Final week of MeMadeMay and it features a lot of new makes. First up is this fresh off the machine @sewoveritlondon Georgie dress hacked to be a maxi length. It’s made in this fabulous deadstock Farm Rio fabric I got from @rainbowfabrickilburn. Using one of their brand ambassadors codes including postage this cost less than £25 which is a far cry from the £250 you’d spend on one from their shop. The fabric is so soft and silky, it feels so lovely to wear but also day appropriate. Sun screen is good but it doesn’t replace clothing for surety! Shiny shorts! I finally finished these after two months of messing around with them. I made the #soiultimatetrousers (shortened, obvs) as they had exactly the look I wanted, but I always have so many fit issues with that pattern. There’s nothing wrong with the pattern itself, I just always find that I have to make so many adjustments to make them fit properly that it ends up being essentially a different pattern. It wasn’t helped by the fabric for these - some kind of coated cotton - which stretches out but not back, creases terribly and shows pin/unpicked stitching holes. Having said that, I kind of love these and they fill a shiny-short-shaped hole in my summer wardrobe, so I’m glad I persevered.

After a week’s hiatus (b#%*$ flu!) I’m back on #memademay2025. Sort of. The weather’s still lovely but a bit cool so layering up this linen #tunicbible dress with #soiultimatetrousers. I made both a while back. I love the dress even if the darts are now too high (damn you gravity!). The fit on the trousers isn’t great, I’ve got a lot to learn there still. But the fabric has a lot of stretch so they’re comfy so that’s something. I added a me-made #libertyfabric bead necklace to the outfit. I kind of like how it works together. One major flaw though - no pockets. I bought the kit for these trousers years ago at the Stitch Festival and finally got around to making them. Arbitrarily decided I wanted to take them to Greece with me and was just finishing them at 11.30pm the night before we went, meaning I hadn’t packed. So pleased to have finally made them. They were my first sewing project where I really enjoyed the whole process and it didn’t feel like a slog getting to the end (possibly because I now have a sewing machine that actually works...). Inspired by the gorgeous and hilarious Marlena at the youtube-channel Marlenasewing, I revisited my planned-but-not nearly-finished capsule wardrobe I was working on a few years ago. Step one was my half finished @sewoveritlondon #soiultimatetrousers 👖 Some minor tweaks were all that was needed and now I have sewed my first pair of pants! 💪 I know that this will be my staple pattern! Love love love them! On the first picture I’m wearing them with a white #ogdencami that was part of the capsule too. I’m also wearing it with my #soiedietop (swipe for pic) I buy all my zippers at a thrift store, and rarely have invisible zippers at home. So I followed a step-by-step in a book I have for a concealed zipper, where you basically make the seam allowance smaller on one side so it will cover the zipper. So yesterday I shared what I made in 2023, so today I’m looking ahead to what I want to make in 2024! Last year I achieved so much more in sewing than I ever thought possible (see my last post!) so this year my focus is less on real tangible goals, and more on slowing down and making fewer, better makes, focusing on fit and honing the skills I developed last year. I also spent last year curating a pretty decent stash, so I want to use that to be more spontaneous this year and not always waiting for the perfect project to use fabric. I’ve seen a lot of people vow not to buy fabric til they have a project for it - I want to do the opposite of that! I love my Sew Over It Ultimate trouser pattern made in to a pair of cropped jeans. This trouser pattern is such a good fit on me. After making several pairs of trousers, I decided to make myself a pair of crops, and I'm really pleased with how they've turned out. I can see myself making more of these. Nothing too exciting, and I do appreciate that black garments are not the best for photos, but watching Palm Royale has me loving the vintage fashions and so I just had to make myself another pair of @sewoveritlondon #ultimatetrousers . I plan to make another pair or two in more interesting colours (like Maxine wears) but since my size is a bit different since the last time I visited this pattern I wanted to get the fit right first. I bought this bengaline twill from @hobbylobby ages ago . . . so long ago that I don't remember what my original plan was . . . so I figured it would work for a wearable muslin. I added a waistband to this pair, as per the instructions on the Sew Over It blog. Clearly I have forgotten just how short I am because this pair is just a tad too high in the waist and just a tad too long in the leg. Still, they are wearable. Me Made May Week 1 I’ve been taking quick photos everyday in May and I am trying to not repeat anything. I might have to change that to not repeat any outfits because I found it hard to not wear my jeans at the weekend! I started off strong with a new to the grid dress. The New Look N6692. This is basically my ideal summer dress - a square neck, an elastic back (it looks like shirring but actually done with elastic), a tiered loose skirt and sleeves. I can see a fair few more of these in my future. I made it with @minervadotcom cotton sateen (gifted). I made a size 14 and used 2.5mtrs of fabric. Then for the rest of the week (and a bit): 2. @byhandlondon flora skirt with a gathered skirt in @minervadotcom viscose linen 3. @closetcorepatterns nicks top in @guthrieghani and @sewoveritlondon ultimate trousers in stretch cotton also from G+G.
