It's been ages since I made a York Pinafore. This one is a size 18 but with smaller seam allowances around my hips. I gave my last one to my lovely slim sister as I accidentally got the size lines muddled. Worn with one of my lovely Scout Tees in a heart print viscose. Also purple tights because I got dressed in the dark but I actually quite like how they look.

So, I approached this "with a rules are more guidelines and imma ignore them" vibe. And I could not be happier with what I did. This amazing and gorgeous maxi panel from the @als.alley A Few Enchanted Things round called to me. It told me it belonged in my life. And I agreed. I used the @helens__closet York pattern - but this is cotton spandex and I lengthened it to maxi length. Under the York is the Lovesick bralette from @georgeandgingerpatternco (this pattern has been updated, but I have mine perfectly fitted, so I'm not changing things). The bralette is neon green liquid satin also from Al's Alley. Took me more time than the plaid version I made as a muslin to make this. I'm so glad I made this earlier in the plaid flannel. It helped me make the changes I wanted.⁠ ⁠ The cotton twill gave me so much grief. The fabric curled on the cut edges as expected. But, this lightweight twill is a loose weave and the fabric was falling apart at the seams. I realized it when I started with the pockets.⁠ ⁠ I had to run to the 'matching centre' at my street corner to get lining fabric to stabilize the fabric. The twill is a bit see-through too. So, lining it was a good idea.⁠ ⁠ Converting the dress into a fully-lined piece changed the plans and I had to think on my feet. It all worked out in the end. 💪⁠ ⁠ I did the same modifications to the pattern as the plaid version, to make this an A-line dress. The original pattern has a cocoon shape with shorter length. I made it A-line and lengthened it to my preference. I increased the flare a bit more in this than the plaid version. We’ve had an epic sewcation! My dear aunt Annebel was visiting from the US. It’s deep, deep summer here and I desperately need a haircut so please enjoy these sweaty, disheveled photos. I made this hacked @helens__closet York pinafore late last year before an epic road trip. I wanted something easy to throw on that could be layered depending on the weather. Super happy with the result, easy wash and wear and on high rotation over the weekends now. Fabric is a textured cotton blend with a bit of heft and a slightly stiff hand. The type of fabric that actually feels stiffer when wet. Construction wise I shortened the straps, added possibly wonky patch pockets and omitted the bias binding by lining the bodice with a matching cotton lawn. I finally made a Helen’s Closet York Pinafore, and I love it! These pockets are amazing! I can stick half my arm in them! My favorite feature is that I fully lined the pockets (sewed lining to main fabric except for where it met the side seam, clipped and turned and pressed, then sewed on). I love that not only is there little peeks of color, but that I get to touch the soft fabric every time I put my hand in these pockets. For the main part, I followed the lining tutorial off the blog and did the burrito method. The lining fabric was something random that I got from a fabric bundle and it felt soft but was ANNOYING to work with. In the end, I got it all together and I think it’s super cute! I’m making another out of some denim in View B. I wanted to take these photos at our local bookstore instead, but we didn't end up going last weekend and instead I just asked Dustin to take these for me really quick. I was too excited to make, wear, and document this pinafore! My previous one was basically a test run with this fabric being the vision. Linen/cotton blend from @riflepaperco's 'Curio' fabric line. I had to buy this as soon as we got it at work because I've been doing a lot more reading lately and have really rediscovered my love of books over the past year or so. I am SO proud of my pattern matching on the pockets!! I traced the pocket piece onto pattern ease, placed it over the pocket guide markings on my front piece (already cut), and traced exactly where the books would sit on the pockets, then took the pocket pattern piece over to my extra fabric and lined it up with exactly the part that I needed and cut from there. I did this twice, using a Frixion pen so that I could erase it with heat and then trace again for the opposite pocket on the reverse side of the same pattern piece. This outfit was cuter without the sweater but also it was COLD when we took these! Anyway, I'm just so pleased with how this came out. I even had an easier time with the puckering at the waist area-- it turns out that last time, I forgot to clip in the curve and I actually think that made a big difference. Pattern details are the same as my last post: size 14, graded to a size 12 hip, added 1.5" to the front upper bodice as an FBA, and took away an inch from the lower bodice shorten line, and .5" from the bottom. #yorkpinafore #helensclosetyorkpinafore #handmadewardrobe #riflepapercocurio #patternmatching

I did a few stitches in the plane but spent more time looking at the clouds out the window, trying to ignore the turbulence. And my downtime consisted of watching YouTube videos with the bf-- which I could've done a few stitches, but I didn't. Ahh I was just lazy to pick up the hook. . But I managed to finish a lot of projects, crochet- and sewing-wise, on my list in 2021 despite having a job. I learned a lot, relearned how to operate a sewing machine, made clothes from patterns, and drafted my own pattern from a top I already own. And made a lot of mistakes, which is v important 👍 . I also gave away some of my hoarded yarns! Also proud of that. 