Week three of Me Made May! Started off week 3 with the same illness that took Liam out last week so it was a PJ day but fortunately I have lovely new memade pjs (note this photo was not taken on my sick day!) I absolutely love the @matchymatchysewingclub brunch club set - this was my first pair made out of @minervadotcom cotton sateen. I made a straight size m with no adjustments and the fit is perfect. I used 3 mtrs of fabric. I loved this so much I went on to make a short pair which I got out of 2 meters AND then I made a pair of my friend out of viscose. I have to say - the viscose pair was a bit tricky and it’s not as neat as my cotton pairs. Fortunately my friend is a sewist herself so she knows the craic! A last taste of summer I got this fabric 3 weeks or so ago and I did wonder if I could get it made up and worn once or maybe twice before the summer ended…. And I did! (Admittedly with a cardigan over it for most of yesterday) This is my first time making the @sewoveritlondon kitty dress (I’m a pattern insider for them but I bought this pattern myself many moons ago). It won’t be the last! I made the straight size 12 in this and the fit is spot on. I didn’t even need to do my usual narrow shoulder adjustment so one to bear in mind if you have actual shoulders. I had 2.3mtrs of this and it was a squeeze but doable. This fabric is fabulous (gifted) @minervadotcom cotton linen. This is a relatively new base for them. It’s a lot heavier than their viscose linen - would make great trousers. May 21: Believe it or not, the background on this fabric is a dark green. We woke up to intense thunderstorms this morning and are supposed to have "heavy" rain for the next few hours so, this is about as much lighting as I can get this morning. Classic and so wearable, whether you’re popping to the shops or headed for a party, the Kitty Dress is a button-down shirt dress with a huge variety of options - last time we counted there were ten! With a vintage nod, all versions are feminine, fitted through the waist AND with pockets 🙌

I’m nearing the end of my fall sewing bender (I regret nothing), and I’m delighted to have finally brought this particular scheme to life! I’m so pumped I’m waving a cider donut in the yard! I’ve had this gorgeous (sadly not available anymore) plaid cotton in stash and it demanded to be a #soikittydress. It’s 3 yards of a 44” wide fabric and with very careful cutting, contrasting skirt facings, pockets, and inside waistband, along with giving up on pattern matching on the skirt (I did get close on the front bodice, though!) I was JUST able to make it happen. I really love it- it’s a great layering piece and the cotton is a little on the hefty end so it’ll carry me into cooler temperatures. I did ALL the fancy finishes on this one: French seams, bias bound armholes (my new go-to), hand hemming. I’ve got the time and capacity to slow my roll a bit and really dig into the process (and I get an even nicer garment in the end!) At this point, sewing is a hobby and not a necessity, so I might as well enjoy it. I also made the buttons- the mold is from a vintage button and they are super cute AND thermal color change. Making things is one of the best ways I know to stay present, grounded, joyful, hopeful, and connected to other good humans. I hope you are able to lean into your own creativity right now (and always!)

The #SOIKitty has been on my to-sew list for YEARS with its cute collar options, shirt dress style and vintage vibe. I’d never properly settled on a fabric but took the plunge and so very glad I did! The pattern is actually a mash up of the Kitty bodice which I lengthened and paired with the #SOILeaDress before realising the seams don’t align - but shhh, it’s a busy print and no one will know 👀 for the next one I will use the Kitty skirt but flare the pieces for the swish effect. Would you believe this fabric arrived on Saturday and by today (Thursday) it’s been washed, dried, cut out and actually made into a garment!! I know right I can hardly believe it either 🤣🙈. My mum fell in love with the @simplicitymccallsuk @simplicity_creative_group K8384 when my sewing bestie @thimbers made it back on the Sewing Bee. However she didn’t like handkerchief hem for herself so we made a straight hem. I’ve made a few of these for her in the past but she asked me if I could merge two of her favourite patterns together. May 9: I finished this #soikittydress last night and had to immediately wear it today. This is at least my sixth time making some version of this dress (I counted the ones in my closet really quickly this morning) and I still love it. I made this one with Brussels Washer Linen from @fatquartershop . I had actually planned to make some June pants (Helen's closet pattern) but I thought the fabric was going to be more of a rust orange. I decided I didn't need another pair of red pants right now but solid linen shirt dresses show up in my feed and in ads all of the time. So, I made this instead. Finished this months ago and decided I need some proper photos, and here we are! My love for button up dresses continues. The Kitty dress by Sew Over It. It could use a good steam press, which I didn't bother with before this impromptu shoot. Felt a bit challenged sewing her up. I wasn't used to this particular inner lining WITH a collar and the fabric is of a slippery kind. Definitely had some frustration but I'm thrilled with the end result. I edited the skirt to make it a bit shorter at the front and longer at the back, however it's barely noticeable. The armscye ended up a bit too large, but again, not really noticeable unless in certain positions. 💙 K I T T Y 💙 Yes I have finished my summer dress in the fall…but at least it’s done! 🙃 I love the silhouette of the SOI Kitty Dress…even if it does have those June Cleaver vibes 💗 The fabric is a lovely cotton lawn or cotton voile…it was a treat to work with and lovely and light to wear 💙 I had to remove the waistband a few times to shorten the bodice but I am happy where it sits now. I do plan to add shoulder pads but ran out of time…the weather to wear something this light is quickly fading! #MeMadeMay2024 day 21 It’s been hard to keep up with photos, but I made it another day with this #SOIKittyDress. One of my top 10 dress patterns, I made this version in June 2019. It has the shawl collar instead of the notched collar. I just love the paneled skirt on this.

