I fell in love with this Women's Institute Daisy Leaf cotton fabric on a recent visit to my local Hobbycraft store. For me, whatever pattern I made, it had to be all about this fabric. I decided to go with the Sew Over It Whiteley Top. This is a very versatile pattern. You can choose between a round neck or a V-neck, then decide if you want long, short or 3/4 length sleeves. The only modification I made to my version was to add a small cuff to the sleeves, as I felt I needed a little extra length. I used the cuff pattern piece from my Sew Over It Susie Blouse. Rather than gather the sleeve to fit the cuff, I just added a little pleat. This is my second @sewoveritlondon Whitley Top - this time with short sleeves. This is made in a lovely lightweight cotton from John Lewis. I French seamed this one throughout which gives a lovely finish and added a @kylieandthemachine label. This one has come up slightly closer fitting than my first version. Although I made this a while ago I haven’t worn it lots - partly due to the cold weather and partly because unless tucked in the v neck and short sleeves give a scrub top look which I’m not keen on. This is ‘Kizzy’ and she’s a deadstock viscose with a fun chain motif which runs from selvedge to selvedge. Those raspberry colours really float my boat. She does have a print defect which is shown on the website and is reflected in the price. I can see this making a really classic top. My precious/special fabrics tend to be 'designer' and I have quite few in a cupboard! I bought this Nerida Hansen from @beyond.thepinkdoor 😍 and wasn't sure what to make but spurred on by a challenge I decided to try @sewoveritlondon #soiwhitleytop This comes in bust sizes 👍 I graded from 14 waist to 16 hip, using C cup. Finished with a 'Gorgeous' label also from @beyond.thepinkdoor advent box a few years ago. Pattern was straightforward to sew and happy with the v-neck! I've had my eye on this Rose and Hubble fabric online for quite a while, but just hadn't got round to ordering it. Whilst away in Cornwall earlier this year, we called in to Trago Mills in Liskeard, as I knew they had quite a big fabric department😉 I couldn't believe my luck when I saw they had the same fabric, and even better it was in a sale, costing only £6 to make this top, result!!😃 This is the Sew Over It Whiteley top. Pattern tetris! Mum gave me under 1m fabric from her stash and asked me to make a v neck top with 3/4 length sleeves from it. I have no idea how old the fabric is or even what it is. It has a twill grain and is soft with reasonable body and drape. I had the Whitley Top from @sewoveritlondon in my collection, so I am still in the heavyweight of #thelastsewiststanding. After an interesting phone conversation trying to get measurements from my mum (try getting an 80 year old to see if her head fits through a certain size hole without being able to show her), I am cutting out a size 14, shortening the sleeves and missing out the back opening. #thelastsewiststanding #soiwhitleytop #halftermjobs #patterntetris

I intended to post more for #memademay2022 last month, but I lost my favorite pattern weight (my cat, Fiona), which really diminished my sewjo. Luckily, I still have a lot of closet staples to rotate through until I get back into some projects. Wore this A-line Burda Style (?) skirt and the @sewoveritlondon Whitley top with a colorful scarf to the office today. I kind of abandoned scarves during the height of work from home, so it felt new to me again. I’m a sucker for gold buttons on navy. I added the front placket to the skirt pattern and antiqued the buttons, which used to be a very bright yellow brass, a la the 1980s. Ugly notions can be rectified. Just ordered myself this @artgalleryfabrics stargazer 'connect the stars' cotton, to try my first ever me-made garment - the #soiwhitleytop (swipe to see). I think I'll opt for the 3/4 sleeve and the round neck. I bought the fabric from @minervadotcom. It's earth-friendly credentials are that it's OEKO-TEX. If I'm honest, I'm not totally clear how stringent that standard is. Any ideas? The fact that @good_fabric_store stock @artgalleryfabrics with the same credential gave me some reassurance. But more research needed I think... To date, I've made a couple of face masks (the #soifacecovering), and although I know it's probably more sensible to sew some more absolute beginner projects, I don't fancy making things I won't use. (I have enough tote bags, cushion covers and toiletry bags thank you!). Hoping this top could be a compromise... Today I received my sew over it pdfs, which I had printed by them during the sale. I’m so pleased as there was an option to have the instructions printed which is fabulous as it just means they are all set to go. I bought the summer dreaming ‘e ‘book mainly for the Ravello dress which I plan to make for next summer. I also love having the coloured front cover on top of each pattern to remind me what is in there. All in all a great experience. 🧵 Finished my @sewoveritlondon Whitley top! My first time sewing a neck facing (must admit I’m more of a bias binding person 🙈) and it does give a neat finish. 🪡 Modifications: - Moved the bust dart down - Added ruffles to the sleeves because I accidentally nicked a hole in the sleeve when trimming the thread 😰, so cut off a few centimetres of the sleeve and added a double sided ruffle (1.5 inches tall) - Found the top a bit tight once I added the sleeves (should I try a biceps adjustment next time?) so I made the seam allowance 3/8 inch instead of 5/8 for the sleeve/armhole seam, which made it fit a lot better - Made a rouleau and button closure for the back, and love the flower button 🌸 🌷 Pretty happy with my first attempt at pattern matching at the centre back seam! #soiwhitleytop #libertyfabric #libertylondon #libertylockwood #rufflesleeves #sewistsofinstagram #slowfashion #patternmatching

