Giselle Dress
Sew Over It

Giselle Dress
The Giselle Dress is a semi-fitted midi sheath dress featuring a double darted bodice, T-shirt length sleeves, and a round neckline. It's shaped through the waist and hip with panels in the skirt with an optional split, and closes at the centre back with an invisible zip and keyhole opening. Recommended fabrics include lightweight woven fabrics with drape such as viscose or tencel twill, viscose challis, lightweight crepes, and linen viscose blends.

Sew Over It Giselle Dress My fifth Giselle dress ... or maybe sixth ... but everyone feels so fresh as different fabric with different properties, all from Minerva. This is the perfect everyday dress and great in all types of summer weather. Love the split and the ‘v’ neck I hacked into the black one. I also reduce width on skirt panels to have a more slimline silhouette. The panel skirt has a great fit and shape ... really flattering. Used size 12 on bodice and waist taper to size 14 on hips and back to 12 to hem. Can’t beat a bit of scuba stretch … so easy to sew and no need for overlock seams is added bonus. The flock in this print makes it feel quite special, which given it was just £7 a metre and then in sale is awesome. Think this cost me £10 in total to make. 👗🥰 #soigiselledress #minervadotcom

I’ve made my @sewoveritlondon Giselle dress with the plan to wear it for my daughter’s upcoming music concert. Unfortunately the farmers near me are currently muck spreading and wow if you could smell what I could while posing in my garden it would take any tiny amount of glam away from it! I’ve owned this pattern for a while now but I’ve only just got around to making it up as I knew I’d probably need to make a few adjustments. The pattern is usually mid length and I have simply shortened it to make it a bit more wearable day to day for me in summer. I’ve made a small FBA and a narrow shoulder adjustment and also taken a little off the upper back. I just need to transfer all these alterations to the pattern as the sheath type style will be perfect for hacking and LOTS of future dresses. I have realised that hooks and eyes are a bigger enemy than buttons! With a firm dislike of hand sewing these things are not my friend! I don’t often use them, but the pattern has a pretty little gap above the invisible zip and is held together by a hook and eye. It took me WAY too long to do that tiny finishing touch!!! The fabric is a heavier stretch cotton sateen I’ve had for a while in my stash from @rainbowfabrickilburn .I wasn’t sure about the background colour until I put it on but now I love it! On a quick Instagram stalk of the pattern it looks to be made more often than not in viscose and my fabric is definitely more structured but the stretch makes it really comfortable and shortening it worked really well. #rainbowfabrics #rainbowfabricskilburn #sewoverit #soigiselle #soigiselledress #cotton #sewers #sewists #sewistsofinstagram #imakemyclothes #imadethis #sewersgonnasew #sew #sewoveritlondon

Late Return from the opera in my latest make… I was quite happy that the end result was what I had envisioned! 🌻 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻 A hacked #soigiselledress I made for a party at the weekend but had so much fun I didn’t take a picture so I wore to work today so I could use the full length mirror 😌 👗 Giselle dress from @sewoveritlondon 🪡 I took the neckline down by about 1cm and made a V neck at the back to the Start of the zip. Full bust adjustment on the bodice and took out 1cm from the back seam. And added the sleeves from the #soipippadress because I thought the fabric deserved some 1970s bell sleeves 🕺 🧵 fabric is a really soft needle cord that I bought in the Christmas sale from sew over it.

I’m going to a staff awards dinner next week, but I had nothing suitable to wear, so of course I had to make a new dress. I went for the @sewoveritlondon Estelle dress and I think it will be just right. I bought a remnant of this @ladymcelroyfabrics velour last winter but chickened out of using it because I didn’t have much experience sewing with stretch. I’m glad I waited, because more confidence with stretch, and a walking foot, made a big difference. I’m looking forward to wearing this on Friday night, and I might style it with my recently finished @stylearc denim jacket. Don’t they look cute together? #soigiselledress #estelledress #sasteviejeanjacket #beautyandthebee #sewover50 #sewover50september #imakemyownclothes #memade #memadewardrobe ##dressmakingismysuperpower #dressmaker #sewistsofinstagram #sewist #sewing

Lovely day at @bathracecourse yesterday as we treated the parentals to a day spent on the Terrace for the best views of the race for their birthday gift this year; a belated birthday treat for Chris, Karen & Andy and a slightly early gift for Mum 🏇 Managed the whip up this @sewoveritlondon giselle dress (with modified flutter sleeves and some waist anchored pockets) from beautiful @dashwoodstudio fabric bought at @koalakreations #bathraces #bathracecourse #selfmadedress #soigiselledress

