‘Slippery little sucker!’ Extra points if you can name the film! Of course, I am talking about silk. This month’s challenge was to make something in this renowned tricky fabric! . I chose this lovely Core Range Charmeuse Silky Satin Fabric in turquoise from @minervadotcom as a wearable toile. The pattern is #soipussybowblouse by @sewoveritlondon 🧵the sewing was ok, the cutting out was tricky! ✂️ the fabric just won’t stay still, so I had a few wavy lines to contend with. After consulting the #fabricsavvy book and changing the needle and sewing machine settings at the advice of @carolynroseschoolofsewing it was actually fairly straightforward. French seams throughout and some hand sewing around the collar and cuffs. Sew nine plans 2021 This is the first time I actually put this list together cos I usually don’t plan for these things nor very good with sticking to plans...but we’ll see.... Actually, to put 9 on the list is an ambitious one. Since I’m quite stubborn when it comes to getting that perfect fit, I usually do at least one toile before the cutting into good fabric. #Sewaprilblouse25 hosted by @cloth_edit and @sewn_on_the_tyne has me focusing on much-needed office-appropriate tops this month, and I used my blissfully plan-free Easter long weekend to consume an impressive number of Mini Eggs and endless cups of tea (that never went cold thanks to my new mug warmer - bliss!), and to finally sew up a blouse I've been wanting to make for an age.  It's a @sewoveritlondon #soipussybowblouse (with a few small modifications) in an unusual fabric that I bought on a visit home to Australia in October last year. #fabricisthebestsouvenir  The fabric is a lovely, ever-so-slightly off-white 'Premium Satin' from Super Cheap Fabrics in Melbourne. It has an unusual 82% Viscose / 15% Linen / 3% polyamide composition. It feels really luxurious, with a weighty drape, subtle sheen, and almost sand-washed hand. The only fitting adjustment I made was to narrow the shoulders (could use 1-2cm more as it's still slightly dropped, which is as intended, but isn't my preference).  I lengthened the ties so each one is 15cm longer, and made the ends 1cm wider when finished. I love a bishop sleeve, so I widened the sleeves and doubled the height of the cuff by cutting four, rather than two folded in half.  The cuffs are fastened with elastic button looping trim that enables me to get the cuffs over my hands without undoing the buttons, which is a function I always plan into my makes. I am no longer doomed to get my hands trapped in the sleeves of inside-out tops because I forgot to undo the buttons. The buttons here are fetching floral shank numbers that my lovely friend Theresa @lostmythread gave me, and they look so pretty and vintagey. I'm really happy with this blouse. It's a pairing of pattern and fabric that works well, and I suspect it's going to be a really useful piece within my wardrobe.

New top! I finished this #soipussybowblouse top about a week ago but finally wore it today. I've made this pattern a few times now. I love the red plaid flannel one I made a few years ago, and this is my attempt to recreate that in a less winter-specific fabric. It's a woven pink and slightly lilac plaid cotton I got at my local quilt shop @alleykatsquiltshop a year or two ago. I've got a really long day at work today thanks to a Parents Evening, so I got my husband to take a photograph of me just before lunchtime when I still looked reasonably fresh! My blouse is a new make - another @sewoveritlondon #soipussybowblouse but with sleeves. I think that next time I should raise the sleeve head as it is past my shoulders and I think it makes me look wider. The polyester bouncy jersey crepe is from my deep stash and despite not holding a crease from pressing and not being one of the recommended fabrics, I think it looks pretty good in this pattern and it is very comfortable to wear. A shiny blouse, courtesy of @sewoverit #soipussybowblouse and @poundfabrics I finished this a week ago but have been too under the weather to post it until now. It probably needs pressing a little bit more but I don't have the energy to do that right now! I've made this pattern before but not in such a slippery fabric, so it was a bit of a learning curve. The satin polyester was very tricky to work with, it shifted and frayed if I so much as looked at it, so it's been zig-zagged to within an inch of it's life. I also added a facing as I thought it might make it easier to attach the bow, but the jury is still out on that one. Overall I'm quite pleased with it, I don't have a plain black blouse in my wardrobe so hopefully it will lend itself as a staple. I shortened the sleeves as they felt a bit overwhelming on me, and added elastic at the cuffs to cinch them in a bit. Next up, something a bit more festive... 🎄

A make for me! I made myself my second @@sewoveritlondon pussybow blouse (version 2), and I am in love ❤️ I f*cked up the button loops on the sleeves by not making them big enough for the buttons I have used, so I hand sewed some black ribbon for the loops instead, which have worked like a charm. I have had this gorgeous @flojofabrics viscose in my stash since 2020 and thought it was about time I used it ha. The lips are metallic-y, which you can't quite see in the pictures but it adds a lush shimmer to the blouse. I watched the sew along YouTube videos as I was sewing, which were a great help and can recommend watching them when you make the blouse. My version of the @sewoveritlondon Lorna Pinafore made in a sturdy denim. The Lorna pinafore come with two different shapes of the bodice and two different shapes for the pockets. I loved the notched option for the bodice and the angled pockets. The fabric is actually a remnant from another Sew Over It project, the #soisorrentojacket from a few years ago. I made my usual size 12 and the only change was to shape the bust darts a little bit and also the center back/zipper is sewn with 0,5cm extra seam allowance. Also, the pinafore is lined, very pretty inside ( also very easy to follow instructions to get a nice clean finish) I used again my @babylock_de #babylockprimo #babylockapplaud for a bit of top stitching interest and also the hem/backsplit is sewn with one needle in the coverstitch machine. So, I haven't been doing much sewing recently, but I have been doing some fabric shopping and have lots of plans!! Top to bottom, plans are: 1. Short sleeved top of some description as it's only 1 metre. Maybe the @sewoveritlondon shift dress, but the top version (saw one @sewisfaction had made as a sample on her latest video and liked the look of it). 2. Trousers - either #soininatrousers or Nina Lee #portobellotrousers. I haven't made either pattern and can't decide which would suit me better - think I'm leaning towards portobello, but we'll see. 3. Another #soipussybowblouse which will pair nicely with the trousers. 4. Either a @tillybuttons #sewingindigo dress but more likely a @deer_and_doe_patterns #myosotisdresss 5. This is a really soft drapey jersey and I might have a go at a Tilly and the Buttons #agnestop 6. A blouse of some description - haven't found one I like yet though. Any suggestions of new autumn blouses/tops welcome! 7. A @fridaypatterncompany #wildergown- I really fancy swooshing around in a bright red maxi dress!! 8. Another blouse but again, not sure on the pattern yet. 9. Another Friday Pattern Company #sagebrushtop I also have plans to try some #dawnjeans and I'm going to make another #clarecoat but I'll post details of that as I go. In the meantime, that should keep me occupied!! I do also have a load of plans for Soph which I will post up tomorrow.
