Is a handmade swimsuit the ultimate holiday make?? I definitely think this is probably my proudest me made on holiday moment, and also not a picture I ever thought I would share on the internet 😂😂 This is the @sewoveritlondon Zahra Bikini, in a fab tropical swimsuit print from @likesewamazing. . I have to say, this swimsuit is the bomb. I have been struggling a bit with fit and feeling happy in some of my clothes recently, so of course the natural thing to do is to make a swimsuit, right?! But I am so glad I did, because I felt amazing in it!! . I made a size 14 too and 12 bottom (hurrah for separates!!). There are a few tweaks I will make next time, such as including a bust shelf and lifting the straps a bit. I think I’ll also make different bottoms as I prefer a cut that goes across my tummy rather than the high waist, but that is just personal choice. . I used the @sewoveritlondon Stitch School tutorial for this make, the videos were so helpful to guide me through each step, although the bikini top tutorial is for the version with strap adjusters and I didn’t realise until too late so I had to cut it again🙈 luckily I had enough to cut a new top, and I used the other one as a quick toile to check the fit. I also make a very rough mock up in a jersey first, which this didn’t give me an idea of fit (because the stretch is so different) it did allow me to check coverage and I added 1cm to the top of the cups after making that quick toile. . This came together surprising quickly and was actually a really enjoyable sew. I made it in small sessions so as not to overwhelm myself, but it honestly wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. . That was a long post 😂 I’ll try and do a stories soon on making this if people are interested because it was a really fun process. Let’s talk swimwear… Have you tried swim and power mesh fabrics? Making your own swimwear can be a daunting challenge but means you can make a unique garment that suits your personality, style and fits you perfectly! The fabric, lining, power mesh and elastic choices are many and often come down to personal preference. Your choice of elastic may depend on where you plan to swim as some are less tolerant to salt or chlorine, and swim fabrics are now available made entirely from recycled polyester fibres. You don’t need an overlocker/serger to sew swimwear as the material is not prone to fraying and is sewn up entirely with stretch stitch like zigzag, triple zigzag or lightning bolt stitch. We’ve had a last burst of summer weather here in Wisconsin just in time to get this make to the lake! I enjoy making swimwear, and while this one is wearable, the pattern ended up missing the mark. I used Minerva’s printed swim/athletic fabric for the first time as a #MinervaBrandAmbassador so I’ll give you my thoughts on that! I made the Simplicity S9620 sports bra for the top and used the Sew Over It Zahra bikini bottom. (I’ve actually made the Zahra before but haven’t posted it.) I made size 16 graded down to 14 in the hips. The S9620 top, on the other hand… I made the 1X from the larger size range of this pattern and that became the crux of the problem. Looking at the standard size sample, the top should have a high neck and the center panel should be narrow in proportion to the side panels. Unfortunately, the grading for the larger sizes of this pattern was not at all thoughtfully done. It seemed they just made every pattern piece larger without thought for how bodies are actually shaped and maintaining the original proportions of the design. As you can see, the neck is low and wide on me, and that’s after I took about four inches of circumference out in an attempt to correct the extreme misshapen neckline. The center front panel is also much wider than expected. Overall, I’m disappointed I wasn’t able to get the high-necked design I expected because of extremely poor pattern grading. The Minerva swim fabric was great for this project! The only personal issue I had with it was how shiny it is. The online photos didn’t depict that, so I attempted to include one that does. I prefer a more matte swim fabric. This fabric is nice quality and has lovely vibrant colors. I love this bright floral print! Definitely a great swim/athletic option if you’re into a little shine! My next vacation is coming soon and I needed some new swim wear😁👙🌞. I went for the #soizahrabikini from @sewoveritlondon and used the instructions from the #soistitchschool. I normally don’t wear a bikini but I wanted to give it a try. First I made a toile from the turquise swimwear fabric and cut and sewed a straight size 12 with bust side sling and under-bust elastic for extra support. As for the top, I had to shorten the straps by 1 inch and the bottoms were too big and I sized down to a 10. The one with the polka dots fits perfectly, the top gives enough support and the bottoms with the wide elastic highlights the waist nicely👍. As I had some more fabric in my stash, I sewed up two more #soizahrabikini . Once I like a pattern I sew it serveral times😍. I attempted to make a swim suit last year and it was a disaster. Not one to give up, I had another go, this time the #soizahraswimsuit by @sewoveritlondon. Very happy with the results and it didn't fall apart. So my final #makenine2023 has been achieved in 2024 😁

Me made may 2023 Another year done and I loved the increased OOTD photos. And I sort of loved that I didn’t feel like I had to add mine, you all know what I’ve made and if I feel like it I’ll share and if not, no pressure! This is a hobby, not a job. I think we all make plans and put pressure on ourselves to keep up and this month has been nice to enjoy from afar! My pledges were to up the sewing ante for myself and make @sewoveritlondon Zahra swimsuit and the @closetcorepatterns Jenny Overalls. Well, I got one completed and I’ve the Overalls toiled and cut out. So taking that as a win! I was worried about sewing a swimsuit but it was actually quite simple. I joined stitch school for their masterclass and it was a great resource. Really held my hand. I loved the bit where the instructor was sewing and her fabric slid about slightly and she said “listen, it’s happens, doesn’t need to be perfect”. I love this. I made the size 12 straight up and I like the fit. I can’t really swim so this isn’t a “working swimsuit”, it’s for taking my son to the splash pool etc. it’s hard to comment on fit because fabric plays such a part with garments like this, however if I was swimming lengths I’d have taken this in a bit. If making it again I will also add a bit of length. But hey, wearable swimsuit! Two days and 3 swimsuits 🩱 done, one for me and two for Lisa😊 Mine is the Zahra swimsuit from Sew Over It and I am really happy with it. When I saw this fabric I knew that it will be perfect for the Zahra. This is a really easy pattern, it is a pattern that comes with a sewing class on the Sew Over It Stitch School so there is everything in one😍 There is also a bikini option! During the class, the swimsuit is sewn in such a way that there minimal seams visible which makes for a really nice finish. I added in mine a center back seam as I need that shaping at the back.