🧵🌼 Me Made May - Day 18 🌼🧵 Another busy day today. Lots of little jobs to get sorted but all done now and having a quiet evening of some crafty bits and pieces. I wore one of my @SewOverItLondon Giselle dresses made in a gorgeous ditsy floral viscose linen. I made this dress a few years ago but it is still growing strong and a favourite in my spring/summer wardrobe. I paired my Giselle with a cream pearl detailed jumper that I bought from Vinted and my Sorentto Jacket. One of four Giselle dresses I’ve made from Sew Over It pattern. I’ve previously used a scuba and viscose but this is by far my favourite fabric to date. It’s a Lady McEllroy stretch woven suiting with 10% stretch across the width from Minerva. It has a lovely bit of structure so holds its shape rather than stretching to mine. A nice medium hold. This is excellent as I wanted a pencil skirt shape and the split up front seam makes it feel dressier than the viscose equivalents … they are more relaxed and summery types. I felt really smart and ready for our well overdue date night! It looked lovely with my me made coat too! @minervadotcom @sewoveritlondon #soigiselledress 👗👠❤️

A few years back I bought a leopard print midi skirt on @vinted and promptly told one of my best friends that I didn't know who I thought it was and I clearly wasn't cool enough to wear such things. She told me to stop being daft and it turns out, I have never put that skirt on and not feel great in it. So fast forward to spotting this animal print viscose for a bargain £3.99 a metre, I simply couldn't resist making another. The skirt is a hacked #soigiselledress with a few added darts around the waist as I seem to be ✨excellent✨ at making things and discovering that they are simply too big. Sidenote: I've never felt more like Angelina Jolie than trying to get a photo of the leg slit in the skirt. IYKYK. ..... Pattern: The Giselle dress by @sewoveritlondon. I made the skirt in a size 12, shortened the overall length and increased the length of the split. Next time I would make a 10 and hopefully needed fewer darts 🤞 Fabric: Animal (🐆?) print viscose from the treasure trove that is @bombaystores_fabrics ..... #handmadeclothes #handmadewardrobe #myhandmadewardrobe #imakemyownclothes #sewing #beginnersewing #sewistsofyorkshire #soigiselle #soigisellehack #soigiselleskirt #midiskirt

Had great plans for making a Pleides dress for this afternoon's SewFizzTeaCated hosted by @surreysews ... But here was last night's progress so I resorted to one of my favourite MeMades and wore my Giselle dress. Had a great time meeting new sewing friends and definitely have added some new patterns to my wishlist. When I got home I could have cracked on with the Pleides.... but instead I found a tutorial for a Bow Bag - saw a couple of gorgeous ones today so made up one in some linen scraps #sewfizzteacated24 #soigiselledress #bowbag

I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with what to sew next. I go back to work in a week or so and I need some tops more than anything but I was getting distracted by all the things. In my wardrobe overhaul adventure, I've been learning that stopping to take time to think and visualize has meant I am already starting to build a more wearable wardrobe. Tonight, I cleaned up my sewing room and then drew all the ideas whirling around in my head. As I went, my ideas became more and more nebulous. I know that I should start with the things I drew first after the #closetcoreonyx and #amesjeans that I already made. Planning like this has meant less pattern and fabric shopping, as well. I know I have what I need and I have a direction. Even when I really love something , it is easier to say "not right now". I even already have all the patterns except the #iman Skirt by @just_patterns, and I will get it when I am ready to make it. ❤ I think tomorrow I will start working on some t-shirts and maybe the #metrablazer. Here's a list of the garments I drew: Closet Core: @closetcorepatterns - Onyx Pants @closetcorepatterns #closetcoreonyx - Mitchell Trousers #closetcoremitchell - Marigold Sweater #closetcoremarigold - Marine Breton -Top #closetcoremarine Cashmerette: @cashmerette - Ames Jeans #amesjeans - Carlyle T-Shirt #carlyletshirt - Concord Tee Shirt #concordtshirt - Rivermont Dress #rivermontdress Just Patterns: @just_patterns - Iman Skirt #imanskirt Swim Style: @swimstylepatterns - Ritual Dress and Shirt #ritualpattern Sew Over It: @sewoveritlondon - Ruby Skirt #soirubyskirt - Giselle Dress #soigiselledress - Nicole Dress #soinicoledress Love Notions: @lovenotions - Metra Blazer #metrablazer - Classic Tee #lnclassictee @mybodymodel #wardrobeplanning #isewmyownclothes #jecoudsmagarderobe

• GISELLE • This dress is a bit of a departure from my usual silhouettes, but I just fell in love with the elegant style lines ♥️ The Giselle dress has a panelled skirt, round neckline and swipe to see the sweet keyhole opening at the back! 🥰 This gorgeous Atelier Brunette modal is totally divine; I love the all-over abstract print of shards of light toffee brown and deep mocha brown on the black background — it really does feel very autumnal, like a kaleidoscope of falling leaves 🍂 Pattern: @sewoveritlondon Giselle dress Fabric: @atelierbrunette Viscose Modal from @minervadotcom [gifted]

