Aaaaaand she’s finished… sort of. This is my Jessie Coatigan from @sewoveritlondon, that I’ve been making on and off for the last week or so (hot weather allowing!). I say she’s almost finished, because the only thing she needs is a jolly good press - but not today. After 5.5 hours of sewing, I’m pooped. This was a practice piece, in some Deadstock Linen Blend fabric that I got from @minervadotcom a couple of months ago. As much as I love Sew Over It (and I adore their team!) I have to say, this was not the most straightforward pattern of theirs I’ve tried. I struggled with the add-on lining, because the collar and facings are an unusual shape, and I sometimes felt like the instructions weren’t very clear (imo). It’s a shame, because I wanted to make another one in some lovely bright fabric that I’ve ordered from Minerva, to take with me to Paris next month (the fabric hasn’t arrived yet, so it’s looking dicey anyway!). I made a size 24 to account for my weight gain, but I think I could’ve got away with a 22. I ended up bodging the lining (and it shows!) because I couldn’t work out the instructions. Oh, for a sewalong or tutorial for making it with the lining! The lining fabric itself was a nightmare, because it frayed at the touch of air and at times I looked like I was covered with candy gloss!! That’s what I get for going cheap (again, it’s only a practice run). A super cosy and practical make! This is the #soijessiecoatiganfat in a lovely warm boiled wool from @minervadotcom. The heavy satin lining is from @rainbowfabrickilburn 💚 I am not normally drawn to the oversized drop shoulder style, but this is so warm and comfortable that it is like wearing a hug. A season appropriate make for my first of 2025 - a second #soijessiecoatigan, in this pink/charcoal stripe. Its a light wool, so will hopefully be much warmer than my existing version which I absolutely love, but is quite lightweight. I've also downloaded the #soijessieaddon, to line it at and add to the warmth! Jessie coatigan 🪡 I came across this gorgeous fabric and it was unlike anything I'd come across, I then fell in love with the sample and had to have my own quilted wool jacket! I took a while to pick the right pattern as i knew the thickness of this fabric would make it a bit trickier to sew. It needed to be simple but easily wearable in different settings and transitional as we approach Spring. I really liked the simple shape of the Jessie coatigan and as an avid lover of Sew Over It patterns I knew what I was getting. I was correct about the fabric being difficult to sew! It was also just batting on one side which meant it had to be pressed on the right side. I will say I found the collar fairly fiddly but I do often struggle with "sew to the circle" type of steps as they require precision! As I did the lined version I did make life more difficult for myself as I accidentally attached the lining before I should have so there was a hefty amount of bulk to manhandle around the machine. The result is fairly bulky but really happy with it! I was worried of feeling overly padded which has put me off quilted fabrics before. I don't think I'll be making another quilted jacket in a hurry but after a cold and blustery and drizzly day in the lake District I can absolutely testify that it kept me ample warm and dry! I used up a bit more fabric than required due to some mix ups with outer/lining pattern pieces but thankfully my local fabric shop came to the rescue (twice!) and just in time too before they sadly closed 😔 so this jacket will act as a nice final purchase from in-person Fabrix! A little adventure - sprog is with her grandparents so @edwardneillambert and I snuck to North Berwick for the first time in forever for fish and chips by the sea, gifts and baubles from @timeandtidestores and getting happily carried away in @chandlersnb - I’d never made it further than the beautiful artisan dyed yarn before, but this time explored the back of the shop and bought enough for a lovely big crochet blanket for the sofa. I was also wearing my newly finished @sewoveritlondon #soijessiecoatigan for the first time - pattern and materials were my Christmas present from Neil. I’m just thrilled with it - perfect for light pootling around the shops. Having spent yesterday tracing and cutting the pieces for the @sewoveritlondon Jessie Coatigan and lining, today’s task was supposed to be tracing and cutting the pieces for another pair of Peggy Trousers (sadly, my body shape has changed in the last couple of months and I need to cut a bigger size than my last three pairs 😢). However, when your sewing space has a temperature of almost 35 degrees, making it far too hot to even spend a few minutes in there (despite an open door and a fan at full blast), I decided to leave it till later, sit in the cool and play with the Magic Mockup in my Stash Hub (that I signed up for at the Stitch Festival in March and still hadn’t got round to using! 