I have a second unexpected entry for #sewtogetherforwinter hosted by @sewing_in_spain @sewsarahsmith @crafting_slovak The #soi1960scoat was on my 2021 make nine list, and it was also on my 2022 make nine. I had started sewing it but had put it aside with no real plans to finish it. I decided to buckle down and complete the only sewing UFO that I have. I am so glad that I persevered because I’ve found that I really love this coat. Be warned, there’s a lot of hand stitching. But I just took my time and worked on it slowly. I made the size 8 in the shorter view but I did add the pockets because I can’t have a coat without pockets. I bought the fabric in 2013, so it was a big relief to finally use it. #sewoverit #coatsewing #imakemyownclothes #sewover40 #sewistsofinstagram #asiansewist #petitesewist

Autumn is my favorite season and a season I love to make clothes for 🪡🍂🧡 Last saturday we went for a autumn walk in the woods and I wore my #Soi1960scoat, that I made last fall. Underneath it I wore the #Freyatop that I made a few weeks ago ✂️ I haven’t been very productive the past week, at first I was very frustrated about it because I still have so much on my to sew-list and I want to make the most out of my favorite season. Because of my chronical health issues, I don’t always have a lot of energy and when I do have the energy I want to do everything with it. But sometimes I tend to forget that it’s not only my physical body that needs rest, sometimes my head needs some rest too. So today I decided it was okey, not to be productive all the time. It’s okey to not stick to the plan.

✨ 1 9 6 0 ‘ S C O A T ✨ I started this coat as a wearable toile in 2021 - and thought I’d better finish it this year! But you know when you’re pretty sure something isn’t going to fit, so it’s hard to be motivated to finish it?? Yeah? That. It’s definitely wearable, just not by me! The shoulders are far too narrow and it’s about 4” shorter than I’d comfortably wear (I can hear my mum’s voice saying - “your kidneys will get cold in that!!”) 😂 Anyway, lucky for me (and her) my sewing BFF meets the specs for this otherwise lovely coat. I’ll have to consult her on buttons … I still learned a lot making this (there’s ice wool in the sleeve cap!) and I do want this coat for myself… so maybe by 2024 I’ll have one 🤞🤞 ✂️ Pattern : #SOI1960sCoat BY @sewoveritlondon ✂️ Fabric : Wool cashmere from @supercheapfabrics & poly lining from the @adelaidesewists fabric swap in 2021 #supercheapfabrics Plus an accurate @kylieandthemachine label #katmlabels 👍

Behold, my greatest creation yet! I adore 60s fashion, so I had been planning to tackle the @sewoveritlondon 1960s coat (or in my case jacket) for some time! I’m super proud of the fact that I: 🪡pattern matched where possible 🪡matched the covered buttons to the checks 🪡did bound buttonholes instead of machine, and matched them to the checks too This was a level of attention to detail that I have never shown before and never plan to show again. I did the cropped jacket and I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be this short or if I did it wrong? But I am high-waisted or die so I’m down with it. The fabric is wool from @fabworksmillshop and I have to say, I love wool. It’s malleable, it’s warm, it’s nice and stable to sew with, it’s just the greatest winter fibre.🐑

How gorgeous is this 1960s Coat made by @poeticmemorysewing? Erin made her coat extra special with a scalloped front edge and we are obsessed 😍 The wool covered buttons are a beautiful finishing touch for this pattern and lucky for you we have a class on Stitch School to show you how to make them! I've had my eye on the Sew Over It 1960's coat for quite awhile now, but didn't have the confidence to try it. The pattern was in a SOI sale before Christmas so I took the plunge and purchased it. The outer fabric was a Christmas gift from one of my sons. This pattern took me two and a half weeks to make up. Firstly I had to stick my pattern together and there's quite a few pages. I should have thought about this and ordered the A0 printing, but I'm so used to just having the pdf version and printing myself! Once I had my paper pattern pieces cut out I decided to make a toile, something I've not bothered with before, but I wanted to check the sizing. I'm glad I did, as I found it a little tight under my arm, so needed to make a little adjustment to give me a bit extra room. Once I was happy with the fit I cut my fabric out. I was terrified about doing this, as when I purchased the fabric, there was less than 1/2 a metre left on the roll, so no room for any errors😱 I took my time with this pattern, and have to admit to being quite daunted at the prospect of sewing up this coat. The step by step instructions were very straightforward to follow and I didn't have any problems in making it up. I am so, so pleased with how my coat has turned out, and still can't quite believe I made it😃 One thing I have learnt from this project is to not be put off trying something different. It has given me so much more confidence now in my sewing abilities. Thanks SOI for such a fabulous pattern with great instructions! The fabric is a coating (soft coat) in colour Aubergine bought from Escape and Create in St. Ives. #handmade #sewing #sewoveritlondon #soi1960scoat #escape_and_create_uk #homesewing #memadewardrobe #imakemyownclothes #memade #sewingismypassion ##jukiclub ##franklinscolchester ##jukisewing

