It’s that time of year when we all look forward to the year ahead and the sewing community look to their plans for what they are going to make in the year ahead. Having compiled my plans it’s interesting to see that I have included 3 pairs of trousers and one of my aims this year is to make some well fitting trousers. I met up with my oldest friends last weekend (we’ve known each other for over 20 years) and wore a #memade outfit! #memademay day 14: the one with my favourite jumpsuit The weather is starting to warm up so it's time to give one of my favourite ever memades its first outing of the year. Honestly, I love this jumpsuit so much that I'll be genuinely sad if/when it wears out or it no longer fits. It's a mash-up of the @sewoveritlondon #soiultimateculottes and the bodice from a @seamwork pattern (I honestly can't remember which one) made from some stunning @riflepaperco rayon. I think I made it during the first summer I was here in Mississippi, so that makes it six years old. I've done a couple of small repairs to the facing but otherwise it's holding up well. Fluffy jumper and culottes! Carrying on my interesting makes phase...I finally sewed up this incredibly fluffy sweater knit. After the carnage caused by cutting, it was actually pretty easy to sew. I used the #SewingBillie pattern but ditched all the cuffing to keep it simple. The culottes were a kinda wearable toile. They were pretty easy sew though the fabric is super bouncy and didn't have the drape I wanted. I might reposition the zip as I'm not sure I can handle no pockets! I made these Sew Over It Ultimate Culottes at the weekend using Pound Fabrics polyester suiting in Royal Blue. I’ve had the pattern for years but for some reason I’ve put off making them. I’ve cut them from 2m even though the pattern recommends something like 2.5m. I’m really happy with the fit although I might make them again in a fabric with more drape something like the viscose challis would be nice. I’ve also seen on Instagram that people have lengthened them to make palazzo pants. I’m wearing it today (last photo) with my Itch to Stitch Lisbon cardigan which I made last year in Poundfabrics cable knit. I love when Sew Over It have one of their sales. Not only do I get to save a little bit of money, but I get to try something I perhaps wouldn't generally sew. That's the case with these Ultimate Culottes. I had been looking at this pattern for a while but just couldn't make up my mind. I loved them, but I don't generally wear baggy trousers, as I always feel they look too big on me. I finally took the plunge in their last sale and bought this pattern, and I'm so glad that I did! The only trousers I've made before have been the Ultimate Trouser pattern, and like that, this pattern is a very straightforward sew. Following the finished measurements guide I graded from a 14 waist to a 12 hip. When I added the waist facing though, I felt I could do with loosing a little bit extra on the waist, so just made all the darts a tiny bit bigger and the waist fitted me perfectly, so I could probably size down to a full 12. My fabric is a viscose from Hobbycraft. #memademay2023 day 23 Fun fact: today's outfit is at least five years old, and is almost entirely from @sewoveritlondon The top - made from some fabric bought from the old Sew Over It shop on Essex Road - was originally from the Sew Over It vintage book. I say originally as it's much altered since then. It started out longer and with a band and ties around the hem, but it just wasn't me. So I shortened it, but kept the band. I still didn't wear it. Last year I finally chopped the band off completely, and now it gets much more wear as a loose, semi-cropped top. The trousers are the #soiultimateculottes made from a fairly heavy twill of unknown provenance. My second pair of @sewoverit ultimate culottes. I feel like a student swishing around in my flares again! Memories of 70s for sure 🥰 Fabric is medium weight denim from @kandjcrafts1990 in Cwmbran. Two pattern edits: - to reduce the width of flare from hip to hem as I think these are far more flattering … being curvy and short means I really do need to consider the silhouette; - and to taper to size smaller at waist. A very straight forward sew as I’d made before and thus could overlock all pieces before sewing up … a definite win as wanted to press seams open. As a #soipatterninsider I get access to all their fabulous patterns. Here is the #soilibbyshirt which has a partial collar stand grown on sleeves and a boxy fit. Collar is a bit tricky but there is a great tutorial on the Sew over it stitch school and a sew along of the whole shirt on their youtube channel. I cut both the front and back at right angles to the grain, as that was the only way I could make it work, but it does mean it has less give than it should. It's fine as long as I don't eat too much. This pattern is a total @sewoveritlondon pattern mash up - I combined the Lea dress bodice (with pleats rather than darts), Poppy playsuit sleeves and Ultimate Culottes from the waist down, narrowing the legs (a bit too much over my thighs to be able to sit down comfortably!) I’ve had this red fabric for a few years, originally intended to be another Lea dress, but I finally decided on a jumpsuit. An all red jumpsuit seemed like a bold choice but I think it has a wow factor. I absolutely fell in love with this fabric when I saw it on @sewsewsewuk. I didn’t know if the colours would suit me but it was screaming to be a dress. I did the next best thing and made a co-ord. this is the @truebias Ogden cami and the @sewoveritlondon Lizzie skirt.