When your husband voluntarily wants a matching bowtie 🎀 This is my @sewoveritlondon #giselledress Modifications made : grade 2 sizes between waist and hips and made the leg split a bit higher. I spy some bagginess in the bodice so I could do with making some adjustments to that. All in all I really like this pattern, it's a dress for many occasions, once the darts are out the way, it sews up pretty quickly too. I have the Betty dress pattern aswell, so that's on my ever long list of planned makes😅 Fabric @libertylondon a quilting cotton hedgerow bloom From @abakhanfabrics @abakhan_chester For the bow ties (I made one for my son too) I used the @gatheredmakers tutorial, which was super easy and...... free... thank you very much. It used a small amount of fabric too. I omitted the hardwear and used sew on velcro on both. Great scrap busting or gifting idea 💡I did try to make my son's a bit smaller but need to revisit that to make it smaller again Spot the photo bomber 👀 #sewoverit #sewoveritlondon #sewistsofinstagram #sewityourself #imadethis #imakemyownclothes #makersgonnamake #libertylondon #abakhanmakes #abakhan #sewing #dress #dresspattern #soigiselledress

I love a @sewoverit #soigiselledress Comfortable, can be dressed up or down & a reasonably straightforward sew. I was able to cut and sew this in about 5 hours I have 4 giselle dresses now; have added long sleeves from the #soifridadress to a winter version, and for this summer version, I modified the sleeves to be slightly long and looser to be a flutter sleeve. I am also able to omit the zip on this pattern, which (for me) is a huge time saver! I wore this for a day at the races with an off the rack @joules blazer, which I worked out I've had for about 8-9years now Pattern: Giselle Dress by @sewoverit Fabric: Dashwood Rayon bought from @koalakreations in the summer sale maybe last year? What do you do when your son proposes on 2nd March 2025, then tells you that the wedding is going to be on the 28th April 2025? Absolutely delighted, but then the panic set in as I really wanted to make my outfit for the occasion!! I quickly decided on my pattern choices, both were by Sew Over It, the Coco jacket and Giselle dress. Fortunately I already had these patterns in my stash as I wanted to try them, just not quite so quickly 😳 I did my usual toile of both patterns, just to be sure of sizing. My jacket was a straight size 12, but I did add 2" to the length as it wanted it a little longer. My dress is a size 12 bodice, blended to a 14 over the waist and hips. Having only 57 days from the proposal to the wedding didn't leave much time for fabric shopping, but this whole outfit was definitely meant to come together. I had some Hugo Boss coating fabric left over from a recent coat project, together with some jaquard lining from Higgs and Higgs, also left from that coat. Since the wedding was April I thought I may benefit from a slightly thicker, warmer fabric. As it turns out that wasn't a problem as the wedding day weather was fabulous 🌞😎 My dress fabric was a Domotex Viscose Naima in purple mauve again from Higgs and Higgs bought to make a Giselle dress but I hadn't got round to it. I just happened to drape the fabric on my tailors dummy underneath my finished jacket and realised that they matched perfectly 👌 I'm very happy with how my outfit came together and loved wearing it on the day. I had to include a photo of my gorgeous son and beautiful new daughter in law😍 The new Mr and Mrs! #handmade #sewing #sewoveritlondon #soigiselledress #soicocojacket #higgsandhiggsfabric #homesewing #memadewardrobe #imakemyownclothes #memade #sewingismypassion #jukiclub #franklinscolchester #jukisewing #sewing #create #sewistofinstagram #lovetosew #pattern #trend #sewingideas #britishsewingbee

Sew Over It Margot As a @sewoveritlondon #patterninsider I received the new #soimargotdress pattern early. The Margot dress is a simple shaped dress with raglan sleeves, lined bodice, multiple darts & side zip. The pattern included lots of interesting finishes including lined bodice, binding and invisible zipper. There are sleeve and skirt options to choose from. When I first saw the line drawings I knew I wanted to make one. I love the #soigiselledress which has clean lines and darts. The Margot is also a slightly fitted dress with clean lines but with raglan sleeves. Sometimes a dress with less bells and whistles allows for the details to shine. Once I read the pattern I wasn’t as excited, because I couldn’t wrap my head around all the steps. Then needed to take the project along with me for the weekend and serged the edges of the pattern pieces since I was only bringing a sewing machine & was even more confused about how it would come together. Once I actually started sewing everything came together nicely. I used a @minervadotcom exclusive viscose challis and sewed a straight size 10 long sleeves & longer skirt with no adjustments. Overall I am happy with this dress and am happy to have another simple darted dress in my library, to show off fabrics and can be hacked. I also think that this is a pattern you need to make to understand the instructions. #memadetoday #memadeeveryday #sewoverit #soipatterninsiders #sewingforme #minervamakers #byalissa2024 #handmadewordrobe #sewing #sewist #garmentsewing #handmadewordrobe