The Sew Over It 1960s Coat has been a long time coming. I started it two years ago and wimped out of the pattern matching involved with the checked coating I had bought, and made the Vienne coat instead. But this coat stayed in my head so this year I bit the bullet and made it. It’s an investment piece (as the influencers say) because the fabric was expensive and the time commitment was huge but this is a timeless classic that I will be able to wear time and time again for many years to come. The fabric is #harristweed from @harristweed_harris who were really helpful with my questions re prewashing (the answer was don’t, it had already been washed and pre-shrunk). It’s a lovely navy blue herringbone and was wonderful to sew with - really stable and hardly any fraying. The pattern is good, I omitted the top buttons so I could wear it with the collar open and I love that. As usual I had to grade the sizes as I am a bigger size in the hips than the shoulder, and actually that put me outside the size range of this pattern so I had to wing it a bit but I toiled it of course. What I disliked was all the hand stitching to sew up the hems. It took forever! I think a bagged out coat is probably my preference. But I am thrilled with this coat. I wore it out last night and it was warm and comfortable and I felt so good in it. I love it! If all that waffling isn’t enough I’ve got a whole blog on it #linkinbio and the saga of the make is saved as a story highlight. @sewoveritlondon #soi1960scoat #harristweedcoat #woolcoat #imadethis #sewtheprecious #sewistsofinstagram #sew #memade #sewingcoats #sewover50december #sewover50 #sewingblog #sewingblogger #isewmyownclothes #isewmyclothes #herringbonetweed #maker

As we’re virtually half way through the year I thought I’d check in on my #makenine2023 and it’s fair to say, it’s going well. 1. Pink denim jacket of dreams ✅ I used the #itchtostitchatenasjacket @itchtostitch 2. Was to use some quilted fabric Mr Minigems bought me to make a gilet. I opted out of the pattern he gave me and made #oakleyvest @lovenotions instead as I preferred the pockets.✅ 3. Was either #nelldress @thedressmakerscloset or #laundrydayteedress @lovenotions and I’ve actually made both 😎✅ 4. Cropped jeans, I’ve made two pairs ✅ 5. #quadrajeans @threadtheorydesigns for Mr Minigems ✅ 6. Refashion of an old memade tee I never wore. I adjusted it slightly and still didn’t wear it so cut it up and used the fabric to make a completely different pattern instead. Much better. ✅ 7. Xmas jumpers - I won’t be making those until November 🗓️ 8. Birthday gift bags, more sustainable than gift wrap ✅ 9. Knitting. Hmmm this is the problem child. I have barely done any knitting this year, I’m just not feeling it. Tempted to write this off. So if we gloss over the knitting failure, it’s looking pretty good, no? Future plans include a @sewoveritlondon #soi1960scoat in #harristweed and I fancy another denim jacket but made in offcuts of denim from all the jeans I’ve made. But knowing me, it’ll be months before those are started! #sewistsofinstagram #sew #makenine #imadethis #imakemyclothes #sewingblogger #sewover40 #sewingjeans #pinkdenimjacket

Flinging myself into the end of February by completing my new #soi1960scoat I started this earlier in Feb at @gather.scotland sewing retreat hosted by the lovely @jenerates @little.rosy.cheeks ❤️ I didn’t get it finished as I wasn’t feeling too well 🤕 However I’ve managed to pick myself up and get it completed just in time for this month’s #magamsewalong #februaryfling hosted by @morag_cj @sewing_in_spain and @suestoney👏👍 The inspiration for making my coat came from the lovely @northernsewlsisters #sewjacketswithnss challenge - without that inspo I doubt I’d have pushed myself to start this coat. Thanks lovely ladies❤️ All in all, pleased with my finished coat. I’m v proud of the pattern matching of the check and the fabric is just so soft and cuddly from @fabworksmillshop 💕 Final touch is my lovely label from #littlerosycheekslabels #littlerosycheeks #sewover50 #sewscottish #slowsewer #sew #sewing #sewcialist #imadethis #sewcialists #handmadewardrobe #sewmyownclothes #memadeeveryday #sewersofinstagram #lovesewing #sewingismytherapy ❤️🌈✂️

Finally got around to photographing this. One of my favourite makes ever and it’s already had lots of wear. The pattern is the @sewoveritlondon 1960’s coat. I had just enough fabric to do the long version. The fabric was some beautiful deadstock boucle fabric I managed to snap up last autumn from @fabricgodmother and the lining is @libertyfabrics Betsy print silk satin. The instructions were great to follow and the only change I did was not to put in shoulder pads. I used French seams in the lining. I also got my button holes professionally done at a shop in Soho as they were too big for my machine. That was great fun in itself! ##fabricgodmother #libertyfabric #soi1960scoat

