We were rewarded with some lovely weather today! Lasted half a day but just as well because we needed to check out and be on our way anyway! Unfortunately did not get to see as many places in Florianópolis as we wanted - apart from the rain, many museums that we might have visited were closed thanks to the holidays - and worst of it all - the fabric shops were closed! 😭 I made a custom out of it, to get fabric in places I visit and then I make the souvenirs myself 🥰 but last two trips were a bust 😑 another reason to come back to Floripa! . 🎄⭐🧵 Peter Rabbit Christmas Dress 🧵⭐🎄 We had a day off work today to visit the beautiful Chatsworth House and enjoy the house and garden decorated for Christmas. I made myself a new @SewOverItLondon Vintage Shirt Dress in November for the fun festive events of December. I saw this beautiful Beatrix Potter quilting cotton on The Quilt Shops website and immediately fell in love with it and knew it was destined to be a festive shirt dress. I really enjoyed sewing this up and it's been such fun to wear today! It's definitely going to have a lot of wear through December and may even be my Christmas dress. I paired the dress with a warming thermal vest, black tights and black lace up boots. Alex and I had a lovely day visiting each room, keeping an eye out for the mice in each room and toasting marshmallows! First go at #soiultimateshiftdress @sewoveritlondon Made size 12 at bust graded to 16 for waist and hip. I did have sleeves but took them out as they were too tight and changed the fit across the shoulders 🤷‍♀️ so just used bias binding for armholes instead. Used bias binding @thespeckyseamstress and label @cosyclubhandmade Fabric is quilting cotton from @mysewingbox love this print 🤩 Came together really easily, but think may add a belt, or darts at back for next time. A Franken-pattern for spooky season 👻 So I’ve had a Stine Goya dress living rent-free in my mind for the last 6 months 🙈 (last photo) - I love its shape and proportions, but I did not love the ££ price tag 😭 and I felt I’d get more wear from a different fabric and a higher neckline. So of course I got it into my head to recreate the look - one of the many reasons that we sew, right?! This dress started life as the @sewoveritlondon Ultimate Shift Dress, to which I lowered and re-angled the dart, drafted a V-neckline, and finished it with bias binding. The sleeves are from the @closetcorepatterns Pauline dress - I sewed a deep hem of 6.5cm and added an elastic channel right below that to add some flare to the bottom of the sleeve. I feel like it’s giving “witchy-goes-80s” vibes - and despite the awkward🧍🏽‍♀️pose haha, it’s the perfect thing for enjoying Halloween today! Fabric is a cotton jacquard from @moodfabrics . ✨My stitch story✨ Inspired by @wearethefabricstore #TFSStitchStories, I'm sharing my own I made the leap into sewing my own clothes in July 2018, making this gorgeous @sewoveritlondon #SOIUltimateShiftDress at a beginner dressmaking weekend they used to run I'd previously been given one of those tiny sewing machine by my grandmother for my twenty first birthday (quote from my mother: "she'll either love it or she'll hate it") and had been playing around making bunting, scrunchies, and even PJ bottoms for the next 4 years. After she realised I was serious about this hobby, she kindly upgraded me to a much more sophisticated Janome machine Layla @oldfashionedway was the most wonderful teacher I could have had for my first lesson. Her style does not let you dwell on perfectionism, which was exactly what I needed otherwise I would have been fretting over my darts for hours! She also cheerled me into sewing a more “advanced” fabric rather than just using cotton. And it has been a lovely round circle that my most recent sewing class (over a year ago) was learning to sew jeans with Layla 💕 My learning journey process has been to go to an in person class for key new skills I wanted to nail, and then to sew my own garments in between with my new skill sets to build on the skill. I was very lucky to be living in London and had access to great sewing classes: ultimate culottes (to learn invisibile zippers), how to fit trousers with @charlottesews , @elisalex 's bodice fitting masterclass & jeans making with @oldfashionedway I still don't use YouTube much for learning skills, instead preferring written blogs so I can skim through to the relevant part more quickly and digest it at my own place What's next in my sewing journey? I finally got to wear the dress I made for my brother's wedding last weekend. I had quite a disaster with a few toiles of a different pattern that I just didn't get right & also didn't feel comfortable in. 9th chemo!!! Today I am wearing the @sewoveritlondon #soiultimateshiftdress with fabric I bought from my @habbyandlace . I bought the lining at @studio47_somerset_west . There was really guit a bit of #handsewing involved. I made bias tape for the armholes and faced the neckline to ensure a softer feel against my skin. Sometimes the netting can be itchy and it worked . I am glad I put in the extra time. I paired it with Jewelary from @dina.jewellerydesign . As I was going to chemo I wanted to be comfortable, so althought this can be dressed up to go to a very fancy event, I dressed it down and paired it this these yellow sandals from @froggie.shoes . 🌸 Ultimate Shift Dress Add On 🌸 (Ad/pr💞) when I received the fabric for my recent #MimeevaBrandAmbassador make I knew I wanted to make a autumn dress. The lovely teal of the fabric makes it perfect for pairing with black tights for autumnal days or bare legged for the last of the sun. I have made several @sewoveritlondon SewOverItLondon Ultimate Shift Dresses in the past and found a size that works well for me. Size 10 in the bust, 12 in the waist and 13 in the hips. The only change I may look into is button and loop closures, as the eye and hooks can easily open. I wanted to try out the add on pack and specifically the tie cuffs. The dress is a perfect beginner pattern and the add on pack adds on more options. I would love to try the tiered skirt. I saw a polka dot shift dress in a shop the other day with a tier skirt, sleeves and a ruffle at the sleeve head. I really loved the dress and realised I could try and make it! I made the majority of the dress in one evening and the sleeves and cuffs in a couple of hours at the weekend. The fabric is a lovely soft, mid weight Viscose Challis from @MinervaDotCom and is part of Thier exclusive range. I love the floral details on this and how the floral print looks like watercolours on a page. You do need to let this fabric hang before hemming though!! I am really happy with how it turned out and how well it fits. I can't wait to wear it to work and find ways or pairing it with shoes and jumpers / cardies. Found this fabric, knew I needed to own it and that it would make the perfect shift dress. Simple lines and the heavy structure of the fabric allow the print to really shine. Last time I made a shift and added inseam pockets the dress sat weirdly so this time I just added mammoth patch pockets over the side seams. No attempt was made at pattern matching at any point (standard practice here). I love a sleeveless shift dress all year round - just add tights and a cardigan and you're good to go. Sew Over It has some brilliant customer service 🤗 I'd originally bought the Ultimate Shift Dress pattern years ago, made it up and the dress was always just a bit too fitted for me. Emailed once I'd seen they'd expanded their size range (up to a 57" bust and 60" hip) and they immediately sent me the updated files 🎉 I have enough fabric left over to remake the same dress down the line when this one wears out 🥦🩷 Pattern: #soiUltimateShiftDress by @SewOverItLondon sewn in the expanded size range - 18 on top graded to a 20 at the waist and below. The expanded sizing is different to that of the straight sized range (the 18 of the expanded size range matches the 20 for the straight size range). I omitted the back opening and used bias rather than a facing as the fabric is so heavy. There was a little too much gaping under the arms so I unpicked the bias and took in the side seam by 4cm tapering to nothing just below the bust dart. This has caused a slight issue on the back as there is a small pucker / excess of fabric at the armhole but it's not noticeable when the dress is on. Must remember to alter the paper pattern as I love how this fits now...... Fabric: 'vintage' @ikea fabric from 2014 found at @myjetsam in the Newtown Vintage Market - the one in the old theatre.