😁 . This year, let's have more arts and crafts adventures, whatever it is you like doing, and make more mistakes. Very excited to receive these two fabric deliveries over the past week. The first is a jumbo cord in magenta from @1stforfabrics and packed by Tamlyn from @sewn_on_the_tyne - thanks Tamlyn 🥰. It’s going into the washing machine today and next week I’m hoping it will become a @helens__closet York pinafore. I did make this a few years ago and it just didn’t look good…there was something about it that didn’t sit right on me. But I revisited it a few weeks ago, made some adjustments to the pattern, made a quick toile and hopefully it’ll look fabulous! The second (2nd fabric) I managed to bag from @pennysews_destash account. Pop over to Penny’s destash account as she has some great fabrics to part with. This lovely weight cotton jersey will be going in the wash early next week and will then become an oldie but goldie @sewoveritlondon Molly top (from one of their first ebooks). I’ve made this a couple of times, it’s a quick sew and a great pattern. After my first #yorkpinafore, I oddly enough never ended up making another one even though I wore it all the time until it no longer fit well! It's been on my list for a while now to revisit. Used a linen/cotton blend from @figofabrics by @ghazalrazavi_ that's been in my stash! I made a size 14, graded to a size 12 hip, added 1.5" to the front upper bodice as an FBA, and took away an inch from the lower bodice shorten line, and .5" from the bottom. Even though that's basically the same amount of shortening I did last time, for some reason it feels almost too short in back (strategically not pictured/posed to minimize). Maybe I never noticed before? I also just think this fabric tends to stick to my layers underneath it and ride up more than the canvas I used last time. Anyway, even though it's maybe not the world's most flattering garment and I partially think that's the point (it's all throw on and go comfort!), I still think the York is very cute and my next one will be made out of a book themed linen/cotton that I'm VERY excited about. Alors franchement entre le fait que je n'avais pas d'aiguilles de bonne qualités, le fait que je doute qu'utiliser du fil cordonnet a jean pour les surpiqures ai été une bonne idée.... j'ai vraiment cru que j'allais tuer Simon (oui ma Juki s'appelle Simon...).... et pourtant c'est pas un patalon avec pleins d'epaisseurs! Je lui ai deja fait faire 2 vestes en jeans... et ca allait... donc je pense que le fil cordonnet je ne me lancerais pas une deuxième fois dans l'expérience. meme si franchement, ca pete!!! Bon c'est pas parfait, l'étiquette de chez @kylieandthemachine n'est pas au milieu 😑, des fois la surpiqure du biais n'est pas top... mais sinon cette robe chasuble est top!!! tres confortable. Je l'ai voulu saillante du coup j'ai pris une taille de moins, voir 2... hum... c'était un peu juste du coup j'ai triché sur les marges de coutures.... et j'ai modifier l'encolure. Le tissu vient de chez @toto_1961_ un superbe coupon de 3m en coton. Le biais merci belle maman. At this time of year layering comes in to its own, and a pinafore dress worn like this, or with a cardigan thrown on over the top, covers the changeable weather we seem to get at the moment. This is the Helen's Closet York Pinafore Dress worn over my go to t-shirt pattern the Helen's Closet Dawson Top. I originally made my pinafore dress with the higher neck, but after wearing it a couple of times I decided to lower the neckline, so I removed the bias binding and sewed it up lower and I'm much happier with how this fits now. Like my other Helen's Closet Patterns, this was a nice straightforward sew with excellent instructions. 🎉 First make of 2023 yaaaay! 🎉 After pulling way too many long nights in December trying to crank out last-minute Christmas gifts, I was totally burnt out on sewing. The #yorkpinafore by @helens__closet was the perfect project to get back in the sewing headspace. Holy cow, this was a total joy to sew! I’ve made several patterns now from Helen’s Closet and they’re always a delight -- well-drafted and super-clear instructions. I made View A in the longer length. I lengthened the front upper bodice an inch, per Helen’s instructions for full bust alterations, plus added an additional 1.5 inches to the lower bodice. For reference, I’m 6’ and the pattern is drafted for someone 5’6”. The length would be perfect for a summer pinafore with sandals but on me, I t’s a bit awkward with tights. My next York will be in the shorter length and a teak corduroy from #blackbirdfabrics This fabric is a #seeyouatsixfabrics wide wale corduroy I got as a remnant from @good_fabric_store a few months ago. It’s pretty lightweight and I wasn’t too jazzed at first, but it’s perfect for this pinafore so I take back everything I ever said about it initially 😜. I cut the pockets on the bias for a bit of contrast. …Speaking of pockets… Scroll to the last pic for a demo of how epic these things are - I can cram my entire forearms in! When you’ve been working on something tricky (taxing.. mayhem..), it’s nice to have a little palate cleanser. This is the @helens__closet #helensclosetyorkpinafore apron expansion. The expansion pack gives you the crossover back pieces and several pocket options. The front piece is from the York Pinafore pattern. I made this out of some drill from the stash - I know not where it is from, but it’s tag told me it was a $3 remnant. That’s my kind of money. 🤣 The pattern went together really easily, although it did take around 6m of binding. Lucky I like making bias binding. I used every last scrap of the fabric, which is also very satisfying. My first make in a long time, the #yorkpinafore from @helens__closet patterns! I threw this together Sunday and Monday evening. The fabric is a canvas featuring a print by @bonniechristine. :) Made a size 8; even though my high bust measurement put me at a size 12, I figured it would be pretty forgiving and I feel like it is. I lengthened the front upper bodice by 2" according to the adjustment directions to take it from a B cup to an F. But also since it was drafted for a 5'6" figure (edit: i am 5'2") I shortened the pattern at the shorten lines by 2" as well. This was sort of my 'wearable muslin' and I'm pleased to say it worked perfectly! My favorite detail is the binding facing, which I made out of a fabric I happened to have enough of that also matched the color! It's cute and subtly space themed. I was so excited about the pockets that I didn't stop to ask myself if I should do another pose...I don't know any other poses...and this black top is also me made but it's not that great (cut with the grain going the wrong direction!
