Lois Dress
Sew Over It

Lois Dress
Lois is a smart, chic dress with a faux-wrap, V-shaped neckline and cute collar. The bodice features a combination of darts and pleats to reduce bulk around the bust and waist. Available in two hem lengths - below the knee with short side slits, or a shorter 60s-inspired length that hits above the knee. The dress has no zips or buttons and uses elasticated back waist for fit.

I’ve tried numerous times to try and get some photos to show off this gorgeous SOI Gabriella fabric due to the bad light. Next to last make of 2022. The sleeve detail of the Lois Dress is much easier than I thought and looks so good 😍. My new favourite work dress #sewoverit #soilondon #soiloisdress #sewover50

And finally my new work dress. #soiloisdress @sewoveritlondon. I've just paid to have some more sew over it patterns printed. Love their subtle vintage vibe and hopefully I'll have more made by me items in my wardrobe soon #hocwintersewing

I decided several months ago to abandon my #makenine2020 as over half the items on there were meant for our 10 year wedding anniversary trip to Mauritius in June which obvs never happened because...rona 😢 So instead I present my alternative makenine, made up by me 😂, which is a celebration of my continued fan-girl obsession with @sewoveritlondon and another year as one of their Pattern Insiders. Sew Over It release a new pdf pattern every month and as Pattern Insiders we get early access (and free printing) so we can make up the garment ready for launch day. There is no obligation to make the pattern every month but as SOI patterns usually suit and fit me so well I do end up making most of them! This year I made 9 out of the 12 that were released. The ones I didn’t make were the Farrah boiler suit (not my style, I hate jumpsuits), the Suraya jacket (lovely pattern but just not my style at all) and the Luna PJs (I was planning to make these for my sister for Christmas but the fabric I ordered on 31st October never arrived in time! 😱) So these are the 9 that I did make (L-R, top to bottom rows): 1️⃣ Lois Dress in crepe from @sewoveritlondon 2️⃣ Audrey Top in cotton jersey from @guthrieghani 3️⃣ Freia Blouse in satin from @sewisfaction 4️⃣ Giselle Dress in viscose twill from @sewoveritlondon 5️⃣ Lucy Dress in bamboo jersey from @raystitch 6️⃣ Maisie Dress in cotton sateen from India 7️⃣ Peggy Trousers in twill garbardine from @minervadotcom 8️⃣ Esther Blouse in viscose from @sewmesunshine.uk 9️⃣ Roxy Jumper in ponte knit from @sewoveritlondon On top of this I also made all 5 of the garments in their Summer Dreaming eBook, their paper pattern release the 1960s Coat and 2 of their Stitch School releases!!! A big thank you to the amazing team at SOI for releasing such a lovely collection of patterns this year and a special shout-out to the fabulous Nicole @nrwx who works like a trojan every month to get the patterns and instructions ready! #sewoverit #sewoveritlondon #soipatterninsiders #soiloisdress #soiaudreytop #soifreiablouse #soigiselledress #soilucydress #soimaisiedress #soipeggytrousers #soiestherblouse #soiroxyjumper

Day 1 of #memademay2020 Hello everyone! I’m so happy we’re doing this challenge again, it’s my favourite month on the sewing calendar. I just love seeing everyone in their day to day life wearing handmade garments. Welcome to my sewing room, the room where the best light in the house is. I’m wearing what has become one of my favourite garments: my #soiloisdress in #ladymcelroyfabric. The dress has a lot of elements I really like: the wrap bodice with folds, the collar, the flat front and elasticated back (so comfortable!) and the fabric probably is my favourite so far. The colour is just so pretty to me and the print fits so well with that. It just wrinkles like a bleeped out word. I don’t think I ever had anything that wrinkles like this and as someone who hates ironing that’s not a good thing. But as I love the dress I am prepared to deal with that and I have worn this dress at least once a week since making it. I have been dressing as usual though we are in isolation and I think that speaks volumes about 1. the high comfort level of my dresses and 2. the high comfort level of my tights.