Florals for fall with @sewoveritlondon #soigiselledress 🍁 The Giselle dress is an instant classic to me! I love the simple and elegant style lines, keyhole back neckline, and how lovely this design feels to wear. This is definitely one of those patterns that can easily transition from everyday casual to fully glammed up depending on the fabric, sleeves, and length of the skirt (or that skirt slit!) Pattern notes: * Lengthened the sleeve by about 13” and slashed/spread the pattern for a 70s inspired bell sleeve * Finished the neckline with a button and rouleau loop (vs hook and eye in the pattern). * Next time I’d add a bit of interfacing to the back keyhole seams for some extra stability if using a drapey fabric Fabric is a deadstock viscose crepe from @stonemountainfabric , the print reminds me of some of the beautiful florals from the most recent @rodarte collection. I’m feeling really drawn to reds for autumn this year, and I love the little pops of cobalt blue amidst the poppies! . . . . #soigiselledress #soigiselle #sewoverit #soishowoff #stonemountainfabric #sewyourselfsustainable #sewistsofinstagram #memade #imakemyclothes #isewmyownclothes #memadewardrobe #sewcialists #millenialsewing #ilovetosew #sewinginspiration #stitchwitch #loveindiesewing

Sew Over It Giselle Dress The @sewoveritlondon Giselle dress has become one of my favorite patterns. The simple shape fits well, a fairly straight forward sew and doesn’t require too much fabric. I bought this @riflepaperco rayon fabric from Rifle Paper Co and wanted to sew it up right away. I thought the Giselle would be a perfect pattern to let the fabric shine. I had 3 yards of the navy Estee rayon. The #riflepapercofabric rayon is narrow but I still had about 3/4 of a yard left over. I made a size 10 with no major adjustments. I tried my best to cut the print straight but wasn’t too successful, can you tell? I can’t, sometimes stepping away from a project makes you appreciate it a lot more. I loved this fabric so much I ended up buying the cream color too! #handmadewardrobe #handmadeforme #sewingforme #byalissa2023 #soigiselle #soigiselledress #sewoverit #sewoveritlondon #sewoveritinsider #yesimadeit #sewconnected #sewingcommunity #sewingdresses

I decided several months ago to abandon my #makenine2020 as over half the items on there were meant for our 10 year wedding anniversary trip to Mauritius in June which obvs never happened because...rona 😢 So instead I present my alternative makenine, made up by me 😂, which is a celebration of my continued fan-girl obsession with @sewoveritlondon and another year as one of their Pattern Insiders. Sew Over It release a new pdf pattern every month and as Pattern Insiders we get early access (and free printing) so we can make up the garment ready for launch day. There is no obligation to make the pattern every month but as SOI patterns usually suit and fit me so well I do end up making most of them! This year I made 9 out of the 12 that were released. The ones I didn’t make were the Farrah boiler suit (not my style, I hate jumpsuits), the Suraya jacket (lovely pattern but just not my style at all) and the Luna PJs (I was planning to make these for my sister for Christmas but the fabric I ordered on 31st October never arrived in time! 😱) So these are the 9 that I did make (L-R, top to bottom rows): 1️⃣ Lois Dress in crepe from @sewoveritlondon 2️⃣ Audrey Top in cotton jersey from @guthrieghani 3️⃣ Freia Blouse in satin from @sewisfaction 4️⃣ Giselle Dress in viscose twill from @sewoveritlondon 5️⃣ Lucy Dress in bamboo jersey from @raystitch 6️⃣ Maisie Dress in cotton sateen from India 7️⃣ Peggy Trousers in twill garbardine from @minervadotcom 8️⃣ Esther Blouse in viscose from @sewmesunshine.uk 9️⃣ Roxy Jumper in ponte knit from @sewoveritlondon On top of this I also made all 5 of the garments in their Summer Dreaming eBook, their paper pattern release the 1960s Coat and 2 of their Stitch School releases!!! A big thank you to the amazing team at SOI for releasing such a lovely collection of patterns this year and a special shout-out to the fabulous Nicole @nrwx who works like a trojan every month to get the patterns and instructions ready! #sewoverit #sewoveritlondon #soipatterninsiders #soiloisdress #soiaudreytop #soifreiablouse #soigiselledress #soilucydress #soimaisiedress #soipeggytrousers #soiestherblouse #soiroxyjumper
