With the start of the Dubai Fitness Challenge, here is my take on it and let me show you that you can create more than just dresses with your sewing skills and trusty sewing machine.⁠ ⁠ Since I started exercising a few years ago (boxing 🥊 ), I felt the need to expand my handmade wardrobe further and make clothes for exercising.⁠ ⁠ We all have different likes when it comes to activewear and for leggings I never liked the waistbands that come with it. I bought one recently, and it doesn’t give enough support. found it harder to find a nice top, I felt comfortable wearing. Most of the time, I just wore t-shirts.⁠ I also don’t like all the polyester that is being used for all most all activewear. ⁠ ⁠ 🔬 Research has shown that we absorb micro plastics through our skin when sweating. So all the more reasons to make my own exercise clothes.⁠ ⁠ I tried the Kingsly Top by @sewoveritlondon a few years ago, and liked it especially the gathered racer back but was never super happy with the fit. ⁠ ⁠ I made a few length adjustments, graded between sizes and changed the hemline. I’m back with another #BRAugust2020 as it’s Day 10 and all about Active Sportswear. Sewing activewear is something I’ve enjoyed for a couple of years now. Its not hard to do once you’ve practiced a bit and they are usually quick and satisfying projects. Tailoring them to your size/fitting needs makes a huge difference compared to what you can buy RTW. I recently made this @sewoveritlondon #soikingslytop to help me get the running bug again once my kids went back to school last term. Nothing like a new bit of handmade kit to get you motivated! I wanted a running top with a high neckline so that it covers my cleavage when I run, as it sits quite high when I wear my compression bra. RTW tops always dipped too low on me. I love the loose fit around the waist and hip and racer back and have wanted a top like this for a long time. I even tried to draft one myself last year (using that repurposed purple Lycra I recently made into a sports bra!) and failed miserably. This pattern is exactly what I wanted and the bonus is that it was drafted by someone who knew how to draft patterns (not me!). I used a viscose jersey from my stash and it’s probably a bit too slinky and stretchy, but I think it works just fine and is so comfortable to run in. I love the long armhole, the curved hem and the gathers at the back. I managed to stretch out the neckband at the back and one of the armhole bands when I was attaching them, so it looks a bit shoddy close up. I’m going to take better care when finishing my activewear projects because they will definitely last longer, and look better, if I do. I made these @helens_closet #averyleggings a couple of years ago. I shortened them to wear in the warmer months and they have held up so well, even after all that marathon training. I'm very excitedly cutting out my bonkers leggings right now! I really need some new exercise wear so I decided to have a go at making it myself. I've got the Huby leggings and Kingsly top patterns from @sewoveritlondon, and some really cool fabrics (I think!!! My husband disagrees! His face when he saw the jellybeans was priceless!) to sew them up in. For the leggings I bought some recycled stretch fabric from @funkifabrics, who I've bought from before to make swimsuits. I chose strawberries and jellybeans! I absolutely love them, they are so fun. I love the idea of my jellybean butt doing squats! And for the top I bought a gorgeous soft bamboo rib from @sistermintaka, who has a super range of lovely bamboo knits. I'm not making the top yet just the leggings for now.