We give our lovely team of Pattern Insiders early access to our new patterns, so they can sew them for you to see on release day ✨ Yesterday their fantastic Lois Dresses started popping up on the #soiloisdress hashtag, and we love how they all put their own spin on it to suit their style and their lives. So excited to post photos of the #soiloisdress The Lois dress is the latest pattern from #sewoveritlondon and I love it! It had enough challenges to keep me interested—especially as I made it in a very lightweight rayon—and it’s so comfortable to wear! Love the way the collar sits. Love the split cuffs, and love the way the pleats and darts work to make the wrap bodice fit. Added a tie belt in photos 1 & 2 to define the waist and wrap a little more. Oh—and I added pockets—of course. #soipatterninsiders #sewover50 #canadasews #memadeeveryday #memadewardrobe #sewingmakesmehappy #ithaspockets

#MeMadeMay2021 day 3. I’m wearing my #SOILoisDress in a viscose from #LadyMcElroy. I made this in February of last year. I made a size 16 then and have now taken it in, so I don’t know what size it is now. I love this pattern. It has a lot of elements I really like: the wrap bodice with folds, the collar, the flat front and elasticated back (so comfortable!) I love the colour of the fabric. Not a fan of the excessive wrinkling this one does. Still it must have had #30wears as it’s been in good rotation ever since making it. . . . Image description: Wilma is a tall white woman. She has dark hair that comes to her shoulders. She has blue eyes and pale skin. She is smiling broadly and has her left hand posed on her waist. Wilma is wearing a mock wrapdress with a collar, long sleeves and a straight skirt with a ruffle at the hem. It comes up slightly above the knee. It has a swan print against a blue backdrop. Wilma is wearing black pumps. Wilma is standing in her room. It’s a small room. There’s a large white dollshouse with a black roof to your right and two white bookcases with glass and doors to your left. The bookcases are filled with fabric. There’s a light blue comfortable chair in the background. There are a lot of framed pictures on the wall behind her. The floor is light wood.

Day 10 of documenting my #DIYOOTD for #TheCuratedCloset and I’m wearing my #soiloisdress that was gifted to me (a year ago?) for being part of the #soipatterninsiders Broken record here, but this is one of my great loves in my wardrobe. Elements I love: wrap bodice, collar (my hair is covering it), slim skirt (it’s becoming pretty clear that circle skirts and gathered skirts are not what I love), colour of the fabric, elasticated waist for comfort. Not as stiff as yesterday, still unable to raise my right arm above shoulder height.

Last weekend I made the #soihaxbyskirt from @sewoveritlondon in a floaty stippled rust viscose from @jennystitchesfabrics and the @mhwpatterns #thinkpinkcardigan from @lovesewingmag in a fine black knit from @minervadotcom. I added extra on the haxby pattern as I was concerned it wouldn't fit me but I ended up making it a bit too big. When I make it again I will see if I can find a faster way to insert the godet panels. This weekend for #magamsewalong I juggled in the #soiloisdress in a silky polyester fabric from @jennystitchesfabrics, alongside a couple of quick #selfless sews for @amelia.hellyer and helping @rosieehook with her sewing. I had a fight with the Lois dress collar (and lost), I should have read the pattern instructions properly instead of assuming I knew what to do! Lesson learned for next time. #jugglingjune #isew #jennystitchesmakers #minervamakes #sewover50 #sewistsofinstagram

First day ‘back’ at work today and I realised that ‘Gertie’ was going to be undressed for a virtual meeting 🙈. I already had this version of the sewoverit Lois top cut out so last night I made it up. The fabric is a beautiful @atelierbrunette fabric that I have had for a while. The top was lovely to make and only took a couple of hours to do. Gertie was very happy to be wearing something for the meeting and I have already got plans for a second version 🙂 #sewover50 @sewoveritlondon #soiloisdress #sewingismytherapy #sewisolated2020 #sewcialists #sewingisforeveryone

Went out for lunch for my sister's birthday, so it was the perfect opportunity to wear my new @sewoveritlondon Lois Dress 😍 I honestly didnt think that I would love it as much as do! It's got a great cut and is so flattering with the flat front and elasticated waist back. Even for bigger busts, the wrap bodice fits and falls incredibly well 🙌 The split cuff on the sleeves is another gorgeous design detail which just elevates it. Felt so good wearing it, which is pretty priceless ☺ Definitely going to make so many more! Fabric is also from @sewoveritlondon 📸 Photo credit @thesimonwalsh