My favourite pattern company are celebrating their 10th birthday this month and have asked people to share their favourite makes. I came across @sewoveritlondon when I was trying to work out how to sew together the pattern pieces for an unfinished garment that I'd inherited from my Mum. I ended up watching lots of their tutorials and sewalongs on You Tube while working out how to attach facings, sleeves and pockets. I successfully finished that garment and was inspired to buy a pattern. The first thing I made was an Eva skirt from an old curtain. I later joined their stitch school and haven't looked back since. I think it's really helped me get through the last year. Finding a new hobby and creative outlet has been so important to my mental health as I've been living alone and shielding, trying to work online full time while dealing with a chronic illness. Sewing and connecting with the sewing community online has felt like a lifeline. I've found their patterns fit me really well, the style fits with things I like to wear and the instructions are easy to follow (plus there are lots of sewalongs available to help with tricky bits). I found it really hard to pick a favourite make but this my Emma dress, which I made through stitch school last year. I made two of these and have worn them a lot over the winter, great for work and really comfortable. I've also put together a collage of six other makes that I've worn/ love the most. So Happy birthday to Sew Over It, thanks for helping me get through this last year. I made this top yesterday and wore it to work today. I’m trying to add a bit more colour to my wardrobe and I think this fulfils that. It is the Whitley Top from Sew Over It and the fabric is a viscose jersey from Poundfabrics- this colour way is currently still in stock. This pattern seems to sew up a little large so I sized down on this one and also added elastic to the wrists. Ok, I haven’t tried this before but thought I’d see how I like it… this is my #MakeNine2022 In no particular order, we have: 1) @sewsweetness #PersimmonPouch in yellow and navy cotton; 2) #NeotsuSweater by Shellie Anderson in these three lovely yarns from @mrspeacockyarns ; 3) A couple of #OgdenCami (s) in small pieces of thrifted fabric; 4) my own design shawl in @littleacornyarn that has been languishing and needs me to work out the other half of it; 5) another @sewsweetness pattern, I’m planning to use the #UltimateArtOrganizer to make a custom small-circumference needle case; 6) this crochet blanket that’s been in progress forever - I realistically am unlikely to finish but would really like to make some decent progress; 7) a #SOIWhitleyTop in a yellow linen remnant from my stash (I will need to make a toile for this one, eek); 8) an as-yet-undecided sweater from this purple vintage yarn; and 9) another Mahogany Turban for sleep from this peacock print cotton and geometric print silk lining. Toiles (3) complete. In the end, I needed a square shoulder adjustment, a forward shoulder adjustment and a sway back adjustment as well as sleeve lengthening. Not perfect but definitely an improvement on the pattern as was. The pattern is #soiwhitleytop from @sewoverit and both versions were made from duvet covers. Now, to make two versions for work.

The deal was, I clear some of Mum's fabric stash and make her things from the pieces she really liked. She picked two out of the last car boot full. This is a top I've made her before (The Whitley from @sewoveritlondon) in size 14 with slightly shortened sleeves. The fabric has printed flowers on and also some embroidered flowers with cut outs. Another make that never made it to the grid for #MeMadeMay23 This is one of the first things I made when I started dressmaking. It’s the @sewoveritlondon #SOIWhitleyTop in the C/D cup option in some cotton I bought at the festival of quilts, finished with a @kylieandthemachine label. I really like the fit of this and the 3/4 length sleeve is great for work #barebelowtheelbows I would love to try this again in a drapier fabric like a viscose as I think that would work better. . #sewoverit #whitleytop #kylieandthemachine

I made quite a few adjustments on this #soiwhitleytop wearable toile. The fabric is cotton silk and feels lovely but is very sheer - I originally bought it as a lining fabric. In my many adjustments I forgot to lower the bust dart, pic 2 shows how high it is. I made the A/B cup version and I moved the shoulder forward 2.5cm, lowered th shoulder slope 1cm, lowered the armscye 1cm and widened the shoulder 1cmneither side. I think I'll bring the shoulder back slightly on the next version and as fitting on myself is tricky and I think I went a bit overboard there. Hopefully when I lower the dart the front won't ride up when I put a jumper on. I'm not overly worried about the look of the bust dart as I intend to wear it as a base layer with my #roiboosdress (pic 3) and this shift dress that I think was a vogue pattern (pic 4). Pic 5 is the original version with no adjustments. You can see how far back that shoulder seam is! Perfected my adjustments using @ginareneedesigns #thefittingbook

First new @sewoveritlondon pattern of the year - #soiaidadress - and it's great. As a #patterninsider I got to make the Aida dress before the launch, however I definitely plan to make another in a plain fabric to show the lines better. . . Aida is tea dress style with small gathers under the bust, beautiful full sleeves and optional shirred cuffs. The pattern has the on trend high round neck, check out the other lovely makes today. I've made a straight size 10 in viscose with the shirred cuffs, my shirring should have been a bit tighter... next time. I have changed the neckline, purely due to personal taste. I finally got to take a photo of this #soiwhitleytop I made at the end of April. Really happy with it. I used French and Hong Kong seams (except for the arm holes). It's size 8, A-B cup and the dart placement is pretty good, but next time I need to do a forward shoulder adjustment and widen the shoulders about 1 - 2vm.