At work, the teachers decided to wear "vacation" shirts today. I don't collect tees from places we've been but I did buy the fabric for this blouse in Albania when we visited back in 2018. YAY IT’S A FINISHED OBJECT! I’ve been wanting a 1940s-style apron for a while and finding the right pattern has proven a bit more of a challenge than I preferred. I wanted something practical, sturdy, and not frilly, and I needed it to have bias binding. After a disastrous experience with a true vintage pattern and LOTS of searching, I found this pattern on Etsy. It’s the Betty Apron by Little Bird Lane and it was perfectly pleasant to make. I lengthened the pattern by 2”, widened and lengthened the straps, and cut fabric on the straight of grain rather than the bias. My one word of advice is to USE PURCHASED BIAS TAPE. I made my own and it was a nightmare- with seams this narrow you want the sturdiness of commercial bias tape. There are some hot mess bits on this but IT’S AN APRON. Fabric is a Liberty quilting cotton (left over from backing a quilt) and I think Liberty prints are one of the best ways to get an authentic vintage look with modern fabrics. A lot of the prints they currently stock are period and I love a 30s/40s small scale floral! The goal (as always) was to channel Ruth Goodman on Wartime Farm, and I’m delighted with this project! #memademay2024 days 18 and 19. When I repeat a pattern straight away it means it's a good one. So this is my second #soimaeve, @sewoveritlondon worn today, but in a plain and I think that highlights the rouleau loops and pretty faux cuff detail. . . I'm still with water in #memademademay. Photos 2 and 3 show a really sweet ceramic fountain inside a little hotel. This house belonged to the grandparents of a friend of mine and she loved the little frogs as a child. . Unfortunately it's not so pretty with the bars around, but a hotel needs to think of safety. Many old houses like this have fountains.. In days before aircon, running water and plants made the inhabitants feel cooler. . . Day 18 was a great day spent with my dancing class, we even took our dancing out to the park. Swing dancing is even better with a swishy skirt - another @sewoveritlondon make but from at least 5 years ago #soikittydress. None of these makes are new but I haven't shared two out of three and all three have been saved with some mending/modifications. First up: these #cnisle corduroy flares. I made them last spring and they needed some taking in through the hips and they may still need some mods through the rise but they fit better than store bought ever do on me so I am wearing them this fall! The #soikittydress blouse hack in #libertytanalawn was made about five years ago and was a little tight across my bust. So, I moved the buttons over (there is a facing, not a placket!) And now, it's much better. And third, the sweater is a #marlosweater by @truebias in a navy rib knit. I originally made it to be worn closed all of the time like my first Marlo. But, the fabric was different enough and I found it just never looked quite right. So, I took the buttons off, made the button holes and put the buttons back on. I thought for a while about getting a dress form or a mannequin. I decided in the end that a mannequin would do the job. Here is the #soijulietteblouse in 'between the lines' polyester from dashwood studio. I found the pattern instructions for the collar and frill a bit fiddly. I also made another #soikittydress dress in #rosefabric jersey and a #newlook6525 with split sleeves (view b) in #stretchvelvet at the weekend. Both were for my lovely daughter @amelia.hellyer and already delivered. Sew Over It is looking for new #soipatterninsiders and specifically BIPOC and disabled makers to create a better representation of our maker community (there’s a link in my bio and their bio to the sign up, deadline tomorrow). Pattern insiders make the newest @sewoveritlondon pattern so that when the pattern is released you can see it made up on a variety of people and get a better idea of how the pattern might fit you. I’ve been a pattern insider for over a year now and it has been a real pleasure to do. I signed up to get some more spontaneity and excitement in my sewing. You don’t need to make every pattern (though you can). When I’m busy or tired I opt out and when I do have the two weeks time and energy to make something I opt in. The team now offers to print your pattern for you or have a local to you printer print it for you if printing would be an issue for you. Sizing goes from UK 8 to UK30. There’s a facebook group in which we can discuss everything to do with the patterns which is a very nice and supportive group. The team itself is very approachable and filled with kind and attentive people. I so far have ended up with three patterns that are amongst my favourite patterns ever (the #soimeredithdress #soiloisdress and #soikittydress pictured here), but I also got to explore some patterns I might not have tried otherwise and got me out of my rut and comfort zone.
