Day 22! I really like my outfit today! One of the best things about me made May is how it has got me to think about my wardrobe differently, and today I am wearing three things that before this morning had never been paired together! The skirt is the @tillybuttons #tatbarielleskirt this is a lovely wraparound skirt with buttons up one side. I’ve always loved this make, but do not wear it anywhere near enough. The top is the @sewoveritlondon #soisilkcami this is another brilliant SOI pattern and such a wardrobe staple. It’s made in a teal/green crepe. I love the feel of crepe fabric, it always feels so luxurious! The jacket is a re-wear of my @namedclothing #aavablazer it’s been so nice wearing this so much this month. I made a self drafted tiered, maxi skirt. Though "self drafted" is probably overstating it...I sewed some rectangles together. Today’s Open Sewing Class with Sue, Glennis & Jordan saw everyone finish sewing their garments! Jordan joined us for the first time, sewing a @paper_theory Zadie wrap dress for the second time. She had a couple of bits to unpick & repair as well as sleeve & skirt hems to press & sew. The gorgeous fabric is from @fabricgodmother Sue finished this lovely @sewoverit Silk Cami Top, just in time for the hot weather. She understitched the facings, sewed the shoulders with that clever one-inside-the-other trick for a clean finish & then the hem. It looks lovely tucked in or left loose. She sewed it in a viscose fabric that we now have in a navy colourway with pink flowers. Glennis finished the tiny dress for her granddaughter, sewing buttonholes for the first time & adding sweet bows to the shoulders. Glennis decided to sew something for herself, choosing a summer top with ties on the shoulders. 🫖 For my love of tea 🫖 Hacking this @sewoveritlondon #soisilkcami into a dress (hopefully 🤞) So far I've split the back piece to include a seam down the back (I remembered to add in the seam allowance ✌️) and I've created a wider opening at the neck with ties, to assist with getting the dress on and off more easily. I brought 5 sets like this on holiday, in blue, green, a slightly different green (🤨), pink and mickey print! It's the @sewoveritlondon silk cami and @fridaypatterncompany saguaro set shorts. Another scrap busting project, the Sew Over It ‘silk’ cami. The fabric is a soft pink viscose and the remnant that measured 73cm x 150cm. In order to get out all the pattern pieces I had to cut the back facing in two parts (photo 2). I added an extra 1cm to the bodice at the bust to give a bit more room for the ‘ladies’ and that has worked well. I also used a lightweight interfacing on the facings to give the fabric some structure as it is very soft and drapey. Another entry for #auldaugust from #magamsewalong as I’ve used a length of ochre linen which @theliliesofthefield bought for me from @wearethefabricstore during her Australia trip at least four years ago. I always intended to use it for #pietrashorts but a combination of the UK heatwave and using a small piece for my recent nature top spurred me into action. I almost completed them in an evening but have just finished the in seam and hems this afternoon. I used bias binding I’ve made from #ankarafabric to edge the facing and on the hems. I found the only shade in my garden (under the apple tree) and paired it with a #soisilkcami that I made at least five years ago. This is the Silk Cami by @sewoveritlondon. I really enjoyed sewing this pattern as the instructions were really clear overall (I did have to double check somewhere else that I had definitely understood how to do french seams and once I read their explanations again they made perfect sense 🙃😊). This is such a versatile garment that I have been wearing both at work and when going out with friends. It is definitely beginner friendly, just be careful when joining the shoulder straps together as I managed to do it the wrong way around the first time 😅. #memademay day 28. This make is from 2019 and one of my all time favorite makes. I had a very specific style of jumpsuit in mind and was so pleased with the result I made two (the other one in a black linen/tencel blend with wooden buttons). The bottom are the @tillybuttons #marigoldjumpsuit. Added 2 cm or so to the seat and took out a massive wedge from the front. For the top I once again used the @sewoveritlondon #soisilkcami as a base, but with a v-neck and back and button placket, making at least 4 toiles. Also had both children have a go at taking pictures, daughter