One of the interesting features of the Lois Dress is the pleats on the faux wrap of bodice to create shaping...because I can always use some help in that department 🤣 Even though rayon or crepe were the suggested fabrics, I went with Chambray from @minervadotcom to aim for a different look. I love that the chambray sewed up well and worked with the pattern. #soiloisdress #sewoverit #soipatterninsiders #sewersofinstagram #sewersgonnasew #pdfsewingpattern #makersofinstagram #sewistofinstagram #sewist #isew #isewmyownclothes #memade #memadeeveryday2020 #minervamakers

Today I’m wearing my #SOILoisDress in a viscose from #LadyMcElroy. I made this in 2020. I love this pattern and I’m contemplating making another version of it. It has a lot of elements I really like: the wrap bodice with folds, the collar, the flat front and elasticated back (so comfortable!) I love the colour and softness of the fabric, but not a fan of the excessive wrinkling this one does. It does make me wear this less as it always takes some extra time to prepare this for wearing. Pattern by @sewoveritlondon Fabric from @sherwoodsfabrics Image description: Wilma is a tall white woman. She has dark hair that comes to her shoulders. She has blue eyes and pale skin. She is smiling broadly and has her left hand posed on her waist. Wilma is wearing a mock wrapdress with a collar, long sleeves and a straight skirt with a ruffle at the hem. Sew Over It is looking for new #soipatterninsiders and specifically BIPOC and disabled makers to create a better representation of our maker community (there’s a link in my bio and their bio to the sign up, deadline tomorrow). Pattern insiders make the newest @sewoveritlondon pattern so that when the pattern is released you can see it made up on a variety of people and get a better idea of how the pattern might fit you. I’ve been a pattern insider for over a year now and it has been a real pleasure to do. I signed up to get some more spontaneity and excitement in my sewing. You don’t need to make every pattern (though you can). When I’m busy or tired I opt out and when I do have the two weeks time and energy to make something I opt in. The team now offers to print your pattern for you or have a local to you printer print it for you if printing would be an issue for you. Sizing goes from UK 8 to UK30. There’s a facebook group in which we can discuss everything to do with the patterns which is a very nice and supportive group. The team itself is very approachable and filled with kind and attentive people. I so far have ended up with three patterns that are amongst my favourite patterns ever (the #soimeredithdress #soiloisdress and #soikittydress pictured here), but I also got to explore some patterns I might not have tried otherwise and got me out of my rut and comfort zone. The next pattern is also a really good one! So come join us, we’d love to have you 😊

Let's do the time warp! One of the things we really love about sewing our own wardrobes is drawing on fashions from decades and icons gone by 💗 Take a walk through time with these three vintage-inspired patterns – which is your style? 🎀 Straight out of the 1950s the Betty Dress is one of our most popular patterns. With its fitted bodice, voluminous skirt, and boat neckline, it truly transports us to the era. ✨ Inspired by the wardrobe of Audrey Hepburn, these Cigarette Pants are a timeless classic. The gently tapered trousers finish at the ankle and are a great make for anyone looking to take their trouser making skills to the next level – we're picturing them with an Edie (or Audrey 😉) Top to finish the look, Audrey-style. 🥰 The Lois Dress just happens to be what Lisa will be sewing up in Monday's YouTube Sewalong, and this pattern has just the right combination of modern-meets-vintage for a contemporary office or special occasion look. With a slight 70s flair and faux-wrap, it's a lovely lightweight dress to see you through spring and into summer. [Image One: Hildy has her arms out wide as she twirls in a purple Betty Dress with large cream flowers. Image Two: Salma is standing casually wearing a white Bilberry Top and navy Cigarette Trousers with white trainers. Image Three: Lisa is standing with her hands on her hips wearing a black Lois Dress with red detailing. She has styled it with black tights and boots.]

