MAKE NINE 2024 - UPDATE! Hadn’t done a Make Nine grid before, so I decided to give it a go this year. Fitting 9 makes in 12 months is harder than it looks! However, I did manage more than half of them, so that’s something 🎉 TOP ROW: Vogue V1943 and S8844 - this actually became Vogue V1870, which I made with this glorious cotton sateen from @minervadotcom. This is easily my most favourite make of 2024, which I wore for my 60th birthday celebrations. I felt amazing wearing it! Tilly And The Buttons Iris pants - I really thought this year was going to be the year of making my own pants! Sadly not, but maybe next year? Tilly And The Buttons Agnes top - I just couldn’t decide which fabric to use, so ended up not making it at all. MIDDLE ROW: Prima pattern October 2020 - turns out this pattern doesn’t go up to my size 🙄 Sew Over It Viola dress - Had my eye on this pattern for ages and actually started making it in June! Mind you, it’s still not finished… I’ve done everything but the buttons. The fabric is a beautiful viscose challis, once again from @minervadotcom. The pattern is from @sewoveritlondon. Sew Over It Norah dress - I’d intended to make this in a beautiful green linen that my husband bought me when we went to Rome in 2023, but I only picked 3 metres - not enough! BOTTOM ROW: McCalls M6044 (view C) - my first and only men’s shirt, so far. Made this for my lovely husband in a lovely light cotton from @Minervadotcom. Zadie jumpsuit, hacked with the legs from Simplicity S9382 dungarees - this ended up being a straightforward Zadie jumpsuit as the hacked legs just didn’t look right when I tried them. The fabric for this one is a cotton poplin from @Minervadotcom again! Modern Manda Convertible bag - the first time I’d tried making a rucksack-type of bag, and it showed! Me Made May was one of the many reasons I wanted to start sewing - seeing so many makes under the hashtag and realising that anything was possible. Last May I had been sewing two or three months and wasn’t ready to share. This year, pretty much all the clothes I wear are handmade, but I’ve got out of the habit of photographing them. So my aims this month are to capture my unphotographed makes - because seeing fat people in patterns makes it much easier for me to decide whether to make it - and to consider what I wear, what I reach for time and again, and what holes I have in my wardrobe to plan future makes. There will be outfit repeats. There will be no make up days. And hopeful I’ll rig up a selfie set up and not need to drag @edwardneillambert into the garden at 7.15 when I realised I’ve missed my bus and might as well grab a picture and get the next one. This is the @sewoveritlondon #soivioladress in a fab wax print bought from Hardwick Textiles in Upton Park, worn with a @sinclairpatterns #harpercardigan. The Viola has a slightly lengthened bodice and I needed to size up at least one size even after double checking my measurements, but now I have it right for me it’s love. The Harper is cropped a couple of inches shorter than even the cropped version, and I took it in a few inches at the waist. It’s made with a red sweatshirting from Sew Affordable Fabrics and is one of my most worn items - you’ll be seeing it LOTS this month. I’m a sucker for any vintage-inspired dress pattern so when @sewoveritlondon released their Viola Dress pattern I knew it was something I wanted to make. I tackled the blouse version last month and this month moved on to the dress. I just love all the vintage details - gathers galore, the wide waistband, the sleeves & cuff and of course the best bit, it has pockets! The shirring panel in the back waistband is also really clever as it gives you a really fitted shape but all the comfort you need when you’ve had a big lunch!
The fabric was gifted to me from @minervadotcom as I am a Minerva Brand Ambassador, it is a gorgeous cotton poplin which was perfect for this make as it has great structure but is also super soft and a real dream to work with. The purple colour immediately caught my eye and I absolutely love any kind of polka dot. This is quite an involved make but I’m so happy with the outcome! I cut a size 13, added 6cm to the bodice length and removed 7cm from the hem.

My latest make. Actually finished at the end of October but at 11pm the day before I wanted to wear. I only managed to get late night photos in a hotel corridor (see last photo!). Ad: gifted pattern @sewoveritlondon released their latest pdf pattern today, the Viola Blouse & Dress. Such lovely vintage styling on this pattern, classic Sew Over It! 😍 I made a size 13 and added 6cm to the lengthen/shorten line as I was worried it would be too high even with high-waisted trousers/skirts. It absolutely was, even with the additional length added it’s still only just about wearable with my highest-waisted trousers. If I make the blouse again I’d probably double what I added! When I make the dress version the weight of the skirt will obviously help ‘pull’ it down but I think I’ll still leave the extra 6cms in. Once again shirring was nearly the death of me 😱 I don’t know what it is with me and shirring but we seem to be the greatest of enemies, it took me nearly two hours and a lot of swearing to get a useable panel 😂🤐 There’s so many great techniques in this pattern, from the burrito yoke to the turn up sleeves and the fitted look that the shirring gives is fab - all the nipped in waist you want from a vintage styled pattern but with the comfort of elasticity! Sew Over It Viola Dress As a pattern insider for @sewoveritlondon I was excited to make the new #SOIVioladress because it’s a shirt dress, and we know I will make all the shirt dresses! I love the vintage look of this dress and the shirred panel in the back of the waist. I made a size 10 graded to a 12 at the waist, which I probably didn’t need to do, because of the ease in the shirred panel. I used the longer cuffed sleeve option. I made it in a viscose poplin I bought from @lamazifabrics. This pattern has some interesting finishing techniques that made me think but ultimately has a lovely finish and worth the effort. I think that I would make the shorter sleeves next time because I don’t love where these sleeves hit. But overall this dress is a win for me and I always love wearing a shirt dress! A little adventure - sprog is with her grandparents so @edwardneillambert and I snuck to North Berwick for the first time in forever for fish and chips by the sea, gifts and baubles from @timeandtidestores and getting happily carried away in @chandlersnb - I’d never made it further than the beautiful artisan dyed yarn before, but this time explored the back of the shop and bought enough for a lovely big crochet blanket for the sofa. I was also wearing my newly finished @sewoveritlondon #soijessiecoatigan for the first time - pattern and materials were my Christmas present from Neil. I’m just thrilled with it - perfect for light pootling around the shops. And my much worn but never photographed sew over it #soivioladress - made in denim with press studs not buttons, I wear it all the time - and as this picture makes very clear, hadn’t ironed it since it was last washed!

Ad: gifted pattern @sewoveritlondon released their latest pdf pattern today, the Viola Blouse & Dress. Such lovely vintage styling on this pattern, classic Sew Over It! 😍 I made a size 13 and added 6cm to the lengthen/shorten line as I was worried it would be too high even with high-waisted trousers/skirts. It absolutely was, even with the additional length added it’s still only just about wearable with my highest-waisted trousers. If I make the blouse again I’d probably double what I added! When I make the dress version the weight of the skirt will obviously help ‘pull’ it down but I think I’ll still leave the extra 6cms in. Once again shirring was nearly the death of me 😱 I don’t know what it is with me and shirring but we seem to be the greatest of enemies, it took me nearly two hours and a lot of swearing to get a useable panel 😂🤐 There’s so many great techniques in this pattern, from the burrito yoke to the turn up sleeves and the fitted look that the shirring gives is fab - all the nipped in waist you want from a vintage styled pattern but with the comfort of elasticity!
