January was rough so in an attempt to counteract it with creativity I made a party dress. No idea when or even if I’ll wear it but it sparked joy, used only resources that I already had and the final dress is fun to swish around in. The pattern is mostly the Sew Over It Elsie merged with the back bodice of the By Hand London Kim, plus an added lining. I have no idea if I’ve deviated from the construction as I’ve lost the instructions and just winged it. There’s a lapped zipper in the side seam as it’s easier to do up without risking a shoulder subluxation. I used a great YouTube tutorial from @tashacouldmakethat for the zipper insertion technique. Giving a nod to the vintage style I pick stitched around the neckline and armholes & hand stitched all 4m of the hem. My hand stitching still has room for improvement but all that slow sewing on the couch was perfect for dark evenings stuck inside. Patterns: #soielsiedress and #bhlkimdress Fabrics: Main fabric is a mid-weight brocade which was in the Sew Confident CCC course box. Lining is a taffeta that I picked up at the #surreysews fabric swap last year.

This is probably the most challenging pattern I have made yet. I love this style of dress, so I went looking for a pattern that would help me achieve the look of my favourite Review dress - princess seams, box pleats, beautiful full skirt. I bought the pattern but put off making it because invisible zippers are scary and stressful. Anyway, I decided to bite the bullet and make it in time for the festive season, so I would have a 'fancy' dress. I love, love, love the fullness of the box pleat skirt, and couldn't resist a twirl shot! With help from youtube tutorial, I got the invisible zipper installed successfully and am very happy with the result (sorry, I forgot to get pictures of it, but will try to get some soon). I even added some inseam pockets (because every dress needs them, right??). Today’s theme for #sewapril2022 is “Mad about Plaid.” I’m definitely mad about plaid, so it was challenging to pick just one garment! This is one of my favorite summer dresses, which easily dresses up or down. The pattern is the #soielsiedress from @sewoveritlondon.