Finally done with my Lois dress! I was given the pattern from @sewoveritlondon as part of their Pattern Insider group. A month late but I'm proud of myself for finally finishing a sewing project. Lost my sewjo at the beginning of the year and this is the first dress I've made in over three months. Decided to shorten the sleeves so I will get more wear out of it and it's easier to wear it with cardigans. The fabric is cotton lawn from @textileexpress Was looking for rayon fabric but when I saw this awesome women print I knew it would be perfect for this dress 😀 Swipe to see details of the dress and different colour combinations 🧡💛💖 #soiloisdress #sewoverit #soishowoff #textileexpress #sewhappycolor2020 #wearhappycolor2020 #visytokiga #vuxnasytokar #skandinaviasyr #sewqueer #sewcialists #memadeeveryday #noveltyprint

As soon as @sewoveritlondon released the Lois Dress pattern and I saw Lisa's stunning cover version in pink leopard print, I had to have it! It's a fab pattern with lots of lovely details. One of my favourites is the collar 😍 Obviously complete with a @kylieandthemachine label. Just the hemming to go 😁

#ad #gifted I’m still away at the moment, but just before I left I got a sneak peek of the new @sewoveritlondon pattern - introducing the Lois dress!! I was so excited to sew this, because it seemed like the perfect answer my eternal problem of work wear. This is office appropriate but you could still easily wear it to the pub after work, which is my kind of office style!! Lois has elastic at the back of the dress, which makes it fitted without needing a zip or buttons, which I love. You can see a back view in my stories. It’s an intermediate make, with collar and cuffs, but not too tricky. I made this in a day and a half (not including cutting it out). I added pockets, did a small swayback and had to tweak the front but otherwise this is a straight size 12. The pattern did change slightly after I finished it, so I probably won’t need to tweak the front when I make it next time. Sew Over It kindly gifted me the pattern as one of their Pattern Insiders. The fabric is a Dashwood from @sewmesunshine.uk that I bought at Harriet’s first open day and was saving specially for a work dress. #soiloisdress #sewoverit #sewoveritlondon #soishowoff #ootd #diyootd #madebyme #isew #slowfashion #instasew #sewistsofinstagram #makeitsewcial #sewcialists #thehandmadeparade #sewing #sewingismysuperpower

New Blog Post! I've published a new blog post today on the Sew Over It Lois dress 👗 www.dressbyamy.co.uk This dress tested me in terms of the fit, so I thought I would share the fitting issues that I had and how I solved them over on my blog. Lois is a great pattern with several lovely features. It has a cute little collar high up on the neckline, cuffs on the sleeve with a stylish split, pleats and darts on the bodice and a side slit in the skirt. The fabric I used was a soft and drapey viscose, also from @sewoveritlondon #soiloisdress #sewoveritlondon #dressmaking #sewcialistsofinstagram #sewingmyownclothes #sewingmywardrobe

Day 5 of #memademay2021 It's pouring outside. Back to wool tights and cardigan. My #soiloisdress is roomy and nice to wear, elastic in the back. I made it last year when I thought I was planning for a business trip. Well. The dress stayed in the closet. Until today, actually. If it gets cold I'll put on my #nofrillscardigan . #swedensews #sewover50 #mmm2021

There seemed so many possibilities it was hard to resolve on one pattern for 1.5m of delicious raspberry #crepefabric. I settled on #newlook6351 trousers. Here they are with a #burdastylemagazine tie collar blouse that I made last year. I also made the #soiloisdress in plum marl rib but shortened the sleeves and cuffs. I finished the front edges with bias tape instead of the facings. It's the second time I have made this pattern and I'm now sure I don't like the collar, so won't include that if I make it again. My last make of the weekend was a simple purse/evening bag to match a dress I made last week. One of the many things we’re grateful for right now is having an indoor hobby to retreat to, and a wonderfully active online community to share it with. Sewing has brought us together, and it really does feel like we’re all helping each other through this anxious time 💕 For just a minute we’re pressing pause on our worries to highlight some of your fantastic makes 💗 1. @laurapop90 looks the absolute bomb in her leopard print Lois Dress (#soiloisdress)🔥 Totally gorgeous! 2. @lamuseauplacard has made this beautiful Sylvia Robe (#soisylviarobe) from a old sheet which she dyed. So pretty! 💖 3. Please can we have @katie_berberich’s Erin Skirt (#soierinskirt) all for ourselves? So chic and a lil bit sexy, we love it! 😍 Keep sharing your makes with the #sewoverit hashtag so we can see! Our Pattern Production Manager @nrwx will be on Stories shortly, sharing what she’s been making, so tune in!

The dance you do when you don’t have to put a zip in the dress you’re making 👯♀️ Lois has an elasticated back waist (only at the back so the front is flat and ungathered) so you can pop it on over your head 👌 Is anyone making Lois this weekend? #soiloisdress #sewoverit
