Back on documenting late winter/early spring sewing. This is the Selena skirt from Sew Over It. It's the type of skirt I feel more comfortable wearing in comparison to the flared shape of the Dominique. I made a straight size 12 according to my measurements and took very little off the length even though I'm really short, so it's worth seeing if you need to extend the pattern if you're tall and want a longer skirt. The skirt is bias cut with a narrow turned over elastic waistband and was very simple to make. Mine is a black and ivory print viscose I've had in my stash for many, many years. It was originally from a remnant table in a small independent fabric shop and seems to be that elusive pairing of perfect pattern for the fabric 🎉 I think it would also look lovely in a satin or possibly a stretch velvet (I have some of this so am considering it for next winter). DIY holiday wardrobe activated! 🎄❄️🧣 We’re on holiday this week to the Christmas markets of Cologne, Strasbourg and Brussels and loving the festive cheer! I haven’t brought too many me-mades with me as practicalities call for jumpers and jeans, two things I don’t sew much. However this new skirt had to come in the case and I quite like it styled for winter! It’s #n6623 in a leopard satin fabric that was a pain in the ass to sew but looks so pretty 🐆 A note on the sizing: I made a 16 but would add more seam allowance next time. I can feel self conscious of my double dip hips and tummy and this does cling there, but with a jumper over the top I think it looks good. For a more size inclusive option check out the #soiselenaskirt which is similar and free for VIP club members. There’s lots of bias skirt sewing tutorials out there so I’ve not much to add except it’s worth the time to make French seams and let it hang for any fabric to drop. I was really not mad about my #sewfrugal23 make no 1 - to the extent that I wasn’t going to share it, but when taking photos for make no 2 I thought I might as well…. And I kind of don’t hate it? This is the bias cut #soiselenaskirt in a viscose from @rainbowfabrickilburn that’s been in the stash for a looooong time. When I first tried it on after making it the fit was a little bit insane. Lumpy even. But I let it hang for a couple of weeks and it now appears to be lump-free (apart from me) 🥳 I *might* wear this. In the summer. Maybe.

Ok, I get it now. Since I was a kid and heard bias cut skirt on nearly every episode from Trinny and Susanna on What Not to Wear (don't judge me), I knew a bias cut skirt was a staple. As an adult, I heard it was a mark of quality for a brand to make bias cut skirts. I didn't think they were for me, I'm not a straight skirt person, not liking how they cling or sit on tummy or hips - but I get it now. This was an experiment, but one I'll do again for sure. You can't really see very well in the pics but I love this viscose jacquard from Sew Me Sunshine (pic at the end), think I'm in my animal print era. I have some left so probably make a co-ord cami in the future! .