😂). What a great idea it is! The fabric is an olive-coloured linen viscose blend from @minervadotcom, and the coatigan will have a cream poly silk lining. Today's weather has taken a bit of a turn which gave me the opportunity to wear my Jessie Coatigan from @sewoveritlondon I made this a few weeks ago (on a beautiful warm sunny day) and thought I wouldn't be wearing it at least until September, but UK weather being what it is I got to wear it today. Made using a wool boucle from @poundfabrics for the bargain price of £4.99 per meter. I also purchased the Jessie Coatigan add-on lining pattern. The Jessie Coatigan from @sewoveritlondon has now a lining add on! I made mine in a boiled wool from @megastoffen and lined it with a viscose. The instructions are very easy to follow, and even if you made a previous Jessie, there are instructions how to add lining to a Jessie already made. I went with a size smaller than my usual SOI size, from 12 to 10. At the beginning of the year i made the @sewoveritlondon jessie coatigan with the add -on lining. I used a green boucle for the outer coat. For the lining i used a viscose i got in my @sewhayleyjane box. My first sew over it Jessie coatigan made for my daughter in a boucle fabric from Leon's Manchester. The make was straightforward to sew. My only issues were getting my overlocker to work on the thick fabric. I had to adjust all the settings and disconnect the blade to get it to work. Here is a bit of a fun make! This is the @sewoveritlondon Jessie Coatigan with the lining add on. I wanted something relaxed and comfy that was loose and unfitted and the Jessie was just the ticket. Minerva kindly gave me the main fabric and I used a satin from my stash for the lining. This is the Minerva Core Range Super Soft Shearling Fleece Fur Fabric in Ginger. The name is a bit of a mouthful but is very descriptive of the fabric! It is very lightweight and airy rather than dense and solid. The pocket construction was new to me and a wee bit tricky to figure out so maybe fluffy fur AND slippy satin was not the best combo to learn a new technique with but after MUCH pondering I eventually got there! I was getting pretty frustrated and found the instructions confusing. Out of interest, which do you find most useful when following instructions - the words or the pictures? I am definitely more of a pictures person and I wonder if that is one of the reasons I got confused as it seems to me like SOI put more emphasis on the written. What is your experience? I am very pleased with the finished make but did have a tiny wee 10pm crisis about whether or not it was flattering. I have been doing A LOT of work undoing unhelpful body image conditioning over the last few years. Sewing beautiful joyful clothes has been miraculously healing but the old demons do pop up every now and again. When you are fat, society says that it is important to only wear ‘flattering’ clothes. And of course by that they mean clothes that make you look smaller. Smaller being the holy grail. It says that you are better if there is less of you. I texted my friend @tea_operated with my doubts and she very kindly, and wisely, said she thought I would like it tomorrow. And I did. This is a long overdue post. It is the Jesse Coatigan by @sewoverit in an aubergine wool boucle. I started on it over a year ago, hit some bumps and left it a good while before I got it out again and finished it around Easter time. At that time spring and the warmer weather came and it went into the closet again before I got to taking pictures of it. Though it was a lengthy make it was an enjoyable one. SOI patterns are always great to follow and it was fun to sew with this kind of fabric which was a first for me. At the point of starting this coat, the pattern was an unlined coat, but in this wool fabric I wanted it lined so I googled around to find tutorials on how to add it, and I found a pretty good one on @tillyandthebuttons blog that I used. Even though the instructions on Tilly’s blog were really good I still ran into some snags, especially struggled with the sleeves. I’m pretty sure I did something wrong because the sleeves are quite short, and I’m little😄, in addition to that I think I’ve twisted the lining slightly too. Anyhoo…it’s fully wearable and it is a perfect transition garment in Norwegian autumn and spring weather.
