Here's my finished @sewoveritlondon skirt!! I absolutely love this fabric, so I made it as my first sewing project. It's the full circle skirt, and was super easy. I added a gold lining and some pockets as well to make it even better! Oh, and I also widened the waistband to make it extra fancy. JULIA BUSTIER I had some left over fabric from making the #soifullcircleskirt so decided to make a top to make the outfit complete. I found this pattern on Etsy. It is an easy pattern, although it took a bit figuring out how to print it in the correct scale. It is a lined bustier with an open ended zipper at the back. I toiled it a couple of times first as the back was not wide enough, I added about 6 inches in total to the back. Funny enough, the front did not need any changes. I went to the last wedding of the year this weekend and am proud to say I achieved my goal of making all my dresses for this year’s weddings 🥳🏆 Sadly forgot to get any photos at the (very beautiful) venue, so had to settle for a couple taken round the back of our budget hotel. Video included as I think this one is best appreciated dynamically, swipe for still if you’re that way inclined. This is a real Frankenstein’s monster of a dress. The bodice is a hack of the #m7974 by @mccallpatterncompany with the button placket taken out and a side zip inserted in its place (and a few more mods/fit adjustments). The bodice and underskirt (a simple self drafted A line) are both in a baby blue satin from @minervadotcom. The over skirt is the #soifullcircleskirt gathered and attached to the bodice instead of a waistband. That and the gargantuan sleeves (which I self drafted) are in a semi-sheer fabric I found in the organza bin at @abakhanfabrics though I’m not sure it really is organza, it feels and handles a lot like satin. I decided it was about time I tackled zips in my sewing journey and chose the Sew Over It Full Circle Skirt, which is one of my #makenine2021 items. * I decided on the simple centred zip rather than the invisible or lapped options. Turns out the zip part wasn’t that complicated but I really struggled with attaching the waistband around the zip (specifically steps 37-39). I just couldn’t get my head around the instructions. In the end I watched a couple of general videos and figured something out. I also didn’t attached the hook and eye correctly so need to work on this! I think it looks ok but would love to be able to do it properly. #skirts I’ve had three skirts 90% complete for at least a year. So my goal last weekend was to try and complete. Several YouTube videos on waistbands later and I got them finished. . 1. The blue with white dots is the box-pleat skirt from one of the books accompanying #gbsb from a few years ago. Fabric is from my stash and heavyish, so works well. . 2. Black with red hearts is #soifullcircleskirt Fabric was a destash buy from @emmajaniejay_destash . The waistband is not a great fit and I struggled with the hem on a full circle. So reckon I’ll do something more with this. . 3. Paisley skirt is simplicity2451 version C. Fabric bought a long time ago, either cotton or poly cotton. I bought this pattern and printed it out at least two years ago. Then nothing happened. And then…nothing continued to happen. Until late February when I looked at the pattern pieces just sitting there and decided to do something about it. I bought two yards of raven chambray. (Raven might be grey. It might be black. It might be dark charcoal heather. I don’t know. Ask Roy Kent.) Honestly, it all came together pretty easily. This pattern is very easy to work with. The fabric is an absolute joy. (I love chambray. Love it.) I chose to add pockets to the skirt because all skirts need pockets. The pockets hide in the fullness of the skirt, which is great…especially when you’re cantoring during Holy Week and your pockets are full of Kleenex. My second @sewoveritlondon full circle skirt in an autumnal cotton poplin ❤️ The pattern I really want to have a stab at is the #soibettydress - a fitted bodice along with the full circle skirt, with both darts and an concealed/invisible zip. Given I’ve tried the skirt (and I love it) and have had a stab at darts, the next thing I needed to attempt was the concealed zip. The full circle skirt was perfect project as it allows for the insertion of a regular zip or a concealed zip. As a subscriber to the @sewoveritlondon Stitch School, I had access to Lisa’s step by step tutorial on how to insert an concealed zip and it was just what I needed. Stitch school also has a step by step tutorial on how to sew the full circle skirt but I didn’t follow that as I found that the written instructions were perfect for me. The Stitch School video demystified the insertion of the concealed zip. I don’t think my first attempt is perfect but practice will (hopefully) make it better 🤞🏽. I’m now equipped to attempt the #BettyDress - except that I don’t know how to make any adjustments for fittings - but that’s a challenge for another day. My first ever wearable toile, and I love it! Most of the patterns I want to attempt have zips, so I wanted to have a go at inserting a regular zip into a garment but not be fearful of it going wrong. I saw that the @sewoveritlondon full circle skirt was a “quick” sew which would let me practice that. I felt like I was zooming through the construction until I got to the hem…3.5m of hemming! 🤯 The skirt would have an even bigger “swish factor” with a fabric with more drape.
