I would like to start the year by sharing my last sewing make of 2024 and my proudest one to date. It is the Chloe Coat by @sewoveritlondon. I made it from 100% Liberty wool bought at my local fabric shop @fionasfabrics. It was a 2 metre pre loved length of fabric. I made size 8 and left the length the same but had to make other adjustments. I shortened the sleeves by 4.5 cm and raised the armscye by 1.5cm. I also took it in by an extra 1 cm around the waist on both the sides and the back. For the pockets, I decided to cut them on the bias so the checks are diagonal. Plus, I interfaced the top of each pocket and the part of the coat where I sewed them to reinforce that area as this fabric was a little stretchy. I also raised them so the top sits on my hips. I made the popper version but I decided to use fabric covered buttons to give the impression of a button up coat. It's also fully lined (including the patch pockets) with a viscose/acetate blend in the colour beige from @beyond.thepinkdoor. Although the instructions are very clear I actually followed the video instructions from Sew Over It's Stitch School as this was my first coat. In the end it was quite to make and I just took my time to perfect the fit. I also learned a few techniques on the way such as lining a coat and stabilising the sleeves at the shoulders using ice wool (see last photo). It was an enjoyable process and I would like to make more coats in the future. Ah! So my first sewing project of 2024 was the Chloe Coat pattern from @sewoveritlondon I was in desperate need of a new winter coat and I had the perfect navy blue wool fabric, so thought I would give it a go. It's a great pattern if you're looking to learn some new skills like using an open ended zip, adding ice wool to a sleeve head to give it structure and also inserting and finishing off a full lining. I enjoyed the sewing process and I'm really pleased to now have a smart, warm coat for this cold season! First glance at my 2024 #makenine ✨ . I *already* have supplies and patterns for all of these (some are already even cut out 🫣). My overarching goal is to use up as much stash as I can and finish projects that have been taking up brain space for too long (some for years). Starting from top left: 1 #stripehypesweater by @kutovakika using my on order Gilmore Girls yarn from @sewrellayarn (this is the newest add to the list, and my motivation for finishing my currently in progress sweater) 2 #soichloecoat from @sewoveritlondon. I cut the pieces for this out before I had Maggie, so it’s been patiently waiting for going on four years now. Top or my list so I can get some wear out of it this winter! 3 #fancytigerfentop with long sleeves from @fancytigercrafts. I’ve made the dress version many times and am excited to make the top! 4 #pagehoodie from @chalkandnotch. I have the perfect fabric from @iseefabric a’waitin’ 5 #duvalstarquilt by @suzyquilts using the most meaningful fabric. Will definitely be sharing more. 6 #minipagehoodie because obviously 7 #allinoneboxpouch and several others from @aneelahoey. So excited to learn this new genre of making! 8 #rainbowdolman from @lowlandkids for all the kids! I got a random pack of fabric from #iseefabric and I’m going to let the kids each pick their rainbow colors 9 #scatteredpearlsocks from @summer.lee.knits using some souvenir yarn from our visit to Prague last May . So there you have it! I’ve narrowed down these nine as my most exciting makes, but there are so many others swirling around in my head and already on my list. I did it, I made a coat 🥳. A very productive weekend and I'm proud as punch. Hopefully it won't rain tomorrow so I can wear it on the school run. Definitely the most tricky thing I've made so far. It’s true what they say: a tailor’s pressing clapper is a game changer. I’ve been working on finishing my @sewoveritlondon #soichloecoat , which has hung abandoned in the wardrobe for a couple of years 🙈. I didn’t have a clapper when I first started making it and the seams were very bouncy, despite my best efforts to press the wool fabric into submission. It is looking a million times better now I’ve been at it with this clapper!! The clapper absorbs the steam and sort of “sets” the seam as the fabric cools. It’s brilliant!! So I must be mad. I decided this is the year I'm finally going to learn how to make a coat. I'm starting with the @sewoveritlondon chloe coat which is an intermediate level pattern which is supported with tutorials on their stitch school. Once I've done this one the aim is to progress on to the 1960s style coat they also sell. However 16 pattern pieces cut out of 4 A0 pattern sheets will give a total of 34 pieces of fabric to sew together 😱. Not sure this will be a quick sew, it'll probably be summer before I'm finished. Especially as I sew on the kitchen table so it all has to be tidied away each time I finish for the day. Hope I don't lose any bits. Annoyingly my fabric arrived yesterday and the flecks in the wool which looked cerise on the photo are actually rust coloured in real life 😳 the joys of online fabric shopping. Still the coat will have a bright hot pink lining and the main fabric is a charcoal colour with grey and white flecks so its more than 85% my colours 😅 #soichloecoat #madebyme #sewoverit

Finally finished my Itch to Stitch #givernydress in a #libertylondonfabric Tana Lawn. It’s fully lined and also shown with a #soichloecoat I made a few years ago in linen. Really pleased with how the dress has turned out.

