This one was an absolute dream to sew: The fabric is a nice crisp cotton and the instructions by #helenscloset were the best. I am not sure about the resulting garment, though: I narrowed the shoulder, as I often do, but it is still a bit roomish between the bust and the shoulder. 👕 Shirt adventure: Style 2! 🦜 You may have noticed that I’m on a bit of an adventure with shirts at the moment! (Don’t worry, more leatherwork is coming up!) This one features cockatiels and monstera leaves- double win! I had cockatiels growing up, and they’ve never seemed to fly away from my imagination! ☺️ The reason for this is that I’ve long put off sewing shirts for myself and this has left me with a vast number of shirt patterns on my to do list- and for each single one, I want to draw out my size , make them, and see how they compare to each other. I need some help / advice / general words of wisdom on the @helens__closet Gilbert shirt, specifically view A (with the waist tie). My measurements conveniently put me in a size 24/26 for my bust, 28 for my waist, and 30 for my hips. Based on finished measurements I reckon I can get away with a straight 24 on bust and waist (a 26 would be fine on the waist but I suspect too big on the bust). I finally did it! My dream project of making a summer shirt from an old, embroidered table cloth came true 💞 As I can only imagine how many hours of work is behind this beautiful fabric, it was important to me to make something durable and classic that I can wear hopefully for the rest of my life. It took me years to find the right material and months to practice the pattern (hence the two other Gilbert tops on my feed lately). I carefully cut the pieces to best show off the embroidery and I kept the leftovers in case I’ll get a stain or hole that I need to cover later. I've had a flurry of new followers recently so I thought I'd show my face and say "hello" 👋 I'm Tanya, owner of Bornella Fabrics. I'm absolutely obsessed with sewing - if I'm not talking about it then I'm probably thinking about it! 2021: The year I started sewing again. I decided to make a recap in chronological order of everything I’ve sewn since January 2021. I had to take a 4 year break from sewing before then because of my illnesses and how it affected my abilities. I was so happy when I was able to sew again!! You can see at first I was practicing with objects instead of garments to coax my new sewing machine and its little quirks. In order: 1. A bow and a flashy fabric print. That's the magic combination for this #gilberttop from @helens__closet 🪄 Earlier this summer I bought this gorgeous orange-lilac viscose print designed by @yellowandjaune. Eventho orange is not even close in my colorrange, I just had to have it 🧡💜 For the pattern I wanted something that would let the fabric shine at his fullest but also that the pattern adds little details. Hello Insta peeps, I hope you've had some time to sew recently! This is my latest #minervabrandambassador post and I love wearing it! When this fabric arrived I was so surprised by how soft it is! It’s got a really lovely drape and feels really soft to touch. The print is also so vivid and rich, it is printed on one side, so the other side is white with a hint of the front colour showing through. I decided it would make the perfect Co-ord set, and stitched up a Helen’s Closet Gilbert Top and Winslow Culottes. Perfect for summer, but means I can also wear the top with jeans throughout the year and get more wear out of it. The print is such a fun summer design, and I love the colours. I had 4 metres of fabric, and used pretty much all of it. The tie version of the top takes quite a bit more fabric as the ties are part of the front pattern pieces, rather than a separate part attached later. I made a size 10 top in View A. And size 10 Culottes, with the elastic waistband hack. A completely seasonally inappropriate garment for you today. When I saw this print in @fabricgodmother I knew I needed it and it had to become a @helens__closet Gilbert top. So I immediately put it on my Christmas list😊 It is called Hula and is a viscose crepe, I just love the little palm trees, the Hawaiian ladies and the surfing man. I liked him so much, he had to feature on the pocket. And the colours, yellows and blues on the cream background, can I get away with wearing this now….in the wind and the rain 🤔perhaps it will encourage the sun to shine 🤞🏼 My @kylieandthemachine label fits perfectly with the vibe of this top. Can you tell I am a little bit in love with it 😂 I have now used 19.5 metres of my stash since January, with no new purchases, getting close to my goal of 30 metres.