actually making an effort and son deliberately leaving out my face. A lovely & busy Open Sewing Class with Sue, Hilder & Glennis today. Sue came to class wearing her me-made trousers & with the bag she made in class & her cardigan was sewn for her by her daughter 🧡 Today Sue started sewing a @sewoverit Silk Cami Top that she’d cut out some time ago from a viscose fabric we have now sold out of. After sewing the sides, she got the facing sewn together & sewn to the outer. Viscose is a faff to work with but so dreamy to wear. Hilder wanted to make an alteration to the yoke of a dress she’s making, so after unpicking, we traced off a new larger piece & adjusted the shape to prevent it slipping off the shoulders. She cut new pieces, interfaced & sewed them all together. Then a try on to check that it goes over the head & stays in position. All good so she’ll carry on with that at home. Then she quickly traced off & cut out a top to sew at home. Hilder is a Wonder-sewer! Glennis joined her first Open Sewing Class today after recently doing the Sew A Tote Bag Class. She is making a cute little dress for her granddaughter. She traced off the pattern pieces to keep the rest of the sizes complete & then learned how to place, pin & cut the pieces. Run up a little @sewoveritlondon Silk Cami in a beautiful black Japanese Cupro from @rainbowfabrickilburn My first go with anything slippy, and it's not bad. I had to make an adjustment in the length of the shoulder straps, that also took in a little extra fabric across the back neckline, otherwise it was all straight from the pattern pieces. Working on something a little special this week. As you might have spotted on my stories my lovely Nan passed away two weeks ago and the funeral is this Friday. She was an excellent seamstress which she passed the love for onto my mum and then down to me. She also loved to wear colour, so we are wearing colour to celebrate her this week and I thought it would be lovely to stitch up a dress too. Perfectly timed for this heatwave. Some basic, timeless silk tanks that I absolutely love. This is the @sewoveritlondon Silk Cami pattern in a straight 8/10 with the seam raised 1/2 at the armscye. I also extended the front facing by several inches to fall just below my chest because it otherwise hit at an awkward length. It looked weird and I had enough extra, I started over! Back in August I made a #SOISilkCami out of this robin's egg blue linen from @linenlab.co.kr. I thought I'd be cute and finish the edges with bias binding, but it looked like grade A garbage 🤣 So this time I did the facing like you're supposed to, and the finishes look so nice!

This is probably my most worn make, dating from 2021. The bottom half of this jumpsuit is the @tillybuttons #sewingmarigold, the top a very heavily modified @sewoveritlondon #soisilkcami. I used the front pattern piece for both the back and the front, drafted a v-neck and added a button band. The fabric is a tencel from @madeline_de_stoffenmadam. It dries incredibly quickly and still looks good after being washed hundreds of times. While I’m working on fitting…I made adjustments for my narrow shoulder/hollow back to the @sewoveritlondon silk cami pattern. After a toile, this is the result. Love that I can get this pattern out of remnants. This is a @ladymcelroyfabrics viscose that I made a shirt dress from years ago! I took about 2” from the back neckline and found the @byhandlondon blog post on gaping back neckline adjustments really helpful. I also shortened it by 4” as SOI patterns are drafted for a height of 5’6. The only thing I’m not keen on with this pattern is the facing. Behold! The very nearly self drafted dress that I very nearly ruined! As with the green jumpsuit, I used the @sewoveritlondon #soisilkcami as a base: Use the front piece for both front and back, draw a v-neck for the back, widen the front for a button band and adjust the facings accordingly. Somehow I messed up the back facing despite having made this before twice, leading to a mild panic attack and then adjusting the back piece with the tried and tested method of eyeballing it. Also, I cut out four pocket pieces, overlocked the edges and then forgot all about them. So no pockets ☹️. The skirt and waistband are selfdrafted but really very simple. Despite the pocket mishap and stressful reconfiguring of the back I do really like it: Simple but with just enough interesting details (a.k.a buttons) to not be bland. #soisilkcami #soisilkcamihack #sewingover40