Somehow I only saw about the amazing and super generous @sewhayleyjane #sew500 giveaway now. Thank you so much for this fun and inspiring idea! I had to think hard about my proudest make, as almost every single piece I make teaches me something new and most become well-loved and worn. Finally I decided that the title will go to my first-ever coat, one that was started in October 2017 and finished 1.5 years later, because making a baby can do that to sewing plans 🤪 A lot of love went into the making of it, a lot of improvisation and hand stitching. It’s interlined with fleece for extra warmth. The pattern is the Sew Over It Chloe coat, the boiled wool was sourced locally, I think from @tonitex_montreal, and the beautiful lining is a cotton voile from @lafinchfabrics_new . I remember how excited I was the day I saw SOI release their Chloe class, as this coat was an exact copy of a coat my grandma had in her closet (she was hospitalised and never returned home) which I brought home from across the ocean and wanted to recreate in her honour. Sadly grandma passed away 10 days after Leo was born in 2018. Heres my finished coat and its totally wearable. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it was going to be, although I did have to recut a pocket and the front zip placket as I mucked them up on the first go 🤣. Fabric came from pound fabrics, the speckled wool was just £3.50 a metre and as its non directional I think I used less than 2.5 m so under £10.50, even including the lining fabric (£1.50pm), zip and ice wool its well under £15 for a warm winter coat. Ice wool was a new thing and really does make a big difference to how the sleeve head sits. I followed the sew over it stitch school class which really helped with some of the tricky bits. So it took a while (nearly 2 hours in total over a few evenings) to cut out all the pieces for my coat. They are now all interfaced, darts marked and pinned and hopefully the first stitches will go in this weekend. I'll be watching the stitch school videos again as I go and listening to the podcasts from @lovetosew.podcast that they recommended. The last days I was thinking about a new coat. For autumn first but I am also in a need of a new winter coat (and new clothes for the new season). My coat will be out of velvet in two different colors. I need a pattern with a good fit, classic but space for options working with two different color ways. I didn’t found many new patterns for coats so here are my personal thoughts the last days: 1) The Isla Trench Coat @namedclothing (#islatrenchcoat) - classic, long, lined but no special construction lines like princess seams. 2)The Chilton Trench Coat @cashmerette (#chiltontrenchcoat) - I did it in 2019 so I knew the pattern. Classic, lovely princess seams, not a 100% fitted, went very well. Lined. 3) The Chloe Coat @sewoveritlondon (#soichloecoat) - Lovely look with the added scarf, clean look without the scarf, a bit more special look than the normal classic Trench coats. Lined. 4) The Luzerne Trench Coat @deer_and_doe_patterns (#luzernetrenchcoat) - Beautiful look with that skirt, lovely princess seams, nice collar but unlined. 5) The Clare Coat @closetcorepatterns (#clarecoat) - All in all a different shape, lined, looks very comfy and perfect for thicker fabrics. 6) The 1016 by Simplicity (#simplicity1016) - Something special with that collar. Interesting look also without the collar. Definitely a coat you only sew once with a big wow factor. First I thought about 2) Chilton because I love my coat from 2019 a lot! But well it’s out of wool that is thicker as velvet so may be a velvet Chilton will look a bit roomy. Than I thought about Luzerne 4) because every time I see Luzerne I love that look! But it is unlined so nothing for autumn. I went over to 6) because that look is great! So special with that collar but I am not sure 😅 Clare (5) will be the one for the winter coat in my opinion but not for my velvet idea. SOI Chloe (3) is beautiful with that collar but well a loose collar I am not sure 🤔 So I took another look to 1 - Isla. The only problem is to let two different fabrics shine without princess seams but it is lined, a Trench, looks lovely on every pic I saw. I will give that pattern a try for my idea. 💓

Here’s another snap of my first handmade coat in action. It is slightly lop-sided because the distance from the inside edge of the visible part of the zip and the front edge of the coat is supposed to be much wider. I think this is down to a cutting out error, but I made it work. I reckon it’s one of those things no one would ever notice unless I told them!! Since I use our dining room table for cutting out patterns, and cutting out is the most tedious/dreaded part for me, I tend to cut multiple patterns out at a time. . These are the patterns I’ve got cut & ready to go. Yes, I will still give myself flexibility to let some projects “jump the line,” but I also want to get these out of bins and on people (mostly me, but one is obviously for one of my kiddos 😊). . I also want to try and find creative ways to use scraps.
