#frugalfrocks2021 Thank you so much to @frugalisama and @theyorkshiresewgirl for putting this challenge together. I have loved looking through my fabric piles and free patterns (both online and in my collection) to make something. It has taken me out of my comfort zone- hello, button holes... you’re not as scary as I thought! I simply loved this fabric for a summer dress and thought the pattern was a perfect match for fun in the sun. I made the #soilottiedress but with modifications. I made it an a-line skirt rather than the pattern’s proposed relaxed pencil/straight skirt. The chart measurements showed that I would have to grade from a size 14 bust to a size 20 hip. I knew I was endowed in the backside so this didn’t surprise me. When I made my toile, however, I found that it was what some might describe as a Carol Vorderman dress- made for standing. It fastened fine but I knew that one sit would result in my buttons popping. I was saddened to think that in a time of pattern companies being more size inclusive that a 48” hip was the top of the size range for this dress. I know that SOI are making more inclusive patterns now and I hope that they carry on doing so. Aaand this dress finally ready. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been in design conundrum for this mint linen fabric. It’s a lovely fabric (and I love linen!!) but when it arrived, I didn’t think it would suit my skin tone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ However, I was determined to sew outside of my comfort zone. I searched for a pattern to suit this colour (anyone else do this too?) from beach cover up, to a pleated skirt. Then, I remember seeing something from my mum’s wardrobe when I was little, a mint coloured garment. Perhaps a dress or a midi skirt, vague memory there but it had huge tortoiseshell style buttons, very 80s. I researched on Pinterest, and thought this colour would make a great 90s style dress! Couldn’t find faux tortoiseshell buttons, but these beige and brown ones work quite well I think. Thank goodness for the #sewjapaneseinjuly challenge; I've been putting off cutting into this precious Nano Iro double gauze since I bought it in Kyoto years ago! This is the @sewoveritlondon Lottie dress modified with 2cm total removed from the back neckline, 2cm removed from the front neckline, and sewn in the size 8 graded to size 10 at the hips. Red alert! I never used to wear it. Too bold and too loud, I thought. But then I assessed my colours and learned that I have a 'winter complexion' which means bright and vibrant colours make me pop and pastels wash me out. So, here I am in a very red @lisacomforthome cardigan and a new @sewoveritlondon Lottie dress made with a Lady Mcelroy cotton lawn. My goal was to not let the fabric from the @sewhayleyjane boxes sit in my stash for too long, or at all. I have now gotten 4 boxes, but when I made this is was waiting for the last box. This fabric was from my second box. I really struggled to decide on a pattern for this fabric. When I saw simply sewing had the @sewoveritlondon #soilottiedress with their magazine I decided to wait for the pattern, so I did and I made it just in time for the last box. I do like the dress, but I had some issues with the fit. It is quite hard to fit this because the straps are also the binding. I would recommend basting these. I took in the straps afterwards because I did not feel like unpicking everything. The only problem now is in the back, it is soooo wide it has a huge gap! I might try another version next summer and see if I can fit it better. I picked these buttons up recently and by accident it matches the colour of the cherries quite well. My goal now is to sew up the new fabric before the next arrives. I might actually make the pattern included, or is that boring? #soilottiedress - the back gaps, the improvised box pleat was a fail but it’s a great little sundress for the beach

My Sew Over It Lottie dress, made from an old cotton duvet cover, dyed blue- was meant to be navy but it came out this sort of chambray blue. Really easy make, my sway back has made the back crease up at the back but I don't mind it. I made a size between 8 and 10 for chest and graded to a 12 for my hips. I had to take it in quite a lot to give it some shape as it is a very straight pattern. I love this dress, it's summery and it comes together quickly, love the bias binding detail and gathering. Not feeling particularly confident at the moment? Me neither, so follow @katiekortmanart advice and #justtouchyourhair No matter how smooth our move to Amsterdam has been - and truly we have no complaints, everyone has been wonderful - anxiety will always creep in during busy periods and for me that means pesky ED thoughts and behaviours that just love to try and make a home in my daily life. Everyone will have different measures of dealing with this but for me I can’t actually sew when wound up as I’ll end up making mistakes or talking myself out of the make. Instead this weekend I took a long walk, went for a jog to get the endorphins going, caught up on sewing vlogs and planning and did a LOT of crochet which I find really mindful and soothing. Just wanted to share this as a reminder that #instagramvsreality is important to remember and if you need a bit of self care, get it! Morning all 😊 Sorry not been active for a few days, I'm back to work on a Saturday & then we always have a family day on Sunday. I haven't started another book yet, I have The Silent Patient waiting for me to start, but I just haven't felt inspired to start as yet & I've been busy on the machines. I do fancy making this for me though this week, I have a party to go to on Friday so thinking this will be nice to wear. Has anyone made this dress? Last day of #memademay2021 yesterday & I got to wear a dress I made for the #frugalfrocks2021 dressmaking challenge, even though I didn't finish it in time because I was poorly. I have really enjoyed #memademay this year & I have actually stuck to the challenge, even though I haven't been able to wear my item's everyday as I don't have enough, its been nice when I have the day off or the weekend to wear an item I've made & to have the confidence to wear it. I have made a few new items for my wardrobe too & I plan to sew through half term. Just need to finish my midtown cardigan now. How lush has this weather been after all that rain? So nice to be wearing summer dresses - I've always been self conscious about my legs so I put on some gradual tan & had them out the last few days! Is this a proof of #coronacoaster or just generally being a human? Do you ever look at your pictures thinking “if I never see that again it will be too soon?” I took those a couple of days ago when I was experiencing a definite dip in my mood. The dress was the only thing that made me smile that day and I couldn’t even get one decent photo of it (or so I thought). I look back and think “wow, I must have been really negative because, whilst not perfect, I think they’re decent enough to share”. So if you’re experiencing a dip today, I’m sending you a huge cuddle because we all need that sometimes, irrespective of how happy we are in life generally speaking. This is my latest make, a Lottie dress that honestly? I’m not that keen on. Mistakes I made include; 🌿I’d heard the back can be baggy and needs gathering, so true to form completely ignored this and ended up with a baggy dress. 🌿I got cocky with the straps so had to unpick them and take about 4.5cm off each 🙄 🌿I cut to my measurements but the 12 is too tight on my 40-and-a-whisper hips and bunches up when I walk, and not in a sexy Marilynesque way That said, I’m proud of the make for different reasons. Work/home life has been a bit wild lately with Big Scary Decisions seemingly at every corner (more on that soon!) so the snatched hours I’ve worked on this over the last few days have provided much needed escapism and self care. The magic of turning a flat piece of fabric into a garment never ceases to amaze me and, baggy back or not, I can throw a denim jacket over it until I can fix it - yes, fix it! I’ve been learning so much from the insta sewing community lately that I know there’s no such thing as a #sewingfail - with a few adjustments I can sort this out and make another version that fits much better.