Here are #mymakesforthemonth for December, thanks to @sewmuchtodesign for hosting. The big achievement was the #soi1960scoat which I started back in October. It’s made from #harristweed from @harristweed_harris It was a big project but I love the finished garment. Other than that, I made a #sewingbillie sweatshirt in floral fleece and a matching beanie hat. I made another beanie hat to match my Christmas sweatshirt. And I made a wooden handled shopping bag in waxed cotton. I made a coat! Finally got around to this project after making Christmas gifts. It is the @sewoveritlondon 1960’s coat and the fabric is a wonderful vegan wool @minervadotcom with their red taffeta lining fabric. I used ice wool at the shoulders and made shoulder pads from bra inserts. The pattern is OK, made simpler by the fact I’d made the TATB Eden jacket before. The main lining was still a bit of a faff to set correctly at the hem, allowing for some overlap. I liked the collar and pocket construction and the slightly A-line shape is very flattering. Just need to add a jigger button on the inside and a label. #soi1960scoat #sewingcoats #veganwool #veganwoolcoats #sewingalining #linings #makingcoats #winterwardrobe #winterwardrobeessentials #memadewardrobe #memadeeveryday #makersofinstagram #sewersofinstagram #iwearwhatisew #iwearwhatimake #vegansewer #sewover50 #sewover50coats

Emma in her @sewoveritlondon #soi1960scoat Style comments: a lovely classic shaped double breasted coat, collared, fully lined. Making comments: My second coat - first of this pattern. Simple instructions easy to follow. I followed the tailoring instructions to the letter (see the tailor tacks in photo 8!!) and it was worth it. New skills included using ice wool in the sleeve heads. There is a lot of interfacing. I laid out all my pattern pieces that needed interfacing and then interfaced that entire area of wool in one go before cutting the pieces which I think really helped them keep their shape. Fit comments: Available in UK6-30 (B 31-57, H 34-60). I made a size 10. Emma is 158cm tall, particularly short in the upper torso, so I raised the bust line and then further raised the waist line (I think about 3cm and 2cm) Emma wanted a bit of the “swing” of the coat reduced so I look I think a total of 4 cm out of the waist (1cm from each side seam and each centre back seam allowance) just with a graduated curve. I didn’t take any out of the hips. Obviously here she only have a thin top on with out a jumper so it looks a bit more oversized than it actually is! I think I shortened the sleeves slightly. Materials: Main Fabric: @tedbaker #deadstock boiled wool -beautiful quality, only issue is the wool smell, which we’ve been working on getting rid of, current plan is baking soda to absorb it and then vacuuming it. Lining: leopard print polyviscose marrocain both from @rainbowfabrickilburn The buttons are self covered with black viscose scraps. Swipe to see Emma loving her coat, pics 5 and 8 are my favs! ❤️ I’m trying to get better at using this page to document my sewing journey! Hence the not amazingly set up fit related photos with Emma in her WFH outfit underneath, but I’m challenging myself to post once a day for the rest of January, so there’s no time for perfectly posed/set up photos! ID: A series of photos of a white, brunette young woman in a red double breasted collared coat with black buttons, in front of a white wall and door with some household items in the background. She is smiling throughout and her arms are held in various positions.

Finished the coat!! Woohoo!! Started work on this last September, and have been slowly dipping in and out of it since. Finished the lining earlier in the week, and then finally did the buttons today. The pattern intends for there to be “double breasted” buttons, but I quite like them just on the one side. It’s jaunty. Besides, by the time I’d put these on I’d sewn on 14 buttons between different projects today, and that’s quite enough thank you. If anyone is thinking of asking me to make one for them, the answer is absolutely not. #SOI1960sCoat #SewOverIt #Dressmaking #MeMade #MeMadeWardrobe #Sewing #SlowFashion #HomemadeClothes #HomemadeCoat #HomeSewn

I have never sewn with wool before, but I want to change that. I want some new clothes that I can wear to work and I love the vintage-y style but I will never find work attire in these fabrics in my size in a store. I have been collecting deadstock over the last couple of years for specific patterns, and am finally feeling brave enough to cut into them. I think. But they are just so beautiful I don't want to mess it up! I have 2 light weight wools that will probably become #mmShepherd skirts by #MerchantandMills , 2 lightweight suitings that I plan to use for a Phoebe Dress and a Selene Skirt from #seamwork , and 2 midweight coatings that I want to use for a lined #PonaJacket by #helenscloset and a #soi1960sCoat from #sewoveritlondon . Mon manteau noir de plus près - closer shots of my 1960s Coat... I have so enjoyed wearing this coat over the past two weeks! Sewing a coat is so time-consuming and labour-intensive, not to mention the techniques involved, but I always find it to be quite worth it - you get to wear a coat every day! I made this to replace a coat I sewed in 2013 and that I literally wore to the bones. The pattern has a gorgeous shape and style, but I feel the finishing and instructions could be improved - the joining of the shell to the lining in particular could be streamlined and yield an easier and cleaner finish. The fabric comes from couture deadstock; the lining is cupro, which is a less unsustainable choice than traditional synthetic lining, while having similar slip and antistatic properties. __ #SewOverIt #InstaSew #InstaSewing #InstaCouture #IMakeMyClothes #PassionCouture #SewingInspiration #SewingCommunity #WinterSewing #MeMadeStyle #PetiteSewing #JeCoudsMaGardeRobe #JeCoudsDoncJesuis #JePorteCeQueJeCouds #Cousu