Me Made May Day 22 I have the house to myself for most of the day, I am planning on cutting out a new make. It will be a blouse/top but haven’t quite decided which yet, but both fabrics are pre washed and ready to go. Wearing my @helens__closet Gilbert top, with the tie front. After being inspired by @purplesewingcloud Gilbert Dress hack I decided to have a go myself! This took forever! And I had to rework it quite a bit to make it fit but I love the end result 😀 Sams tutorial on the @helens__closet blog was easy to follow. I used a lightweight embroidered cotton that I have been hoarding for 6 years, bought at Britex fabrics in San Francisco so I didn’t want to waste it. The shirt came together lovely, I raised the bust darts 1 inch from my first version, however as this is a lightweight cotton and quite sheer so I had to underline all the pieces which made the skirt a bit too bulky for this style of dress. I took out 15cm from the back skirt and added darts in the shirt back, then added waist ties for a bit of definition. I was able to squeeze out two tops for work from this fabric I bought in Spain: A sleeveless #gilberttop and a #talismanpattern My bad jetlag (and also maybe lingering fatigue from Covid?) prevented me from sewing for a little over a week after getting home but I have loooots of sewing plans and a biiiiig fabric stash to go through as summer vacation winds down. The Gilbert Top size range is 0-30 (58” bust) and had a B cup and D cup pattern. Gilbert top #3 in this snake & flower print from @spoolandspindle that makes me feel very cool 😎. Finished using buttons from my Gramma’s stash and a label with my Grampa’s name that I came across while I was searching for the buttons. This week I’m really wishing I could show her all of the things I’ve been sewing and knitting.

I found out the hard way that if one of your pins snags a thread, the print will also pull, and leave a thin white line in the print! Sadly I had this happen on one of the ties on the front, but it’s so thin that hopefully it’s not too noticeable! The fabric presses really nicely with and without steam. I followed the pattern instructions for the top, except to do a 12mm seam on the hem of the sleeves instead of the 3.6cm’s as I like the sleeve longer. I also left the pockets off the culottes, as the fabric is so lovely and drapey, I felt that putting anything in pockets would distort the shape and pull the sides down. The culottes are a very speedy sew! Especially leaving the pockets off, and I simply stitched, then overlocked the seams. I used the elastic waistband hack for the culottes the same as my previous pair, as they are so comfortable to wear and lounge around in. I highly recommend this fabric, and have my eye on some of the other prints too! Pt2. This type of base fabric would make lovely pyjamas too as it’s so soft. I pre-washed the fabric and then tumble dried it to make sure any shrinkage would happen before I stitched it up. I decided to use black interfacing as most of the colours are dark on the print. As well as interfacing the collar piece and front facings, I added some Prym Edge Tape Interfacing to the hem of the top around the ties, to stop them from stretching out, and it made it easier to turn over the small seam allowance! The tape is soft enough to fold over easily and you could add some stitches to slightly gather the curved edges, or snip into the seam allowances. Helen’s Closet patterns have really fantastic instructions, and I always follow the stay stitching instructions. It’s projects like this that I love sewing, and will use little finished that no-one else will notice, but that I know are there. For example leaving thread tails on the bust darts to tie off, rather than back stitching them. Gilbert top I am excited about the prospect of spring and warmer weather coming in the southern hemisphere and have always admired the #gilberttop paired with this gorgeous cult poppy linen fabric I purchased it seemed like a match made in heaven. TL;DR - it is. This top/blouse/shirt It is light, and airy but still has enough structure to show off the details, and I can tell it’s going to be a staple over the warmer months. It looks great buttoned and unbuttoned and can totally be dressed up and down. Also I’m just head over heals in love with @helens__closet patterns. I have a real appreciation in the time put in to have such detailed and clear instructions. I find ever new pattern of hers I try, I come out with a new tip or trick I can use on other future makes.
