Who says you can't get a little festive all year round? I picked it out in November with grand plans to sew these up around the time I was performing in a Gingerbread themed opera, Hansel and Gretel, but life became crazy busy, then my machine broke, and here I am sewing up my festive dungarees in January!⁠ ⁠ This was my first attempt at the Yantas and I have been admiring everyone else's for ages. I only really made one change, which is that I omitted the zip as I can get them on and off without, and no one needs to be bothering with unnecessary Zips! Generally I am pleased with the fit. I was concerned there might not be enough give around the tummy area but it is a very comfortable fit without feeling swamped. I can't make to make a corduroy pair next autumn! Also, there are so so many pockets!⁠ ⁠ The fabric is a really nice choice for this pattern - it is a good weight and I think I will mostly wear them for doing bits and bobs in our house and garden as they are quite sturdy. As you may have seen in my last post, I’ve joined the @helens__closet #yantaoveralls club and now know what all the hype was about! . As always, @helens__closet instructions were really easy to follow and I loved my experience and the overalls that resulted so much that I had to make another pair (and I’ll probably just keep making more pairs 😆). . For this particular pair of overalls, I wanted to make a fun color block design with some frayed edges. With the frayed edges, I didn’t want it to look sloppy or like someone’s experimental arts and crafts project so I knew I had to be very intentional with the fraying. One side of the straps, part of the pockets, the hem and the outseams are all frayed but the rest are sewn normally and carefully topstitched. Finally, I hand sewed a multicolor embroidery thread down the out seam to add an extra fun element and tie it all together. . It brought about an interesting discussion in our household cause a lot of sewists want to avoid making garments that look homemade, yet when you look at some high end clothing stores, you’ll see that prices go up when clothing looks like it’s been made by hand, including hand stitches, crochet details etc. Mind you, the expensive clothes that look handmade are done incredibly tastefully and I do definitely try to avoid making something that doesn’t look tasteful and intentional. Interesting conversation though! . Todays makes are a @wavesandwild longboard tee for Simon and a couple of @helens__closet #jacksontee for me. I’ve added KATM go go juice labels to the legion blue tops and a @joy.margot contains dog hair label to the pooch Jackson tee - couldn’t resist! I also lowered the neckline on this one but maybe not enough to be able to tell? It’s not quite #fashiononthesofafriday, but I’m feeling the need to make a statement today. This despite the fact that I’ll be singing to the choir of most who read this! . A little context: we are on the road to celebrate the holidays with family(hooray!). We stopped in Kentucky overnight, a state not generally known for its progressive views, though many residents do espouse them. How do I know? My husband and I lived in Kentucky and I taught at the university for awhile. And elected members of Congress who shall go unnamed. This morning, I ran into a coffee shop to get us some coffee for the road. A man was talking to the sales person and turned to look at me. He gives me the side eye, looks me up and down, and shakes his head. I say hello and he gives a half-snort, then turns back to the sales person. .
