Another Lilian blouse today by Sew Over It. I love this pattern, the front and back darts give such a flattering fitted shape, and I particularly like the shawl collar. As this was my first attempt at this pattern, in fact any shirt pattern, I bought some fabric to make a wearable toile. I'm very happy with it😃 This was the first time I had tried doing buttonholes, up to this point I had done everything to avoid doing them 😂 My machine has an automatic buttonhole function, but I had been too nervous to try it out, now I wish I had tried it sooner🤦‍♀️A lesson to be learnt from that for me, don't be put on trying something new! It is definitely still winter in my part of the world, but I'm attempting to will spring here by sewing more spring-like clothes. This is the @sewoveritlondon #lilianblouse 💖. It's my first time making this pattern so I have planned a few more tweaks for next time, but this first version is quite wearable so that's a 👍 from me! I forked out a few extra bucks for the Stitch School tutorial on the collar and it was truly excellent. I probably could have made my way based on the instructions, but I wasn't in the mood and just wanted to go the easy route. The video support was just what I wanted as it allowed me to get through the trickier bit without any stress or head scratching 🤩. The fabric is from way down deep in the stash. Yes, I've not posted for ages. My sewing has also been sporadic. Mainly due to chronic illness which made me fatigued, and medication which led to my weight ballooning , then coming down again,which made sizing anything difficult. If I'm tired already then why spend time sewing something that may not fit me in 3 months? Anyway, things are finally stabilising, hooray, and earlier this year I made a @sewoveritlondon Lilian blouse, which I wore for work today. I really like it and the phlebometist commented on how nice my top was when I went for my blood test this morning 😊. #soililianblouse, cotton lawn fabric . Right faff sewing all the darts, collar, facings, understitching & buttonholes … seemed to take forever. Could have left the buttonholes off as the blouse goes on and off okay without functional buttonholes.

#SewAprilBlouse23 So here she is, the @sewoveritlondon Lilian blouse - another departure from my usual ‘style’, but one that I absolutely love! I bought the pattern as soon as it was released, as I absolutely fell in love with a couple of versions I’d seen - Lisa’s monochrome version and Laura @sewinglikethewolf gorgeous pattern insider version. The very lovely Gabrielle @cloth_edit let me choose a fabric from her website for this project and I was drawn to this 100% cotton - the small scale floral print and the colours were just what I was looking for. I have to say the fabric was a pleasure to sew with - isn’t it lovely sewing with cotton? The buttonholes were a breeze! Speaking of buttons, if you zoom in you will see the most beautiful @pigeonwishes.shops Kaleidoscope buttons - they couldn’t be more perfect! I haven’t sewn many Sew Over It patterns, but I was super impressed by the instructions. I made View A (with the fisheye darts) in a straight size 12 and the fit is ideal for me. It’s perfect for tucking in to my high-waisted jeans! I fell for the new Lilian Blouse pattern from @sewoveritlondon as soon as it came out last month and was so excited to try it. It is my very first shirt with a shawl collar (or any type of complicated collar) and I still can hardly believe I was able to sew it. I did buy the add-on video class that walks you through the process to help me out. It probably isn't worth it if you've ever sewn one before, but I found it reassuring and helpful. The next challenge came when I realized my machine was not going to cooperate on the buttonholes and I had to do them by hand. They are not the neatest, but you can barely see them with this busy print, so it's fine. ***** Gros coup de cœur pour la blouse Lilian de Sew Over It dès sa publication le mois dernier. C'est ma première cousette avec un vrai col châle (ou n'importe quel col compliqué) et c'est plutôt réussi. J'ai acheté le petit cours en ligne qui montre comment le faire et c'était rassurant de regarder la vidéo avant chaque étape, mais si vous avez déjà cousu un col compliqué, ce n'est pas la peine. Le prochain défi à surmonter était la machine à coudre qui ne voulait pas faire des boutonnières et j'ai fini par les faire à la main. I do love a pretty cotton blouse, and the Sew Over It Lilian pattern works a treat for me. I've worn this with jeans, but it looks equally good with more formal trousers. It's a very versatile pattern with 3 different sleeve lengths and the option to go more fitted with front and back darts as I have done here, or leave those out and go for a more boxy shape. The fabric is from a local store, who has now unfortunately closed down, and I brought it purely because I loved the design. At the time I had no idea what I was going to make with it. Here is my entry for #sewaprilblouse23. It is a lovely vintage inspired pattern from sew over it London #soilondon. It is the Lilian blouse #soililianblouse and I love it. Unfortunately, I skipped the FBA that I usually do on everything I make and went straight for it….result? It doesn’t button up across the bust😏all my own fault. But it fits my dear friend and so I’m going to gift it to her and make another to fit me, of course.

Sew Over It Lilian Blouse. I am still searching for the ultimate shawl collared blouse and decided to try this pattern. I had some 'Peach' crinkle dobby fabric that I thought would coordinate well with the Sage spotted pinafore dress. I cut size 20 at the shoulders, neckline & collar grading to 22 over the waist and hips. What I should have borne in mind was that the crinkle fabric stretches and therefore the garment would 'grow' when ironed but more of that later. Cutting out took 1.6M x 130cms fabric. I was able to include the long sleeve into a cuff. I used the serger to finish the seams. When constructing the blouse I found that all the notches matched up, quite something on this very mobile fabric! However, I found the drafting/construction of the collar overly complicated and the end result is very narrow in the back collar. At the fitting stage I found that the shoulders were (once again) far too wide, the bust dart too low (makes a change!) and the sleeves about 2 inches too long. To resolve the shoulder/sleeve length issues I re-stitched the sleeve insertion by sewing the top of the sleeves at least 1½ ins away from the cut edge. This also solved the problem of sleeves being too long as it took up some of the excess length. I liked the cuff construction although they are a little too big for my preference. I have adjusted the pattern in the shoulders and also taken 2 inches off the of the cuff. Regarding the overall excess of fabric in the body, I made the blouse double breasted. As I could still put the blouse on over my head I stitched the 10 buttons straight through all layers and did not go to the effort of making buttonholes that would never be used. I was unable to find any coordinating buttons and used 10 shell buttons from my recent bulk buy. Conclusion: I can't say that I am particularly pleased with the final result. In fact my husband agreed to let me make a shirt for him in this fabric 😉 any print that men agree to wear is a win in my book. A bit about this new fabric base - our midweight cotton is 148gsm and is pure cotton. It’s got no drape and handles like cotton poplin, which means it’s particularly great for shirts and perhaps even shorts! I know this will be my go-to for lighter coloured men’s shirts as it isn’t sheer even in a light base colour.
