There’s something very satisfying about trying a new pattern and having it work out on the first go - especially when you’ve made adjustments on the fly and don’t know if they’ll be enough. I think this @sewoveritlondon Esther blouse looks super-cute in strawberry-print cotton. Wish I’d had matching snaps, though. I was a little hesitant at first because I wasn’t sure the shape would suit me, but I’m glad to be wrong. I need to be less afraid of tops that are semi-fitted around the waist, as all that really needs to be done is proper size blending to make for a good fit. I sewed a size UK 16 blended to an 18 at the waist, and shortened the bodice by 3cm just above the bust. I cut the original 3/4 sleeves to elbow-length and modified them for an elasticised cuff, because for some reason I’ve been all about the puff lately. So this is the third pattern I’ve made by Sew Over It and I have to say… I’m loving them. This blouse is adorable, and now I have their Frankie chore jacket, Poppy playsuit, Bonnie blouse, and Viola dress in the queue as well. I also want to make Norah and Charlotte and Emily and and and… yes. Plans, plans, and more plans. Yesterday I did something I’ve never really done before and made a test garment. Does this mean I’m growing up as a sewist?! I’m making the #SewOverItLondon #SOIEstherBlouse and graded between 3 pattern sizes. I’ve done this before but only with very simple tops with 2 pieces. Finally getting back to normality and getting my sewing machine back out has been a big part of my recovery! This was my last make before my op - the #soiestherblouse by @sewoveritlondon in beautiful Liberty ‘White on White’ Ianthe Tana Lawn from @alicecarolinefabrics it’s a really quick make and it fits lovely. The only change I made was to do elasticated cuffs.

Finally braved the buttons! I have a stack of patterns I’ve been putting off making because I’ve never sewn a button or buttonhole. Last night I finally conquered my fear and it went ok 🎉 The one step button hole is pretty straightforward when you remember to pull the stopper down! The #SOIEstherBlouse has: * 5 button holes * 2 rouleau loops * 7 buttons * cuff binding * front and back neckline facing The pattern says it’s for confident beginners. It’s definitely the most challenging thing I’ve made so far but it’s a beautiful pattern. The cotton lawn is a lovely #LadyMcElroyFabric that I bought from @fabricgodmother a while back. Day 4 of #memademay2023 and wearing yet again @libertyfabrics, so it might be a theme for this month. This is actually the first Liberty cotton lawn that I ever bought, however it has taken me about 2 years to cut into it because I love it so much. The blouse pattern is the #soiestherblouse by @sewoveritlondon. I’m very happy with the construction as I finished it with French seams and the interior looks so clean. It fits me perfectly after some small adjustments to the bust. The buttons are made by the lovely Louise from @ethelandjoan. I decided several months ago to abandon my #makenine2020 as over half the items on there were meant for our 10 year wedding anniversary trip to Mauritius in June which obvs never happened because...rona 😢 So instead I present my alternative makenine, made up by me 😂, which is a celebration of my continued fan-girl obsession with @sewoveritlondon and another year as one of their Pattern Insiders. Sew Over It release a new pdf pattern every month and as Pattern Insiders we get early access (and free printing) so we can make up the garment ready for launch day. There is no obligation to make the pattern every month but as SOI patterns usually suit and fit me so well I do end up making most of them! This year I made 9 out of the 12 that were released. Very easy to make actually and because I used cotton it was even faster to sew.
