goes so well with Ava Skirts, pencil skirts for work and wearing casually with jeans. Here I have paired it with my newest Sew Over It Ava Skirt, but have also worn it casually with a pair of jeans. This blouse is a really lovely addition in my wardrobe and it's one of the blouses I reach for frequently. The fabric feels really luxurious and I always feel very chic wearing it. It's such a special fabric and a lovely treat to myself for my 30th. Now I just need to decide what to make with the cat fabric 🤔 I don't want it to become a fabric that sits in my stash and I'm too scared to cut into. I bought enough for a dress so I am going to monitor my 'go to' dresses over the next few weeks. If one particular pattern or style stands out then I will probably make one of those as I know it will be a winner! 🌼 Me Made May Plans 🌼 I planned my week yesterday and decided I would also plan what I was going to wear. I don't really have the time or space to photograph a dress each day. Therefore, I will plan and photograph all my Me Made Mays for the week in advance. It will also be interesting to see if I wear what I had planned!
